A report of the Midland Club Sale which saw further strong trade is inside, and is a clear reason for anyone who is not registering their South Devon cattle as pedigree why they should do so! The value of pedigree as opposed to commercial is too significant to ignore, especially with the ever-increasing risk of TB. Also inside is detail of The Next Generation Weekend, 30th August to 1st September. Please let us know if you are interested, or know of someone who might be interested in booking.

MIDLAND CLUB SALE

Judge: Mr M R Rowe, Tregondale, Menheniot, Liskeard, Cornwall Auctioneers: Messrs Kivells Another excellent sale for the breed took place at Stratford on 4th May, with a full market of cattle and plenty of buyers. New averages were set for the breed and for the venue, with bulls averaging £4,410 (up from £3,668 in 2011); and two year old heifers averaging £2,359 (up from £2,090 in 2012).

Top priced bull was Robert Lee’s Lumbylaw Magnus 55 (by Enterprise Condor), at 6,800 gns to Sunderlandwick Farms; top priced two year old heifer was J G Williams & Son’s Hopton Ruby 71, at 3,700 gns to P Holt, Harpenden; and top priced yearling heifer was Mike & Sarah Kettlewell’s Upper Norton Oleander, at 3,500 gns to A & C Farms.

The reduction sale of the Gro herd was also very successful, with plenty of demand from new buyers for good foundation females. Well done to members of the Midland Club for making the sale go so smoothly!

Three bulls were found to have white on the underside.

THE 4TH NATIONAL SHOW Devon County Show 16th-18th May Please refer to the enclosed pamphlet for the programme of events.

A few other things you should know if you are planning to come to the Show:  The cattle shed is closed to the public whilst any cattle are moving, but if you are wearing a wristband you can gain access. We have a supply of these wristbands, or you can collect one from the stewards’ office by the show rings  For catering purposes please let us know if you wish to come to the Cream Tea or the Barbecue  If you wish to come to the Dinner please book in advance with the office.

You will be issued with a ticket which you are requested to bring with you in order to get past the security at the door of the President’s Pavilion.  If you are coming to the Dinner and you are not staying on the showground please be advised to park in the Green Car Park which is the closest to the President’s Pavilion. The Green Gate will be open until 11 pm, but the parking area is not lit.  Please encourage entries for the Young Handler Competition – the closing date is Friday 10th May.  Advance tickets to the Show are available to purchase on-line at www.devoncountyshow.co.uk at £17 per adult, and ‘buy one get one free’ for senior citizens.

 Bring your cake and photograph competition entries to the SDHBS marquee by 11 am on Thursday morning at the Show, or send your photographs by post to the office. (Best Fruit Cake recipe is in the last newsletter).  Please send your poem or limerick to the office by Tuesday 14th May. We hope to see many of you at the Show to join in this showcase event for the breed!

NEXT GENERATION WEEKEND Another Next Generation Weekend is being organised at the end of August, this time in the Midlands, which will be based at Chesterton Fields Farm, Leamington Spa – by very kind arrangement of Robert, Pauline, John & Jean Hadley.

There will be two options for accommodation – either hotel (limited number of shared rooms available so first come, first served), or camping at the farm (you provide camping gear). The draft programme is as follows: Friday 30th August

POLLING AT OXEY FARM By kind invitation of Richard & Diana Wright “I am hoping we shall be able to give you a warm welcome to Oxey Farm on Tuesday July 16th, meeting at 1.30 pm, after having to cancel this meeting in 2012 because of the atrocious wet summer last year. We recorded 44 inches of rainfall between April 2012 and March 2013, normal rainfall being 25 inches!

We became interested in polling when we had an Angus bull for heifers, and did not have to dehorn any of their offspring. Having used a Red Angus as well as a Black Angus in the early 2000’s we retained some red Angus females and have upgraded their daughters with the thought that this will give a wider genepool.

At the present time we have four lines of polled bulls, coming from Knightcote Landmark 2, Polkinghorne Nimrod, Goffe Cave Bandwagon, and Oxey Red. We are still using horned bulls, with the hope that they will produce polled sons from our polled cows. There are a few old polled cows sired by Northwick General 7.

Most of our bulls are myostatin free, and the intention is to buy zero status ones in the future. So far we are achieving just over 50% polled, and the challenge is not to have to dehorn a calf!”

IMPORTANT REMINDERS DNA testing of bulls for sale As of this Autumn Show and Sale it will be an enforceable requirement that any bulls intended for a Society sale that do not have DNA typing for myostatin and sire verification at time of publication of the catalogue will be refused entry (excepting unavoidable delays at the lab).

Council are sympathetic to breeders wishing to delay pedigree registration until very close to 18 months of age; however, the ruling will be that applications for a bull’s pedigree registration must be made at least three months before the date of the sale, and a hair sample submitted to the office at the same time for DNA typing.

Sale catalogues by post Society and Midland Sale catalogues are posted on our website which are available to read and download. Until now all members are sent a paper copy of the catalogue – many of which are probably not required.

It has therefore been decided that, as of the Autumn Show & Sale, catalogues will be posted only to those members who request their names to be kept on a catalogue list. Please don’t delay – if you wish to continue to receive catalogues by post let us know immediately!

We also keep a list of non-members who purchase at sales or who request catalogues, who will continue to receive posted catalogues.

QUIZ QUESTIONS We are currently compiling a Quiz (for the Next Generation Weekend) which will have a cattle and agricultural theme. If you would like to suggest a question please would you let the office know, or leave it in the ‘QUIZ BOX’ which will be in the marquee at Devon County.

The questions can be related specifically to the breed, to the Society, or can be much more general – as you wish!

REGIONAL BVD SCHEME The AHDB and partners are leading a project working with vets and farmers to help devise a national BVD control strategy for England, but which unfortunately will not provide funding for testing or designing action plans!

However, if you are in the North West of England you might benefit from a specific pot of funding available to tackle BVD. The scheme includes up to ÂŁ450 towards testing costs, time with a veterinary surgeon and a technical adviser who will also create a BVD action plan tailored to each farm.

There are 200 spaces available, and you should contact the NFU North West regional office on 01695 554900, or e-mail laura.stearman@nfu.org.uk to register your interest.

AUSTRALIAN POLL SEMEN “The last straws of EU accredited semen from Torr Down Hermes 3 (polled) will be arriving in the UK early to mid-June.

Hermes 3 is a heterozygous poll with a myostatin score of ‘1’ nt821. He has been a very successful sire in the past, in both the UK and many other countries. His data can be found be searching on the internet for Torr Down South Devons.

BEEF EXPO, MALVERN 23RD MAY Beef Expo is being held at the Three Counties Showground again this year, on Thursday 23rd May (with farm tours and dinner the previous day). The Society will have a demonstration stand, so please come and support us if you can.

Events during the Expo include a number of seminars covering fertility in beef herds; question time with David Heath, Adam Quinney and John Cross; and forage & feeding.

There are also show classes, a meat area, machinery demonstrations, and a section for beef from the dairy herd. The Event is open from 8 until 5.

MULTI-BREED NATIVE SALE Northallerton, Yorkshire Northallerton Auctions have been encouraged by the recent increase in demand for native breed cattle to hold a show and sale of native bred cattle on 15th May. There will be sections for pedigree and non-pedigree stock, and the sale will run alongside their normal Wednesday store sale.
