Moments that Count

Parker was born with a genetic disorder so rare she’s the first documented case. Her family turned to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Center for Complex Care, where our collaboration with Boston Children’s Hospital means Parker benefits from the expertise of both teams.

From breathing problems in the first moments of life to surgeries for fused bones in her skull, Parker’s complex care team is helping her beat the odds.

“The moment we arrived in the NICU at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, we knew we were in the right place,” said Parker’s mom, Kelsey.

When your child is facing rare or complex medical problems, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is there in the moments that count most.

Lifesaving Lessons

PROTECTING KIDS IN AND AROUND WATER

With pools, canals and beaches just about everywhere you turn in South Florida, summertime serves as an important reminder to instill water safety skills in children now, and throughout the year. According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 to 4 years old and the second leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 5 to 14. Whether it’s by attending an interactive event or enrolling in swimming lessons, there are many ways to help safeguard your family. Below are some suggestions.

DRY LAND WATER SAFETY DAY -- From 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 29, the City of Coconut Creek will hold a free event for all ages at the Coconut Creek Recreation Complex at 4455 Sol Press Blvd. Hosted by the local police and fire rescue departments, on-land activities include water and beach safety presentations, equipment and vehicle displays, CPR and AED information and family-friendly activities. The Coco Island Splash Pad will also be open for little ones to keep cool.

WATER SAFETY TRAINING – In Miami Springs on Saturday, May 20, families can attend a free, interactive water safety event that begins with a discussion and safety tips, followed by water activities for kids to try in the pool. The event takes place from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Miami Springs Aquatic Center at 1401 Westward Dr. For information, see www.miamisprings-fl.gov.

SWIM CENTRAL – Working with a variety of cities and non-profit organizations throughout Broward County, this organization serves as a resource and referral service for water safety instruction and programs. Additionally, the Children’s Services Council of Broward County has partnered with Swim Central to provide swim coupons to Broward County residents to offset the cost of swimming instruction for children 8 months to 6 years old at a variety of pool locations throughout Broward. To learn more, visit www.watersmartbroward.org.

BE WATER SMART – Palm Beach County offers an illustrated ABCDs of Water Safety guide with tips that include, always having an adult water watcher during gatherings, how to escape rip currents at the beach, proper use of life jackets, tub and bathroom safety and more. To view a copy, visit www.pbcgov.com/dpc.

RESOURCES TO KEEP THEM SAFE – The American Red Cross offers online lessons, resources and tips for families to peruse together at www.redcross.org. Age-appropriate videos or “whale tales” presented by Longfellow the Whale, provide short, engaging lessons that focus on memorable rhyming phrases to help kids retain what they’ve learned. Episodes are separated into age categories that are geared toward children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Activity sheets and quick quizzes allow kids to demonstrate what they’ve learned.

Simple Ways to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle on Earth Day

Little Ones

1. Teach your kids to turn off the water when brushing their teeth.

2. Recycle! Have youngsters place items such as paper and tin cans into dedicated recycling bins rather than the trash.

3. Transform trash into treasure. Preschoolers can create beautiful works of art by reusing and repurposing bottles, yogurt cups, leftover fabric scraps and the like.

4. Demonstrate to little ones how to cool your house on hot days by pulling the drapes closed instead of dialing down the air conditioning.

5. Likewise, bundle up on cooler winter days rather than turning on the heat.

6. Encourage children to turn the lights off when leaving a room.

7. Have your kids play with eco-friendly toys and games, like wooden puzzles dyed with non-toxic stains or balls that are BPA- and phthalate-free.

8. Make bird feeders out of natural ingredients like peanut butter and birdseed.

9. Engage them in planting a garden and growing vegetables that your family can eat.

10. Get a houseplant or two and talk about how plants improve the air we breathe.

Kids can throw in eggshells, coffee grounds, and most food scraps and wait for them to turn into rich soil for use with plants outside and in.

15. Encourage them to sign up to pick up trash from community spaces like playgrounds, parks or beaches.

16. Teach them to turn off the lights when they leave the room (again).

17. Let the kids make signs in every room of the house that reminds family members to turn off the lights.

18. Use reusable water bottles rather than single-use plastic bottles.

19. Plant a tree at school or home.

20. Plant native milkweed to help the monarch butterfly population.

Tweens & Teens

21. Older kids will enjoy visiting thrift shops to nab pre-owned pieces that otherwise may have ended up in the landfill.

22. Encourage them to use reusable bags when shopping.

23. Have them unplug their electronics and chargers when not in use.

24. They can also turn off their desktop or gaming monitors when they aren’t using them.

25. Ask them to devise ways your house can collect rainwater for use on houseplants or flowers.

School-age Kids

11. Elementary school kids can help with shopping for recyclable products. Have them look for labels that say recycled content, pre-consumer and post-consumer.

12. Children can place small recycling bins in each bathroom in the house. Bonus points if you can get them to empty them each week into the curbside recycling bin!

13. Show them how to use reusable rags instead of paper towels to clean up messes.

14. Create a compost pile on your patio or in your backyard.

26. Turn off the lights when leaving the room. (Yes, you’ll probably still be working on this one with teens even though you’ve been preaching it since they were little!)

27. Recycle old cell phones. Make sure to take out SIM cards and erase the phones first, usually with a factory reset. Teens may also need to remove the battery and research how and where the battery can be recycled properly.

28. Use a timer to conserve water when taking a shower.

29. Remove makeup with a cleanser and a reusable wipe instead of disposable wipes.

30. Host or volunteer at an e-waste collection event.

THE FAIR HOUSING ACT OPENS DOORS FOR FAMILIES.

A landlord tried to tell us that he didn’t have an apartment suitable for our children. But that’s against the law. If you believe you’ve experienced housing discrimination, the law protects you. Precious Cargo

A LETTER TO MY TEENAGER’S CAR

Dear Car, Let me be the first to say, “Welcome to the family!” We are very pleased that you have joined us. You are very much loved and wanted and we looked long and hard for you.

You were the right combination of price (cheap), condition (as good as possible) and safety (not exactly Fort Knox on wheels, but we tried).

Car, I hope you have thick skin, I mean, paint. That’s because you will hear some adults whispering about how they never had a car when they were young and how you are an extravagant purchase. You might hear some people pass judgment on our family because you are in our lives now. Don’t listen to them. They don’t know how much you are needed. Nor do they know just how old and tired you are or how many miles you have seen.

You know, I am old and tired, too. I’ve also seen a lot of miles. However, I think we both still have a lot of life left in us!

Car, I’m reaching out to you because you have a very important role in our family.

You see, you will transport my teen driver in the coming years. I hope that you will function as promised, and when you can’t, that you’ll let me know promptly. In return, I promise I’ll fix you to the best of my ability and my wallet’s ability.

Car, there will be times my teenager will be less than careful with you. I apologize in advance. His father and I have told him over and over and over again how he is supposed to drive. He has passed two segments of driver’s education demonstrating how he is supposed to drive. He has logged 50 hours of supervised time behind the wheel driving how he is supposed to drive.

But, I know how I am supposed to eat and that doesn’t stop me from indulging every now and then (curse you, Olive Garden breadsticks!). So, when my teenager indulges in a stop too suddenly or he turns you too sharply, even though he knows he shouldn’t, please take care of him.

Car, not only do you have the responsibility of keeping my teen safe and getting him to and fro, but you will also provide much-needed transportation for my younger child.

That’s right, you will carry two of my babies as they go to school or practice.

I beg of you, keep my babies safe.

You will also meet some of my teen’s friends and I hope that you get them safely where they need to go. And yes, there may be some things spilled, said or done by my teenager and his friends that both of us don’t want spilled, said or done.

Hang in there. I’m saying that for me as much as for you.

I also want to apologize for the stinky sports equipment that is about to make its second home in your trunk. I know it doesn’t smell pretty. If it’s any consolation, I’ve been toting it in my trunk to various practices and games for a long time. You’ll be okay. Stinky, but okay.

I’ll look out for you, Car. I’ll watch for scrapes and dents if my teen or the school parking lot treats you too rough. I’ll make sure he washes you and gets your oil changed. I know you’ll need new tires sooner rather than later (can we try for later?). Rest assured that I know how important your job is in the family and he and I will do our share to help you carry it out.

Thank you for waiting for our family. It seemed like we would never find you, but then we did. I’m hoping this is the start of a long and beautiful relationship.

Love, Mom
