Adjusting to the New Normal

w

St Barnabas House ‘Night to Remember’ It’s hard to believe it’s been more than a year and a half since the first lockdown restrictions were announced and life as we knew it ground to a halt. Primary Times spoke to Wendy Robinson, Service Head at Childline. She gave us some tips to help families adjust. Although we’re able to enjoy a few more freedoms now, the impact of Covid-19 is likely to be with us for some time to come. It will have a long-lasting impact on children and families, something that they’ve heard a lot about at Childline, which continues to be there for children. The NSPCC-run service has counselled more than 73,000 children and young people UK-wide around mental health related concerns alone since April 2020. More and more young people are talking about their struggles with mental health generally but also because of Covid-19. And now as restrictions lift, this can bring a new set of worries for children. So how can we help children regain their confidence in the world again? Start slowly Getting back into a routine with attending school and seeing friends might feel difficult but a routine of familiar things will help. Take it slowly and don’t be surprised if they are reluctant or hesitant at first, be supportive and help them ease gently back into their old routines. Try something new Whether it’s a new hobby, joining a club or going somewhere you haven’t been before, trying new experiences can help children feel better about themselves. See yourself differently If your child is having negative thoughts or thinking too much about things they’d like to change, encourage them to challenge themselves. They could try writing down one thing every day that they like. It could be their smile, kindness, sense of humour. If they’re struggling, suggest they think what someone who cares about them would say. Try a new look Doing something different with the way you look can help you go beyond your comfort zone and reclaim a sense of self. Why not help them try out a new hairstyle or choose a new outfit. Help other people There are lots of ways to help others, from volunteering to just listening to a friend. It’s a great way to help children feel better about themselves and shows they’ve got positive things to share. Talk to people Try taking a breath and talking slowly and clearly. Try asking about the other person and really listen to what they’re saying. Remind children others can’t see what they’re thinking and they might not even know that they’re nervous. Building confidence can take time, but these tips are a good place to start. More advice and support can be found at www. childline.org and children can always call and speak to a volunteer counsellor, free and in confidence by calling 0800 1111.

After a year like no other, St Barnabas House hospice is looking forward to bringing their celebrated charity night walk, Night to Remember, back on Saturday 11 September, with the camaraderie and solidarity it brings to those taking part. Setting off at 10.30 pm on Saturday 11 September, Night to Remember participants will light up the streets of Worthing and walk through the night, reflecting the 24-hour nature of the care and support that St Barnabas House offers to patients and their families. Open to men, women, and children aged 10 and over, the three Night to Remember routes (7, 13.1 or 20 miles) will lead walkers along Worthing seafront, the pier and through residential streets. Sign up today and every pound you raise will help support local people with life-limiting illnesses and their families. St Barnabas House provides specialist care at the hospice in Worthing and in people’s own homes across Worthing and surrounding areas. They offer a range of palliative care services, symptom management and end of life care, providing dignity, comfort and choice, as well as ongoing emotional support and counselling for their loved ones. Registration costs just £22 (£27 with silent disco) and you can sign up at www.stbh.org.uk/night-to-remember

RSPCA Young Photographer Awards It’s back! The RSPCA Young Photographer Awards is the RSPCA’s annual animal photography competition for anyone aged 18 years or younger and it’s free to enter. This year’s competition opened in May and closes on 16 August. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get creative this summer. The RSPCA want to encourage young people’s interest in animals and the natural world, as well as to develop their photography skills. No fancy equipment or specialist skills are required to take part – just a love of animals and a keen eye. There are 11 categories to choose from, including the new Schools Challenge where pupils enter individually but also represent their school. The RSPCA crown a winner in each category, an overall winner, and there’s an online public vote in March 2022 for the People’s Choice Award. There are some fantastic prizes to be won, including a UK weekend photography break (for the overall winner and a parent/guardian) with Natures Images, up to £3,000 in Amazon vouchers, certificates and trophies. Judging takes place in September, by a panel of awardwinning and professional wildlife photographers including naturalist and broadcaster, Chris Packham, who also hosts the awards ceremony in December. Check out www.rspca.org.uk/ypa for more information.

Sustainability and Climate Change

The children in Years 5 and 6 at Storrington Primary School have been learning about energy and sustainability and the impact humans are having on the planet in terms of climate change and pollution. They have also been working on raising awareness of climate change and the harm items like plastic are doing to our environment through photographs. You can see two of their pictures here. We have also uploaded two articles, one from Willow class and the other from Larch class, on our website, www.primarytimes.co.uk/sussex. Do have a look.

Living with Mammals Survey

For the first time ever, wildlife charity the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) is running its Living with Mammals survey throughout 2021, starting this week. Due to lockdown last year, there was a giant increase in the amount of mammal sightings in people’s gardens. Do you frequently spot grey squirrels or hedgehogs in your garden? PTES is asking people to record sightings of wild mammals in their gardens this year. If you don’t have a garden, don’t worry, just choose a local park or green space that you visit regularly and record what you see there. Every sighting makes a difference. To take part, visit livingwithmammals.ptes.org, register and then record what you’ve seen on a weekly basis. Photo credit: Graham Williams, for People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES)

Fun Days Out with the Family

Real Steam Trains at the Bluebell Railway

Did you know that at the Bluebell Railway you can get on the footplate of real locomotives? That’s where you find the driver and fireman. In SteamWorks! you can step onto the Stepney locomotive. Stepney is a famous engine and has his own Thomas the Tank Engine book written about him. He is 146 years old! If you are a fireman on the railway, you don’t put out fires! Instead, you have to shovel coal into the firebox all day and keep the fire red hot. It’s thirsty work! The fire heats water in the locomotive’s boiler which makes steam. The driver uses the steam to turn the wheels and make the locomotive move. It’s amazing that steam, the wispy stuff that comes out of the top of a kettle, can move a locomotive which weighs as much as 100 cars! Being the fireman is a tricky job. If your fire is not hot enough, you will run out of steam – maybe halfway to the next station and the locomotive will stop. Too much steam and your locomotive will blow off! How embarrassing!

School’s Out for Summer...

School’s Out for Summer... There are lots of other fun things in SteamWorks! including a moving footplate, where you get to experience what it’s like travelling with the driver and fireman, and a driving experience, where you control the train simulator of Stepney on a journey to Horsted Keynes Station. SteamWorks! is also accessible for people in wheelchairs, so they can get onto an engine too. It’s great! If you want to take a sneak peek around the engine shed and SteamWorks!, check out the virtual tour of Sheffield Park Station on the website. Go to www.bluebell-railway.com and look for virtual tours, they are on the drop-down menu under ‘About’.
