Dear Member A very happy, healthy and peaceful New Year to you all, and let’s hope that the predictions of a better year for beef come about!

With just two months before the first big sale of the year, the Spring Show & Sale at Exeter on Wednesday 25th March, you will find inside a copy of the Sale Schedule. The closing date for entries is Monday 16th February, so please request entry forms as soon as you can if you wish to bring cattle. Please also remember that you must be CHeCS accredited for BVD for the first time at a Society Sale.

The Annual General Meeting takes place the evening before the Exeter Sale, on Tuesday 24th March, and please would you let us have your bookings for the Dinner and hotel rooms as appropriate. This year there will be an Auction of Promises after the Meeting, and we would welcome any gifts or Promises that you might wish to offer. It is always a lively entertaining event, and we would encourage you to come along and join in the fun.

If you would like to make a nomination for Linda’s Trophy please would you use the form at the back of this newsletter. It is a great opportunity to reward someone for exceptional contribution to breed promotion in the last year, and the winner will be announced at the AGM. Work is beginning on the Genomic Predictions project and there is a great deal to do to build the so-called base population, but we have Council’s backing to get there as quickly as we can. The Pelvic Measurement Study is also well underway, and we are all very grateful to anyone who is involved by allowing data to be collected for the benefit of the whole breed.

Plans for our new promotional event this year, the South Devons’ Performance Championship at the NEC on 8th/9th July, are coming together and a full schedule will soon be available on the Livestock Event website. If you are performance recording please support the Show by bringing cattle – it is such a huge opportunity for breed publicity, as well as a chance to advertise your herd.

We are in desperate need for support this year for the Devon County Show – please consider whether you could bring cattle to maintain our presence here!

We have a few calendars remaining for 2015, at a reduced price of £6.50 – please let Debbie know if you would like to place an order.

SPRING SHOW & SALE EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE, MATFORD, EXETER Wednesday 25th March A. All animals to arrive at the Livestock Centre between 11.00 and 14.00 on Tuesday 24th March.

B. Our veterinary inspector, Duncan Findlay MRCVS, will be carrying out inspections on all animals at the Centre on Tuesday 24th March between the hours of 13.00 and 16.00. If animals are not made ready to be inspected during those times the Society reserves the right to refuse entry to the Sale. Any member who has an animal rejected will have their entry fee refunded.

C. All measurements (frame scores) of bulls will be shown at the sale. EBVs will be published in the catalogue for cattle from Breedplan recorded herds, and will be on display on each pen as applicable. Bulls registered after 1st January 2010 must be DNA tested for myostatin and the result published in the sale catalogue. If animals are declared polled they must also be DNA tested and the result published in the sale catalogue.

D. All vendors are required to complete a Society Herd Health Declaration and submit it with their completed Entry Forms. All Sale animals must be from CHeCS accredited BVD free herds and must be double vaccinated for BVD. Vendors must supply their CHeCS scheme provider’s health certificate as appropriate (eg SAC, HiHealth etc) E. Judging will commence at 08.30 on Wednesday morning and the Sale will commence at midday.

CLASSES BULLS 1. Bulls from 12 months to 2 ¾ years of age. This class may be divided.

2. Bulls over the age of 2 ¾ years (for sale only).

FEMALES 1. Cow of any age, in calf or with calf at foot.

2. Heifers under the age of 3 years 3 months on the day of sale, with calf at foot or warranted to calve by that age.

3. Heifers from 1 year 3 months to 2 years 3 months, in calf, running with the bull or not served.

4. Heifers from 9 months to 15 months of age.

5. Non halter-broken females (for sale only), classes as for halter-broken.

NOTES 1. ENTRY FEES: Bulls £30 + VAT Females (including calf at foot) £30 + VAT Animals not forward due to illness but with a veterinary certificate will receive a £10 + VAT reimbursement.

The entry fee, pedigree certificate, herd health declaration, and organic certificate (where applicable) must be enclosed when returning the completed entry form for each animal.

2. INSPECTION OF ALL ENTRIES Once at the Sales Centre all bulls will be weighed and all halter broken entries inspected and checked for locomotion, temperament, active infection (eg ringworm, etc), and defects (eg jaws, testicles, hernia, etc) by the veterinary inspector. Those found to be not up to standard will be rejected.

No entry thus rejected may be sold through the ring and must be removed from the sale pens according to the instructions of the Chief Steward.

Halter-broken and non-halter broken females will also be subject to an inspection, with particular attention paid to jaw, legs, locomotion and feet.

Failure to meet the above measurements will mean automatic rejection from the sale.

3. DISPERSAL SALES If a member wishes to disperse his/her herd immediately after the Society Sale they may do so provided that it is the whole herd. The cattle are subject to a reduced entry fee of £10 + VAT per animal, which must be enclosed with the entry forms and pedigree certificates and received by the closing date. Dispersals at Society Sales, although not subject to veterinary inspection, are required to comply with current health standards.

4. JUDGING Animals bred by the judge will have to be placed by another person. The person so nominated by the Society will not enter the ring until all other animals in the class concerned have been placed by the judge. The person nominated will then enter the ring and place the animal concerned.

If a judge enters an animal for any Society Sale it may be SOLD only, but the entry in the catalogue will remain in the appropriate show class. The animal will be paraded in its class but will be removed at the instruction of the steward before judging.

5. CATALOGUE INFORMATION Up to 50 words of information may be provided by the Vendors for the catalogue. An additional 30 words may be added at a charge of £0.10/word.

EBVs - all Breedplan recording members will have their animals’ EBVs published in the catalogue as appropriate. Caesarean births - members are reminded that they must declare caesarean births for all entries at Society Sales. Herd health declarations – must be completed by all entrants and submitted to the South Devon office at the same time as the completed entry forms. Information from the completed declaration will be published in the sale catalogue. No other information relating to herd health, or individual animal health status will be published in the catalogue. Vendors may display additional information on the animal pen. The Herd Health Declaration and CHeCS certificate will be displayed on the animal pen.

6. TB TESTING All animals are required to have been tested clear of TB within 60 days prior to the Sale date.

AUCTION OF PROMISES

The Devon Hotel, Tuesday 24th March We are now ready to receive your offers of donations, please, whatever they may be and wherever they are promised to materialise! The last two Auctions each raised £5,200, and it’s all for a good cause – to promote the breed!

In recent years donations have included offers of accommodation around the country; meals; fine wines; fishing opportunities; semen. Just let your imagination roam and see what ideas you can come up with to help the work of your Society.

Details of all the Lots donated will be published nearer the time, and there will be an opportunity to make postal bids if you are not able to attend the Auction itself.

EXHIBITOR DISCOUNTS To help with costs, the Society is again offering travel discounts to South Devon exhibitors at the National Show, as follows: All exhibitors (except in the host region, Wessex) will receive £10 per animal forward (not including calves), plus per animal forward: From Regions 1, 4, 5, and 6 £20 From Region 2 £10 From Region 7 £30 These amounts will be credited after the Show.

HERD BOOKS The new edition of the Herd Book which publishes pedigree registrations in 2013 is now available. If you have ordered one please let us know if you would like it posted or if you would prefer to collect it at, eg, the Exeter Sale.

NATIONAL BEEF ASSOCIATION TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE As of the 1st January this year, the Revised Terms & Conditions of Sale belonging to the National Beef Association are available free of charge to fully paid-up breed societies such as ourselves for use at breed society sales.

Formerly a charge was made through the Auctioneer to cover the NBA cost, to both vendor and purchaser.

The Terms and Conditions of Sale have been revised by the Pedigree Committee of the NBA, and been approved by veterinary, insurance and legal professionals as a sound basis for settling any potential disputes between buyer and seller. It goes without saying that, if there are grounds for disputes, it is always better to settle any issues privately as soon as possible, without expensive and damaging recourse to legal proceedings.

If you are an individual member of the National Beef Association you can also benefit from the use of these Terms when you sell an animal privately.

Annual membership of the NBA is £75 – to include use of the Terms and a weekly newsletter which is a very informative publication. More information from the NBA, 01434 601005, info@nationalbeefassociation.com.

SOUTH DEVONS’ PERFORMANCE CHAMPIONSHIP THE LIVESTOCK EVENT, NEC 8th & 9th July 2015 Plans are coming together nicely for this new event for the breed, which will be incorporated within The Livestock Event at the NEC. The schedule will be available shortly – let us know if you would like a copy. We have booked an initial 40 stalls, and entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Animals must be from performance recorded herds and have published EBVs. Classes will be held for bulls and heifers aged between 1 year and 2 ½ years on 8th July 2015, and will be sub-divided according to entries.

There will be awards for male and female champions, for male and female with most points on inspection and performance, and for overall breed champion.

The stall fee will be £50 plus VAT, of which £30 plus VAT will be refunded by the Society for each animal forward.

Please help to make this a really high profile show for the breed, and let us know if you would like any further information!

SHOW PREPARATION DAY Region 1 (Cornwall) in conjunction with the Truro Club, and by kind invitation of the Laity family are holding a new event geared especially towards youngsters (but not excluding adults!)

The Day will focus on calf leading, and preparation of an animal for shows, and will be held at Carlyon Farm, Kea, Truro, Cornwall, TR3 6AJ starting at 10.30 am on Wednesday 18th February.

NATIONAL YOUNG SHOW STARS BEEF CHALLENGE A new industry event is being staged on Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd April at the Three Counties Showground, which is advertised as ‘a competitive challenge devised to further the skills of young stock enthusiasts and to enable them to display their abilities in a range of cattle keeping and presentation techniques’.

Breed Societies are being invited to sponsor teams of three individuals to attend and be judged on their teamwork, stock judging, cattle clipping and presentation, ring craft and knowledge of the livestock sector, with the ultimate winning team getting the chance to take advantage of an overseas trip.

Competitors must be aged between 14 and 24 years, with at least one member being under 18, and will have two cattle each under 20 months of age. The team has to build a stand in an area of about 10 ft by 12 ft, in which they can present the cattle and promotional material.

This is another good opportunity to promote yourselves and your breed. If you are interested in taking part, the deadline is Saturday 14th February, and we can submit and sponsor a team entry from the office. More information is available on the website www.nationalyoungshowstars.com.

LINDA’S TROPHY Members are invited to submit nominations for the Linda Turpie Rounsevell Memorial Trophy. This Award is made to the nominated member or nonmember judged to have done the most for breed promotion in the past year, in whatever role that might be.

The nominations will be judged by the Caroline Poultney (Secretary), Robert Shinner (President), and Ian Rounsevell, and the award will be made at the AGM in March.

When NASA started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work at zero gravity.

To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion developing a pen that wrote at zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300C. The Russians used a pencil.
