Dear Member Some sad news to convey – Mr Wallace Williams who founded the Roskymer herd has recently died, and we offer our sincere sympathies to his family.

Roskymer breeding has had a significant influence on many South Devon bloodlines, and pedigree South Devons are now kept by Wallace’s grandson Martin.

On a happier note, congratulations to the Vrona family on the arrival of Jo and Dan’s first daughter, Florence Connie.

The Autumn Show & Sale was a great success, and thank you to all who brought cattle forward, and to our auctioneers Kivells. A new record price for a polled bull has been set at 10,200 guineas, and the trade for females was exceptionally strong. Details are inside for your information. Our thanks go to the Wessex Region who hosted such a genial pre-Sale Supper; to our team of stewards; to the Bristol Sale Centre staff; to our Sale Inspector Duncan 1

Findlay; and to our judge, Peter Rowe. I am sure you would all like to join in congratulating the winner of the Male Championship – Mr Oliver Brewin – with North View Bailey. It was an outstanding win, and we are all delighted for you!

The National Herd Competition was won by Paul & Pam Harrison – many congratulations to them, and thank you for such an enjoyable Open Day which managed to avoid the heavy rain during the Walk! The cattle looked most impressive, particularly the young stock, and we look forward to seeing those promising calves at future breeding sales!

Results from the Wessex Region, Midland Club, Truro Club, and South Devon Cattle Breeders Club herd competitions are inside. The new Region Four herd competition is being judged now, and details will be in the next newsletter.

There have been a number of Open Days around the country to see the winning herds – Burrow, Oxey, and Trewint so far – which have provided a wonderful opportunity to see some of the best South Devon cattle. The Tully Partnership also recently hosted an Open Day for Region Two, where the Waddeton herd was shown in all its autumn glory. Congratulations and thank you to all the hosts!

The first sale at Shrewsbury which was largely commercial, saw some 40 cattle forward – an excellent number giving plenty of choice to buyers. The Sale proved a good opportunity to promote the breed, and to recruit new members.

Well done to Region 6 for taking the initiative!

Skipton is the next Sale on the calendar, and a catalogue will be produced shortly. All cattle will be either from 4-yearly TB testing areas, or from herds in yearly testing areas where there have been no TB breakdowns. Let us know if you would like to receive a catalogue, or view it on line.

If you have any photographs you’d like to be considered for inclusion in the 2014 calendar please would you submit them electronically as soon as possible.

NATIONAL HERD COMPETITION Judges: Mr Colin Edwards and Mr Olliver Rounsevell 20 herds with 61 stock bulls, 1233 cows, 1989 young stock judged over 9 days The awards will be made at next year’s Annual General Meeting on 25th March at the Devon Hotel, Exeter. Our very grateful thanks go to the judges for giving up their time and carrying out such a difficult task! Most unfortunately Mr Robert Lee was forced to withdraw as the third judge after seeing only three herds, when his shepherd fell seriously ill back at home.

HERD COMPETITION WINNERS OPEN DAY By kind invitation of Paul & Pam Harrison Hunday Field Farm, Grafton, York, Yorkshire On a day when there was torrential rain in the south of England, moving north and eastwards, the planning had to work like clockwork to avoid a soaking – and it did! About 50 visitors arrived from across the country, including from Devon and Cornwall, and all agreed that it was well worth the trip.

Paul had gone to some trouble to avoid a stream of cars inevitably getting lost around the Yorkshire countryside as they tried to navigate toll bridges and diversions – by bringing all the cattle back to one holding. This meant we could walk around the groups – all showing typical South Devon docility and curiosity.

The Brafferton herd was looking at its best, with thick red coats against a background of lush green grass. Youngstock in particular had impressed the judges (highest points), and their dams were also holding a very good condition.

Heifer and bull calves alike were strong, blocky, long and wide, with good bone and structure. Brafferton Winston 1 was particularly striking in his group (third Best Bull), and his progeny show considerable potential.

At the end of the walk Pam and her team of helpers provided a most welcome tea with plenty of everything for everyone. It was much appreciated, as was the shelter from the now pouring rain! Thanks and congratulations were conveyed to the Harrisons by the Chairman and Secretary, before visitors departed to some of the furthest corners of the country.

NATIONAL SHOW 2014

The Great Yorkshire Show, 8th-10th July, Harrogate The Working Group for the 2014 National Show at the Great Yorkshire met a few weeks ago, and started to put the ‘flesh’ onto the ‘bones’ of the arrangements for next year’s main breed showcase. For some years the Society’s Council has recognised the northern region as having the best potential for breed promotion and expansion, and to have the National Show in its heartland is a fantastic opportunity for the breed to be seen and appreciated. The Great Yorkshire is very much an agricultural show, with farming visitors from a wide area.

EXHIBITOR DISCOUNTS As in previous years, the Society is financially encouraging its members to exhibit their cattle by providing a travel discount to help with the costs of bringing animals. For 2014 this will be shared out as follows: All exhibitors except those in region 7 (host region) will receive £10 per animal forward (not including calves), plus per animal forward: From Regions 1 & 2 £40 From Regions 3 & 4 £30 From Regions 5 & 6 £20 PRIZE MONEY Once again, the Society will increase the amount of prize money for the Show by £500 to be shared between the breed classes.

SHOW CLASSES - Heifer born between 1 January and 31 December 2013 - Heifer born between 1 January and 31 December 2012 - Heifer or cow born between 1 January and 31 December 2011, certified in calf or with calf at foot - Cow born on or before 31 December 2010, certified in calf, having had a full time calf in the previous 12 months, with or without calf at foot - Bull born on or before 31 December 2010 - Bull born in 2011 or 2012 - Bull born on or after 1 January 2013 17

- Group of any three animals bred by the exhibitor, entered in previous classes STALLING & MARQUEE South Devons will be stalled in their usual area, and 80-100 stalls will be allocated. If the stalls are over-subscribed, any maximum permitted per exhibitor will be administered by SDHBS. The Society’s marquee will be opposite the cattle sheds, ring-side.

SOCIAL EVENTS These will include a pre-show visit with barbecue to Green Hammerton, near York, on Monday evening, by very kind invitation of the Powley family. This South Devon-based herd is an excellent example of beef production, and beautifully demonstrates how South Devon characteristics are key to its success.

The Society’s Show Dinner will be held on the showground on Tuesday evening, when awards will be presented.

COMPETITIONS A number of competitions will be held, details of which will follow nearer the time, and will include Baking, Photographic, Best Dressed, and Tidy Lines. The Society’s Young Handler Competition will also be scheduled during the Show, so please start encouraging your youngsters now!

AGRI-EXPO CARLISLE Friday 1st November

The Society will have a breed stand at Agri-Expo, with three pens of crossbred commercial cattle to demonstrate both the maternal and terminal characteristics that the South Devon adds to beef production units.

The Expo is a very busy event – and is free to visitors – with suckled calf and primestock classes, as well as tradestands.

JOB OPPORTUNITY BRITISH CATTLE BREEDERS CLUB – SECRETARY Lesley Lewin (former SDHBS breed secretary) is planning to retire from her position as Club Secretary of the British Cattle Breeders Club in January 2015.

It is hoped that a replacement will be appointed by January 2014 so that the new appointee can be kept informed during the course of 2014 ready to begin their tenure in January 2015.

The new Secretary may already work in an agricultural organisation and take on the role as part of their existing position, or they may be a farmer or farmer’s partner and could be found amongst the membership of a breed society.

NEWS FROM ‘DOWN-UNDER’ South Devons won the prestigious Borthwick Trophy for the best team of three purebred steers for the first time in the Trophy’s 60 year history at the Royal Melbourne Show, Australia.

With ten breeds competing, they were placed second to the Limousin breed on the hoof – 84/100 – two points behind. However, when judged on the hook the three South Devon steers scored 91.62, 90.37, and 89.8 points out of 100.

This gave them a winning total Hoof & Hook score of 353.42 points, compared to the Limousin ‘Carcase Breed’ of 348.49, a reversal of 6.93 points.

The Grand Champion Carcase Accolade, with an entry of 216, was awarded to a South Devon steer for the second year running, again bred by Shaun & Sheree Hamson, Kirndeen South Devons, Culcairn, NSW, and prepared and shown by the now famous Billabong High School. With a score of 91.62/100 he also won the Export class & Schools Championship, gaining full marks for saleable meat yield, and 19/20 for market specification.

The steer, named ‘Tiny Teddy’ was a full brother to last year’s winner, ‘Prince Harry’, both sired by Torr Down Hallmark 10, with the dam being a Lincoln cow.

Tiny Teddy was only placed fourth in his class on the hoof, with the judge commenting as he left the judging area, that he could be the ‘surprise dark horse’!

AND FINALLY …

(thanks to Pat Rickett for this one) An elderly couple had been going to the local fair for years, and every year the old chap wanted to go on a helicopter ride. It cost £50, and every year his wife said, “Well, £50 is £50”, and he was not allowed.

Finally, one year he announced that as he was now 65 he was going to go on the ride. His wife started again – “£50 is £50 – a lot of money.” An argument ensued, overheard by the helicopter pilot who said, “If you both promise not to say a word whilst we are up in the air you can have a free ride. But if you say a word you will have to pay.”

At the end of the ride, as he prepared to land, the pilot turned and said, “There, I didn’t hear a word from you the whole trip.” The old chap replied, “Well, it was difficult. I was going to say something when Edie fell out, but then I remembered - £50 is £50!”
