Welcome to the Christmas/New Year issue of Primary Times.

It has been a real pleasure putting together our magazine for you and rounds off the year nicely! This magazine isn’t just for Christmas as it covers all the way up to just before February Half Term so don’t throw us out with all the wrappings.

Recycling is important at all times but particularly relevent at Christmas time with all the additional waste of wrapping paper, Christmas cards, trees etc. We’ve come across a very useful website which explains exactly what to do with all your waste. At this time of year we need to thank some lovely people for all their help this year. Coping at Christmas

Christmas can be such a magical time of year and something that lots of us really look forward to.

But sometimes if your Christmas doesn’t sound the same as other people’s it can leave you feeling down. Or perhaps there are some difficulties at home that will make it a stressful time for you, instead of a time to celebrate.

At Childline we hear from lots of children who struggle to enjoy Christmas. Some feel lonely, some have arguments with family, while others miss people they want to share it with but can’t.

Some don’t celebrate Christmas because it’s not part of their beliefs and feel left out.

If you’re not looking forward to Christmas, for whatever reason, don’t worry. We’ve got some advice that will help you.

Take a break If there have been arguments at home or family members are annoying you a bit, take a break. Plan some time to listen to some music or chat to friends – this will help lift your mood and you can talk about what’s bothering you.

Don’t compare Every Christmas is different so try not to compare yours to someone else’s. People only put on social media what they want people to see so don’t worry if your Christmas doesn’t look the same.

Talk about how you feel However you’re feeling it’s important you don’t keep it all to yourself. Talk about how you feel with someone you trust – that could be a parent, carer or relative. If you don’t have anyone to talk to you can always talk to Childline.

It’s OK not to celebrate It might seem like everyone celebrates Christmas when every advert on TV is about Christmas and the shops are full of decorations and gifts. But not everyone does. If you feel left out because you’re not celebrating, you could talk to your mum, dad or carers. Or get support from our counsellors or share your feelings with other young people on our message boards.

How to feel better The Childline website has lots of tools to help you feel better.

The Calm Zone has activities, games and exercises to help you feel calm.You can log in to the website and create your own Mood Journal – this helps you let your feelings out. Or why not share your thoughts and feeling on the Childline message boards?

Parents have a lot to look forward to this Christmas with many family-friendly shows at The Hawth in Crawley. These include this year’s panto Cinderella, starring Scarlett Moffatt as Fairy Godmother, CBeebies star Nigel Clarke and Crawley favourite Michael Batchelor from Friday 10 December until Sunday 2 January. Fun Days Out with the Family Previous years have seen huge amounts raised for local good causes such as school uniform grants, days out for young carers and equipment for disabled children. The Budding Foundation give financial help to many families across Sussex suffering poverty and domestic abuse, with many success stories that we are unable to share publicly.

Ticket sales to see Santa have funded more than £80,000 of grants, so please help them to help more families by booking tickets to see Santa. In conjunction with Old Barn Garden Centre, the charity has also worked on various gardening projects with local schools.

Santa’s Coming to Old Barn Garden Centre

Brick Wonders at The Novium Museum

Get ready to take a tour around the world in LEGO® bricks, as Brick Wonders arrives at The Novium Museum in Chichester!

Brick Wonders will take you on a global journey of wonders old and new, recreated from 500,000 LEGO Bricks. Beginning with the seven wonders of the ancient world, the exhibition also takes in modern, natural and historic wonders from all seven continents and includes sights such as the Grand Canyon, Old London Bridge and the International Space Station.

An installation of The Great Barrier Reef creates a show-stopping highlight to the exhibition, complete with underwater lighting and sound effects, and LEGO® brick recreations of everything from corals and sponges to sea turtles and reef-dwelling fish including blue tangs, angel fish and a ray.

A must-see exhibition for the whole family and a real treat for LEGO® brick fans, Brick Wonders opens on Saturday 4 December and will run until 5 June 2022.

Winter Fun at Worthing Ice Rink

Worthing Ice Rink is thrilled to be back in Steyne Gardens until 27 February. It is a COVID-19 secure venue with a new look to enable greater distancing and reduced numbers on the rink. There’s a new outdoor viewing deck and Café Ice, serving winter warmers, soft drinks and snacks. As usual, the rink is under a marquee to shield you from the elements.

Prices start from £5 for both children and adults on super saver Monday and Tuesday afternoons during term times. The first session starts at 10am at weekends and during school holidays and at 1.45pm Monday to Friday during term time. A waddle of penguins is on hand to assist children under 1.2m tall.

The South Downs Planetarium in Chichester is an exciting place for people of all ages to visit. Sit back and relax. Get lost in the stunning fulldome images and breath-taking videos whilst the highly experienced and enthusiastic lecturers take you on a mind-blowing journey through space.

The Planetarium is located to the south of the City of Chichester, by the campus of the High School. With its spacious auditorium, colourful displays and well-stocked sales kiosk, the Planetarium has something for would-be astronauts and stargazers aged 6 years and above.

In conjunction with the new fulldome video system which produces stunning immersive images and video, the magnificent star projector projects nearly 4500 stars and other celestial objects onto the dome above your head.

The Planetarium is putting on a range of exciting public shows throughout the Christmas and the New Year holiday period. There is free car parking adjacent to the Planetarium building, easy access for the disabled, and it is only a short walk from rail and bus stations.

The Planetarium operates throughout the year but is not open every day and unfortunately casual callers cannot be accommodated.

Experience a magical Christmas with the National Trust at Nymans and Standen House and Garden. At Nymans, the house is richly decorated with sumptuous Christmas trees and sparkling lights, including some of the Messel family’s original Christmas decorations. In the garden, join Percy the Park Keeper on a winter wander trail, not forgetting to stop off at the Play Glade to see Percy’s shed and enjoy some festive games.
