Dear Member I am very sorry to have to tell you that Pat Rickett very recently passed away after a lengthy illness, and now may she rest in peace. We offer our very sincere condolences to Tony, Tamzin and Rob, and Daniel and Laura. Since it was established in 1972, Pat has had a huge influence within the Midland Club, and her enthusiasm for the breed has resulted in many new herds establishing throughout the Midlands. Her famous newsletters as Club Secretary have brought laughter and encouragement to members, and a certain amount of agreement with her clearly stated views on politicians, civil servants and officialdom! Pat served on the Society Council in the 1990s, and was President just a few years ago. The Ricketts’ very generous hospitality has been enjoyed by many, especially when the Royal Show was still going and the Ricketts and Hadleys took alternate turns to host a supper for exhibitors each year, which was always much appreciated. Pat and Tony also hosted a very well-attended Open Day in 2012 to celebrate 40 years of keeping South Devons in the Juniper Herd at Wood Farm. With Pat at the helm Club members have shared many happy Farm Walks and meetings, and of course hold an annual Sale which has just taken place this past weekend at Stratford. There has been a private burial at Wood Farm; and friends are invited to join the Ricketts at the farm for a Celebration of Pat’s life on Saturday 14th May. In Tony’s words, “Pat discovered South Devons in 1972 … and never recovered! These gentle cattle and their friendly breeders became her life’s interest, and in Everdon ‘the best place in the world’, her enthusiasm prospered. Pat lived, died and is buried here amongst the cattle she admired, in the place she loved, and at 12.00 noon on 14th May we will say a few words about her life. All are welcome to meet friends old and new, it will be VERY informal!!! We look forward to seeing you.” Pat will be hugely missed, but those whose lives she touched have very special memories to hold on to. My best wishes Caroline

NATIONAL SHOW 2016 Hosted by the Royal Cheshire County Show, 21st & 22nd June The closing date for entries has been extended until the end of May because of the changes to TB movement testing rules, and the impact that this is already having on shows close to the Low Risk Area. The Royal Cheshire has submitted an application to Defra seeking an exemption from the new post movement test which has become a requirement for cattle moving back to the Low Risk Area from the High Risk Area. So for any exhibitor who might think they have missed the deadline, please do not worry, but do send in your entries as soon as you can – the more the merrier to make a great show of South Devons! Barbecue On Monday evening there will be a barbecue by the Society marquee for all exhibitors, members, sponsors and guests, and it would be lovely if you are able to come along. Food and drink is being sponsored but we do need to know how many to cater for, so please would you book with the office if you would like to join in this pre-Show social get-together. Awards Dinner The Awards Dinner will be held in the Vice Presidents marquee on Tuesday evening. DINNER MENU Starter - Sharing Plate Pressed ham hock & Wensleydale terrine; chicken liver parfait; rustic farmhouse pate; chargrilled asparagus; caramelised red onion & apple chutney; home-made piccalilli & dressed rocket with locally made breads with butter Roast Topside of South Devon beef with fondant potato, glazed carrots, fine green beans, and a red wine & horseradish jus Strawberries with cream and crushed meringue Coffee or Tea £20 + VAT (£24) per person, please book with SDHBS office 3

Young Handler Competition The Young Handler Competition kindly sponsored by Towergate Farm Insurance will be held at 9 am on Wednesday 22nd June, and will include the main class for members and members’ relations or employees aged 16 to 25 with first prize money of £400 towards an overseas trip to see South Devon breeding; and a junior class for 11 to 15 year olds. An entry form is included at the back of this newsletter. Interbreed classes day two On Wednesday morning there is the opportunity for exhibitors to take their cattle into the ‘any other breed’ classes in a more light-hearted interbreed show section. The prize money is an attractive incentive, as well as the opportunity to bring the cattle into the ring again. Best photograph competition There are two classes you can enter – on farm or at show. Please submit your entries to the SDHBS office in good time before we leave for Cheshire. Cake competition It’s nearly time to start baking for the show, and there will be two sections this year – best sponge and best fruit cake – and your entries need to be brought to the Society marquee by 10 am on Tuesday morning. Once judged by Mrs Jean Hadley, the cakes will then be ready to eat with your tea and coffee in the marquee. Tidy lines At the end of the show there will be an award for the best kept cattle lines, which will be announced in the marquee at lunchtime on the second day.

PERFORMANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016 LIVESTOCK EVENT, THE NEC, 6TH & 7TH JULY We are very grateful to this year’s sponsors of the Performance Championships – Kivells, Neogen, and Pickstocks – and we look forward to lots of entries for this technical show at the NEC. For visitors the Event is free entry, with the option to pre-register or register on arrival. www.livestockevent.co.uk – for more information. 4

YOUTH INCENTIVE AGRIBITION CANADA For many years Jim Barber, who some of you will know as the person who comes to scan your cattle for Breedplan, has been taking teams of young judges nominated by their respective Breed Societies to Agribition, Regina, Canada. For entries this year, the age range for eligibility is from 18 to 21 years on 25th November 2016. Council have recently decided to sponsor a young person to attend, and we are launching a competition to find the best application from a youth member, or son/daughter/grandson/granddaughter of a member giving their reasons why they think they should be the one to receive Society sponsorship of £1,000 towards being part of Jim Barber’s group this year. The show is held between 21st and 26th November. The approximate cost of sending a competitor is £1,400 which includes air fares, hotel and entry fees. Some meals are included in the trip, and all entries to the show. The competitor will need to buy other meals, etc. To quote from the Agribition website (www.agribition.com) “Canadian Western Agribition, located in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, is the best beef show on the continent and the largest livestock show in Canada. The show is anchored by beef cattle and features horses, bison, sheep, goats, and an extensive agribusiness trade show. Canadian Western Agribition is a blend of agriculture, First Nations, and festive entertainment, featuring live music, shopping, and food. The show hosts evening pro rodeo performances as well for action-packed entertainment! The event is an international hub of agriculture excellence, hosting over 800 international guests from over 70 countries. CWA is where the world meets.” To enter the competition candidates will need to submit a written ‘job application’ giving reasons for their suitability to represent the Society and the breed at Agribition; and their vision of the future of the breed both nationally and internationally. The competition will be judged by Council, and applications will close on Wednesday 31st August 2016. Good luck to all those who enter!

AND FINALLY ….

An Englishman, Irishman, Welshman, Scotsman

were captured while fighting in a far-off foreign land, and the leader of the captors said, 'We're going to line you up in front of a firing squad and shoot you all in turn. But first, you each can make a final wish.' The Englishman responds, 'I'd like to hear "God Save The Queen" just one more time to remind me of the auld country, played by the London All Boys Choir, with Morris Dancers Dancing to the tune.' The Irishman replies, 'I'd like to hear "Danny Boy" just one more time to remind me of the auld country, sung in the style of Daniel O'Donnell, with Riverdance dancers skipping gaily to the tune.' The Welshman answers, 'I'd like to hear "Men Of Harlech" just one more time to remind me of the country, sung as if by the Treorchy Male Voice Choir.' The Scotsman says quickly, 'I'd like to be shot first.’
