Warnham Primary School Parents Launch ‘Wishlist’

With current funding cuts affecting many schools, an innovative group of parents at Warnham CE Primary School have taken matters into their own hands by collaborating with local company Business Espresso to launch an exciting new fundraising platform www.warnhamschoolwishlist.co.uk.

Warnham School Wishlist is designed to reach out to parents, carers and supporters of the school to easily donate funds where needed.

Chichester Writer Shortlisted for Waterstones Prize

Chichester author Simon Philip has been nominated for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2018, widely regarded as one of the most prestigious accolades in the world of children’s books.

Simon is shortlisted in the Illustrated Books category with Illustrator Lucia Gaggioti for their picture book I Really Want the Cake.

Simon Philip was born and raised in Chichester. After graduating from Exeter University, he became a teacher which rekindled his love of children’s literature, particularly picture books, so much so that he had a go at writing his own. I Really Want the Cake tells the engaging story of a mischievous little girl with a sweet tooth, illustrated throughout with huge energy and humour.

Simon Philips’ brilliantly inventive, witty rhymes have proved irresistible. The story of temptation and chocolate cake unsurprisingly resonates with children and adults alike.

Hedgehogs on the Edge

A new report issued in February shows that at least half the population of our native hedgehogs has been lost from the British countryside over the last two decades.

With the intensification of agriculture, loss of hedgerows and the use of pesticides which reduce the amount of prey available, all contributing to the decline in hedgehog numbers, charities are reaching out to the farming community to help protect this iconic creature.

Whilst The State of Britain’s Hedgehogs report highlights a worrying decline in our countryside, it shows a more positive outlook for hedgehogs in our towns and cities. Hedgehogs are not disappearing from urban green spaces as rapidly as they were fifteen years ago, and might even be returning.

Where they are found, numbers too, appear to be growing in some places.

City-dwelling hedgehogs have benefited from the Hedgehog Street programme in which thousands of volunteers pledged to make their gardens more hedgehog-friendly. Urban and suburban areas are becoming increasingly important for hedgehogs, so join over 47,000 hedgehog champions already signed up to help this iconic British species.

Children’s Comedy School The Comedy Drama School is a new children’s comedy school opening at New Park Arts Centre, New Park Road, Chichester on 21 April. Sue Marston and Helen Blizard, both experienced actors and drama teachers, have known for a long time that, without doubt, comedy is the perfect platform to encourage and inspire children to perform.

Sue told Primary Times, “In our classes, watch your child’s confidence and self-esteem grow and see the sheer joy they will experience when they discover the power of comedy and making people laugh.

Getting Outdoors this Spring

As we enter into spring, now is the perfect time to get children exploring their surrounding environment and discovering how nature changes over the year. They will be shown how to add compost and spring plants to their choice of a cowboy, pirate or princess bug planter, then get to take it home to look after and enjoy it.

Children can also take part in a Spring Hunt around the garden centre to find clues that will help them spell out a special word. When they complete the hunt they will receive a big slice of gourmet chocolate pizza worth £2.99.

Join the Octonauts at SEA LIFE Brighton

SEA LIFE will be recruiting young ocean explorers to take part in an all-new, deep-sea adventure this Easter as Octonauts: Shark Mission launches at SEA LIFE Brighton from 30 March until 22 April.

Come face-to-fin with SEA LIFE Brighton aquarium’s own fascinating family of resident sharks, solve the mind-bending puzzles of the mystery tanks and take part in a meet and greet with Shellington and Kwazii, exclusive to SEA LIFE Brighton. Find out which sharks can live to be 400 years old, which sharks can smell a single drop of blood in an Olympic size swimming pool and why some sharks have skin as rough as sandpaper. Visit the Octonauts art zone, take a special dive of discovery with Dashi and follow instructions from Captain Barnacles to make a shark puppet.

There’s also plenty on offer for older kids and adults, including taking a whimsical trip through the 360-degree Ocean Tunnel, exploring the marine world upon the UK’s first glass bottom boat. See interactive rock pools brimming with weird but wonderful creatures, including starfish, featured in Sea Life Brighton’s dazzling new creature installation, Sea Stars.

Octonauts: Shark Mission is included in SEA LIFE Brighton’s usual admission price, with tickets starting from £10.50 per person when pre-booking at www.visitsealife.com/brighton. Parent and toddler tickets are £13.50 and available for the final week of the event and all term time weekdays.

Paws in the Park

Paws in the Park, the show for all working, trained and pet dogs, returns to the South of England Show Ground, Ardingly 19 to 20 May. A brilliant day out for all the family, Paws in the Park provides endless activities for dogs to enjoy with their owners, plus shopping, food, camping and all day entertainment. There are masses of ‘have a go’ activities including the Dogstable Course, Temptation Alley, Terrier Racing and a huge array of outdoor trade stands. There are lots of exciting arena events including Rockwood Dog stunt team, Gundog and Agility displays.

The show is open on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 May from 9.30am to 5pm, with camping open from Friday evening. Advanced ticket prices start at £7 for children and £9 for adults and can be purchased online at www.pawsinthepark.net or on the gate.

Brighton Marina

Brighton hosts the largest marina in the UK. It features a beautiful working harbour as well as plenty of things to do for all ages, all within its picturesque waterfront surroundings.

The Big Bluebell Watch will return this spring and, once again, the Woodland Trust needs your help to spot the UK’s bluebells. Last year they collected 48,200 bluebell records across the UK and this year, with your help, the Trust hopes to discover even more.

Stagecoach Performing Arts Celebrate 30 Years

With this year marking the 30th anniversary since the initial launch of Stagecoach Performing Arts Schools, the international franchise network is coming together to celebrate in style.

To mark such a momentous occasion, numerous fun events are taking place across the globe – kicking off in early April with a weekend of tea parties. The festivities will give franchisees, teachers,

students and friends of Stagecoach an opportunity to come together and congratulate the Performing Arts franchise for 30 incredible years in (show) business.

The pinnacle of the celebrations is set to be a simultaneous performance of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Junior, at 6pm GMT on the 1 July. Can I Teach My Own Child to Swim?

Parents often ask how they can teach their child to swim, even if they are not good or confident swimmers themselves. Some parents question whether an external teacher or classes are really necessary.

Parents teach their children many things every day and you may wonder why swimming should be any different. But teaching swimming can be more complex than most people think. Knowing how to keep the process of learning to swim progressive and efficient requires a mixture of science and creativity.

If you know the science of swimming, the principles of teaching and have a good grasp of child psychology, plus, if you think your child will follow your instructions repeatedly without you or your child running out of patience, you may both find the learn to swim experience rewarding and successful. But it’s worth bearing in mind that there is a risk of getting it wrong and putting your child off swimming for a very long time or for a life time. Even with the best of intentions, parents may sometimes get things wrong.

For example a water confident parent might think forcing their child’s face in the water is a good tactic to teach water-confidence but it rarely is and often results in children refusing to allow water near their faces in future. Experienced swim teachers know how difficult it is to build trust with a child in the water and this process cannot be rushed. If a parent knows how to swim but doesn’t have any experience teaching it, the risk of pushing a child too fast at the beginning is very high. An out-of-pace start could make children feel unhappy and unsure about being in water and swimming in general.

Numbalee is a suite of over twelve number games created to help players enhance their confidence and competence with numbers whilst having fun with friends or family. Aimed at children aged six and over, Numbalee is compact in size but full of excitement. Each game has been designed to cater to a wide range of abilities, making it accessible to mathematicians of all ages and standards. The tile based number games in Numbalee aim to bridge a gap between learning and play in maths. Mary’s Meals supporters have gifted an incredible 500,000 school bags to impoverished children through The Backpack Project.

The school-feeding charity began transporting lorry-loads of used school bags in 2005. Since then, the project continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of children and parents from all over the UK, as well as support from churches, schools, clubs, workplaces and other organisations.

The backpacks, which are filled with educational and hygiene items, are given to children in schools in Malawi where Mary’s Meals are provided. The 500,000th backpack was handed out during a visit to Junior Primary schools Chigubudu and Ngabu, in the south of Malawi.

The Backpack Project is particularly well supported by young people as part of school recycling projects which invite them to bring in their old schoolbags at the end of the final term each year. Backpacks are

South East Water has created an extensive education programme to share Pure Know H2ow with the next generation.

Led by a team of dedicated and experienced volunteer speakers, South East Water offer school talks aimed at 8 to 11 year olds. The talks are fun, interactive and tie in with a host of National Curriculum topics such as science, nature and the environment.

Five Top Tips for Starting a School Garden School gardens are a wonderful way for children to interact with and learn from nature in an educational and relaxed setting.

We spoke to Matt McGlashan who set up a school garden at Walmsley C.E. Primary School and has worked with the RHS on the Green Plan It Challenge and school gardens competition. Whether your school already has a beautifully crafted garden teeming with nature, or you’re looking for ideas to get started, Matt has five top tips for you.

Keep it small.

As with all good gardens, you can’t do it all at once. Consider how much time, both curricular and extra-curricular, you can realistically devote to a garden each week and then begin with a project that is manageable within those time constraints.

Beg, steal and borrow. It is amazing just how

much gardening stuff people are willing to donate.

Parents, grandparents and local companies will often be a great source of most things you need, from bulbs to compost to old tools – you could have a ‘wear your own clothes’ day in return for the pupils bringing in bulbs.

Speak nicely to your PTA and don’t forget to look into the various grants available.

Who is going to be involved? In an ideal world every child in the school would spend part of their week gardening. In reality you need to decide which children you want to involve and when, so that as many get the chance to garden during their time at your school as possible. Do you want to target specific year groups in curriculum time each year or will this be a gardening club available to different children at different times?

What can we grow? Everything and anything! We

wish, but in truth there’s no fighting what we hear time and again which is to work with the conditions you have. Make a wish list with the children and then look at what will be possible given the conditions at school and the time you have available.What type of soil do you have, have you got sunny and shady areas, is there room for raised beds?

Think plants to inspire the children. When does it flower?

Avoid plants that only look great in July and August. What can they grow and eat? Focus on simple to grow veg that don’t require too much space (most fruit and veg will grow in a pot) or attention. Peas, carrots, strawberries, raspberries, onions and garlic are all good examples.

Grow what is reliable and you know does well. It is sometimes a good lesson to fail but generally you want the children to see the fruits of their labour.You want plants that are tough and reliable, look after themselves and don’t need too much attention. Native wildflowers and bulbs are great, just watch for the bullies that want to take over your garden.

Get the bones right. Getting the structure right early on will save you time and money and allow you to teach everything you want in your outside space.

Think about the different elements that you would like to include, such as type of planting beds or planters, composting areas, water butts, an inside space such as a poly tunnel, wildlife friendly areas, orchards, seating, supports for climbers, paths and storage space for tools and pots. Even if you can’t do all of this at once, try to have a plan of how you want the garden to evolve over time.
