South Florida families have been impacted in ways none of us could ever have imagined. From losing our loved ones to losing our jobs, the pain is palpable. And for those of us fortunate enough to be able to work from home, we are faced with another type of loss — losing our work-life balance. Trying to juggle the kids with work — be it a paying job or the responsibility of running the household — has taken its toll on us. Not only are we more stressed than ever, now many of us carry the added burden of guilt for some of the not-so-nice thoughts running through our heads. This devastating pandemic has tested our patience in every aspect of our lives. But we can, and should, take comfort in

Creative connections FLAMINGO GARDENS EXHIBIT INSPIRES ART AND IMAGINATION

A

n award-winning exhibit at Flamingo Gardens highlights the beauty of nature by combining a half-million LEGOs with a countless amount of creativity. Stroll the pathways of Flamingo Gardens to see a peacock displaying its plumage, a giant corn spider dangling from a tree and a colorful monarch butterfly situated on a milkweed plant. Yes, it’s very likely you will see peacocks and butterflies of the real sort too, but this summer is the time to see the handcrafted kind. The Nature Connects: Art with LEGO Bricks exhibit by Sean Kenney, features 13 imaginative sculptures nestled along the pathways throughout the arboretum. Kenney carefully crafted the whimsical display over the course of many years. The playful pieces are designed not only to bring joy to viewers, but also to touch upon topics like the balance of ecosystems, natural harmony and our relationship with nature. The exhibit is on display at Flamingo Gardens through Sept. 13 and is included with general admission. The event also includes a make-yourown creation station inside the Gallery, and a viewing of additional LEGO brick sculptures of Flamingo Gardens’ flora and fauna created by local artists. Flamingo Gardens is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and is located at 3750 S. Flamingo Rd. in Davie. For more information, call 954-473-2955 or visit www.flamingogardens.org.

FLORIDA’S LIBRARY OF THE YEAR Goodbye card catalogs and microfiche…hello digital downloads and virtual reality. Libraries have evolved, and the Broward County Library system is proof that it’s a new chapter for libraries. The Florida Library Association recently named Broward County Library as the state’s 2020 Library of the Year for its initiatives that expanded library services to new residents of Broward County, explored current social issues, and provided the community with free access to current technology and equipment. With 38 branches throughout the county, Broward County Library is a go-to not only for reading material, but for free classes, workshops,

8

learning tools and entertainment for all ages. More than 10 million visitors typically step foot in these branches every year. And as a testament to its resiliency, when library doors closed due to the pandemic this year, the system ramped up virtual efforts, delivering services including kids clubs, story times, reading programs, college readiness workshops and entertainment directly to cardholders’ computers. A sampling of upcoming virtual events include: an Anime Club for Teens & Tweens at 2 p.m. July 21, Online Bookopoly for kids ages 6-11 at 2 p.m. on July 22, and a chance to meet an engineer from NASA’s Artemis Program at 11 a.m. on July 30. For a complete list of upcoming events, or to sign up for a library card, visit www.broward.org/library.

Animal Aid PANDEMIC BRINGS NEW MEANING TO TEEN’S PET PROJECT

H

umans aren’t the only ones affected by the coronavirus shutdown. Their pets are also feeling the pinch as out-of-work people struggle to keep their families and fur-babies fed. Miami teenager Ally Gold is stepping up to fill that need with her nonprofit organization, Ally’s Animal Project. Ally, an incoming junior at Riviera Preparatory School in Miami, started volunteering with animals in 2017 by fostering her first dog, Bruno, through leg surgery, recovery and adoption. She continued fostering, earning over 1,000 volunteer hours with Miami-Dade Animal Services. In 2019, Ally started her Animal Project after seeing people donating pet carriers and other items to the shelter after their pets died. “I started making bracelets, called ‘Forever In Your Heart,’ to give to people who lost their animals,” she said. “But then people started asking how much they were. That gave me the idea to sell them. Then I started making custom bracelets.” Ally’s mother, Lisa Levenson, said the bracelets were a big hit at Ally’s school and in the community, and Ally saved 100 percent of the proceeds while looking for a worthy cause. “She said, ‘I want to do a really big project that will be around long after I’m out of high school.’ ” Levenson said Ally was looking at funding a dog park or an agility course. Then coronavirus happened, and people began surrendering their animals because they couldn’t afford to care for them. “When COVID-19 started affecting lots of people, and they were unable to feed their pets, I thought that was a good time to use the money to send food to people,” Ally said.

Her website, www.allysanimalproject.org, added a page asking people to contact Ally if they needed help because of COVID-19, and it got an immediate response. “She has sent food to over 100 families,” Levenson said. And it isn’t a small bag, “she sends a six-month supply.” Others have joined the effort. “Purina Dog Food found out about what she was doing, as well as Chewy, and they both contributed to her project,” donating food and food vouchers, Levenson said. They’ve also both ordered custom bracelets from Ally with their company logos and colors. Ally hopes to continue helping pets and pet owners for years to come. You can support Ally’s Animal Project through bracelet sales on the website, and on Facebook @AllysAnimalProject and Instagram @allys_animal_project.

THE POWER OF SCIENCE A new permanent exhibit at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in downtown Miami invites guests to step into the shoes of researchers, explorers and inventors through a series of hands-on, interactive elements. The Power of Science exhibit, in the museum’s Ocean Gallery on Level 1, explores how science pushes the boundaries of possibility in four areas: Our Oceans, Our Environment, Our Bodies and Our Universe. Using cutting-edge interactive activities, rare specimens, a deep dive into the periodic table of elements, and a showcase of scientific instruments to show how science solves problems, the exhibit encourages visitors to experience the scientific process by asking questions, gaining insight and overcoming challenges. The oceans section highlights the new technology that empowers scientists to dive deeper than ever before, as well as our oceans’ health and global interconnection. The inner workings of our bodies and the dynamic nature of outer space, including the potential of life on other planets, are also explored in the exhibit. The Power of Science is included with regular Frost Science admission. For more information, visit www.frostscience.org.

SOUTH FLORIDA

FAMILY

FAVORITES s d r a w A South Florida can be a paradise

for those of us lucky enough to live here. Family fun is everywhere, from sunny, sandy beaches to the lush lands of the

Everglades, with plenty of activities in between. How can families find the best pizza, pediatrician or indoor playground with so many options? Let our annual Family Favorites Awards be your guide. Here you’ll find the people, places and things parents nominated and voted as their number one.

Family Fun

Family Favorites

FAVORITE BEACH BROWARD:

Hollywood Beach

Whether you are sightseeing or sunbathing, there is plenty to see and do along the 2 ½-mile stretch of sandy shoreline at Hollywood Beach. Popular with tourists and locals alike, this is a quaint coastal stop to grab a slice of beach pizza and settle into the sand for a sun-filled day by the surf. The clean coastline and warm waters are just one of the locale’s draws. If the kids grow tired of swimming and sand castles – not that they would – there is a splash pad steps from the ocean at Charnow Park, and FlowRider, an outdoor surfing simulator, at Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort. And during scheduled times throughout the year, you can shuffle your sandy feet over to the outdoor Hollywood Beach Theatre to sing along and dance to live music.

MIAMI-DADE:

Miami Beach

Miami Beach, known for its lively nightlife and lavish style, also has many family-friendly features that do not go unnoticed. The area is famous for its art deco architecture, with more than 800 architecturally protected buildings, swanky style and pristine beaches. You can find sprawling paths to rollerblade or bicycle on, and at Lummus Park, a beachfront location along Ocean Drive, there are volleyball sand courts and two sets of playgrounds for the kids. Bike rental stations along a paved beach path allow users to rent in one spot and return at any rack along the way. If you venture off the white sandy shoreline, nearby entertainment includes a number of kid-friendly museums, restaurants, ice cream shops and more.

FAVORITE PLACE TO SPLASH OR SWIM BROWARD:

Rapids Water Park

With 35 water rides throughout 30 acres of space, Rapids Water Park, South Florida’s largest, is well worth the short trek north. From splash pads and kid slides to daring drops and high speed rides, there is something here for everyone. For thrill seekers there are experiences like Big Thunder, a raft ride that sends riders down sharp turns and through a dark tunnel before they descend down a 45-degree drop leading into an immense funnel; and Brain Drain, a heart-pounding vertical plunge featuring two 70-foot-tall enclosed flume waterslides. And for the leisurely lot, there are tamer rides like Big Surf, a 25,000-square-foot wave pool, and Lazy River, a quarter-mile tube ride that slowly wends its way through water cannons, aquatics mists and a cascading waterfall. 6566 N. Military Trail, Riviera Beach, 561-848-6272 www.rapidswaterpark.com

MIAMI-DADE:

Venetian Pool

People travel from around the world to dip their toes into the waters of this unique gem in Coral Gables. Fortunately for us, it is in our backyard. Created in 1923 from a coral rock quarry, the aesthetic 820,000-gallon spring water-fed pool is filled from an underground aquifer. During the spring and summer seasons, the pool is filled and drained daily, with naturally filtered water. Adding to its beauty, the pool also features two historic lookout towers with a city view, waterfalls and a cave-like grotto. Children must be a minimum of 3 years old and 38 inches tall to enter. 2701 de Soto Blvd., Coral Gables, 305-460-5306 www.coralgables.com

Kids are curious, and this museum satisfies their inherent desire to learn through fun, hands-on activities, exhibits and experiments. Inside you’ll find two floors of museum to explore, with stops that include a hangar makerspace, dinosaur bone yard and storm center. And the amusement expands beyond the museums walls. Outside there is a Science Park with a tennis ball launcher, pulleys, levers, a self-propelled cooling fan and other play stations that focus on physical science activities. MODS is also home to an IMAX theater and hosts many events throughout the year, including sleep-overs, otter encounters and moonlight turtle walks. 401 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale, 954-467-MODS www.mods.org

The 250,00-square-foot waterfront Museum Park features a three-level aquarium that allows guests a glimpse inside the waters of South Florida; the Frost Planetarium, a cutting-edge planetarium that gives viewers almost a 360-degree view of shows, programs and laser lights; and gallery activities including a Mirror Maze, and MeLab, where you can explore the ways your mind and body work together. 1101 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, 305-434-9600 www.frostscience.org

FAVORITE SOUTH FLORIDA ATTRACTION BROWARD:

Lion Country Safari

Situated on nearly 600 acres of natural area and home to over 1,000 animals, this 4-mile drive-thru safari is home to roaming lions, zebras, chimpanzees, giraffes and more. Prepare for fingerprints on your car windows as the kids get “in touch” with all that wanders the preserve. Some animals will come close to investigate as you coast by in your car, while others like the lions can be viewed from a safe distance. Under typical circumstances, the experience also includes Safari World, a walk-through safari with more furry friends, entertainment, a splash park, petting zoo, boat rides and a merry-go-round. There is also a KOA campground on-site with over 200 campsites for those looking for a full-fledged expedition. 2003 Lion Country Safari Rd., Loxahatchee, 561-793-1084 www.lioncountrysafari.com

MIAMI-DADE:

Zoo Miami

Not only is Zoo Miami the largest zoo in Florida, and fifth largest in the world, but it is also the only sub-tropical zoo in the continental United States. This allows us to visit and view a broad species of animals that come from Asia, Australia, Africa and the Americas in lush, open-air exhibits that replicate their natural homes. Some of what you will see includes the African Lion, giant anteater, meerkat, warthog and serval. Through October 4th, visitors can also see some prehistoric creatures of the animated type. The Dinosaurs Live! exhibit, featuring more than 20 lifesized animatronic dinosaurs throughout the park, adds an outdoor Jurassic adventure to the experience. 12400 SW 152 St., Miami, 305-251-0400

WORDS of wisdom

Parallel Personalities THE TERRIBLE TWOS VS. THE TERRIBLE TEENS BY PAM MOLNAR

W

hile I was picking up my prescription at the pharmacy last week, the woman in front of me had two small children. I guessed their ages to be 2 and 4. It was around dinnertime, and everyone was in meltdown mode, including their mom. She apologized several times to the cashier and to me for the scene we were witnessing, but I just waved her off. I told her I have been in her shoes plenty of times and I completely understood. When she left, the cashier said to me, “I’m glad mine are in high school now. That is such a tough age to parent.” I nodded in agreement but carried those words in my head into the parking lot and on the way home. Was parenting a teen any easier than a 2-year-old? Actually, there are a lot of similarities. THEY HAVE OUTBURSTS IN PUBLIC. Yes, they still happen. Of course, they are not exactly the same, but they are still embarrassing. Recently, I brought my daughter with me to the store to pick up some things for dinner. “Why do we need that? I can just have cereal.” I told her we were not eating cereal for dinner. Moments later, I stopped at the end of the aisle where they had a display of cereal on sale. As I put some in the cart, my daughter mocked loudly, “I thought we weren’t eating cereal,” just as another woman was passing us. Thankfully she gave me a sympathetic smile and kept moving. THEY ARE BOTH PICKY EATERS. When my kids were younger, I told them they had to eat a number of bites of something equal to their age before I would excuse them from eating it. Now, as teenagers, their busy schedule keeps them from the family dinner table. Every morning, I ask if they will be home for dinner. “Maybe. What are we having?” If they don’t like what is on the menu, their practice, job or study group coincidently overlaps with our dinner.

YOU STILL DON’T GET A FULL NIGHT’S SLEEP. With 2-year-olds, you have fights about bed times, they have bed-wetting accidents and bad dreams and like to get up early. With teenagers, you have fights about curfews, you worry what they are doing while they are out, you doze restlessly on the couch until they get home, and then you hear them gaming or Facetiming long after you have gone to bed. YOU WORRY WHEN THEY ARE QUIET. Two-year-olds are loud by nature. They haven’t mastered their inside voices, they play-act without fear of being made fun of, and their toys are unnecessarily noisy. When they are quiet, they are probably up to no good. Teenagers are very similar. They come through the family living spaces like tornados — talking, playing music and with phone alerts going off constantly. They share stories about their day as they fill up on afterschool snacks and head upstairs to unwind. It’s when they enter the house quietly and go straight to their room without a word that you worry about what is going on in their world. YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO PICK UP AFTER THEM. It’s understandable when your 2-year-old misses the garbage, cleans up spills haphazardly and leaves her towels on the bathroom floor and her handprints all over the place. Sadly, even after 15 years of reminding, you will still find her doing these things. The only difference is that the handprints are bigger. But, at the end of the day, both a 2-year-old and a teenager appreciate everything their parents do for them — even if they don’t know how to tell you.
