Unleash your Creativity this Half Term Spend some quality family time together this Half Term, exploring your creativity or discovering a new hobby. Richmond Adult Community College (RACC) runs a series of fun art-based courses and events for families to come along to and have a go together. Whether you’re interested in a practical pottery course, a Halloween themed mini-beast wildlife drawing course, a fun flower arranging course or film-making, there is something for you and your family to enjoy.

The Halloween Mini-Beasts session is a great chance to practice drawing as well as get up close and learn more about scorpions, giant millipedes, giant land snails, stick insects, vampire crabs and tarantulas. In the flower arranging workshop you will use British home grown flowers to create a beautiful headgarland and small posies.

Pottery sessions give you an opportunity to have some messy fun as you discover hand building, slab building and pinch pots. Finally, the one day film making course will inspire 11-15 year olds to become the next Steven Spielberg as they plan, set up, film and edit a short film.

Becoming a separated parent is a dramatic change in anyone’s life – it takes time to adjust and adapt.

Parents often find themselves struggling to maintain a positive, effective co-parenting relationship with their ex-partner and this can have a negative impact on their children. Kids Come First provides the right support and advice at the time parents need it most, helping you cope – so your children can too.

Their aim is to help parents keep matters out of court where possible but everyone’s situation is unique. If you are already in family court proceedings, the workshop material is equally relevant and valuable at any point in understanding the needs of your children.

Most parents book separate workshops but Kids Come First also offers private workshops to attend together if it is appropriate and beneficial to your situation. Workshops are held in Hampton Hill (TW12) on Tuesday evenings (6-8pm) or Saturday mornings (10am-12noon). A complete workshop runs over two 2 hour sessions. The workshop fee is £125 payable on booking.

Design the Primary Times Christmas Card Every year, we at Primary Times send out thousands of Christmas cards and we’d like you to help us create the picture for this year’s card. It can be any picture you like to do with Christmas in some way.You might like to make it Father Christmas, a snowman, Rudolf with his red nose or maybe a nativity scene.You can draw or paint your picture but please make sure it is no bigger than A4.

Our picture shows our card from last year which was designed for us by Sanuli Athauola from White Meadows Primary School.

Teachers and schools are very welcome to send in a whole class’s entries in a single envelope. The winner will see their design used for the Primary Times Christmas Card and will also receive fifty copies of the card with envelopes. The new season marks the start of a new era for Emma Hayes and her Chelsea side as they begin life at their new home. Chelsea will play their home fixtures in new surroundings this campaign, with the club moving to Kingsmeadow in Kingston following a successful time at the home of Staines Town.

During that time, Chelsea have turned professional, lifted their first major silverware with the FA Cup and FA Women’s Super League titles in 2015 before going on to win the Spring Series last summer. They have also participated in two consecutive Champions League campaigns and will enter the competition again in October.

Blues boss Hayes, who was shortlisted for The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2017 award, will be hoping that success continues both on and off the pitch as Chelsea Ladies embark on this new and exciting era. She told Primary Times, “This is what every club in the league dreams about – having a home ground that they can say is theirs, it’s important we settle into our new home quickly and I think the way we’ve improved some of the facilities and the pitch is a real indication of what is important to us.

We’re going to have a brilliant playing surface, which is going to allow us to play the game we want to play, we’ve had a brand-new dressing room that will offer reminders of the players of our recent history. It’s important for us to connect with the fans in a new ground. It’s an opportunity to make new memories.”

Make Your Own Truffula Flower Dr Seuss’s The Lorax is coming to London’s Old Vic this autumn. Suitable for ages 6 and above, this is the tale of one little Lorax and his friends as they set out on a mission to protect the earth and save the beloved Truffula Trees. To celebrate, we’re showing you how to make a Truffula Flower of your very own.

Examples of the first six steps...

You will need: a recycled cereal box, scissors, a pencil or pen, a cup or similar size (to use as a stencil), a plate or similar size (to use as a stencil), glue and a recycled plastic bag Open up your cereal box to be flat with the brown side up. Draw around the cup to make a small circle.

Draw your flower inside this circle.Your flower can have petals of any shape or size; try out some different shapes for petals, hearts, diamonds, ovals etc. Cut out your flower. This is the flower that will sit on the top.

Using the remaining cereal box, draw around your plate to make a big circle. This large circle will be the base. Now draw your petals for your flower within the circle. Make your petals bigger than when you were drawing your petals for the small circle. Cut out your second flower. The centre of the large circle will be covered up, so don’t put any detail in the centre.You can use crayons, felt tip pens or paint to colour in your flowers if you would like to.

Now cut a strip off a plastic bag to be about 30cm long and 7cm wide.

Cut into the length width ways so you have a fringe like in the picture.

Carefully using the glue, stick the strip from the plastic bag underneath the small top flower.

Now you have your Truffula flower; The finished flower all made out of materials that would have been in your recycling!

If you would like to add a leaf to your flower like we have, use the remaining cardboard from the cereal box to draw a spikey leaf, paint it green and stick the flower on top of it.

The Lorax loves trees and so do we – on your Truffula flower, you could use the leaf to write a message about why you love trees too.

Tara Theatre are welcoming two fabulous family-friendly productions this Autumn.

Child of the Divide (7 – 11 November) is exciting new theatre company Bhuchar Boulevard’s first presentation. This is a moving story of a young boy, Pali, whose destiny is changed forever during the partition of India.

The Guardian’s Lyn Gardner described it as “a rare show with equal appeal to kids and adults, heart and head.” It’s a great and topical show for everyone and particularly ideal for Key Stage 2 students, studying Religious Studies, Literacy and Drama.

Prince of Fire (17 and 18 November) is a new take on the Diwali story, presented in collaboration with northern company Forest Tribe Dance. This show for children includes dance, puppetry

tale of ‘Mimi and the Mountain Dragon’ adapted from the book written by Michael Morpurgo and illustrated by Helen Stephens, presented in a Theatre Tent at the Winterville Festival on Clapham Common from 25 November to 30 December.

High up in the mountains of Switzerland the villagers of Dorta bang their drums, blow their horns and ring the bells to keep the fearsome Mountain Dragon away. But this year is different, one snowy morning Mimi discovers something extraordinary - a baby dragon sleeping in her woodshed!

Performances at weekends and in the school holidays are aimed at families but on term time weekdays, teachers can bring their whole class of children to this magical theatre production that will ignite their imagination and intrigue their sense of adventure at special rates. The show has especially been designed and created to include many elements of interaction and aims to help children develop their listening and concentration skills, whilst watching engaging and dynamic performers.

Schools can book the whole Winterville Theatre Tent exclusively for a school party. This allows schools to bring six classes and up to 20 accompanying teachers/adults (maximum capacity 200) for the special rate of £1,000, which equates to just £5 per ticket.

Do you love poetry? Well don’t miss this one-off event at the National Theatre’s Olivier Theatre on Friday 10 November celebrating Allie Esiri’s hit book, A Poem for Every Day of the Year, the follow up to the best-selling A Poem for Every Night of the Year.

Following Allie’s previous appearances at Hay, Cheltenham and more, she’s returning to the National with this very special event featuring magical and humorous poems with readers including Joanna Lumley, Stephen Mangan, Simon Russell Beale, Samuel West and Helen McCrory with live illustration throughout from renowned multi-award winning illustrator Chris Riddell.

Spooky Half Term at Squire’s

Things are getting pretty spooky this Half Term at Squire’s Garden Centres. From 23 to 31 October children can paint a ceramic pumpkin or skull tealight holder which comes complete with a complimentary LED tealight. Place it on your windowsill to brighten up your room during those long spooky evenings.

There will also be a free monster pursuit around the garden centre and a ghostly colouring competition. Each entry will receive a sticker, and the best colouring entry will win a prize!

Each Centre has a Café bar on site serving meals throughout the day, perfect after a hard day’s work of fun!

There is also free parking at all of the Centres - so keep your little ghouls entertained this Half Term by taking them to your local Squire’s Garden Centre. There’s no need to book, simply drop in between 10am-4pm from 23 to 31 October. Children are more than welcome to come in fancy dress.

The Bright Emporium

Change is afoot this Autumn in the Emporium in St John’s Hill, with a new jam-packed weekend workshop timetable.

The series of family-friendly workshops includes messy mornings every Saturday where kids can get down and dirty with a huge variety of creative materials. Each 30 minute session will be filled with mess making. Glitter, paint, glue, pom poms and anything else you can raid from the art cupboard are at your disposal – all you need to bring is your imagination and an apron.

Museum of Richmond

Discover more about Richmond’s past with hands on, creative family workshops at the Museum of Richmond. The family workshops combine object handling with fun craft activities to help children and adults discover Richmond’s fascinating history.

This October Half Term you can discover how the poor in Victorian Richmond would make do and mend by creating your own mini rag rugs to take home.

During the Christmas holidays, the museum will be exploring how the Victorians re-invented the festive season – have a go at playing Victorian parlour games and make some delightful Victorian Christmas Crafts.

You can also join Museum Explorers – a free club for 5 to 11 year olds where you can join friends of the museum, Bess and Harry, and explore Richmond’s past.

There is also a lot going on in 2018.

Focusing on the Archaeology exhibition, there will be workshops looking at art and crafts from prehistoric times through to the Vikings. The museum will also be running Art Summer Schools for children aged 11 and over.

Every year Battersea Dogs & Cats Home take in thousands of unwanted, abandoned and lost pets who just want to find someone to love them. A New Look for The Study Prep

An Interview with Cerrie Burnell Cerrie Burnell - writer, actor and children’s TV presenter, is releasing the fourth title in her Harper series, Harper and the Fire Star. The Harper books are a magical series set in the City of Clouds, an ethereal world filled with music. The stories follow Harper as she uses her musical gifts (and a little bit of magic!) to help protect her loved ones and the world they live in. Cerrie, a popular CBeebies presenter who has long been a pioneer for diversity, left the channel earlier this year to focus on her writing career. Primary Times was able to catch up with Cerrie on the eve of her latest publication.

What inspired you to write the Harper series?

It came out of a project that I did for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. They wanted a writer and presenter to write something that they could put classical music to. What I find startling about orchestras is the musicians’ talent - it’s like a magic display! Lots of musicians can play multiple instruments so the character of Harper became someone who could play anything.

Her instrument is a harp, hence her name. She doesn’t know this at the beginning and it’s a journey for her about discovering which instrument is for her.

Which character do you most relate to?

Probably the kids. I think all of the four children have some element of me in them. Liesel is that one kid who doesn’t want to do what everyone else is doing. She’s independent and does her own thing. I relate to Ferdie’s

poetic-ness, his wanting to be a writer and carrying a pencil because he thinks that then he is a poet. Nate is wise beyond his years. He has a relationship and reliance on a wolf.

Yeah I’d love to have a wolf! I think I probably know all the children best. Everyone’s very creative and slightly bonkers.

You’ve spoken before about having dyslexia, how has this affected you?

I think we have this really negative connotation which goes with dyslexia and that’s put upon us by schools who don’t have the funding to manage dyslexic children, but it doesn’t mean it’s an excuse. I was really lucky that I had an amazing headmistress at the primary school I went to, Crofton Junior School, who realised that I wasn’t stupid. This was in the 1980s when no one knew what dyslexia was. Eventually my mum got me privately assessed and following that I had four years of extra tuition. That’s the only way I learnt how to read, and I was reading within three months. I was 8 and a half and I couldn’t read anything and by the time I was 9 I was reading Enid Blyton. It’s a completely different way of teaching and what really saddens and disheartens me is that parents still have to pay to get their children recognised as dyslexic and that shouldn’t be the case.

Parents aren’t being given the support. Self-esteem is so fragile in children and it can go right down and it’s really unnecessary. Somehow I’ve got to try and do more about that, now I’ve got a bit more time. It’s something that really, really irks me.

Looking forward, what would you say is your dream?

Definitely to write more and to tell stories that perhaps haven’t been told. By that I mean looking at dyslexia and children that are on the spectrum. Writing not necessarily for children but trying to write in a way that can evoke empathy in people. I want to keep creating work really and see where that goes. I’d still like to do a bit of acting but it’d very much need to be the right thing.

If you could give one bit of advice on achieving dreams and being inspired, what would you say?

Everyone’s dream is unique to them and no one can question you on your dream because it’s yours, and if someone doesn’t agree with you, you don’t have to convince them, you don’t have to take that to heart.Your dream is specific to you, no one can tell you that you can’t do it. If you really want it then you’ll find a way.

Mummy Puff Pastry Pizza Pies
