Local News 4

Pantosaurus and the Power of PANTS Margaret Gallagher, NSPCC Service Head of Local Campaigns, tells Primary Times readers about the NSPCC’s new book. “Since the NSPCC launched its Talk PANTS campaign in 2013, it has sparked over 1.5 million conversations between adults and their children to help keep them safe from abuse. “The campaign’s mascot is the bright yellow dinosaur called Pantosaurus. He already has his own animated music video and now he has his own book! The very first book we’ve ever published at the NSPCC. “Titled Pantosaurus and the Power of PANTS, the book was launched following a crowdfunding campaign that took place last year which saw NSPCC supporters raise £46,440 for the project. “The book, written by Rebecca Girlings and illustrated by Fhiona Galloway and Jamie Nash has been published in partnership with Ladybird. There’s even going to be an audio book, voiced by actor and NSPCC Ambassador for Childline, Natalie Dormer. “The book will help children learn about the PANTS rules which aim to help keep them safe from sexual abuse. From P through to S, each letter of PANTS provides a simple but valuable rule - that their private parts are private, their body belongs to them, and that they should tell an adult they trust if they’re worried or upset. “In the book, children will read about Pantosaurus getting a new pair of pants and Dinodad tells him that they will give him special powers. Pantosaurus then experiences a problem at school and just as Dinodad told him, his super pants give him the power to speak up. “You can get your copy from selected Matalan stores or at www.matalan.co.uk, selected Blakemore Retail SPAR stores or our NSPCC online shop and all profits from the sale of this book will support our vital work. “This bright and playful picture book is perfect for reading with younger children. Not only will they love Pantosaurus and his roarsome story, it’s also a fantastic tool for parents and carers to spark conversations with their little ones to help keep them safe. “Thanks to all the generous crowd funders who helped us create this essential book so we can empower families to talk to children about this difficult topic in an age appropriate way.” 11 Oct - 28 Nov ‘21

Young Market Traders On Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 October, 100 children from 20 London primary schools set out their stalls and sold fruit and vegetables grown from seed at Borough Market’s Harvest Sale. In a welcome return to the live event which had to be held in the schools’ playgrounds during the pandemic, every £1 raised by the school children will provide six meals for vulnerable families across the capital. The Young Marketeers programme, run as a partnership with campaigning food education charity School Food Matters, is now in its tenth year at Borough Market, and the Harvest Sale has seen 1,617 children taking their produce from seed to stall. To date, nearly 50,000 children from over 182 London schools have helped grow fruit and vegetables at their school to raise money for food distribution charities, FareShare and The Felix Project, providing almost 50,000 meals for those in need. Borough Market traders shared their selling secrets with the budding stallholders and schools were supported with growing tips from experienced horticulturists. Our picture shows children from Charles Dickens Primary School in Southwark with some of their vegetables.

School Chef of the Year Congratulations to Raheem Morgan, a school chef from Lewisham, who is to represent London at the 2021 School Chef of the Year National Final. Raheem also reached the National Final in 2020 and succeeded in taking second place nationally. Raheem is school chef at Torridon Primary School, Lewisham. The 2021 national final, which takes place between 12 and 13 October at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, is expected to be a fiercely fought cook off. Eleven regional finalists will be competing.

CBeebies Christmas Show The annual CBeebies Christmas Show is back and this year it’s an adaption of the classic poem, The Night Before Christmas. The show will be sprinkled with plenty of CBeebies magic, festive music, stunning dance performances and a star cast of CBeebies presenters and on-screen talent. Follow the adventures of Holly and her brother Jack on Christmas Eve, as they send their wishes to Father Christmas. But then they have to deal with the mischievous Wish Taker who steals those wishes. The CBeebies Christmas Show will be in local cinemas on the weekend of 4 and 5 December.

Give Little Amal a Huge Welcome

The hub recommends that your child has access to coloured pencils, pens, crayons or chalk, child safety scissors, paper and card in different colours and watercolour paint if you have some. A glue stick or PVA is also useful. Alternatively you can make your own glue by mixing one part flour with one part water until you get a thick glue-like substance. Add some more water if it’s too thick and keep on mixing to remove all of the lumps.

October Half Term at the Brunel Museum

Descend into the darkness this half term and discover the dangers of the Brunel family’s engineering masterpiece, the Rotherhithe Tunnel, from explosions to floods.

Fright Week at the Epping Ongar Railway

The Epping Ongar Railway will be running its ‘Fright Week’ services from its re-named North Weird Station to and from Ongar. Until 1994 this was part of the Central Line but for 5 zany days in the October Half Term holiday it will be taken over by ghouls, zombies and other scary creatures who would like to invite you to join them. The Halloween specials in the October Half Term have grown in popularity and are now a regular feature at the Railway. The staff and volunteers are constantly looking to ensure that the ‘Fright Week’ experience remains good fun and this year is no different. For many of the services there is a bus to pick up passengers from right outside Epping Tube station as in previous years, but now it will whisk you off to North Weird station. Once there, you’ll find a full-sized Ghost Train to take you to Ongar and its gruesome graveyard and after that you can take the ‘Spooky Train’ to the Forest – if you dare! Fright Week trains will be running from 27- 31 October. Adult fares are £16, children £10 and compartments for 6 are £75.You can 1 22/09/2021 10:48 find moreEOR2379-Halloween2021-94x136mm-002.pdf details on the EOR website www.eorailway.co.uk/events/ halloween.

How to See Jacqueline Wilson Live this Half Term

Have you heard? The beloved children’s author, Jacqueline Wilson (plus some very special guests to be announced) is joining the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conductor Mei-Ann Chen for a unique concert at the Barbican this half term.

Her books have inspired generations of children for 30 years. Now the renowned writer joins forces with a full orchestra for a family concert that will carry you into the worlds of some of her favourite characters – the fearless Tracy Beaker, the determined Hetty Feather and many more. Wilson believes anything can tell a story – music included. This multimedia concert will expand the imagination with miraculous music by composers past and present, including well-known tunes like the iconic circus music Entrance of the Gladiators. You can expect sorcery in Nymphs by Mason Bates, charm in Anna Clyne’s Masquerade and rhythmic drive in Hans Christian Lumbye’s Copenhagen Steam Railway Gallop, not forgetting the iconic theme from CBBC’s The Story of Tracy Beaker – newly reimagined for orchestra! Before each show, get stuck into free creative workshops in the Barbican foyers, all themed around Jacqueline Wilson’s books. You can see the concert at either 4.30pm or 7pm on Saturday 23 October at the Barbican Centre. If anyone in your family is deaf or hard of hearing, the first of these will also be BSL-interpreted. Tickets cost £5 for under-18s and £10-16 for adults, plus booking fee, making it an affordable way to kick off your half term with a bang. Now you just have to think about what to do on the other eight days… Find more details on the Barbican’s website, www.barbican.org. uk/whats-on

St Dunstan’s College, Catford, South London was delighted to officially open its new Junior School, STEM Block and Sixth Form Centre on Friday 17 September.

New Facilities at St Dunstan’s College

The new facilities, which were built over the last 18 months, were opened by special guests Nobel Prize winner Sir Martin Evans, and Chairman of Barclays, Nigel Higgins – both former pupils of the school.

Education News A Brighter Future

Katharine Woodcock, Headmistress of Sydenham High School GDST, takes the positives from the pandemic: “As we head towards what we hope is the light at the end of what has been, at times, an extremely dark tunnel and into a new world that reflects some kind of normalcy, we have to be thankful for what this time has taught us. The importance of community, values and caring for one another. The new ways in which we have adapted and evolved: innovative teaching embracing technology, balanced with a deeper focus on mindfulness and staying active away from devices, meant that for the new autumn term, the school and its pupils were perhaps in a better position to thrive than ever before.

Speaking about the opening ceremony, St Dunstan’s Headmaster, Mr Nicholas Hewlett said, “It was a delight to host the formal opening of our new buildings; the culmination of years of planning. It represents the most fundamental redevelopment of our College site since 1888, and to have achieved this within the context of the pandemic is testament to the creative zeal and tenacity of so many, not least our Bursar, Mrs Clair Wilkins. “I am most grateful to Sir Martin Evans OD, and Nobel Prize winner, for unveiling the plaque, and to Nigel Higgins OD, Chairman of Barclays, for his reflections on the school and its exciting trajectory. At such a milestone event, I am mindful of our foundation and the wish of the governors at the time that the school be ‘ahead of the current time’. A forward-thinking approach to education is in the DNA of St Dunstan’s, and these buildings do nothing but further promote our school in that regard.” The College’s Bursar Mrs Clair Wilkins added, “It was a real pleasure to reunite with our main contractors on Friday and enjoy the official opening of our gorgeous Junior, STEM and Sixth Form buildings, together with staff, students, parents and local partners.” Find out more about the new facilities at www.stdunstans.org.uk.

“As it stands, our pupils have the best chance in nearly two years of having an uninterrupted year of learning and being around their peers. Mental health has become a bigger priority across the board, and over the summer we welcomed athletes role-modelling the importance of mental fitness alongside physical health. Something we have long heralded. The foundations of wellbeing at Sydenham High come from the three pillars of Body, Mind and Soul which are interwoven into school life for the wellbeing of our whole community. Throughout the pandemic our pupils learned to “keep finding joy in small things and remember for every negative situation, if you look hard enough, you can always find a positive!” which is a lesson we all can benefit from. “The necessary adaptability required by the pandemic has fostered key skills of resilience and problem-solving which will stand pupils in good stead for the future. If another lockdown occurs, our pupils are well equipped to deal with, and overcome, the implications that come with that. “It’s been said countless times but the past 18 months have not been easy for any of us, especially not for the children whose learning and childhoods have been interrupted. But now is the time to look forward. Now is the time to roll up our sleeves and get back to work, building something better than what came before.” To find out more about Sydenham High School, email admissions@ syd.gdst.net, call 020 8557 7004 or visit www.sydenhamhighschool. gdst.net.

They’re proud to be a non-selective school catering for children of all faiths and all abilities in the community. They’re proud of what they do at the academy: • Ofsted describe the school’s pastoral work as “exceptional” and noted that “Pupils thrive in this aspirational, challenging and caring ethos.” (2018). • They prepare students for their future as active citizens in 21st century Britain, including taking up places in Oxbridge universities, Russell Group Universities, and securing elite apprenticeships. • They were highly commended in the 2021 National TES Awards for their work with Community and Partnerships. • They are fortunate to be part of a large Trust at the forefront of educational provision, enabling them to provide a laptop to every child in the school, and a contribution towards school uniform. The academy wants to enable children to reach their full potential and to do this they provide a broad range of subjects. The offer for all the young people includes business and enterprise, computing, a mental health and wellbeing programme and a full complement of arts subjects –all with specialists to deliver to students. They teach in a state-of-the art building with cutting-edge IT facilities, featuring a purpose built dance studio, a full auditorium, a dedicated computer suite for music technology, fully operational science laboratories and dedicated spaces for art and photography studios.

Helping Children Learn about Remembrance

The Royal British Legion, together with the National Literacy Trust, has launched a new range of free Remembrance teaching resources to help children and teenagers understand the importance of Remembrance and its relevance to all of us today. Designed for use in school and at home, pupils can discover how Britain’s national Remembrance traditions have evolved, engage in different community and national commemorations, and be encouraged to imagine what Remembrance might look like for them in the future. The RBL’s 2021 teaching kits include new assembly plans, whole school projects and stories featuring award-winning authors Terry Pratchett and David Olusoga, each coming with helpful notes for parents and educators. The academic resources will enable students to learn how the poppy has become an enduring symbol of support for our Armed Forces, and can also be used in school assemblies to observe the two-minute silence on 11 November. The Royal British Legion’s free Teaching Remembrance resources can be downloaded from the RBL’s website, www.rbl.org.uk/ teachingremembrance.

Primary Times spoke to Mrs L Fernandes, Headteacher at St Joseph’s who told us,“Our school motto is ‘Together We Can’.As a successful, forward-thinking school, we take pride in our school and the strong partnerships that exist between home, school, and the community we serve.

“Being a caring community, nurturing young people to be the best they can be is our priority. The St Joseph’s team is creative and professional, with high expectations. Children are independent learners and considerate informed citizens. We aim for excellence and inspire our children with the self-belief that they can achieve their dreams. We encourage ‘pupil voice’ and our children know their views matter. They believe they can make a difference. “High standards are set through delivery of a broad, balanced, and inspiring curriculum. Children experience learning through a variety of contexts and a range of subjects, to promote high outcomes in reading, writing and maths. We place an emphasis on learning outside the classroom and achieve this through use of our forest area, creative arts, sports and a range of visits and trips. “We are privileged to be entrusted with the vocation of teaching young people so, the expectation is that each child’s individuality is valued, and we believe all children can and will succeed.”
