Extra-inning defeat hands Post 72 quick playoff exit By John Pettit Special to The Citizen
Southington American Legion Post 72 starter Alex Roger was terrific Tuesday. The right-hander pitched all nine innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits. The only problem was that Danbury’s D.J. Miller was even better. Miller scattered two hits with eight strikeouts, two walks and a hit batter to outduel Roger and lead Post 60 to a 2-1 victory over Southington in the first round of the American Legion State Play-in Tournament at Fontana Field. “What a game!” Southington coach Jim Gugliotti said. “I would have paid to watch this game. It was two great pitchers. I figured Danbury would be tough and they

were.” Southington, of Zone I, and Danbury, of Zone V, both entered the play-in tourney at 15-12 overall. Post 72 was making its first postseason appearance in three years after qualifying with a win over Wolcott in the final game of the regular year. “I’m proud of them,” Gugliotti said. “I had fun coming to the ballpark. We battled, we played hard and we had fun.” It was the first loss of the summer for Roger (3-1). Danbury started the game with singles by Brian Deldebbie, Janco Cornelius (2-for-4) and Miller before scoring an unearned run on a throwing error. Both pitchers went on cruise control until the bottom of the eighth inning.
