Class falls below the vaccination threshold By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

State data released on vaccination rates among kindergartners shows one local school falls below 95 percent, a threshold deemed crucial by public health officials, and a second school just above the mark.

Proponents of legislation to remove school nurses, town clerks and others from a list of authorized witnesses for religious exemptions to vaccines say the data demonstrates the need for the bill. According to the 2017-18 school year data released Friday, May 3 by

the Department of Public Health, only 93.4 percent of kindergartners at Hatton School were vaccinated for a range of viruses, including measles, polio, hepatitis A and B, and other communicable diseases. The 2017-18 data is the latest available.

Southington High School Principal Brian Stranieri will retire at the end of the school year, finishing a nearly four-decade-long local education career.

The vibe at the Fourth Annual Robert J. Beeney Memorial Car Show might have been retro — all vintage cars and 1950s doo-wop music — but its bigger goal was certainly set in the future.

He was hired to replace former Southington High School principal Kathleen McGrath in 2002. He was a technology education teacher before that and served as a coach.

The car show, named in honor of a Southington High School teacher who died of cancer, raises money for a scholarship fund for students who are going into technology based vocations. About 100 participants took

Town, former Curtiss Farm owners work on sewer line deal By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

said. “At the end of the day, everything will move along. It’s not an emergency.”

The town and the former owners of Curtiss Farm are working on an agreement that addresses concerns over a sewer line across the property.

Zoni feels work would take place with minimal intrusion because the sewer line will be entirely underground.

Tom Curtiss, who sold the land to the town in 2001 for open space, said the deed didn’t allow for construction on the parcel. Town officials disagreed, arguing that while there was a prohibition on The Curtiss Farm property located between Blatchley above-ground structures, the sewer line was underground Avenue and South End Road in Southington is seen here on Jan. 23. Town leaders are hoping to minimize the loss of and permissible.

David Zoni, chairman of the sewer committee, said the matter is in the hands of lawyers representing both sides. “We’re waiting for some adjustment to the language to the original deed,” he said. “We’ve got lawyers working on it with the previous owner to accommodate some of his concerns going forward.”

Children are required to have all vaccinations before enrolling in public school unless parents receive a religious or medical exemption. Some state lawmakers are looking to change the process for religious exemptions. Town clerks, school nurses, attorneys and justices of the peace are among those who can witness a religious exemption form. General Assembly Democrats introduced a bill this year that would allow people to decline to sign the exemption form. Rep. Liz Linehan, DCheshire, said the bill, HB 7005, was requested by school nurses.

Southington in the past five years with the exception of last year and the one confirmed case was an adult not a student,” Connellan said. The measles case was at Derynoski School.

Chlo-Anne Bobrowski, president of the Association of School Nurses of Connecticut, said school nurses were

added to the witness list several years ago by the General Assembly but that they’d rather be taken “out of the loop.” “We’re kind of the upholders of the state law for mandated immunization. (Exemptions) are kind of going against all of what we do,” she said. “We don’t want to be part of a group that’ll cosign with a parent.” Bobrowski said the increasing rates of non-vaccination have “consequences” such as measles outbreaks throughout the country. She also questioned the religious nature of the exemptions, saying the objection to vaccines was more philosophically based. “No one has ever seen a rabbi or a priest come forward and say, ‘It is against our religion,’” Bobrowski said. A host of parents attended a public hearing on the bill earlier this year, saying it violated parental and religious rights as well as the privacy of their families.

Board of Education Chairman Brian Goralski said the health of students is paramount, but that he didn’t like “gray areas” in the proposed law. “I do not want the responsibility put on our school nurses,” he said. “I want (the General Assembly) to make the rules, then we will follow them.” Linehan said the bill may be rendered moot by an elimination of the religious exemption altogether, a move she supports. Language for such a bill has not yet been drafted, but House Majority Leader Matt Ritter, D-Hartford, has said he wants a vote by 2020. “Now is the time to do this before we find a health emergency on our hands and we lose children,” Linehan said.

Police: Man left over 20 threatening voicemails SOUTHINGTON — A Meriden man faces charges after police said he left over 20 threatening voicemails for one person in a domestic incident last month. David Dionizio, 54, of Meriden, was charged May 8 with second-degree threatening, second-degree harassment, and second-degree breach of peace. On May 8, police responded

to the T/A Travel Center, 1875 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, for a report of a suspicious man loitering in the area, police spokesman Lt. Stephen Elliott said. Police identified the man as Dionizio and learned there was a warrant for the charges releated to the domestic incident, Elliott said. Dionizio is accused of leaving over 20 threatening voicemail messages for a

person on April 3. Dionizio also had an active warrant out of Meriden Superior Court for failure to appear in court. He was held on $100,000 bond and arraigned in Bristol Superior Court May 9. The judge lowered the bond to $25,000 and continued the case to June 4. — Lauren Sellew

Officials discuss new tobacco rules with local merchants By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

signs.

Police and town leaders have been visiting businesses to notify them of a new minimum age for tobacco purchases. Selling tobacco to those under 21 became illegal on April 4 following a change in town ordinances. Since then, the Southington Town-Wide Effort to Promote Success group and the police department held two information sessions to let owners know about the new rules and to provide them with age limit

Police Lt. Stephen Elliott said officers also visited businesses that weren’t able to attend. “The merchants were able to ask questions about the new ordinance,” he said. Gasman on Main Street was one of the businesses visited this week, according to a clerk. Police gave them a sign to replace the handwritten note that had been near the counter informing customers that they’d no longer sell tobacco products to those under 21.

The business opened in January and sells vaping, CBD and tobacco products. The council voted 8 to 1 in March to raise the minimum tobacco age to 21. STEPS pushed for the increase along with Tobacco 21, a national group. The town is among many in Connecticut that have passed a new age limit or are considering one.

“We’re hoping that the businesses view us as community partners in this,” said Kelly Leppard, STEPS youth prevention coordinator.

ed violations could result in the loss of a tobacco license, according to Town Attorney Carolyn Futtner.

“It’s 21, there’s no grandfathering,” she said.

Councilors debated how much of an effect the town law would have on preventing teens getting products that are still sold in nearby towns. Michael Riccio, a Republican councilor, was the lone vote in opposition.

Leppard said that since Smokers Dream World 2 is new, it didn’t make the initial list but would be visited soon. The ordinance levies fines for stores that sell tobacco to customers under 21. Repeat-

She will attend the University of Hartford in the fall, majoring in architectural engineering. Then on to a master’s degree. The final stop - working for Disney as an Imagineer.

Talk of technology education was lightly in the background of Saturday’s event, however. Rows of gleaming cars, hoods up and displaying perfect engines, were the draw.

“Every time we got money we’d do something to the car,” Kelly said.

PZC approves continued excavation, solar panels By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

The Planning and Zoning Commission gave approvals Tuesday night, May 7 for a solar field at Light Metals Coloring on Spring Street and continued excavation at a Tilcon property off Welch Road. Sev Bovino, a planner for

Kratzert, Jones & Associates, represented both applications, which were approved unanimously. Tilcon has applied for nine two-year extensions for work on Welch Road in past years. Bovino said truck activity will stay on its current schedule. Work doesn’t take place on the weekends.

“The truck routes are the same as always,” Bovino said. Commission vice chairman Paul Chaplinsky asked about the “status of activity” on the site. Work shuts down in the winter and resumes in the warmer months, Bovino said. In addition to fill taken

from the Welch Road property, he said Tilcon also takes fill from a large dirt pile at nearby Lake Compounce.

in a half-acre grass area at the Light Metals Coloring site, according to Bovino. The area is in a floodplain and the project required and received approval from the town’s Conservation Commission.

That earth is moved to the Welch Road property and then moved to customers.

Light Metals Coloring is surrounded by industrial buildings.

The commission gave approval for another two years of excavation. Solar panels will be installed

Bread for Life thrives with help from its friends By Missy Cipriano

Southington Bread for Life, a non-profit organization, is sustained by all of the willing volunteers who serve in various areas. Churches in town not only serve those who come in for lunch Monday through Friday, they sit, enjoy lunches and provide fellowship to our clients. In addition they assist with setup, clean up, food prep and brown bag dinner prep. Hot meals and bag dinners are delivered each day to our home bound clients. On many occasions, these awesome volunteers are the only people our homebound clients see and can speak with. Our drivers also pick up food donated by local businesses and return it to Bread for Life. The Common Garden is

The Summer Lunch Program brings together Bread for Life and the community. Healthy lunches (which include fresh fruit daily that is donated by a Mom’s Group) are brought to the playgrounds of several apartment complexes. After lunch the volunteers do a craft project, read and play games with the children. Once a week a special guest will drop in to share their talents, for example the police department brought the Dare SUV, the kids were able to sit

SIBLINGS EDITION

Sponsored by:

ABBY & HALEY LESPIER The Lespier twins made their presence known last year as freshmen, ascending to No. 1 doubles on the Maloney card and advancing to the State Open. Abby and Haley are right back at it this spring as sophomores. Going into Tuesday’s match at Middletown, the Lespiers had a record of 12-2 overall and were a spotless 4-0 in CCC South matches. They’ve qualified for a return to the postseason tournaments and have the Lady Spartans flying high at 10-4 riding a four-match win streak.

BRIANNA & DANIELLE FLOYD CHESHIRE SOFTBALL

Brianna Floyd is in the midst of her fourth season of varsity softball with the Rams. When the third baseman graduates this spring, however, the Cheshire cupboard will not be without a Floyd. Bri’s younger sister Danielle is already aboard as a sophomore outfielder. Against Southington on April 30, the Floyds were a familial wrecking ball. With Cheshire trailing 3-1 in the last of the seventh, Danielle tied the game with a two-run single and was ultimately driven in by Bri with the game-winning run.

MELISSA & ROSALINDA HERNANDEZ WILCOX TECH TENNIS

The Hernandez sisters starting playing tennis only last year. Melissa, the elder, saw some time at singles. This year, as a senior, Melissa is in her element playing doubles with Rosalinda, a sophomore. Let’s just say they’re on the wavelength, even when it gets bumpy. “If I were to play with someone else, I wouldn’t be able to get mad at them,” said Melissa. “I can get mad at my sister. I’ll tell she’s doing bad and she’ll get mad and do better.” Melissa and Rosalinda are Wilcox Tech’s No. 1 pairing.

When it was first brought to our attention that the Horobin brothers were triplets, we said “God bless you” to their mother. “He already has,” she replied. Andrew, Luke and Zach Horobin have been a staple of Lyman Hall’s long-distance running corps in their four years with the Trojans, from cross country through indoor and outdoor track. In the last week’s rivalry meet with Sheehan, the triplets teamed with fellow senior Eric Lipka — a triplet himself — and won the 4x800 relay in 9:22.17.

GARRETT, MACKENZIE & CAMDEN BROWN SOUTHINGTON LACROSSE

Candidates in the R-J Athletes of the Week “Siblings Edition” come in multiple combinations -- brothers as teammates, sisters as teammates, twins and, in the case of the Browns, triplets. Garrett and Mackenzie Brown, though, occupy a unique niche. They play the same position: goaltender. Garrett, Camden and the SHS boys are 8-5. Mackenzie and the Lady Knights are 7-6.

ELI & IAN BATTIPAGLIA

CHESHIRE BASEBALL Two of the cornerstone players on Cheshire’s 2018 Class LL state championship baseball team, twin brothers Eli and Ian Battipaglia, are back in right field and third base, respectively, this spring for the Rams, who are positioning themselves for a title defense. They were 16-1 and riding a 16-game winning streak heading into the final week of the regular season. Eli was batting .340; Ian was at .368 with 19 runs batted in. The Battipaglias will be playing together again next year at Franklin Pierce.

something (to which) I can really add.” Ferry said Hewitt can take a traditionally successful program and grow it even more. “Our numbers have dwindled the last couple of years and having Howie will build more excitement in the program,” Ferry said. “We had some great candidates, but Howie rose to the forefront and we are pumped to have him as our next girls varsity basketball coach. “We were all kind of like, ‘Wow’ we put in: ‘He really wants this,’ ” Ferry added. “Meeting with him and

said of meeting with his players. “The interaction I felt was great. You just want kids to compete and this is a great opportunity for me and for them, I hope.” Despite stepping down from Maloney, Hewitt said he’s thankful for all of the experiences he had at the school he graduated from in 1970. In addition to 43 years coaching basketball at Maloney — the first 10 were as an assistant coach — Hewitt coached baseball for 23 years. He also had stints as a golf and cross country coach and was the school’s assistant athletic director and athletic director at various times. “I’m thankful for all of the support I’ve ever had,” Hewitt said. “We’ve had people that have followed us around for a long time and were supportive of me.
