Funny Is Power this Red Nose Day Red Nose Day is back on Friday 18 March – bigger, better and redder than ever! Whatever you and the children do, no matter how big or small, you can help people live free from poverty, violence and discrimination. So why not plan something special this Red Nose Day? Head over to www.comicrelief.com/rednoseday to explore a whole load of fun’raising resources, tips and ideas. Together, we have the power to change lives. Donate to Dress up Whether it’s dressing up or dressing down, wearing something different is a great way to sprinkle Red Nose Day joy on everyday activities – and of course, raise some money in the process. Capture the power of funny by encouraging superhero-style costumes – think Superman, Wonder Woman, or a brand new heroic creation. Children could even come dressed as someone they admire from their family or community – the more inventive, the better! If keeping it simple is more up your street, a classic non-uniform day is always a winner. Whatever you go for, just be sure to collect a small donation from all those well-dressed superstars. Sponsor the Superheroes What’s your school’s hidden talent? Does your class have a special superpower? Now’s the time to find out! Perhaps you’re great at singing, incredible at times tables, champions of the dancefloor or epic chefs. Choose your skill and set yourself a Red Nose Day challenge, asking for friends, family and classmates to sponsor your efforts and raise money for a great cause in the process. And remember, this one isn’t just for the kids! Pupils will love discovering their teachers’ hidden talents too, so get practising and prepare to take on what you do best for Comic Relief. Take on the Blue Peter challenge Get involved with this year’s Blue Peter challenge for the chance to have your superpower featured on the live special on Red Nose Day itself! Head over to www.bbc.co.uk/bluepeter to find out how to take part – and be sure to tune in on the day, whether that’s on BBC iPlayer or CBBC.

Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Sussex

Bake a Difference A few delicious sweet (or savoury!) treats go a long way when it comes to spreading the Red Nose Day joy, so why not grab a recipe and encourage some baking action? Head over to www.comicrelief.com/primary to discover a whole host of yummy, child-friendly recipes, and just see if you can’t turn those cakes, biscuits and brownies into some serious dough. Set up a stall during lunchtime, break time or after school to give children a chance to sell their baked delights – whether they’re homemade, shop-bought, or a complete mystery. And for anyone wondering, eating definitely counts as taking part!

Children’s Mental Health Week Children’s Mental Health Week is taking place on 7-13 February. This year’s theme is Growing Together. Growing Together is about growing emotionally and finding ways to help each other grow. Challenges and setbacks can help us to grow and adapt and trying new things can help us to move beyond our comfort zone into a new realm of possibility and potential. However, emotional growth is often a gradual process that happens over time, and sometimes we might feel a bit ‘stuck’. Free resources will help children and young people to explore what it means to grow together. All of the ideas can be adapted for use in school, for home-schooling, online lessons or independent learning. Children (and adults) will be encouraged to consider how they have grown and how they can help others to grow. More information can be found at www. childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk. Your Floating Bed During the first lockdown of March 2020, actor Blake Harrison and his wife Kerry Keenan Lynch were concerned about the effect this unprecedented situation was having on their two children, Autumn aged 8 and Lorcan aged 4. They noticed how unsettled Autumn and Lorcan were particularly at bedtime so they began introducing mindfulness techniques and making the practices more comprehensible and enjoyable for young minds. Combining simple guided meditation techniques with playful yet peaceful bedtime stories, the children would imagine their bed floating away to a different destination every night. What started as part of the family’s bedtime routine has now grown into a podcast collection with a fan base worldwide. The stories are now available to calm fizzy minds, promote positive well-being, and gently float away into happy dreams. They are available for free under the name ‘Your Floating Bed’ on all podcast platforms www.podfollow.com/ yourfloatingbed NAOPT Launches Website and Resources for Schools. The National Association of Therapeutic Parents (NAOPT) has launched a website packed with resources for all types of schools. By supporting schools and their teaching staff, the NAOPT hopes to raise awareness of development trauma. Children are among those most at risk when involved in a traumatic event. More common than most realise, 25% of victims of child trauma can develop mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety and PTSD. To learn more and become a member, visit www.schools.naotp.com

If You are Feeling Anxious You are not Alone! At the Parenting with Anxiety Project at the University of Sussex, they are focused on finding ways to help parents and children navigate the world with confidence. They know it is not always easy, but they believe it is possible. If you feel anxious you may find yourself feeling worried about your children. You may be concerned that they are feeling anxious too. Their research shows that with the right support parents can help their children become more confident. They now want to find out if families will benefit from an 8-module online course. If you would describe yourself as high in anxiety and have a child aged 2-11, they would love you to join them. Half of the parents will do the course and the others will just answer questions. Everyone who takes part is playing an important role in helping children with anxiety. Visit www.parentingwithanxiety.org.uk for more information.

The experience of being a Chorister is exciting and fun, and develops valuable skills that will last a lifetime. You can find out more about the Choristers of Chichester Cathedral at an annual Open Day, taking place on Saturday 5 March. Choristers spend about 18 hours each week rehearsing and singing services, as well as studying two instruments and following a full school curriculum of academic work, sport and drama – on top of performing at concerts at home and abroad. Choristers enjoy an excellent academic education at the Prebendal School, a co-ed, independent prep school immediately adjacent to the Cathedral – named by the Telegraph as one of the best value prep schools in the country. The musical and academic education is a springboard for future success. Many Choristers go on to win scholarships at prestigious secondary schools, where their choral training, discipline and team skills are highly valued. Scholarships are awarded to all Choristers, and additional bursaries are available on a means-tested basis. This event is suitable for girls and boys in Years 2 and 3, as well as their parent/guardians. On the day, children will have the opportunity to take part in an informal workshop with professional Voice Coach and opera singer Marcia Bellamy, to meet existing Choristers and Organist and Master of the Choristers, Charles Harrison. If you wish to book your space, or simply have further questions, please contact charlotte.rattray@chichestercathedral.org.uk or call 01243 812 488. Photo credit: Ash Mills

Adventures at Home

All too often our family lives follow a similar routine day after day, week after week, so that it can all get a bit humdrum. In Adventures at Home, Zoë Lake shows how to bring entertainment and excitement into your family’s lives with simple to follow, inspiring ideas for spending quality time with your family, making fun and memorable days, and all in the comfort of your own home. How about letting your children become a King or Queen for a day? Imagine they get to choose what they want to do, and as their subjects you obviously have to obey (safety allowing of course) or organise an Obstacle Course in the garden to wriggle, jump, crawl, hop around, or if the mood is a little low, what better than a bit of Disco Fever to make people happy again?

Kids can perfect their splash in the practice puddles anytime during your visit, and then enter the Puddle Jumping competitions at 11am and 2.30pm each day. They will award a daily prize to the child with the highest score based on splash height, jump height and style. The centre will choose an overall half term winner as Puddle Jumping Champion to win a pair of BOGs welly boots. The Puddle Jumping activity is included in your regular admission price. As well as splashing about in puddles there’s lots of other fun activities to have a go with like mud painting in the Outlook In craft hut, bird spotting at the Woodland Lodge hide and Wetland Discovery boat safari rides!

With ideas such as Make your Own Bunting, Spend the Night Outdoors, Study the Night Sky, Have a Cream Tea Party, Adventures at Home is packed with lots of inspiration for enjoyable things for families to do. No special equipment is needed. The book uses what you have around you. And you and your children end up with special memories to treasure for ever. Adventures At Home, 40 Ways to Make Happy Family Memories, by Zoë Lake is published by Pimpernel Press at a recommended price of £20 on 10 March.

Bluebell Railway is getting ready for another exciting year of events, including ice skating in the locomotive shed this February Half Term. Don’t worry! Display engines, like Stepney, will still be tucked up nice and warm inside the shed and be available for visitors to step aboard and explore. Road meets Rail takes place between 28 and 30 May. Set at Horsted Keynes Station in the heart of the countryside, step back in time and enjoy vintage fairground rides and see huge steam tractors, ploughing engines and road rollers busy at work. Look out for Miniature Monday! In the summer between 29 and 31 July, Stepney’s friend Fenchurch, who will be 150 years old this year, will star in a special birthday gala. His friends will come from other railways to chuff up and down the line and show the big engines that terrier engines are small, but mighty! The locomotive engineers are busy restoring Fenchurch’s boiler so he can make steam and are tidying up his motion so he can turn his wheels smoothly. He will then have a new coat of paint to match his pal Stepney – very smart!

Time to Party Petite Fairytale Boutique

The Petite Fairytale Boutique offers pamper parties with a touch of magic. They can offer glittery pamper parties run by their fluttery fairies or you can choose a slightly more grown up affair without fairies. The pamper parties can include hair styling, sparkly nails, glitter tattoos, fairy dust face sparkles and bracelet making. Your daughter and her guests will be greeted by the fairies with comfy robes on arrival. Parties include games, dancing and singing depending on the age of the children. All parties at the boutique include a royal birthday tea with a table set for a princess. Magical Fairy Parties are parties with a difference. The beautiful fairies love parties and all things

pink and sparkly! Would you like to make a fairy dust wishing bottle or decorate a fairy house? Instead of building a bear how about building a magical unicorn? The Petite Fairytale Boutique can offer various crafty parties, all with a sprinkle of fairy dust. If you would like to add a pamper element to your craft party, just ask. There are also often some very special visitors at the boutique. They can arrange for a surprise visit or a princess to join you for afternoon tea. For more information, email info@petitefairytaleboutique.co.uk, visit www.petitefairytaleboutique.co.uk or contact Fairy Godmother at the boutique during opening hours (Mon-Fri) on 01903 231 777 for bookings and enquiries.

The Party Checklist Everything you need to know to party like a pro!

Everyone knows how to throw a party. From invitations to booking a venue to ge‫מּ‬ing a cake, it’s easy to plan out ahead of time and feel like you’re ready for everything. However, sometimes the smaller details of throwing a party can get lost in the planning process and forgo‫מּ‬en about until it’s too late. This is why Primary Times has created a checklist of 10 small yet crucially important details to always remember so that you can party like a pro!

HAVE AN END TIME ☐

Parties that run on too long can be difficult for parents. If you make sure to state an end time on the party invitations, everyone will be able to plan ahead and be sure not to be late from the start.

CHECK FOR FOOD ALLERGIES ☐

Nobody wants an accidental allergic reaction to occur at a party. Give details on the invitations to contact you if any child has a food allergy that you need to know about. This will help you when choosing what food to offer to guests ahead of time.

DON’T FORGET THE ADULTS ☐

Children’s parties can sometimes be a li‫מּ‬le boring for adults. If they aren’t simply dropping their children off at the party, they are usually si‫מּ‬ing around, waiting until it’s over. Try offering

12

31 Jan - 20 Mar ‘22

alternatives for adults to have a fun time too. Providing refreshments such as tea and coffee, and playing games such as charades or Heads Up will help adults get to know each other and get into a fun, party mood. Maybe they’ll even end up hi‫מּ‬ing the dance floor.

INVITE REMINDERS ☐

DATES OF OTHER PARTIES ☐

A FULLY CHARGED PHONE ☐

Sometimes children have to make a difficult decision of whose party to go to when they are faced with two parties on the same day. To stop this from happening, ask around with other parents to get a feel of when children’s parties are happening and book your date accordingly.

REMEMBER THE LITTLE ITEMS ☐

The worst part about a party is when you forget the li‫מּ‬le items. Candles for the cake, a tablecloth to catch messy food, items for the party bags, matches or a lighter to light the cake, bin bags for the aﬞermath. Be prepared for everything by writing out all the small items you’ll need for the party.

CARPOOLS ☐

Travel can sometimes be a hassle, especially when the destination is to a venue nobody has been to before. Make sure you know how everyone will be ge‫מּ‬ing to the party and that they are confident in doing so. Carpooling might be a good option to arrange for some a‫מּ‬endees.

With everything parents have to think about each day, a li‫מּ‬le reminder of an upcoming party could be a big help. Sending out some quick online reminders will prompt people to RSVP sooner so that you can be certain of who is a‫מּ‬ending.

Whether it’s for taking pictures, finding out if someone can’t make it last minute, or simply to tell the time, a fully charged phone can be of valuable use at a party. Try to also make sure that your phone isn’t on silence and that the memory isn’t full before you start the day.

WHAT TO WEAR ☐

Be specific about what children should wear on the invitations. If it’s an active party, state that comfortable clothing and running shoes would be best. If it’s a themed party, mention costumes or a clothing colour scheme.

CHECK IN ON YOUR CHILD ☐

We can all get swept up in the rush of hosting a party but it is important to remember to check in on the person the party is for. If your child isn’t having a fun time then what good is the party? Remember that it’s their day and if they aren’t having fun, ask them how you can both change that – it could be as simple as having some early cake or playing a different party game.

Time to Party

The Princess Parlour is also available to book without a party so if you are going out somewhere for the day, you can book to enjoy a girly birthday tea later. There will always be a fluttery fairy on hand to make a fuss of the little ones and why not invite a princess to join you as a special surprise? It’s not just for children! They welcome the whole family.

Party on Down to Paradox Place

Kids’ parties at Paradox Place – Brighton’s House of Illusions - have just got a lot more interesting. The range of party activities has been extended to bring you three different exciting packages. The Bronze package will give you entry to the mindboggling attraction followed by premium quality pizza for all guests in a private party room. know from the families in Bognor, how important Razzamataz was to their children over the various lockdowns and how they have been so delighted to be back doing what they love. I’m so pleased to be giving the same opportunity to the young people in Horsham.”

New Principal at Razzamataz Horsham Early in 2020, a brand new theatre school opened in Horsham and immediately became a hit with local children. But the school’s Principal worked for the NHS and returned to doing this incredibly important job. However, the children who attended Dragons’ Den backed Razzamataz Horsham, have been missing their performing arts classes. So it is wonderful news that the school has reopened with a brand new, but extremely experienced Principal. Andrea White has been the Principal of Razzamataz Bognor for more than seven years and is set to take on Razzamataz Horsham. Andrea has been involved in performing arts all of her life. Practically born on stage to her dancer mum and stage manager dad, Andrea has performed all over the world. As well as being a Principal, Andrea has produced, directed and choreographed more than 75 shows and has spent her life inspiring young people with an interest in the arts. Andrea told Primary Times, “I’m delighted to be taking over Razzamataz Horsham, especially because parents have been contacting Head Office saying their children are really missing it. I

Three African Kings Online School Resources

A Brighton community group has launched new educational resources for primary and secondary schools, thanks to support from Sussex University, focusing on the story of the Three Kings of Botswana and their visit to Brighton and Sussex in 1895. Educators, schools and teachers from across the UK are invited to use the free downloadable schools resources on the Brighton & Hove Black History website, which include resources for teaching Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 and two short films aimed at secondary school children. The aim of the project is to combat racism in schools by providing much needed, high quality resources for teaching Black History and histories of the Empire, with a thrilling local angle for schools in Brighton and Hove and Sussex. These resources will help schools teach citizenship, history and other parts of the curriculum, as well giving local students a rooted connection to Brighton’s history of multicultural diversity. A largely untold story from Brighton’s diverse past, the Three Kings of Bechuanaland (now called Botswana) came to the UK to urge the British Government to stop Cape Colony Prime Minister Cecil Rhodes and his company, The British South Africa Company, from taking ownership of their country. Rhodes was a well-known racist and brutal employer. He wanted to build a railway across Bechuanaland linking the Cape to Cairo and to give all the land 20 miles either side of the railway line to white farmers. The kings commissioned a local Brighton man, Charles Willoughby, to organise a tour of Britain for them. They visited Brighton and Sussex as part of their visit to the UK, including visits to Elm Grove Primary School, Brighton Dome, Brighton Museum and Union Church on Ship Street. Learning Support at Slindon College

The learning support available in Slindon College’s Primary Department aims to remove barriers to learning by giving each child the confidence and skills they need to achieve their potential. The transformation seen in primary children, who have faced challenges in mainstream settings and have been at risk of school refusing, is outstanding. The boys quickly settle into the highly structured, highly supported, Primary Department where they leave happy and eager to come back the next day. Led by the SENCo and Deputy Head, Mrs Vlahodimou, the College delivers a wholeschool holistic learning support package. This ensures each pupil’s individual needs are supported throughout their time at the College. Mrs Vlahodimou told Primary Times, “In order for children to reach their potential, nurturing their happiness and self-confidence as learners is paramount. Many boys have previously had negative experiences by being placed in busy classrooms or generic special units without their specific learning needs being met. Slindon College provides a comprehensive and individualised schedule of interventions as well as adapted classroom environments in which pupils learn based on their learning styles.” The College provides support to boys with Specific Learning Difficulties including speech, language and communication difficulties and literacy difficulties such as dyslexia and numeracy difficulties such as dyscalculia. The College also provides social and emotional support to pupils who struggle with emotional resilience and social anxiety in a mainstream school setting. Find out more at www.slindoncollege.co.uk

New Sion Junior School Scholarship

Our Lady of Sion Junior School is delighted to announce that it is offering a new Scholarship for children in Years 1 or 2. The ‘Ratisbonne Scholarship’ (named after the school’s founders) is for high aptitude learners who demonstrate an ability for acquiring, retaining, and applying knowledge. These are children who will benefit from the school’s small classes where they are known and nurtured, providing exciting opportunities for ambitious academic outcomes. Steve Jeffery, Headteacher, commented to Primary Times, “We know that our small classes and education approach can really benefit children who have a thirst for knowledge and an ability to match. Our experienced teachers are able to give differentiated support to ensure that the most able children are inspired and engaged in their learning, and remain so at every stage.” Tamara Pearson, Assistant Head and Head of the Junior School added, “The early years of an education are the foundation of learning. When children are truly known and they know that they are known, the learning potential of every moment is maximised and we see children thrive academically, creatively, socially and emotionally.” Families who are interested in finding out about more are urged to contact Victoria Greco, Admissions Registrar by emailing admissions@ sionschool.org.uk.
