Dodge Down to Somerset House Somerset House is welcoming back visitors this summer with Dodge, a thrilling new open air experience in its spectacular courtyard that takes an inventive twist on the traditional fairground. Dodge features dodgems with a difference, bold installations from acclaimed artists, and a delicious selection of food and drinks, from smoking hot street food to seriously extra sundaes and weekend waffle brunches with live DJ sets to kick start those long summer days. Dodge will be open from 15 July until 22 August, providing the perfect summer setting in the city to celebrate quality time with friends and family safely once more. At the centre of this immersive courtyard installation will be a buzzy bumper car track, complete with artful dodgems which trigger a burst of music with each bump, together generating an interactive musical composition titled Bumps Per Minute. Dodge riders will collectively control this unique composition as they race around the course. The manoeuvres of each rider continually manipulate the music resulting in an explosive 3 minute performance of electronic sound. Tickets are on sale at www.somersethouse.org.uk from £5. Best of all, Somerset House is offering free unlimited dodgems for under 12s on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12noon-3pm!

From Saturday 29 May to Friday 16 July, visitors will be able to step inside the caterpillar’s miniature world during a packed few months of interactive family events inspired by the popular character. Children can visit a giant ‘butterfly egg’ for outdoor storytelling sessions, before meeting The Very Hungry Caterpillar himself to gather tips for tackling their very own food challenge, a journey through a supersized forest of giant fruit and veg, assaultcourse style, to metamorphosise into beautiful butterflies. Along the way they’ll meet The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s famous friends, The Bad-Tempered Ladybird, The Very Tiny Cricket and The Very Busy Spider. They will learn about the importance of wildlife through a series of fun activities, including seed planting in the Zoo’s new Wildlife Garden. No wannabe caterpillar’s adventure would be complete without a trip to Butterfly Paradise where young bug lovers can come wing-to-wing with butterflies and moths from across the globe and learn how to welcome more colourful creatures into their own back garden or playground. The Very Hungry Caterpillar daytime activities are included for free with Zoo entry – book your Half Term tickets at www.zsl.org. Photo credit: ZSL

Operation Forest

Young musicians from World Heart Beat Music Academy are introducing their first virtual, live-streamed concert. Operation Forest highlights the ongoing need for global awareness of racial injustice and equality for all, whilst also raising awareness of the need to protect our planet. Operation Forest will be live-streamed on World Heart Beat’s YouTube channel on Sunday 23 May at 7pm.

Musicians Carla Flores and Ava Joseph came up with the concept behind Operation Forest during lockdown when they were no longer able to meet in person at the Academy. They wanted to come together virtually with their fellow musicians and express themselves in the light of Black Lives Matter whilst also wanting to give back to World Heart Beat, which has supported their musical learning since the Academy began. World Heart Beat Music Academy provides high-quality music education and fulfilling personal development opportunities for children and young people from low income and disadvantaged backgrounds, living in Wandsworth and the surrounding boroughs. Every week 370 students aged 5-25 years participate in a rich programme from grassroots to early-career level, learning and performing music from a breadth of music genres, reflective of the heritages of their diverse community. This includes Jazz, Asian, Brazilian, Celtic, Eastern European, Gospel, Gypsy, Latin and Reggae music. 4

Reading and Cooking with Marcus Rashford

Premier League footballer and anti-poverty campaigner Marcus Rashford has announced a new partnership with Magic Breakfast and Macmillan Children’s Books to launch the new Marcus Rashford Book Club with schools in disadvantaged areas of the UK. Magic Breakfast offers healthy breakfasts to around 170,000 children each school day, ensuring pupils start their day with the energy and nutrition they need to make the most of their morning lessons. As part of the programme, 50,000 free books will be donated to KS2 children in over 850 partner primary schools, including mainstream schools, Pupil Referral Units and Special Educational Needs schools. The Book Club will launch in June 2021 with its first title, A Dinosaur Ate My Sister by Pooja Puri, illustrated by Allen Fatimaharan - a laugh-out-loud, fullyillustrated time travel adventure. Marcus Rashford has also joined forces with Michelin-starred chef, Tom Kerridge, to launch ‘Full Time: Get Cooking with Marcus & Tom’. Tom has created 52 delicious family recipes, to be released on Instagram every Sunday for the next year (the first one went live on 25 April). The recipes are simple and easy to follow with emphasis on limited equipment and inclusion of store cupboard goods with a longer shelf life. Recipes will include tasty, substantial meals such as Tortilla Pizzas and Chicken Satay Stir Fry. Children and their parents or carers will be encouraged to give each recipe a try at home sharing their results via Instagram with Tom and Marcus and the hashtag #fulltimemeals. Disney has launched Courage and Kindness, a new digital storybook collection with 14 original Disney Princess stories aimed at inspiring children to help create a kinder world. The digital book, featuring unique illustrations by artists from around the world, is being gifted to kids as part of the Ultimate Princess Celebration – a new, global campaign championing the qualities of courage and kindness. The storybook follows new Disney research revealing that the majority of UK parents turn to trusted characters, such as the Disney Princesses and Queens, to help teach their kids important values and lessons. The stories aim to inspire children through the adventures and values of these characters, who each demonstrate the importance of courage and kindness in the face of adversity. The research found that kindness is regarded as the most important quality for 90% of British parents. With three quarters of UK parents of young children saying their children have become kinder and more compassionate over the last year, the new storybook demonstrates the positive values of Disney Princess characters, whether that’s Jasmine seeing the good in others, Cinderella treating others with kindness, or Belle befriending the lonely. As well as being available online for families, the storybook will also be available in selected schools across the UK. To download the book for free, visit www.disneyprincessstories.co.uk.

Keep Flying PJ

PJ is a long distance traveller and lockdown hasn’t stopped him at all. In the last five years, PJ has crossed the Sahara desert ten times, not counting all of his sea crossings and navigating the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and the Pyrenees on the Spanish/ French border. And he hasn’t quarantined once! PJ isn’t a person. He’s a very special cuckoo. He’s part of a project that is being carried out by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) to help uncover what might be driving the UK cuckoo population down. We have lost over two-thirds of our breeding cuckoos in the UK as a whole and almost threequarters of them in England during the last 23 years. PJ was fitted with a satellite tag in June 2016 and has been providing scientists at the BTO with valuable information ever since. His arrival back this spring sees him complete his fifth annual migration cycle to, from and within Africa since he was tagged, amassing a distance travelled of well over 50,000 miles and making him the only satellite tagged cuckoo to have achieved this since the project began in 2011. PJ was one year old when tagged, so this summer he will be six years old, taking him to within a year of the British longevity record for a ringed cuckoo, which stands at six years and eleven months. Keep flying PJ.You’re a hero! This spring the BTO will be tagging 12 more cuckoos and you can follow them at www.bto.org/cuckoos Photo credit: Edmund Fellowes

ABC of Opera: Classical This book is a spectacular musical adventure for children through the 500-year history of opera. Written by world-renowned opera singer, Mark Llewelyn Evans, ABC of Opera: Classical provides children with an enjoyable and educational first glimpse into the often daunting world of opera and classical music. When a school trip to the Natural History Museum in London reunites Jack and Megan with an old friend Trunk, they are whisked away to the Academy of Barmy Composers and the cities of Salzburg, Vienna and Paris for an adventure in opera’s classical period (1750–1820). Tasked with taking the music and stories of Windy Wolfie (Mozart, the penniless prodigy), Tortellini Rossini (the king of the dining table) and the moody but resilient Bilious Beethoven back to the present, will they be able to triumph over the return of Mozart’s most evil creation? It’s an accessible, fun introduction to opera for primary school children. Combining facts, jokes, songs, brilliant illustrations and a humorous story, this book is perfect for use as a teaching resource in schools as well for home-learning. The book has received praise from The National Children’s Orchestra who said, “The history of classical music has never been so much fun!” With two further ABC of Opera books planned, covering the Romantic and Modern music eras, these musical adventures through the history of opera are set to provide a unique and creative way to introduce children to this art form for many more years. 8

Fun Days Out with the Family Follow Kingston’s Magical Market AR Trail

Kingston First, the town centre’s Business Improvement District, has launched its first ever augmented reality (AR) trail in Kingston town centre, a hidden magical market that can only be seen through the magic of AR technology. School children from across the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames took part in a competition to design the trail’s characters, with twelve winning designs selected and turned into moving, dancing and wiggling 3D creations. Characters designed by the children include ‘Elfie Holly the Purveyor of Wishes’ to ‘Rona Rainbow the Purveyor of Magic Clouds for Zapping Covid’.

The trail begins at the ‘Out of Order’ installation on Old London Road (red telephone boxes), with twelve characters at different locations across Kingston town centre, accessed by either downloading the app or by scanning the QR code which can be found on the posters.

Here comes the sun!

Here Comes the Sun...

Kirsten Henly, Chief Executive of Kingston First said told Primary Times, “With the pandemic making it difficult for us to organise the usual events and activities, the Magical Market AR Trail is the perfect way for families to discover something new and enjoy being out and about in Kingston town centre in a Covid-secure way. We hope that lots of children and their families experience the trail and enjoy seeing the twelve characters come to life before their very eyes.” Head to www.inkingston.co.uk/kingstonmagicalmarket to find the app download links, view the trail map, and meet all of the characters. Kingston First are asking people to share their photos by tagging @InKingstonUK and using the hashtag #KingstonMagicalMarket.

Barnes Children’s Literature Festival

London’s largest children’s literature festival is back, from Saturday 26 to Sunday 27 June! The UK’s number one bestselling children’s authors Julia Donaldson and Sir Michael Morpurgo will herald the hugely welcome return of London’s largest children’s books event when they open the Barnes Children’s Literature Festival on Saturday 26 June. The queen of picture books, along with her husband Malcolm, will perform two shows at Barnes with singing, dancing and storytelling from her stories including The Gruffalo. Sir Michael Morpurgo returns to Barnes with his new book, A Song of Gladness, which was inspired by his time living in lockdown. Julia and Sir Michael will lead another stellar line-up with events by former UK Children’s Laureates Dame Jaqueline Wilson and Lauren Child, superstar illustrator Axel Scheffler and the country’s favourite comedian Julian Clary. They’ll be joined by master storytellers Frank Cottrell-Boyce, who wrote the award winning Millions and Cosmic among others, and David Almond, the author of Skellig. Children’s literature legend, Helen Oxenbury will make a rare appearance having designed this year’s Festival poster. She was inspired by one of her dear friends, Barnes beloved Judith Kerr and her most famous creation, The Tiger Who Came To Tea, as well as her own classic illustrations for We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. The Costa Children’s Book Award winner Hilary McKay will appear along with middle grade marvels Ross Welford and Maz Evans and some of the best known names from picture books including Rob Biddulph, Lydia Monks and the stars of Supertato Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet.

Peepal Tree Learning

The teams from Peepal Tree Learning have given us some thoughts on why people choose tutoring for their child.

When should we look at tutoring?

Sometimes a little extra help outside the classroom can really improve your child’s confidence as well as their grades. But when is the right time to think about a little extra help?

Catching up, if you have moved or your child has missed some school.

A little extra help can be very useful if your child has missed some school due to illness, injury or perhaps a house move. In some cases, even missing one topic can make it tricky as it might be something that future learning is built upon. It’s especially useful when a child moves school, as subjects might be covered in a different order. We recommend asking the teacher what’s been covered that your child may have missed. This can be discussed with the tutor to help your child catch up. The school will no doubt appreciate the support with the transition.

Help with a particular topic or in a specific area

The fast-paced nature of the classroom may sometimes leave behind a child who has not quite got to grips with something. As well as leaving gaps in their knowledge, more importantly, it can cause them to lose confidence or believe ‘I am not good at that’. Getting some tutoring support can help to identify what your child is finding tricky and address it head-on. Feeling comfortable and confident is the foundation for all learning success.

To offer challenge

Tutoring can be great if your child would like to gain an in-depth understanding of a subject – whether in preparation for an exam, such as the 11+, or simply because there is a passion or interest. The benefit of tutoring is that the teacher has time to really help your child get a full understanding. This is particularly useful if you are planning for your child to take the 11+ where true comprehension, rather than ‘learning to repeat’ is what is really being tested. To learn more about Peepal Tree Learning’s approach to tuition and why their pupils make progress, get in touch. They’d love to meet you and your family. Learn about Animals at Home

The RSPCA has launched a new education programme for parents to teach their children about animal welfare at home. The new programme focuses on the welfare of dogs, cats and rabbits and provides parents with information and activities they can do with their children. During the pandemic, there has been a huge surge in pet ownership and these activities can help prepare those families who are thinking about getting a pet, or help those who have recently bought or adopted a pet, to learn more about their animal’s needs and behaviour. The programme begins by introducing the concept of compassion and outlining the animal’s needs, there are then a range of discovery activities focusing on dogs, cats and rabbits for parents and children to complete together, and the final section is advocacy which brings together their learning and encourages the family to champion animal welfare in a creative and imaginative way. This could be carrying out a litter pick, creating a wildlife friendly garden, or keeping an eye out for higher welfare labels like RSPCA Assured when shopping. David Allen, Head of Education and Prevention at the RSPCA, told Primary Times, “Whilst adults should always be ultimately responsible for pets, caring for them can involve the whole family. Children can help with things like cleaning small animal enclosures, preparing a pet’s food and enjoying going out for walks with the dog - all as part of regular supervised family activities. Helping to care for pets can encourage children to become more responsible and increase their empathy and compassion to others.”

Mental Health and Wellbeing Workshops at Polka The Polka Theatre may be closed but that hasn’t stopped their efforts to provide educational resources and entertainment for children during the pandemic. Addressing the impact of lockdown-living on emotional and mental health, the theatre has created a series of digital Mental Health and Wellbeing workshops to be freely accessed by schools, from Reception to Year 6. Following successful in-person workshops with primary school children last autumn, Polka will now take these workshops online. The videos use drama activities to bring an interactive, practical and fun approach to talking about mental health at a young age. Using the fictional story of Mo, a boy living through lockdown during the pandemic, children will be able to explore the problems and stresses he faces, making connections with their own experiences and emotional challenges. All recordings are accompanied by activity sheets to engage learning further. With varying degrees of home-schooling having dominated the last year, Ofsted reports have shown a notable decline in children’s mental and physical stamina within the classroom. Through the digital workshops, Polka hopes to provide invaluable tools and resources to help address these problems. These filmed workshops, free to schools and the community, are part of a 10-month programme from Polka Theatre, helping children to express and understand the feelings and emotional challenges they are facing. Polka temporarily closed for a major redevelopment in February 2019 and will reopen in 2021. In the meantime, Polka continues to offer activities to schools, community groups and the public, helping to keep children creative, with a range of live, recorded and downloadable activities. King’s College School, Wimbledon, has a history of enabling bright young minds from every background to access the school. However, helping children to move from their state primary school to the new opportunities of an independent education in 20 acres of space, in the heart of Wimbledon, is about more than simply offering bursaries. It is about making the move right for each child. King’s desire to appeal to the 93% of pupils who attend state primary schools, as well as those from traditional prep schools, was the driving force behind the opening of the lower school for Years 7 and 8 in 2016. More than a third of boys in the lower school have joined from primary schools, and King’s want to encourage any bright boy who would like to come to the school to feel that King’s will do all they can to welcome him. The pastoral care at the school is exceptional, while the range of drama, music, sport and other activities is incredibly exciting, meaning that although King’s pupils do phenomenally well in public exams, this has not come at the expense of their wider interests or their own humanity. Financial assistance of up to 100% of tuition fees (inclusive of scholarships) and up to 100% of other costs (for the expense of daily school lunch, transport, uniform, relevant trips and so forth) is available. With many boys gaining bursarial support at 11 and 13, and girls (as well as boys) able to seek support with fees in the sixth form, maybe it is time to consider King’s for your child. Fun Gardening Activities for Children It’s National Children’s Gardening Week from 29 May to 6 June, so it’s the perfect time to get children into gardening. Whether you have a small patio or a large lawn, gardening is a great and inexpensive way to get your little ones outside, appreciating nature and getting creative. Here are some fun ideas which we’ve put together in conjunction with Squire’s Garden Centres to get your children into gardening. Quirky Planter Creations

Turn unwanted items into perfect plant pots! You’ll be amazed at what can be recycled – old wellies, a pair of jeans, empty food tins or even plastic bottles all make fantastic planters. Then watch as your flowers bloom.

Create Crackin’ Cress Heads

Carefully remove the top of your eggs, wash the shells and dab them dry. Draw faces on your shells with felt tip pens. Dip some cotton wool in water, squeeze out the excess, and then place one cotton wool ball inside each shell. Sprinkle a few cress seeds on top. Sit your cress-filled shells in egg cups or an egg box on a sunny windowsill and watch them grow! Cress seeds are available for £1.99 at Squire’s.

Bring Bees to Your Garden

Gardens with bees mean that your flowers and fruit will be pollinated and then set seed, and most importantly produce fruit for you.To make bees welcome, why not add quiet areas in the garden for wildlife, including bees, to take over? World Bee Day is on 20 May.You could take the opportunity to make a bee hotel. Bee homes are fun to make and can be made into a pretty, as well as a useful, feature in the garden. The Wildlife Trusts have a guide about how to make one at https:// www.wildlifetrusts.org/actions/how-make-bee-hotel. If you really get

into bees in your garden, Friends of the Earth have a Bee Saver Kit which includes a spotter guide, hints about making your garden bee friendly, bee friendly seeds and more.

Grow Your Own

Try growing tomatoes, strawberries or even a pumpkin in time for Halloween! Pumpkin seeds can be sown outdoors in May and June and are £1.99 per pack at Squire’s.

Encourage Other Wildlife into Your Garden

Add flowering plants such as lavender, foxgloves or roses which provide nectar, plant a shrub or tree for shelter, create a log pile for bugs and insects, or add a pretty ladybird tower to your garden.

Sensational Sunflowers

Sunflowers are bright and cheery and very easy to grow. Sow seeds outdoors in May and the flowers will bloom from June to September. Sunflower seeds are available for £1.99 per pack at Squire’s. Squire’s also has a ‘tallest sunflower’ competition that children can enter. Simply take a photo of your child next to their tallest sunflower between 1-20 August 2021 for the chance to win £100! Find all the details at www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk

Make Your Own Miniature Terrarium

Use a clean glass or jam jar and add a layer of decorative stones and sand. Top with soil, and then add moss on top that will act as grass. Plant miniature plants or cuttings into your jar. Add a small rock, or even mini people, Lego figures, plastic dinosaurs or animals to really bring your terrarium to life!

Make Yourself a Scarecrow

You can’t always be out in the garden to keep watch over your crops. With a few old clothes, some straw and a couple of pieces of wood to make a basic cross shape you can make yourself a scarecrow to do it for you. There are lots of guides online. He or she may not frighten many birds but scarecrows are great places for the helpful bugs to hide and will look great in the garden. You could make your scarecrow’s face, scary, funny or sweet. You could even swap heads occasionally – that might give the birds a surprise! There are 16 Squire’s Garden Centres across the South East. Shop instore or buy online for local delivery at www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk
