The Massage Associates

Serving South OC since 2001

Photography by Diana Schmitt, Accent Portraits by Diana

There is a beautiful book on writing penned by Haruki Murakami called “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running.” From the title, you’d think it was a book on running.

And it is. But it is also a deep meditation on the act of getting a pure thought on paper, and the intersectional discipline it takes to be good at both: running, and writing. The truly standout feature of the book is its seamlessness. Learning and absorbing without noticing it happen. Michelle Bryant, owner of The Massage Associates in San Juan Capistrano, knows a thing or two about getting results without her clients seeing the process.

Born and raised in Southern California, Michelle got her degree in Biology from UC San Diego, and moved to Orange County when she got married. The Massage Associates has been in business since February of 2001, dedicated to providing best in class service, inviting new clients into the community, and helping people feel pain free.

At the outset, “there was me, and one other massage therapist,” says Michelle. “Then we added another, and another as our clientele expanded. We now have 6 massage therapists and specialize in deep tissue, therapeutic massage.” But like Murakami talking about writing when he is talking about running, what she means is that they offer massage as a vehicle to developing relationships with their clients that extend well beyond a typical therapist visit. They specialize in community pain management. “It’s the only way to help you feel better if your needs are known we can tailor our massage to fit.”

I would venture to say that the majority of businesses offering massage also offer a litany of spa

treatments: sauna, facials, skincare treatments, etc. But the beauty of Michelle’s service is that they only offer massage.

“We want to specialize in one form of treatment, and do it the best we can.” Need a deep tissue focus on your shoulders but some reflexology on your feet? No problem. Hot stone to relax, with a light stretch and some CBD cream for that recurrent sports injury? “We can do that. And we all work together to make sure that even if one time you can’t see your regular therapist, our other therapists can see the detailed notes on what you like or don’t like so that we can take great care of you.”

The relationships they have built help determine the offerings. It isn’t some cookie cutter massage. It’s dedicated, deep, and disciplined time spent on your health.

The experience is total: rich, and revelatory. Much like Murakami’s ode to the road he runs, and that which he writes, this 20th year for Michelle and her team bring constant challenges to be met, and yet also reminds us what we have been celebrating all along: the seamless triumph and trial. An end to pain and the work that gets us there.

COMING SOON: A FRESH NEW LOOK FOR LABOR & DELIVERY MATERNITY SUITES

When The Women’s Hospital opened at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center 35 years ago, a new approach to maternity care was introduced to Southern California. Our LaborDelivery-Recovery-Postpartum (LDRP) suites were a cutting-edge idea then and we continue to stay ahead of the curve today. The birthing suites offer patients the ability to labor, deliver and recover in the same spacious, private room designed for the momentous event.

The Women’s Hospital at Saddleback Medical Center is embarking on a complete renovation to refresh and upgrade its LDRP suites with patients and families in mind. They are designed with a holistic approach and calming décor offering special touches before, during and after labor to provide a nurturing environment for your birthing experience. The suites have a spa-like ambiance with soft, natural light and beautiful amenities. A special celebration brunch for you and your partner is also provided during your stay.

The renovations are estimated to be completed in summer 2023.

At The Women’s Hospital at Saddleback Medical Center patients are cared for by our specialty trained nurses, board certified OB/GYN physicians, perinatologists, anesthesiologists and OB hospitalists, who are available in house 24/7. International BoardCertified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) are available to assist new parents with breast feeding. Our advanced on-site Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is staffed around-the-clock by

board certified neonatologists, specialty nurses, and respiratory therapists who provide specialized care for infants born prematurely or with complications.

MemorialCare delivers over 11,000 babies each year. Approximately 10 percent are high-risk births that are referred to MemorialCare Medical Centers from throughout Los Angeles and Orange County. MemorialCare’s experienced staff, exceptional facilities and innovative programs all ensure a high quality of care.

The Women’s Hospital at Saddleback continues to care for families once they have left the hospital, including outpatient lactation consultant visits with certified nurse consultants and a postpartum support group facilitated by a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). Together with The Mommy Center in Laguna Hills, Mommy & Me Postpartum Classes are available at no cost to patients who deliver at The Women’s Hospital. This is funded by a generous grant from the MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center Foundation.

Visit memorialcare.org/sbbaby to learn more about The Women's Hospital, or memorialcare.org/sbbabyclasses for information about available classes.

Because Home is Where the Heart is

For the majority of seniors living in California, quality of life equates to living at home. A recent AARP survey reports that 77 percent of seniors want to remain in their home for the long term.

The advantages of aging in place are numerous. As we age we want to maintain the highest degree of independence possible. Our home is familiar and comforting to us, it’s where we feel safe.

Our homes are a safe-haven, a place where we can heal and stay healthy. Our home is filled with memories and it’s what we’ve created over the years with our loved-ones.

Often times in order to keep seniors living at home in comfort and safety, services and help are needed. Many seniors have opted for home care services when they need help and want to remain at home.

As the senior population increases, so has the home care industry. We spoke

to Kyle Warner, co-owner of Your Home Care Inc. about what they do and the benefits of home care services.

Question: Tell us a little bit about Your Home Care and what it is that you do.

Answer: At Your Home Care, our mission is to enrich the quality of life for seniors by providing compassionate caregiving services at home. The agency was created in 2003 and is family owned and operated.

Our agency is licensed, insured and bonded, all our amazing caregivers are vetted, trained and background checked. We service most areas of Orange County, CA with a concentration in Laguna Woods and the surrounding cities. And we also work seamlessly with all Long-Term Care Insurance plans.

Q: What is the biggest gift or or blessing that you see while providing care for seniors?

A: The culture we have created here at Your Home Care is that of kindness and compassion. The most important

12

thing we can offer families is that we honor the people we are entrusted to care for. It is indeed a blessing to see our services make a positive impact in people’s lives. It is humbling to know that we get to provide a vital service that enriches and prolongs people’s lives.

Q: How many hours does a typical home care client start with?

A: The hours vary based on the needs of the client. Some clients like to start with a four-hour, or a six-hour shift. Others know they will need more care than that and schedule full days. We try to be as accommodating as possible to meet the scheduling needs of our clients.

We work with many clients coming home from the hospital, or skilled nursing facility and they require 24 hour care as they rehab and regain their strength.

Another important aspect of scheduling is establishing consistency and dependability for the families we serve. We work hard to have the same caregivers work with our clients whenever possible in order to build rapport and strong relationships.

Q: Tell us about the staff at Your Home Care.

A: Employees and clients say they appreciate working with us because they get to deal directly with the owners. They like working with the decision makers because it tends to make things run more smoothly and the process is more streamlined. Owners Segal Ronen and Kyle Warner oversee everything from client acquisition, employee operations to office administration.

But the real magic behind what we do is the talented, experienced team of caregivers we have the pleasure of working alongside. Our team is filled with special people and it’s apparent they genuinely love what they do and have “a calling” for this work. They are service-minded, kind people, who love to care for seniors as though they are family.

Q: What types of services does home care typically cover?

A: We offer a wide range of non-medical home care services and customize a care plan for every client. These services include personal care related services such as bathing, dressing, bathroom assistance and other personal hygiene needs. We prepare meals, provide transportation and help with housekeeping duties. We help with mobility and fall prevention. We basically help with all the activities of normal daily living that seniors might need a hand with.

Companionship and social engagement is another key aspect of caregiving. Some of our seniors feel isolated and lonely, so a caregiver becomes a friend to talk to and their bond is lasting.

Seniors with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or Dementia can benefit greatly from a caregiver because they are experienced in working with people with cognitive impairments. They are trained on the techniques used to manage behavior, keeping them safe and well supervised.

Q: What makes Your home care stand out above the other home care agencies?

A: The senior home care industry is growing and changing. The trend we are seeing is an increase in rates, add-on fees and lengthy minimum hour requirements.

At Your Home Care we don’t have lengthy minimum hour requirements, nor do we up-charge. We make every effort to be as accommodating and flexible as possible to meet the needs of our clients. We are responsive and available to our clients and caregivers when they need us. We act quickly to address and resolve any issue or concern.

Going back to our mission…to provide compassionate home care services that enrich families’ lives… with this in mind we are always looking for ways we can exceed our clients’ expectations.

Your Home Care is a company with heart, we care about our clients, and we care about our employees. If you are considering home care for you or your loved one, you can call Kyle Warner directly at (949) 424-9322

and let us show you how much we care.

Think About it!

How valuable are your memories to you?

bic exercise may activate certain beneficial genes in the brain and benefits accumulate no matter what age we start.

Lastly, it is well known that we should take care of any medical problems, like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension; all of which are all known to damage brain health.

But if we’re already doing those, what else can be done?

Watch exposure to heavy metals and mold. Mold neurotoxicity causes memory deficits, difficulty concentrating, problems with language and reasoning, mental fatigue, depression, and anxiety.

Is it important to you that you remember when you first fell in love with your spouse? Do you think you could ever forget your children’s wedding?? What about the names of your grandchildren?

Is your immediate recall beginning to get fuzzy? Are you forgetting why you got up to go to the kitchen? Are you having problems finding the right word to describe what you are saying?

Our memory is what shapes our being, it decides our convictions and shapes us morally and ethically and thereby defines us as a person.

Our memory is something that we may take for granted until it begins to fail us.

What would you do to protect your memories?

I believe that we all know the basics for good brain health. It is what we already do in order to stay healthy. We all do our best to get enough sleep, engage our brain, exercise and to keep ourselves in generally good health.

We know it’s important to get enough sleep, and to get help for existing

sleep problems. There’s increasing evidence that sleep disorders can cause problems with mental functions—including memory. Two of the most common sleep zappers: obstructive sleep apnea and stress.

It’s also vital to stay socially engaged and to challenge our brain by learning new things. It’s even better to pursue interests that keep us connected with others. “It’s probably better for brain health to have a conversation with a friend over lunch than to memorize num bers in reverse, for instance.

To follow, we need to put “heartpumping” exercise into your daily routine. Studies show that aero -

One must also watch for inflammation. There are precise inflammatory markers specific to your brain that can be obtained, to find the exact source of inflammation, and thereby giving you the information and the tools, you need to nip memory loss in the bud. For example, one may find that they have a virus that has caused the loss of integrity of the blood brain barrier.

Autoimmunity also plays a large part in nervous system diseases that often go unrecognized. One may have food sensitivities that mimic specific proteins in the brain and then your body sees parts of your brain as enemy.

Autoimmunity occurs when a misguided immune response attacks the body’s own organs and tissues. Autoimmune disorders can target virtually any structure within the central or peripheral nervous system in a highly specific way, targeting a very specific cell population (e.g., myelin, the insulation of nerve cells). The cell type that is targeted in the central nervous system (CNS) structures dictates the symptoms one may have.

14
Sunao Gilbert,

We are told that medications like Namenda and Aricept help protect against memory loss. However, those medications are only prescribed once the damage has been done. Additionally, studies now show that they do not protect and in fact, cause more harm than good.

Instead, there is a natural option that prevents, treats, and protects memory loss. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, more popularly known as NAD+ is a potent and vitally important organic coenzyme that is used throughout the body in multiple functions. In regard to brain health, it helps your brain function at an optimal level by repairing brain cells, protecting them from damage, and increasing their activity and energy production.

Studies show that NAD+ depletion is observed not only during normal aging, but also in accelerated aging. Top researchers at Johns Hopkins found that increasing NAD+ can restore learning, memory, and cognitive functions by boosting the cell’s ability to make energy and protecting DNA repair mechanisms. In fact, NAD+ increased new brain-cell formation crucial to learning and memory, while reducing inflammatory changes that accompany (and probably contribute to) Alzheimer’s disease.

They also found that mice treated with NAD+ performed better on a battery of cognitive tests and showed markedly reduced levels of brain celldestroying pTau proteins (found to be the main cause of Alzheimer’s Dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases).

So, think about it…

Please see me for a consultation regarding what can be done for a healthy brain and strong memory.

EXCEPTIONAL CARE WITH MOBILE OUTPATIENT PHYSICAL THERAPY

Mobile Therapy Specialists Inc. (MTS) was founded by two physical therapists with over 45 years of combined service in Orange County. Lee Perkins PT and Patrick Klick PT recognized a need to provide convenient, high quality physical therapy directly to patients in their homes. “People often confuse our business with traditional home health care since we treat at the patient’s home, but MTS functions more like an outpatient physical therapy clinic. More of a clinic on wheels,” Lee states.

Lee remarks therapists in the typical physical therapy clinic are treating 3-5 patients per hour. With MTS, patients are receiving one-on-one treatment for the entire hour directly with their therapist. “What we

have found from this delivery of care is a higher job satisfaction for our therapists, exceptional patient treatment experiences and better overall outcomes,” Patrick states.

The quality MTS provides has been recognized in the community through partnerships with HOAG At Home, Vivante Assisted Living Facilities, and the Merage JCC. MTS has 16 therapists covering all of Coastal Orange County and South Orange County. Every therapist is carefully selected for exceptional skills and high-quality customer service and goes through a background check and training directly with company leadership. Mobile Therapy Specialists is truly physical therapy at its best!

VIP Concierge Phlebotomy, Laboratory Directly To Your Door

Patience, kindness and true patient-centric healthcare from the comfort and convenience of Home? OC Labs delivers it all!

Orange County Labs, Inc. has been reinventing personalized patient care since 2014.

Recruited by LabCorp straight out of college in 1990, CEO, Bryan Muhlenbruch received extensive training and management experience at one of the nations largest medical laboratories, however he never wanted his patients at a draw station to feel like they were at a cattle call or just a number in-line.

After nearly twenty-four years of successful marketing management and oversight of four small regional labs, and transitioning them to LabCorp acquisitions, Bryan decided to go into business for himself. His goals, are to build on true patient-centered care and customizing the doctor’s individual or specific needs. Orange County Labs has proven to be your single source for all medical laboratory testing and home collections, located in Huntington Beach, CA, they come directly to your front door for your convenience.

“We are a full-service, high-complexity medical laboratory, specializing in custom and self-ordered blood draws,” says Bryan. “We of-

fer VIP Concierge in-home and at-business phlebotomy services, coming to you with our professionally trained staff to safely draw your blood or collect other sample types. Our test results come directly to your physician usually in 24 hours or less.”

OC Labs accepts all laboratory orders from any licensed healthcare provider. All orders are billed to PPO insurances directly, including Medicare, Medi-CAL, Cal Optima, Tricare and Humana Military. The collection and transportation fees are a covered benefit for the insured, so it’s at no cost to the patient. “Why wouldn’t you want in-home services, and be complete in only 10-15 minutes?”

Voted the #1 Medical Laboratory in Orange County, Orange County Labs performs a full range of blood, saliva, genetic, tissue, molecular and urine tests throughout Orange County. From early diagnosis to best treatment options, physicians count on Orange County Labs for fast, reliable and accurate results at a lower cost.

“We customize our approach to meet the needs of the people we serve,” says Bryan. “It just feels great to serve any patient who has been forced to adapt to a one-sizefits-all approach from the big national labs, ultimately saving time and hassle for the patient.”

As patients, we still have a choice of who we give our business to, including labs! Truly, Bryan says, “if you are dissatisfied with how things are being done when facing a blood draw for your physician, try our approach

of VIP Concierge Phlebotomy Services in the comfort of your home or office. I wish I could tell you just how much satisfaction and love our Phlebotomists get back from every one of our patients, who do not have to leave the comfort of their own homes.” “Building long-term relationships with our patients over the years, is what we enjoy the most!”

It’s heartbreaking, thinking about the challenges which face our aging population, or those with disabilities. Planning a trip to the lab, scheduling a ride, managing the essentials like medications, oxygen, walkers, Etc. just to get their blood drawn. We strive to eliminate this inconvenience for everyone. Orange County Labs also caters to our U.S. Military and First Responders to meet any special request.

With over 30 years in business under Bryan’s belt, Orange County Labs dedicated approach to conciergelevel healthcare is what keeps patients coming back time and time again. The teams of talented lab personnel and phlebotomists provide exceptional service and quality like no other. Orange County Labs is truly “Your Personal Medical Laboratory.”

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

FLEMING DERMATOLOGY & AESTHETIC CENTER 23141 Moulton Parkway, Suite 110, Laguna Hills | (949) 916-5956
Dermatology
22
Kristy Fleming, MD, Double Board-Certified in
and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Performance & Professionalism: Dr. Slide-Door

It’s a new year. I, along with everyone I know, made resolutions: mostly hoping that this year would be better than the last, but some that genuinely reflected an optimistic mindset. Said mindset led my husband and I to craft one that hadn't topped our previous lists: fix broken things.

Like most everyone we know, our family has spent considerably more time at home these past months - and knocking around the house all day, we've made a priority

of a dizzying array of home improvement projects - both indoors and out - that we'd previously deferred. Turns out, we're not alone.

A common refrain among our friend group? Countless home appliances to be replaced. Garden and landscaping projects to embark on. And a rather surprising number of sliding glass doors in need of repair in our collective Southern California homes.

Enter Shy Hadan. Known as Dr. SlideDoor, Shy's father was in the business of selling sliding doors, but when he saw that there was no one to fix them,

he stepped in with a solution. “Usually people think they just have to be replaced, but that isn’t the case! We have a ton of experience with all kinds of doors, no matter how old, what material, or what brand.”

If hauling open your sliding door requires Herculean strength, it’s likely you’re experiencing rollers with dirt and dust buildup so they don’t roll the way they used to. Over the years, it’s common for the rollers to wear to the point that you may actually be dragging the entire weight of the sliding door across the track, which causes even more damage and drag every time you do it.

Whether your door is modern or ancient, made of aluminum, vinyl or wood … all you have to do to “remedy your rolling troubles” is schedule a free inspection. A tech will come out to see if the components can be fixed or replaced, and then...fix it. With over 25 years of industry experience, Dr. Slide-Door is the number one chosen sliding glass door repair service in Southern California. What sets them apart? Each member of Dr. Slide Door’s team arrives with everything you’ll need on site.

“Your sliding door professional will replace the parts right down to the rollers, leaving your door feeling weightless and good as new. You’ll be amazed at how easily your door slides open and closed.”

With parts made in Germany, you can be assured that your “new” door could last another 20 years: plenty of time to tackle out the rest of your resolutions.

There is a specific type of business person I particularly appreciate when utilizing his or her services. One who is detail oriented.

yan “Bubbles” Jara is just such a professional. Having been in mobile auto detail business serving Orange County for over 25 years, he must be, and especially since his specialty is restoration and paint correction on classic cars. Bubbles was the plan since the beginning, it seems.

“My uncles restore classic vehicles so I grew up in the industry," he says. "It only made sense to one day have a business of my own bringing cars back to their original glory.”

But what happens before a car becomes a classic? Those of us that pride ourselves on being detail oriented would perhaps note that a regular car wash and wax are in order. Ryan takes it one step further.

you, and handles all of the heavy lifting - from upholstery cleaning to paint protection.

Jara's services include hand wash and wax, interior and exterior detailing, headlight restoration, steam cleaning, ceramic coating, engine bay wash and ... something my minivan could certainly use ... pet hair removal. You name the vehicle, Bubbles will ensure it is looking its finest.

Dental Implant Procedures

A Q & A with Dr. Hossein (“Dr. J”) Jahangiri

Southern California Family Dentistry

Oral health is more than just a pretty smile, and comprehensive care encompassing different practice areas can be challenging to find under one roof - a hallmark that distinguishes Southern California Family Dentistry (SCFD).

With almost 30 years of experience in dentistry, Dr. Hossein Jahangiri (“Dr. J”, as his patients know him) and his team of highly skilled dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants pride themselves on taking a patient-centered approach to providing exceptional general, cosmetic and restorative dental care for patients of all ages.

A member of the American Dental Association (ADA) and an associate fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), Dr. J holds a doctorate from the University of Southern California (USC) and completed his implant surgical residency at the Medical College of Georgia. He took over an existing dental practice in 2006 that has now been serving the local community for over

50 years and is among only 5% of all dentists to carry the license needed to provide IV conscious sedation with his own laboratory on site to ensure 100% control over case outcomes.

In this issue, Dr. J addresses common questions and concerns regarding “teeth in a day procedures” and dental implants.

South County Magazine: Is the implant restoration and surgery performed in the same office or by the same dentist?

Dr. J: In my opinion, the best scenario is for the dentist who will be making the teeth to decide where the implant will be placed so that a single person is accountable for the entire procedure from start to finish. This is what we do here at SCFD - the same dentist who places the implant(s) is also in charge of restoring the implant.

SCM: How do I know if I am a good candidate?

Dr. J: The only way to determine if you are a candidate for these types of procedures is to have a dental consultation with the proper diagnostic work up, including x-rays.

SCM: What is wrong with Dentures?

Dr. J: Because they rest on top of the gums, removable dentures do not feel like real teeth. The majority of people who wear dentures must restrict their food intake. According to studies, complete dentures are only 20% as effective as natural teeth. With dental implants, biting is significantly more effective, in this manner diminishing the potential for gastrointestinal issues.

SCM: Do you have a cone beam (CT scan) in the office? And is it necessary to have a CT scan prior to an implant being placed?

Dr. J: We do have a cone beam digital 3-D dental unit in our office, which is considered the “standard of care” for dental implant placement. I’ve found that dentists who install many

ASK the EXPERT
32

implants and are committed to doing them well invest in this costly technology for their practice.

SCM: What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dr. J: Missing teeth can directly and indirectly contribute to many health problems. Patients with many missing teeth or no teeth, show poor dietary habits and nutritional intake, increased risk of hypertension, coronary artery diseases and osteoporosis. There’s also the obvious esthetic benefit of not being without teeth. However, having a healthy mouth and a full set of teeth is the greatest benefit that implants offer.

SCM: What kinds of challenges have you faced in performing dental implant procedures?

Dr. J: Any experienced surgeon has had some procedures that turn out poorly. Long haul studies show a 96% achievement over the course of 10 years. In spite of that incredible success rate, even in the best of circumstances, that means that four out of every 100 patients will not have the desired results. I would suggest that a trustworthy and skilled surgeon will be happy to discuss potential issues, risks and benefits.

SCM: How long have you been placing dental implants?

Dr. J: I have been placing dental implants since 1998 for over 20 years. Every dental professional starts somewhere, but experience is important. Because implant surgery is extremely technique-sensitive, an inexperienced surgeon may not fully comprehend certain aspects until he or she gains the necessary skills that comes with time and repeated practice.

SCM: Having said that, how many dental implants do you place in a given month?

Dr. J: Some providers only place three to five implants in a year. In my

practice, we perform 20 to 30 dental implants procedures each month.

SCM: How long does it take for dental implants to heal?

Dr. J: The healing process typically takes about three to six months and primarily depends on the individual patient’s health and the quality of the bone that the implant is placed in.

SCM: Which brand(s) of implants do you use and where are they made?

Dr. J: There are several high-quality implant manufacturers. However, there are also several knockoffs at lower prices that use materials of lower quality and lack quality control. I’d recommend asking your dentist for the exact brand he/she will use. Our offices use only FDA-approved material, which are mostly made in the US.

SCM: How long do dental implants last?

Dr. J: This is one of the most asked questions at the time of implant consultations. And my answer is always the same: It can last as long as natural teeth. What we do in implant dentistry is replace hopeless teeth, so if you take care of your implants the same way as your original teeth (that you lost), the results cannot be expected to be any better. However, if implants are taken care of properly, they can last as long as (if not longer than) teeth.

Whether you need a routine cleaning or a more complex procedure such as dental implants, you can trust that you are in the best of hands at Southern California Family Dentistry.

Fashion Valley

Celebrating SoCal’s Coastal Chic Lifestyle at San Diego’s Premier Luxury Shopping Destination

It’s officially my favorite season in sunny Southern California: Lighter Later Season. Sure, I made that up, but it isn’t untrue. And the best way to spend longer days that are lighter later are on day trips to San Diego. Just an hour south of my home in San Juan Capistrano, San Diego has long been one of my personal favorite staycation and day trip destinations - renowned for its dining, beaches, luxury hotels, year-round sunshine and destination shopping.

A modern, multi-million dollar resort-style makeover is currently underway which will include enhancements that draw inspiration from the coastal city’s relaxed lifestyle and stunning aesthetic (think open, inviting public spaces, enriched landscaping, tranquil outdoor lounges). But the real stars of the show here are the extensive luxury offerings with 200+ stores to satisfy every level of shopping aficionado.

Pizza Kitchen, The Cheesecake Factory and P.F. Changs China Bistro to modern Mexican (Blanco Tacos + Tequila), handcrafted Italian (NoRTH Italia) and signature sushi and tapasstyle Japanese (So Sushi).

On my list for the latter? Fashion Valley is literally the cherry on top, offering the latest styles and on-trend shopping, featuring everything from simple staples to haute couture silhouettes - perfect for a girl’s day out before indulging at one of the delectable dining destinations, a little retail therapy for a cadre of mom friends or mothers and daughters anticipating those long summer beach days. Iconic designers meet insane deals: accessories for everyday to photo-worthy special event ensembles. It’s all at Fashion Valley.

One of my faves is Bloomingdales where it couldn’t be easier to cross items off the list for special occasions in one stop. Cologne for my husband’s birthday? Check. A dress for my daughter’s middle school graduation? Housewarming gift for a friend? A little treat of a lovely scented candle from Jo Malone for myself? Check. Check. Check.

Destination dining? Fashion Valley offers something for every palate from familiar favorites like California

Whether you lean toward upscale eateries or casual establishments, popular picks for the younger set like my teenage daughter (Abercrombie, American Eagle, Dr. Marten’s) or a luxury shopping experience, Fashion Valley has it all. For my part, I love perusing the latest luxe designer collections (including Burberry, Dior, Versace, Gucci, Prada, Tory Burch, Bottega Veneta, Emporio Armani and more). Showcase pieces that are timeless to trendy. Iconic and classic. Modern luxury redefined.

Ask a SOMM

Q Should I pay attention to wine ratings? What do they mean?

A At the end of the day all wine ratings really are are opinions and scores from people who drink and know a lot about wine.

So if you need some help picking out a wine from a region you know nothing about, then sure, take a look at an online magazine and see what some of the ratings say. Generally, 88-90 points and higher mean the wine is going to be good. But once you get to the high 90’s you’re likely going to be paying a lot more for them, mainly because they have the high rating.

But I can let you in on a little secret, many amazing producers out there don’t even get their wines rated! The best way to find these is to look for wines with high ratings, remember the areas they come from, and then look for other producers in the same areas. You can often find killer wines for a fraction of the price when doing it this way. Another secret… this is exactly the way Somm’s Stash wines are made

Q How long do wines stay good after opening?

A This is an easy one, but still important. In general, wines will still be good for a day or two after you open them, but will start to degrade a bit from the moment you open them. Usually by day three you’ll notice the wines aren’t as good as they were when first opened, and by days four and beyond the wines just don’t taste right.

A little hint to get an extra day or two out of opened red wine is to seal the bottle with a cork or rubber stopper and store the half empty bottle in the fridge! The low temp in the fridge helps slow the degradation process. Just let the wine slowly warm up in a glass when you want one, cupping your hands around the glass will speed this up a bit.

Q What are sulfites and are they bad?

A We’ve all heard it… “Do you have any wines without sulfites? They give me headaches.” This is when the som-

melier mentally puts his or her palm to their face.

In the recent social-media-driven years, the word “sulfites” has become the new bad word in wine. But why? When did we become so focused on this one component in wine, treating it like a poison? It’s mentioned with an almost villainous undertone now, like some evil wizard is adding it to wine when no one is looking.

In reality, sulfites have been a known part of wine making for a thousand years. They are harmless to almost everyone and occur naturally in all wines. Yes… I said naturally in all wines. Sulfites occur as part of the fermentation process, a natural byproduct of yeast metabolism during the conversion of sugar to alcohol. They are completely harmless to over 99% of all people.

In fact, the human body produces sulfites, a whole bunch of it, there’s already about 10 times more sulfites in you on a daily basis than a bottle of wine.

The thought of sulfites being a synthetic chemical added to wine is just a misguided fear. Winemakers might add additional small quantities near the end of fermentation to halt the process, but that’s the natural way to do it, like turning on the lights at the end of a dance party.

It’s also added during bottling as an antioxidant to help prevent spoilage. But, they only use what is needed to complete those stages, usually using amounts far within acceptable boundaries.

Sulfites do two things really well: they bond with oxygen molecules, keeping the wine from oxidizing into vinegar, and they push bacteria out of the wine to keep it from spoiling. Sulfites are like bouncers at the door of a bar, keeping the bad people out without ruining the party.

Bahia Resort Hotel San Diego’s Premier Beachfront Destination for Family-Friendly Fun

When folks picture Southern California, they might bring up a mental image of Disneyland, or perhaps the golden coastline and its accompanying aqua waters. But I can guarantee at some point in their imaginings, they’re thinking about sunny San Diego.

Nearly perfect weather all year round, miles of sandy beaches, lush tropical gardens, and the spectacular Mission Bay which plays host to an incredible number of recreational activities on and off the water.

Tucked away on a private fourteen-acre peninsula on the west shore of Mission Bay, the Bahia Resort Hotel is the ideal home base from which to explore the environs - whether you are looking for a relaxing retreat lounging poolside with frosty libations or a more active adventure defined by biking, kayaking or motorized boating.

Recently renovated rooms and suites are amenity rich and literally steps away from the water’s edge

with views of the marina, white sand beach or the property’s lush private gardens and grounds.

For our part, our family of four opted for one of the newly updated Marina Suites (each with a private patio or balcony) overlooking the beautiful dockside boats on Mission Bay. The resort’s suites offer more space to spread out with a separate bedroom and living area and included a kitchen with stove, oven and compact refrigerator for a convenient, casual opportunity to refuel between activities during the day.

DESTINATION DINING

The Bahia’s new upscale restaurant, Dockside 1953 is certain to make waves (pun intended) on the city’s coastal dining scene with its picturesque waterfront setting, nautical-inspired design and eclectic menu of mouthwatering dishes by new Executive Chef Bryan Stuppy.

Chef’s culinary offerings feature “a strong focus on sustainable seafood from local fishmongers and the highest quality produce from local growers and producers.” Seafood aficionados like me will have their work cut out for them in deciding between the literal bounty of “raw” standouts like locally caught Rockfish ceviche, Ahi Tuna tostada or Chef’s crudo. Can’t choose? The Seafood Tower offers an impressive sampling of oysters on the half shell, shrimp, ceviche and seared tuna.

I’m personally a fan of making a meal of several appetizers and the menu here provided a delicious opportunity to share an array of delicious dishesfrom the melt-in-your-mouth seared Day Boat Scallops and fragrant Bistro Steam Mussels to the pasture fed Wagyu and Lamb Meatball with whipped Valibreso and Calabrian Chili tomato sauce.

The warm, welcoming ambiance takes inspiration from its scenic waters edge locale with a light, airy casual-Californian beachside design (table tops and menu boards that resemble boat decking, brass signage, nautical light fixtures, furnishings done up in seafoam blue and sand). Several paintings of classic motor yachts and notable San Diego icons including the

Star of India, Point Loma Lighthouse and the Giant Dipper rollercoaster adorn the walls. A handcrafted scale model of a vintage speedboat serves as an eye-catching centerpiece of the restaurant. But the restaurant’s spacious outdoor patio with cozy firepits and unobstructed views of the bay are its piece de resistance.

OUTDOOR ENDEAVORS

As we discovered on our family’s previous staycations here at Bahia, there is no shortage of outdoor activity. Much to the delight of our teenage kids, options include tennis, taking a dip in the Junior Olympic swimming pool, stand up paddleboarding, afternoon bike rides, boat rentals for a scenic spin around the bay or lounging in a cabana with a good book on the secluded beach.

als. For those with a need for speed, guests can rent a Hurricane or Rinker powerboat. We spent an exhilarating hour with a spin around the bay aboard a 20’ Hurricane Deckboat - a fast, fun craft that’s also a super comfortable ride for up to 10 passengers. While boaters stay within the bay, our experience alternated between a leisurely cruise in the channels and a wind-through-your hair ride at speeds topping 40 mph.

Experience the best of beach living with direct access to the sand or choose a balcony view of the tidal teal just steps away. Take advantage of onsite gourmet dining, or the plethora of outdoor activity. Newly renovated, there isn’t a better spot in San Diego to stop and relax, all year round.

Endeavoring to meet the needs of all aquatic enthusiasts, Action Sport Rentals (actionsportrentals.com) is located right on property. Rent a single or tandem kayak, stand up paddleboard, pedal board rental or body board rental. Prefer a leisurely watercraft, Action Sport Rentals offers sailboats, fishing boats or pontoon rent-

I’m sure you’ve seen them - those license plate frames that say “I’d rather be”, usually followed by something fun and outdoorsy like snowboarding, surfing, even walking the dog. I can list about 47 things I’d rather be doing than taking on another home improvement project.

I'm aware that the flooring in certain rooms in our home are in need of a refresh, but the process of selecting the right materials, colors, etc. just seemed too daunting a task to tackle.

That was, however, before I set foot in the 11,000 square-foot showroom of Beach Builders Supply in Laguna Hills. Located within the expansive space is California Flooring Supply - quite literally a one-stop shop for world-class, high-end styles from

manufacturers who are some of the best names in the business.

With over 50 years combined experience, Gary Vuozzo and the team of professionals here specialize in only the highest quality carpet, luxury vinyl and hardwood for your home.

Giving contractors, architects, and homeowners like myself the exact atmosphere and expert advice to compare and purchase the very latest in styles and technologies is what sets this company apart.

Gary, a third-generation flooring specialist, has been in the business since he was 12 years old, “working in Grandpa’s stores in New York.” His father championed the industry as well, and he’s proud of the legacy he continues to offer to this day: custom offerings and dynamic customer service.

“It feels good to take care of customers, and take satisfaction from a job well done," says Gary. "We are local to South OC so feel free to drop on by. Come meet our team, check out our stock or just come pet our mini mascot Buddy the pug."

Dr. Ivan Ho, DDS - Pro Smiles OC Committed to Exceptional Care

All throughout my youth, I wondered why people didn’t like going to the dentist. That all changed when I moved away from home to go to college, and had to find a new dentist for the first time. That experience opened my eyes to how intimate dentistry is and how vulnerable you feel if you are not comfortable in the dental office.

to see wonderful providers and I was extremely grateful for the care they gave me. The experience of rectifying my own oral health led me to pursue dentistry. I wanted to give back to a profession that changed my life.”

In 1992, Dr. Ho started his practice in Laguna Hills and added a second office in Rancho Santa Margarita and with great dedication and hard work, cared for residents of both cities.

Your smile/mouth is the first thing people notice when they speak to you. Finding someone you trust to take care of your dental hygiene is imperative to enjoying the confidence a beautiful smile gives you. Ivan Ho, DDS is one of those select few dentists you can trust. From the moment you meet him, you are immediately touched by his warm nature and empathy.

Dr. Ho has been caring for patients for over twenty years and has won numerous awards and reviews that focus not only on his excellency within dentistry, but also the warmth with which he treats his patients - as welcome guests and friends.

As a University of Southern California School of Dentistry graduate and an award winning board certified dentist, Dr. Ho lectures nationally and internationally about both cosmetic and implant dentistry. His expertise and warm demeanor have earned him the respect and trust of both colleagues and patients.

“As a doctor myself, extensive knowledge and expertise is important,”

says Patient Steve H., MD. “Dr Ho is truly an expert!”

Angela P., a local school teacher, echoes the sentiment and adds: “I’ve been searching for a dentist with honesty and compassion, I found Dr Ho through a co-worker and refer all my friends and family to him.”

Dr. Ho has had more than his fair share of time in the dental chair as a patient. This has given him the unique perspective of both a professional and a patient.

“I had extra teeth and gum issues that required multiple gum and oral surgeries from my childhood all through my adolescence,” says Dr. Ho. “Despite the many and varied procedures I went through, I was fortunate enough

“As my children started to grow up, I realized that I wanted to spend more time with them while I could,” he says. “So I sold my Laguna Hills location and focused on RSM, which is where I lived. I recently relocated back to Laguna Hills as now my children have grown.”

Dr. Ho has been enjoying his return to Laguna Hills and being able to care for patients that got him started twenty-plus years ago.

“It is not just fillings, crowns, implants, cosmetic dentistry or cleanings: it’s ‘beyond the nuances’ dentistry. Your oral health plays a very important role in your overall health and your ability to enjoy the simple pleasures of life like eating good food.

“After all, your smile is an indication of what is within.” Dr. Ho says with an engaging smile of his own.

Learning the ABC’s at Laguna Fencing Center

Close your eyes, and then have a friend/partner/child take one of your hands and position it away from your body in the air. Then, with your eyes still closed, take your other thumb and forefinger and touch the placed thumb. Can you do it? If so, you’re properly articulated in space. Or, more properly: your proprioception is in working condition. Proprioception, or kinesthesia, is your body’s way of telling you where you are in your environment. And it also happens to be one of the main skills of children and adults who fence. That’s right: like, with swords. Or rather foils, sabres, and epees.

Fencing and proprioception have similar building blocks. Agility, balance, and coordination. ABC. And at Laguna Fencing Center in Orange County, Olympic coaches lead classes and private lessons that delve into the mechanics of each. There are programs for all skill levels from beginners to advanced/elite, enthusiasts ranging from youth to adults, with rolling admission so new students can join at any time.

My 14-year-old son, a freshman in high school, just started a few weeks ago, after begging to sign up for the free fencing practice lesson offered to anyone interested. Perhaps it was the recent excitement of the Tokyo Olympics, where Lee Kiefer won the United States’ first gold medal in individual foil. Maybe he just remembered playing with swords as a kid. Or more likely it's that two of his best buddies have been longtime students at Laguna Fencing Center and truly excel at the sport - something our son thinks is infinitely cool and aspires to achieve. But no matter what the reason, we're thrilled because we have already seen his self-confidence skyrocket.

It’s a workout, to be sure. Somewhere between a HIIT class and ballroom dancing. Keeping his body aligned in space while also anticipating his opponent’s attack and being strategically ready to mount an instantaneous counter-attack is enough to make me sweat while watching.

Laguna Fencing Center has trained some of the best fencers in the country, and it’s evident why once you step foot into the state-of-the-art facilities. It doesn’t hurt my son’s case to find out that the NCAA heavily recruits fencers, and that individual athletes are ten times more likely to “play” than in any other mainstream college sport.

Now, take both hands, and curl them into fists. Raise both thumbs to the sky. That’s right- now you’re articulated in space the same way I am after each session at Laguna Fencing Center: with two thumbs up.

BACK TO OUR ROOTS

On June 10, 2023, the communities of Tstreet Volleyball Club and Fairmont Schools will come together on the Fairmont San Juan Capistrano campus to celebrate the opening of the new state of the art sand volleyball courts. Tstreet’s humble beginnings started in the sand back in 2005 when owner and two-time Olympic gold medalist Troy Tanner wanted something special for his then 11-year-old daughter Bailey Tanner. “There was a lack of teaching and mentoring youth athletes in

club volleyball that I knew I wanted for her,” Troy Tanner said. “A lot of families in the area had similar goals for their daughters. Word spread, and Tstreet grew rapidly.”

In addition to a successful pro career both indoor and on the FIVB and AVP tours, Tanner had an incredible run with Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings in 2008, coaching the dynamic duo to an unprecedented 76-1 international record, culminating in Olympic Gold in Beijing. Tanner stated back in the early years of Tstreet, “The sand could be a volleyball player’s best friend. Sand volleyball improves agility, strength, and stamina, which translates directly to indoor play. I knew that when I started a club, I’d want to incorporate sand training.”

Now, alongside Fairmont Schools, Tstreet is getting back to those roots.

On June 10th, Troy

Tanner and Misty May Treanor will reunite on the sand court to share their passion and knowledge of the sport and give back to the up-and-coming generation of beach players.

Troy has surrounded himself with talented, hard-working, good people, and together we have created a volleyball club with a reputation for integrity, organization, consistency and of course, great volleyball. To be back in the sand on Fairmont’s campus is the culmination of years of hard work and brings Tstreet back to its passion to grow the sport both indoor and outdoor. We cannot wait to embark on this journey in the sand!

Tstreet’s Summer Sand program begins June 19th – we hope you can join us!

Renew Ketamine Infusion Therapy

The first time I heard of Ketamine was a few years ago from a friend in nursing school. Then again recently from another friend whose mother suffers from fibromyalgia as she began researching therapies to relieve chronic pain. A growing number of studies have found that Ketamine can be effective for people with a myriad of chronic pain and mental health conditions, including treatment-resistant depression, anxiety and PTSD.

Based in San Juan Capistrano, Renew Ketamine Infusion is the brainchild of Tanya Dall, MD and Justin Yanuck, MD – board certified physicians who became colleagues and friends in their emergency medicine residency training at UCI Medical Center. Both have extensive experience utilizing Ketamine for various medical indications and treating complex pain disorders. Dr. Dall studied physiology at the University of Arizona, and went on to obtain her medical degree from Georgetown University. Dr. Yanuck received his medical degree from UCI and then completed a Pain Medicine Fellowship at Harvard Mass General Hospital.

Ketamine was originally FDA approved in 1970 as a safe way to anesthetize patients. However, as is common in medicine, often one medicine can have multiple uses and over the last 20 years research has been building showing Ket-

amine’s safety and efficacy for a range of psychological disorders. Dr. Yanuck and Dr. Dall use Ketamine nearly every day in the emergency room for things like procedural sedation, and treatment of acute pain. A few years ago, they had a conversation about how frustrated they were with the current framework for how most mental health and chronic pain conditions were treated, and that for many patients, they not only get little to no relief from these traditional medications, but often suffer undesirable side-effects. That night, some new articles on the efficacy of Ketamine came up in conversation, and the rest is history. Renew Ketamine Infusion was founded shortly thereafter.

The basis of Renew is to treat each patient as a unique individual, and to take a holistic approach to the entire Ketamine experience. “We don’t believe in a model where everyone receives the exact same dose, or the same dose at each infusion. Everyone responds differently and we treat you like the unique person you are,” says Dr. Dall. The infusions don’t happen in a vacuum: each session has a specially-trained MD (Dr. Dall or Dr. Yanuck) to oversee it, which allows for in-the-moment adjustments as needed, and is preceded and followed by integrative psychotherapy consultations with a licensed clinical psychotherapist specially trained in Ketamine assisted psychotherapy. Furthermore, each infusion takes place at their clinic which places an emphasis on patient pri-

vacy and comfort. Their clinic is far from the typical sterile medical office and has more of a spa-like atmosphere. The clinic opened last year, and the program is built on years of clinical experience and research.

Renew treats depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, addiction, suicidality, chronic pain and fibromyalgia. All of which have something in common: stress. When someone is in a chronic stress state, there is a reduction in the number, function, and quality of brain connections. Ketamine has been shown to increase the function and quality of connections. These connections allow neural pathways to open back up, producing proteins that increase the number of synapses in the brain. These synapses lead to a rapid resolution of symptoms – if your mind-body connection is restored in a big way, you’ll find relief.

Dr. Dall is quick to add that while Ketamine is not a drug that will solve all psychiatric ailments, “we believe Ketamine combined with psychotherapy gives patients - especially those who have not responded to previous therapies - the best chance of relieving one’s symptoms so they can live a life free of the burdens of mental and physical anguish.”

Patient Claire says she had been suffering from depression for years and despite trying multiple medications and years of therapy, she “couldn’t get out from under the weight of depression.”

Dr. Justin Yanuck, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician and Board Certified Pain Medicine Physician Dr. Tanya Dall, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician
54

“To be honest, I was skeptical about Ketamine clinics, I felt like if this worked so well, everyone would be doing it,” she says. “After my first session, I was a believer. I’m now two months out from my last injection, and while I would say I still have some baseline depression, I feel 95% better. Words cannot truly describe what the experience through the infusions taught me and how much better my quality of life is now. I’m so grateful for the entire staff at Renew Ketamine Infusion for giving me my life back.”

Dr. Deepak Chopra was interviewed recently, and stated that as a physician, he was taught to never use the word ‘healing.’ You could treat a patient or their symptoms, but you might not heal them. He disagrees, and so do Drs Dall and Yanuck. “Ketamine takes advantage of the idea that our brains are moldable: even when our brains have been damaged, we have the capacity to heal from within. Ketamine kickstarts this healing process.”

I don’t believe in a miracle drug. I don’t think that the medication we have on the market today is capable of solving all our psychiatric ailments. But I am beginning to understand that repairing the mind-body connection might give patients, like my friend’s mother, a chance to feel relief from years of chronic pain. Especially in cases where previous or traditional treatments have fallen short.

In Drs Dall and Yanuck’s experience, and based on clinical studies, about 70-80% of people will have significant relief of their symptoms. Long-lasting relief. This is a positively staggering response rate given the patient population are those who have tried and failed multiple other therapies. They set out to open a space that allowed for the optimal delivery of this powerful medication, and have succeeded in creating a program that treats patients “not as objects that are broken, but people that have the capacity to heal from within.

Cefali & Cefali, APC

Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries

It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.

ichael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.

Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm.

“The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet.

Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and

had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked

Michael and Courtney Cefali
Mit was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start to finish that he 56

for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”

Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.”

With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy.

“We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.”

Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.

The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Remarkable isn’t it, that feeling when someone takes your side?

Saving Money with the New Prescription Drug Law

Anew prescription drug law that went into effect January 1, 2023, will help save money for people with Medicare. Here’s what the law does for you:

More vaccines covered: There will be no copay and no deductible applied for more vaccines now than ever. According to Medicare.gov there are 25 covered vaccines at no cost to you as long as you have Medicare Part D coverage.

Lower costs for insulin: Medicare drug plans can no longer charge you more than $35 for a 30-day supply of insulin and can’t enforce a Part D deductible if your plan has one. Beginning July 1st, 2023, those that get their insulin through a pump that is considered “durable medical equipment” will have their insulin covered by Medicare Part B. If this pertains to you contact me to see if you’re on the right plan to make your out of pocket cost the smallest possible for the new year.

Lower out-of-pocket drug costs: Beginning in 2024 if you’re one of those people that reach the “catastrophic coverage phase” because you take expensive medications, you won’t have any co-pay or coinsurance for your medications when you reach this phase. Starting in 2025 your yearly Part D (prescription drug) out-of-pocket costs will be limited to $2000 a year!

Medicare will negotiate to get you lower drug prices: This won’t go into effect until 2026. Medicare can directly negotiate with Medicare Part D and Part B drug manufacturers that don’t have competition with other drug manufacturers. Medicare will start with 10 drugs to be announced this year for 2026, then increase to 15 drugs named for 2027 and 2028, then 20 drugs for 2029 and every year thereafter.

There will be hefty penalties and taxes for those manufacturers that don’t comply with the negotiation requirements. As someone who sees people struggling to pay their prescriptions drug copayments/co-insurance on a weekly basis, it was my pleasure to share this information with you.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF DOCTOR

Rooted in Empathy and Experience

Do you ever wonder what it is that makes some Doctors so incredibly compassionate while others have a bedside manner better suited for the DMV?

In the case of Dr. Stefanie Bennett, Lac, PhD of Bennett Acupuncture and Functional Medicine, it is a case of true empathy. *I suffered from cluster migraines in my teens and twenties.” Cluster migraines are named such for their debilitating pain that is a step above the norm. “I had migraine headaches 3-5 days a week that were so intense I was often bed ridden and would become physically sick.”

Being that migraine is one of those complicated conditions not fully understood, Dr. Bennett’s options were prescription medications that often did not work and to make lifestyle changes to limit triggers that often cause migraine. “It was no way to live.” she shares. “I was young and should’ve been living a bright, vibrant life. Instead I was monitoring my daily caffeine intake, avoiding long exposure to fluorescent lights and doing my best to prepare for changing weather conditions.

As you can imagine, Spring and Fall were especially rough. We lived in Orange County. It was Winter in the morning and Summer by the afternoon!”

It wasn’t until her primary care doctor sent her to an acupuncturist that she found real relief.

“This is why I often refer to my practice as “The Resort With The Best Results.”You’ve been everywhere else

and been given the same disheartening prognosis, prescribed the same medications and told ‘this is just something you’re going to have to learn to live.” Soon after her incredible experience with the healing arts she made the life changing decision to abandon the family business and pursue her doctorate in acupuncture, “acupuncture quite literally saved my life and I wanted to share that with the world,” she proclaims.

Your Golden Years Should Be Golden

While in school she watched as her grandmother began to suffer from peripheral neuropathy. “Your golden years should be golden, not plagued with insufferable pain while doctors and specialists tell you there is nothing they can do. Understanding that Eastern Medicine excels where Western Medicine fails, Dr. Bennett set forth to develop treatment protocols for all variations of Peripheral Neuropathy (including diabetic and chemotherapyinduced) and now has a 90% success rate in treating this once difficult to manage condition.

“I was tired of seeing the older generation suffer unnecessarily,” shares Dr. Bennett. “Diagnosing them as just getting older and giving them a treatment plan of you’re just going to have to get used to it’ has never sat well with me so I wanted to offer them a real option for treatment and care.

The Magic of Compassionate Care

And what do those in her care have to say? “Dr. Bennett looked me in my eyes and wanted to know about me, not just my condition. I feel like a person, not just a patient.” shares Anne. “In fact I don’t

think she ever used the word patient.” Others proclaim “she saved my life”, “her neuropathy treatments gave me my life back,” and “it’s a miracle she treated my fibromyalgia. I don’t know how else to explain it.”

Dr. Stefanie Bennett has a long personal history in complicated, difficult to understand conditions and understands how tragic it can all be if left untreated. “I have sat where my patients sit. I’ve experienced their pain and suffering in a very real way. I know the frustration of feeling hopeless on an intimate level. It’s why I practice the brand of medicine I do and why I’ve made it my life’s mission to treat the ‘untreatable’. It brings me such incredible joy when I get to say ‘I can help you!’”

Furthermore, Dr. Bennett isn’t opposed to more modern medical solutions. “It’s in blending the time-tested science of acupuncture with recent innovations in medicine that get me the best results.” One of those advancements is ATP Resonance BioTherapy™, originally developed by NASA it aids nerves in regeneration by providing them the nutrients they need to repair and renew, “very similar to what water does for a plant!”

Dr. Bennett and her staff specialize in treating chronic pain, complicated neurological conditions and autoimmune diseases that leave other professionals scratching their heads. Ready to schedule? Anew prescription drug law that went into effect January 1, 2023, will help save money for people with Medicare. Here’s what the law does for you:

More vaccines covered: There will be no copay and no deductible applied for more vaccines now than ever. This includes whooping cough and shingles (i.e., Shingrix which used to be very expensive) Covid 19, Smallpox and Monkeypox.

(Most affordable stand-alone prescription drug plans have a $505 annual deductible in 2023). If you get a 2- or 3-month supply at one time for your insulin, the rule still applies: no more than $35 for each month. Beginning July 1st, 2023, those that get their insulin through a pump that is considered “durable medical equipment” will have their insulin covered by Medicare Part B. If this pertains to you contact me to see

Saving Money with the New Prescription Drug Law

if you’re on the right plan to make your out of pocket cost the smallest possible for the new year.

Lower out-of-pocket drug costs: As of April 1, 2023 those of you that take biologicals and other drugs that fall under Medicare Part B (they’re typically drugs taken by an infusion) are protected by a rule that if their prices increase higher than the rate of inflation, you won’t be impacted. However, the specific drugs and potential amount that you save can change every quarter. But, in even better news; beginning in 2024 if you’re one of those people that reach the “catastrophic coverage phase” because you take expensive medications, you won’t have any co-pay or coinsurance for your medications when you reach this phase. Here’s the best news in my opinion: Starting in 2025 your yearly Part D (prescription drug) out-of-pocket costs will be limited to $2000 a year! In addition to that you can pay for medications in monthly

amounts over the calendar year vs. when you fill the prescription.

Medicare will negotiate to get you lower drug prices: This won’t go into effect until 2026 (it will be here before you know it!) For the first time Medicare can directly negotiate with Medicare Part D and Part B drug manufacturers that don’t have competition with other drug manufacturers.
