THE LEGACY OF A LEGEND D. WAYNE LUKAS

SEPTEMBER 2, 1935 – JUNE 28, 2025

When Darrell Wayne Lukas, better known as D. Wayne Lukas, passed away at his Louisville home on June 28, 2025, the world of Thoroughbred racing lost one of its most vibrant icons of the sport. At 89, Lukas embodied the words he lived by: “You have to have a passion.” His departure leaves behind an indelible legacy—of prestige, innovation, mentorship, and, yes, dazzling green stalls and sharp suits.

A TRAILBLAZING ICON IN A SUIT AND SHADES

Anyone who witnessed Lukas at the racetrack or walking the backside knew: this was no ordinary trainer. D. Wayne was a fashion icon on the track— immaculate tailored suits, polished shoes, his signature mirrored aviator sunglasses, and a crisp Stetson perched on his head. His barns, draped in vibrant Lukas green, were as iconic as his wardrobe, instantly recognizable

at Churchill Downs or Belmont— heralding the presence of a champion-led operation.

That green also symbolized method. Lukas pioneered a franchise-style structure—a national operation spanning coast to coast, keeping immaculate standards in every barn and on every racetrack . Owners knew what they were getting when they signed on: world-class training, meticulous care, and a blueprint for success.

Before guiding Secretariatworthy stablemates, Lukas was a high school basketball coach in Wisconsin, instilling discipline and ambition in teenage athletes. That coaching ethos became his hallmark in horse racing— reading the horse, understanding their psyche, and building disciplined and confident athletes. He began working with quarter horses in 1968, before transitioning to Thoroughbreds in 1977–80, and had his remarkable breakout win in the 1980 Preakness Stakes with the Codex.

From there, it was full throttle. Lukas would go on to dominate marquee events—four Kentucky Derbies, seven Preakness Stakes, four Belmont Stakes, and a record-tying 20 Breeders’ Cup wins. Known as “D. Wayne off the plane,” he was a fixture at tracks nationwide, winning no matter where he went.

Master of the Big Stage Lukas epitomized excellence when stakes were highest. His first Derby triumph was in 1988 with Winning Colors, followed by Thunder Gulch (1995), Grindstone (1996), and Charismatic (1999). And Thunder Gulch went on to win the Belmont and the Travers— propelling Lukas into the pantheon of Triple Crown lore.

Yet, his mastery wasn’t confined to one race; his success spanned all major Triple Crown events and swept Breeders’ Cup cards.

INNOVATOR, GAME-CHANGER, MENTOR

Lukas didn’t just win races—he reshaped the industry. He put bloodlines front and center, revolutionized coast to coast

campaigns, and built a training empire that would become a blueprint for future trainers. He earned four Eclipse Awards, became the first trainer to exceed $100 million in career winnings, and claimed the title of money winning leader 14 times over his career.

Even more enduring than his trophy haul is the “Lukas tree”—a legion of protégés, including Todd Pletcher, Mike Maker, Kiaran McLaughlin, and Mark Hennig, who now lead top barns of their own. He shared insights, fostered

talent, and inspired the next generation through his tenacity and candor.

A LIFE WITH HIGHS AND HEARTBREAKS

Behind the glamour were profound trials. In 1993, his son Jeff, Lukas’s cherished assistant, suffered a catastrophic brain injury in a barn accident that robbed him of normal life. Jeff survived in a fragile state until 2016—a loss Lukas always carried.

Late in life, health issues emerged. In June 2025, he contracted a severe MRSA blood infection and, choosing to spend his final days at his Louisville home in hospice, passed peacefully on June 28. His final victory came just two weeks earlier—with Tour Player at Churchill Downs on June 12, 2025—a testament to the enduring fire and commitment that defined him.

As Churchill Downs CEO Bill Carstanjen reflected, “We will miss his humor, his wisdom and his unmatched capacity to thrill the fans with the performances of his horses on our sport’s biggest days”

THE FINAL RIDE

Thoroughbred racing. His life’s arc—from basketball coach to barn legend—embodies grit, intellect, and unrelenting drive. Today, amidst the pomp of greenstall barns and echoes of cheering fans, we remember him as the coach who changed the game.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

From his crisp, green-adorned barns and saddlecloths to the polished image he maintained in public, D. Wayne Lukas represented the pinnacle of Thoroughbred training. His influence transformed how horses are campaigned, how stables operate, and how champions are raised.

He will be missed—by owners, jockeys, hoof-clapping fans, and

the many trainers who grew under his steady hand. But his blueprint remains writ large—on racetrack uniforms, in training regimens, and in the hearts of those he mentored. As the sport moves forward, the echoes of “Coach” Lukas will guide each stride toward greatness. Rest easy, Coach. You read every horse perfectly—and we understood your message loud and clear: build with passion.

OUT WITH THE OLD, TRIPLE CROWN RACETRACK RENOVATIONS

There is an age-old adage that goes, “The only constant is change.” Well friends, whether we like it or not, this archaic saying rings true even inside the staunchly traditional realm of thoroughbred horse racing. In fact, I can even emphatically attest that the “Sport of Kings” has a far different complexion compared to when I placed my first wager three decades ago. Moreover, there is a modern movement to renovate and even, in some cases, completely redesign the three storied cathedrals which host thoroughbred horse racing’s Triple Crown Series (i.e., Churchill Downs, Pimlico Race Course and Belmont Park).

The older I get, the more enamored I become with the Belmont Stakes. Truth be told, this makes little

sense and frankly, I have every reason to abhor the Triple Crown’s third jewel. See, my win-loss (betting) record concerning the “Test of a Champion” is downright abysmal, however when it comes to the Big Apple’s biggest race, I suppose I’m just a glutton for punishment. That said, perhaps the comprehensive “face lift” that I am about to chronicle will impart a small grain of good luck come 2026.

Before we delve into the epic transfiguration that is taking place against the backdrop of Elmont, NY (the home of Belmont Park), let’s take a brief look back at the illustrious history of one of thoroughbred horse racing’s most revered ovals. Originally opened on

May 4th, 1905, Belmont Park was the brainchild of August Belmont Jr. who built his hippodrome in honor of his late father, August Belmont Sr. (not only a figure who helped save thoroughbred horse racing in New York in the late 1800’s, but also the individual whom the Belmont Stakes is named after).

At the dawn of the 1960’s, Belmont Park started to show signs of acute wear and tear. Many necessary components and a vast number of amenities were literally disintegrating and, in the spring of 1963, two different engineering audits reported that the grandstand was unfit for habitation due to age induced skeletal failings. This was true to the extent that even some of the support beams within the main

grandstand were twisting in the shape of the letter “S”.

Subsequent to a five-year renovation, Belmont Park was re-opened on May 20th, 1968. The main grandstand now had the capacity to seat over 100,000 spectators making it America’s largest thoroughbred horse racing stadium. (Even this ludicrous capacity was challenged on June 5th, 2004 when 120,319 fans turned up to witness Triple Crown hopeful Smarty Jones fall just short to a 36-1 longshot named Birdstone.) Ultimately, Belmont Park was closed again in 2022 due to both normal erosion and so the facilities could be upgraded to host yearround thoroughbred horse racing and training.

The third and culminating edition of Belmont Park, which will officially open in September of 2026, is paired with what amounts to a $455 million price tag. It’s also worth noting that this is the first “from the ground up” thoroughbred racetrack venture that has taken place in America in forty years. However, ahead of detailing all the “bells and whistles”, I want to congratulate the NYRA (New York Racing Association) for preserving the one operational aspect that sets Belmont Park apart from every other North American racetrack.

Not counting a handful of ovals that are classified as “bull rings” (these strips measure 3/4 of a mile around), every racetrack on our continent spans one mile in circumference, save one. Totally unique in its configuration, Belmont Park’s main track measures 1 ½ miles and due to its wide sweeping turns and lengthy home stretch, it is considered the “fairest” racetrack in the land. Two separate turf courses are situated

inside Belmont Park’s main track and logically, they are likewise the largest of their kind in the U.S. The brand new 1-mile synthetic tapeta strip that is being installed inside Belmont Park’s turf courses comes with a five-star safety rating and will help pave the way for New York’s first all-weather year-round thoroughbred horse racing meet!

Belmont Park’s new main grandstand will not be as ponderous as its predecessor; nevertheless, it’s set to be a bonefide esthetic beauty that will be capable of comfortably housing more than its fair share of turf zealots. State-of-the-art luxury suites, local business blocks and various exotic concessions will festoon this structure’s corridors yet there is one contemporary feature that I’m particularly excited about. So, a tunnel that will connect the grandstand with Belmont Park’s 45-acre infield will allow tens of thousands of additional patrons to congregate inside the property’s manicured core on major event days like the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival!

The forthcoming rendition of Belmont Park will levy staggering economic prosperity in Long

Island and the surrounding areas. In just the short-term alone, 3,700 good paying construction jobs have been created. When talking long term, dependable monetary models show that the latest edition of “Big Sandy” (Belmont Park’s primary nickname; due to the main track’s “beach like” consistency) will generate over $150 million in annual economic output. This is not to mention the over $10 million in new annual state and local tax revenue.

In one respect, the forthcoming version of Belmont Park has already “won” in terms of ROI since “Big Sandy” will be the backdrop of the 2027 Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships. This will mark the first time the Breeders’ Cup has returned to Elmont, NY since 2005. Finally, in the words of NYRA President and CEO David O’ Rourke, “The transformation of Belmont Park will secure the future of thoroughbred racing in New York state, create thousands of jobs and drive tourism to Long Island and the region for decades to come.”

As mentioned earlier, Belmont Park is not the only Triple Crown

Series host site that is committed to keeping up with the times. As advertised, Pimlico Race Course is following suit and most of the facility was scheduled to be leveled immediately following this year’s 150th edition of the Preakness Stakes. Now according to the Maryland Stadium Authority (the agency that is supervising Pimlico Race Course’s reconstruction), Pimlico’s forthcoming clubhouse has gained its inspiration from storied Baltimore landmarks like the Rawlings Conservatory in Druid Hill Park and the original Pimlico clubhouse. Future patrons can also expect to see an on-site hotel and contiguous convention spaces.

Naturally, many who comprise “Horse Racing Nation” were concerned about the fate of the Preakness Stakes in leu of catching wind that Pimlico Race Course would undergo a lengthy recalibration. Thankfully, Laurel Park, which is situated 24 miles south of Baltimore, will host the Preakness Stakes until that time when Pimlico Race Course makes its triumphant rise from the ashes. A top-notch venue in its own right, Laurel Park has acted as a grand stage for elite equine performances since 1911.

In that it showcases planet Earth’s most coveted horse race, Churchill Downs refuses to be outdone in terms of garish and gaudy upgrades. In summation, the home of the Kentucky Derby recently put the brakes on a multi-year series of capital projects that when all is said and done, would have cost close to one billion dollars. The projects were recently put on hold due to multiple reasons but mainly uncertainty in construction costs and other market conditions. Track management considers the project’s budget a small price to

pay in exchange for exponentially enhancing the hallowed acreage that sprawls beneath thoroughbred horse racing’s most recognized monument, the famed Twin Spires

If you tuned into either the 2024 or 2025 edition of the Kentucky Derby, then you gazed upon the centerpiece of the aforementioned ten figure restoration. A $200 million undertaking measuring 12,000 sq. ft. that took two years to construct, Churchill Downs’ new paddock is the most progressive saddling enclosure ever conceived by the hand of man. Complete with tiered standing areas that can accommodate 3,000 spectators, this Roman Colosseum-like enclosure also boasts an adjacent: Woodford Reserve Paddock Club, Club SI (Sports Illustrated) and a secret (and mostly off-limits) Bourbon Barrel Tunnel.

Three other major upgrades tied to Churchill Downs that are in the project scope, when and if it happens, include: The Skye Project ($455 to $465 million), The Conservatory Project ($320 to $330 million) and the Infield General Admission project ($60 to $70 million). The Skye Project will

focus on installing 13,300 improved seats, countless hospitality coves and a plethora of world-class amenities in that area situated just past the finish line. The Conservatory Project will replace the temporary seats in the infield (which line the homestretch) with 7,000 permanent premium spots and a total of 36 VIP suites. The Infield General Admission Project will introduce three new brick and mortar infield buildings that will amplify the comfort of those attending the Kentucky Derby. In conclusion, I’d like to say that as I compiled this article, an overwhelming sense of joy enveloped my psyche. See, ever since I fell in love with the “Sport of Kings”, I have heard naysayers spew how horse racing, along with its illustrious Triple Crown Series, is destined to be entirely defunct. Well, considering a fortune that would make King Solomon envious has been wielded to preserve Belmont Park, Pimlico Race Course and Churchill Downs, I’d say the future of thoroughbred Horse Racing in America and the Triple Crown Series is infallibly secure; and for this, yours truly is eternally grateful!

THREE CARD POKER: WILD WINNING STREAKS

Of all the poker-based games that have carved out niches in table pits, Three Card Poker pays out its top jackpot the most often. That makes some unusual streaks not only possible—but inevitable, given enough play.

Take the reader who once emailed to share their experience of being dealt four consecutive straight flushes, each worth a 40-1 payoff on the Pair Plus portion of the game. That might pale in comparison to the 1,000-1 bonanza for a royal in Let It Ride or a progressive jackpot that can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars in Caribbean Stud. But any frequent player of Three Card Poker will tell

you that straight flushes, with 1-in460 odds, do come around. For most players, royals in Caribbean Stud and Let It Ride are a oncein-a-lifetime—if ever—event, with odds of 1 in 649,740.

Four straight flushes in a row? Even in a game with frequent jackpots, that’s something truly special.

The player wrote, “I was playing Three Card Poker and was dealt four consecutive straight flushes. The first two were identical: 3, 4, 5 of hearts. I would like to know the mathematical odds of this happening. How do you calculate this sequence of events?

“Needless to say, I was just overwhelmed—floating in the clouds. I was surprised the casino didn’t really acknowledge that it was a big deal. I wasn’t looking for anything, but I thought it would be good advertisement for them. Guess I was wrong.”

How big a deal was it?

To be precise: there are 22,100 possible three-card combinations in a 52-card deck. Of those, 48 are straight flushes—meaning we see a straight flush about once every 460.417 hands.

To get the odds of two consecutive straight flushes, multiply 460.417 by 460.417. That’s about 1 in

211,984 trials. Add a third straight flush, and you’re at 1 in 97.6 million. A fourth? Now you’re looking at 1 in 44.9 billion.

But this streak was even more improbable than that astronomical long shot. Remember: the first two straight flushes were identical. After any hand, your chances of receiving the same exact hand again are 1 in 22,100.

So, the odds of being dealt a straight flush followed by an identical straight flush are 1 in 460.417 × 22,100—that’s already over 10 million to 1. Add two more straight flushes after that, and we’ve left the billions behind. Try 1 in 2.16 trillion.

You might ask: “OK, so how often would a casino deal a streak like this?” It’s an extreme long shot for an individual player, but casinos deal a lot of hands—so is it inevitable that someone, sometime, will hit a streak like that?

Let’s put it this way: Royal flush jackpots in Caribbean Stud don’t hit every day, do they? Those progressive pots are usually months in the making. This Three Card Poker streak? It was more than 3 million times less likely than landing a royal flush in Caribbean Stud.

Say a casino has two Three Card Poker tables, always full, with seven players each, playing 50 hands per hour, 24/7, 365 days a year. That’s 876,000 hands per year. At that rate, a streak like this—a straight flush, followed by the same straight flush, followed by two more straight flushes—would happen about once every 2.5 million years.

Now, I don’t know how much the player was wagering, but I’m sure it made for a nice payday. On the

Pair Plus portion of Three Card Poker, straight flushes pay 40-1, the highest payoff at the table. If the player bet $10 per hand, they would have won $400, then $400 again, and again, and again— for a total of $1,600. Not bad, even if it doesn’t quite reflect the astronomical odds.

Now imagine if they parlayed their winnings, betting all of it on each subsequent hand. While table limits would make this impossible, just for fun: they’d win $400 on the first hand, then $16,000, then $640,000, and finally $25.6 million.

That’s extreme, but wild turns of the cards do happen in Three Card Poker. I once had my first straight flush come on the very next hand after another player got three of a kind—the two highest-ranking hands, dealt back to back.

When I picked up my cards, I nodded toward the dealer and said, “She just dealt three of a kind and a straight flush back to back.”

No one thought I was serious. The dealer laughed. Another player said, “Sure—wouldn’t that be nice?” It wasn’t until the dealer turned my cards face up that everyone realized I wasn’t just joking.

And not long ago, I saw another kind of streak. It wasn’t in the league of the four straight flushes, but it was still a sight to behold.

Three women who clearly knew each other were sitting near third base. I was at first base, with an empty seat between me and a man in his 30s. Another empty seat was to his left.

The woman closest to the center of the table asked, “Does anyone ever win at this game?” as she

pulled a $100 bill from her purse. She’d apparently taken some losses earlier.

She put $5 on the ante and $5 on Pair Plus—and then she was off and running.

First hand: a pair. Then a flush. Two more pairs. A straight. Then a pair, another flush, and another pair. Eight winning hands in a row, winning both on the ante bet and Pair Plus.

I don’t know exactly how much she won on the ante portion. On several hands, the dealer didn’t qualify, so she only won the ante and had her play bet returned. I wasn’t tracking closely enough to count how many times the dealer qualified with Queen-high or better.

But the Pair Plus streak was eyecatching. She bet $5 each time. She hit five pairs ($5 each), two flushes ($15 each), and a straight ($30)— for a total of $85.

We win Pair Plus bets about once every 3.9 hands, so winning eight in a row is rare. Two in a row comes about once in 15.2 trials; three in a row, once in 59.3. Eight in a row? Once in 53,320 trials. You’re 10 times more likely to draw a three-card straight flush (worth $200 on a $5 bet) than to win eight Pair Plus hands in a row—worth $85 in this case.

Along the way, the young man at mid-table asked her if she still thought no one could win. She laughed, they chatted. During her streak, I lost $25—and left shortly after her streak ended. I couldn’t leave sooner. I had to see how it played out—to add one more Three Card Poker oddity to my collection.

MASTERING THE WHEEL: Roulette Strategy

Roulette, one of the most iconic and enduring games in any casino, combines simple rules with suspenseful gameplay. At first glance, the spinning wheel and bouncing ball may seem like pure chance—and to a large extent, they are. But savvy players know that understanding probabilities, bet types, and strategic approaches can improve both enjoyment and decision-making at the table. Here’s a guide to the basics of roulette, the best strategies to use, and the statistical realities behind every spin.

The Basics: How to Play Roulette

Roulette involves a spinning wheel divided into numbered slots. In American roulette, there are 38 pockets: numbers 1 through 36, plus 0 and 00. European roulette has 37 pockets (only one 0), which slightly improves the odds for players.

Before the wheel spins, players place bets on where they believe the ball will land. Bets can be placed on:

• Single numbers (straight-up)

• Groups of numbers (splits, corners, streets)

• Colors (red or black)

• Odd or even numbers

• High (19–36) or low (1–18) numbers

• Columns or dozens

After bets are placed, the dealer spins the wheel in one direction and rolls the ball in the opposite direction. When the ball lands in a slot, all losing bets are cleared, and winners are paid based on the type of bet made.

Understanding Roulette Odds and Probabilities

Every roulette spin is independent, meaning the outcome of one spin does not affect the next. Because of this, no system can “predict” or influence where the ball will land. However, understanding the probabilities of each type of bet is crucial.

Payouts and House Edge

The difference in house edge between European and American roulette is significant: 2.70% vs. 5.26%. Always choose European roulette when available, as that single 0 instead of the 0 and 00 nearly doubles your chances over time.

Best Strategies for Playing Roulette

Although roulette is a game of chance, players can apply betting strategies to manage risk and potentially improve outcomes over time.

The Martingale System

This is the most well-known betting strategy. You double your bet after every loss, aiming to recover all losses with a single win.

Example: Bet $10 on red. Lose? Bet $20. Lose again? Bet $40. Win? You gain back all previous losses plus a $10 profit.

Pros: Can be effective in short bursts.

Cons: Table limits and bankroll limitations can make it dangerous—after a string of losses, bets quickly escalate and when you do win after a streak of losses, you only win one unit.

The Reverse Martingale (Paroli)

This approach is the opposite of the Martingale: you double your bet after a win, not a loss.

Goal: Maximize hot streaks while minimizing losses during cold ones.

Pros: Less risk, more disciplined, and focuses on building streaks.

Cons: Wins can be wiped out quickly by a bad spin.

The D’Alembert Strategy

A more conservative system where you increase your bet by one unit after a loss and decrease by one unit after a win. This method aims to balance wins and losses gradually.

Pros: Lower risk than Martingale.

Cons: Still vulnerable to long losing streaks, and profits build slowly.

Flat Betting

This is the most consistent approach: betting the same amount on even-money bets (red/black, odd/even, etc.) every time.

Pros: Reduces risk and variance. Helps you play longer and enjoy the game.

Cons: Less excitement and fewer big wins, but best for bankroll preservation.

Key Tips and Pitfalls to Avoid

Stick to Even-Money Bets - These have nearly 50/50 odds and are ideal for longer play sessions.

Avoid Five-Number Bet on American Roulette - This bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3) has the worst odds in the game, with a house edge of 7.89%.

Use a Budget and Time Limit - Always decide beforehand how much you’re willing to spend, and stick to it.

Don’t Chase Losses - No spin “owes” you anything. Stay disciplined and avoid emotional betting.

Take Advantage of European Roulette and “En Prison” RulesIn some European games, if you make an even-money bet and the ball lands on 0, the bet is held (not lost) and can be retrieved if it wins the next spin. This lowers the house edge to 1.35%.

MASTERING PAI GOW POKER: Strategy, Odds, and How to Play Like a Pro

If you enjoy poker but want a slower-paced, lower-volatility casino game with a unique twist, Pai Gow Poker might be your ideal game. Blending traditional poker rules with the ancient Chinese game of Pai Gow, this table game offers plenty of opportunities to reduce the house edge with smart strategy and patience. Here’s a quick overview of how to play as well as some probabilities and strategies to give you a great start to winning ant Pai Gow!

The Basics: How the Game Works

Pai Gow Poker is typically played with a 53-card deck (standard 52 cards plus a single joker) and pits the player against the dealer, not other players. The game begins with each player receiving seven cards. The objective is to split these seven cards into two poker hands:

• A five-card “high” hand (also called the “back” hand)

• A two-card “low” hand (also called the “front” hand)

The only rule for splitting is that your five-card hand must rank higher than your two-card hand. For example, if you had a pair of Kings and a pair of 8s, you must place the Kings in the five-card hand and the 8s in the two-card hand.

The dealer (or “bank”) does the same, and both hands are then compared:

• If both of your hands beat both of the dealer’s hands, you win.

• If one hand wins and one hand loses, it’s a push (no money lost or won).

• If both hands lose, you lose your wager.

• If there’s a tie in any hand, the dealer wins (house advantage).

The Role of the Joker

The joker in Pai Gow Poker isn’t fully wild. It can only be used as an ace, or to complete a straight, flush, or straight flush. This limited use keeps the probabilities of strong hands fairly close to those in standard poker.

House Edge and Payouts

Pai Gow Poker is known for a low house edge, making it a popular choice for players who want to extend their bankrolls. The house edge is typically around 2.5% when playing against the dealer and can be as low as 1.5% if you’re banking (which players are sometimes allowed to do). In many casinos, a 5% commission is taken from winning hands when you beat the dealer, which slightly impacts your expected returns.

Most bets pay even money. Some versions offer bonus side bets (like a “Fortune Bonus”), which pay based on premium hands like four-of-a-kind or a full house. While fun, these have a much higher house edge (upwards of 7-10%) and aren’t recommended for strategic players.

Pai Gow Hand Probabilities

Over 80% of hands will be one pair or two pair or less. That’s why understanding how to manage two-pair and one-pair hands is key to a strong strategy.

Best Strategy for Playing Pai Gow Poker

1. Always Follow the House Way (or Better)

Most casinos use a “house way” to set the dealer’s hand, and you can use similar logic to improve your odds. When in doubt, set your hand conservatively to ensure your two-card hand doesn’t overpower your five-card hand.

2. Two Pairs: Split Smart

If you have two pairs, whether to split them depends on their ranks:

• Split if one pair is Aces, Kings, or Queens.

• Split medium pairs (Jacks through 7s) depending on the strength of your other cards.

• Keep both in the five-card hand if they’re low pairs (6s or less) unless your two-card hand would be very weak otherwise.

3. Three of a Kind: Usually Keep Together

Most of the time, you should keep three-of-a-kind in the five-card hand. However, if it’s three Aces, split it into a pair of Aces and one Ace to strengthen your two-card hand.

4. Full House: Always Split

Always play a full house by putting the three-of-a-kind in the five-card hand and the pair in the two-card hand. This keeps both hands competitive.

5. Straights and Flushes: Depends

If you have a straight or flush, you might need to break it up if it helps strengthen your two-card hand (such as creating a high pair). This is a judgment call—breaking up a weak straight to make a pair of Aces in the front is often worth it.

WINNING AT SLOTS: Strategies, Stats, and Smart Play

Slot machines dominate the casino floor for a reason. Flashy, fast-paced, and full of promise, they account for nearly 70% of gaming revenue in many U.S. casinos. But behind the reels and lights lies a system built on mathematical precision and probability. While there’s no surefire way to beat the machines, understanding how they work and choosing the right games can boost your odds and your enjoyment. Here’s an overview for how to play smarter and potentially win more at slots.

Slot Machine Basics

At its core, a slot machine is a random number generator (RNG). Whether it’s a classic three-reel game or a modern video slot with bonus rounds and dozens of paylines, every spin is independent and determined by the RNG. When you press “Spin,” the outcome is already set before the reels finish turning.

Key slot terms to know:

• Payline: A line that crosses the reels and determines where symbols must land to win.

• Volatility: Measures risk. Low volatility slots pay smaller, frequent wins; high volatility slots pay less often but can offer bigger jackpots.

• Return to Player (RTP): Theoretical percentage of wagered money a slot returns to players over time. Example: A 96% RTP means $96 paid back per $100 wagered—over millions of spins.

• Denomination: The value per credit. Higher denominations often come with better payout percentages.

Best Strategy for Playing Slots

There’s no “perfect” way to win at slots, but there are strategies and best practices that can increase your chances of walking away a winner or, at the very least, getting more value out of your play.

1. Choose the Right Machines: Not all slots are created equal. Some are designed to pay more than others. Here’s how to find better ones:

• Look for High RTP Games: Aim for games with an RTP of 95% or higher. Many online slots list RTP in the help menu. In brick-and-mortar casinos, it’s harder to find, but online research and casino reports can help.

• Play Higher Denomination Machines: Generally, $1 or $5 machines return more than penny slots. According to Nevada Gaming Control Board data, penny slots average 88–90% RTP, while $1 machines often range from 94–96%.

• Avoid Progressive Jackpots if You’re Budget-Conscious: While the idea of hitting a million-dollar jackpot is appealing, progressive slots often have lower base RTPs to offset the top prize. They’re fun but not ideal for maximizing returns over time.

2. Maximize Promotions and Bonuses: Take advantage of casino loyalty programs and online casino bonuses. Comp points, free play, and match bonuses can stretch your bankroll significantly. Sign up for players clubs, use your card every time you play, and don’t ignore free spin offers online.

3. Set a Budget and Stick to It

Set a win limit and a loss limit before you start. Decide ahead of time how much you’re willing to lose, and don’t chase losses. Likewise, if you hit a big win, consider cashing out and walking away rather than feeding it all back in.

4. Know Your Volatility Tolerance

Low volatility games like Starburst or Wheel of Fortune Classic are better for longer play sessions and casual players.

High volatility slots like Dead or Alive II or Buffalo Gold may offer big wins, but you could hit long losing streaks.

Understanding Probabilities and Payouts

Let’s break down some statistical realities of slot machines.

• Odds of Winning: Each reel has a finite number of symbols and virtual stops (which are mapped to physical symbols). A typical three-reel slot may have 20 symbols per reel, but up to 100 virtual stops—making the odds of hitting the jackpot much smaller than they appear.

Example: If each reel has 100 virtual stops, and one jackpot symbol per reel:

Odds of hitting the jackpot = 1/100 × 1/100 × 1/100 = 1 in 1,000,000.

• Return vs. Hit Frequency: RTP tells you how much is returned over millions of spins, but it doesn’t tell you how often you’ll win. Hit frequency refers to how often any winning combination occurs (not necessarily profit). A game with 30% hit frequency pays something on 3 out of 10 spins—but that “something” may be less than your bet.

Best Slots to Play (2025 Popular Picks)

• Double Diamond (IGT): A classic 3-reel slot with a simple paytable and decent RTP.

• Quick Hit Platinum (Bally): Medium volatility, frequent bonus features, and good mid-level payouts.

• Buffalo Gold (Aristocrat): High volatility with massive win potential on bonus rounds.

Final Thoughts: Smart Play is the Best Strategy

Slots are games of chance, and no skill or system can change the RNG. But by choosing games with higher RTPs, managing your bankroll, and understanding volatility, you can make smarter decisions that extend your play and maximize entertainment value.

Remember: casinos build slots to be fun—not just profitable. The best strategy is one that balances your budget, preferences, and expectations. Enjoy the spin, play responsibly, and may the reels fall in your favor.

HORSERACING: Give Them a Second Chance

It is my experience that when it comes to most horse players, there is an air relevant to that evil Sensei from the original Karate Kid movie who incessantly preaches, “No mercy!”. What I mean is, 99% of punters who lose money on an equine will instantly sever the relationship for all eternity. There is no second chance, or attitude anent to “we’ll get them next time”. Nope, it’s strictly, “That hayburner cost me two bucks! Send them to the glue factory!”

Truly, truly I say to you, turf fans who adopt this shortsighted mentality are only destined for supplementary disappointment and frustration. Reason being, I can’t begin to tell you the number of times I have seen a racer who finished up the track, subsequently win “for fun” their next time out. Moreover, “playbacks” (as they are typically called) are capable of spawning some of the most lucrative parimutual payouts imaginable!

While instances concerning “playbacks” abound across horse racing’s broad landscape, the Preakness Stakes (the second jewel in thoroughbred horse racing’s Triple Crown Series) is nothing less than a breeding ground for equine redemption. The dynamic behind this phenomenon is based on one fascinating statistic that has perpetually reared its ugly head for over one and a half centuries. Namely, the best horse on paper typically exits Louisville with a broken heart rather than the Golden Jubilee Cup (Kentucky Derby trophy).

Of course, there are infinite theories as to why some of the truly great racers of all time don’t have the words “Kentucky Derby” etched under the “achievements” section of their resume. Personally, I am of the belief that it mostly comes down to field size. See, the “Run for the Roses” is open to twenty entrants and with that much horseflesh littering the racetrack, it’s darn near impossible to secure a “clean trip”. Conversely, the Preakness Stakes usually showcases a much smaller field which enables the “cream to rise to the top”.

Truth be told, I was dealt a hard lesson regarding Preakness Stakes “playbacks” back in 2010 that I failed to apply during this year’s edition of the Triple Crown Series. So, fifteen years ago, I fell head over heels in love with a horse named Lookin at Lucky; a “freak of nature” who went postward as the 6-1 favorite in the 136th edition of the Kentucky Derby.

In a cruel twist of fate, Lookin at Lucky unluckily drew post number 1 for the “Run for the Roses”

but seeing as how I can often be a “stiffednecked” handicapper, I reasoned that my muse was talented enough to overcome this marked disadvantage. (Note: Drawing the number 1 post for the Kentucky Derby is considered a “death blow” because directly after the break, the field angles in towards the rail to “save ground”. Hence, the horse breaking from the “one hole” is often continually “pinballed” off Churchill Downs’ inside barrier.)

Ultimately, this was the somber scenario that consumed Lookin at Lucky and via the race’s replay, one can clearly see my $300 win wager “go up in smoke” as the field passes the grandstand for the first time. When the dust had settled, a horse named Super Saver had won the day yet inside the hours that followed, I couldn’t help but think that this equine’s victory was an absolute fluke. Why? Well, seven weeks earlier I had backed Super Saver in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby only to see him procure a paltry third place finish.

Nevertheless, when the Preakness Stakes rolled around two weeks later, I bought into the hype surrounding the Derby champ. Meaning, instead of placing a “playback” win wager on Lookin at Lucky, I purchased a $50 exacta box that involved Lookin at Lucky and Super Saver. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that Lookin at Lucky won the Preakness Stakes while Super Saver finished in eighth place. (Interestingly enough, Super Saver never won another race after his Kentucky Derby triumph.)

Ironically, I bet the favored Journalism to win this year’s edition of the Kentucky Derby only to watch him get checked into the rail during the early stages of the race. Certainly, you’d think that my selection’s gallant second place finish (despite his less-than-ideal trip) would persuade yours truly to pursue a “playback” win wager in the Preakness. Unfortunately, I again bet an exacta box that involved the eventual winner (Journalism) and another horse who I think is still running. (Incidentally, a 15-1 shot named Gosger ran second.)

While my story is sad to tell, you can benefit from the scars I carry. It all boils down to extending grace. Don’t bail on a horse you love just because they did you dirty the first time out (especially in the Kentucky Derby). Remember that there are literally thousands of factors that determine the outcome of any horse race so it’s very likely that your hero’s (or heroin’s) defeat was beyond their control.
