Welcome to the first edition of Primary Times for the new school year. Reception families may not have seen us previously so let me explain a little about PrimaryTimes magazine. We are the only free local The Best Family Guide to What’s On what’s on magazine for families of children aged 4-11. We publish the magazine 7 times a year, two weeks before each school holiday with a Back to School issue in September. We have competitions and puzzle pages for children to enter and hundreds of listings so that nobody can get bored during the school holidays! We also carry useful education information, local theatre ideas and best of all, we are totally FREE... Innovation Celebrated at Bromley High

This summer, a cohort of Year 6 pupils from Bromley High School completed the John Lewis Innovation challenge - the brief was to design a community hub for the benefit of John Lewis and the community.

The teams undertook the challenge during Year 6 Enterprise Week, an annual initiative to help the girls develop their enterprise skills. They also devoted 10 hours of curriculum time to the challenge. Dr Garcia, a Bromley parent and lecturer at the London School of Economics, enlightened the girls about the process of team-building - Form, Storm, Norm and Perform and the different roles within a team to ensure success.

Each team submitted their competition entry, a mix of film, artwork and the written word. The school submitted eleven entries to the national competition for 9-11 year olds. Six of these made it to the final shortlist and the school took 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th places. Second place was taken by Howell’s School, securing a clean sweep for the GDST. The winning team’s design provided local start-up businesses with the opportunity to showcase and sell their products with the possibility of running workshops alongside. Amelia Rand, Grace Wu, Olivia Hillman and Zara Aslam won a tablet each and a 3D printer for the school. In total, the school’s shortlisted entries won a total of £900 of John Lewis vouchers.

Many working parents are walking a tightrope: caring for a growing family whilst earning a living. It’s the work-life balancing act. Most of the time you cope, but occasionally things go wrong.

What safety nets does the law provide in these situations?

For emergencies, there is the right to unpaid leave to deal with the immediate problem. But this is no answer to the on-going demands of domestic life.

To help with these, there are a number of well-known rights to longer term leave. However, these too are not a complete solution to the problems of a parent needing to work whilst looking after children.

One option is the right to flexible working. This applies to all employees with more than 6 months’ service and enables you to request a change in hours or working arrangements to accommodate your childcare requirements.Your employer has 3 months to respond to the request, although a considerate employer may do so more quickly. They must act reasonably in weighing up the pros and cons and they can only refuse the request on certain grounds.

There are also a number of less well-defined rights which may assist working parents in some situations. Parents and carers of a disabled child have the right to reasonable adjustments to their working arrangements to assist them with the extra demands that this entails. There is also the overriding requirement on an employer to maintain the relationship of trust and confidence in the working relationship which could be of assistance in some situations.

In most cases, the solution has to come from you. Being well informed and well prepared to put your proposals to your employer is key. Taking timely legal advice from experienced employment lawyers can help.

‘The Ugly Five’ has been launched in partnership with Tusk, the pioneering charity that supports the people and wildlife of Africa. Meet the latest classic picture book characters from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.You’ve probably heard about the ‘big five’ in Africa. Now meet Wildebeest and Warthog, Spotted Hyena, Lappet-Faced Vulture and Marabou Stork.

People call them ‘The Ugly Five’, but Donaldson and Scheffler have set out to show that they’re a lot more interesting.

Conductor John Landor and the London Musical Arts Orchestra have been thrilling young audiences with their Saturday afternoon Mini Maestro Family Concerts at the famous church of St Martin-in-the-Fields over the last 11 years. Obviously it’s a good idea to visit all the schools you’re thinking of sending your child to. Pay special attention to the environment – you know your child better than anyone so you know best what working atmosphere is most effective for them. Chat to students as well as teachers. It’s good to know that the people teaching want to be there, but if you want a more honest perception of the school you’re more likely to get it from the students. One of the most important things to look for is whether they’re happy – a happy child inevitably means a better education.

The end of the summer holidays marks the beginning of the latest adventure in your child’s life – choosing a secondary school. This task doesn’t have to be a chore however. You and your child can work together to find the perfect place for them to learn, explore and grow.

Here is a list of Primary Times’ top ten tips for choosing a school.

Make a List

Even if you think you know which school you want to send your child to, it’s important to visit a few just in case, even if it’s just to reaffirm your original choice. Even the best schools can suit some children more than others. Once you have a list of schools in your area, check to make sure each one is logistically possible – does your child meet the entry requirements? Will they be able to travel there easily?

Making the Step: Primary to Secondary School

At the moment your child is the oldest in the school, but from next September they will suddenly seem so small again. Making that move from primary to secondary school can feel like a giant leap. Education expert and teacher, Dr Stephen Curran, has some helpful tips for parents to get their child through this challenging change.

Be understanding Listen to your child’s apprehensions and help reassure them.

If you child has an older sibling or cousin, get them to have a quick chat about what to expect from secondary school.

Hearing about the many interesting and exciting aspects of school life will give your child a positive outlook.

Join teams and clubs Encourage your child to take part in the school’s extracurricular activities. Joining school clubs can help build friendships and confidence.

Organisation is key To relieve the stress of the school-run get everything together the night before – materials, books, uniform. Set times for homework to create a structured day and help your child keep up at school. Building a sense of routine at school and home will make your child’s transition from primary to secondary school as smooth as possible.

With all the statistics floating around about schools, it’s hard to know which to trust. Ultimately these reports aren’t everything, especially as their conclusions are usually based on a few days in a school, but they are all still worth looking at. There is a great resource on the government’s performance information website (head to www.gov.co.uk) which gives a detailed and clear analysis of schools in your area.

Of course it’s important to look at the grades the school has been achieving, remember to look at the overall statistics as opposed to just the ones from recent history. Final exam results may depend more on the calibre of the original than anything else but tables which purport to show ‘added value’ also have their drawbacks.

Each school year can fluctuate significantly depending on the mix of students, so just because results have gone up/down in the last couple of years, it doesn’t mean the overall standard of teaching has. Look at the general pattern of results and compare these to others in the area.

Word of Mouth

Chat to other parents and locals about the different schools.

They may know things (both good and bad) which the schools themselves may not have mentioned. It’s always good to hear from other parents what they wish they had/hadn’t done in hindsight and which questions they wish they’d asked.

Extra-curricular Activities

Not all learning takes place in the classroom, and it’s often in after school clubs that your child discovers something they are passionate for and may even want to pursue as a career. Extracurricular clubs also open your child up to new friendship groups as well as potentially being beneficial to their mainstream education.

We all respond to discipline in different ways. Some thrive under supervision and strict rules whereas others find this limiting and hard to work under. Make sure to find out what disciplinary structures are in place at each school and determine which would work most effectively with your child.

If your child needs SEN support or struggles in a certain area, what structures are in place to aid them and to make sure they don’t fall behind?

Although this shouldn’t dramatically affect your choice, it is worth taking into consideration. If your child finds making friends difficult then you don’t want to make moving schools harder with the added aspect of socialising. However this could also be a good opportunity for your child to boost their social skills, so it’s worth chatting it through to decide what is best.

When going to open days or evenings make sure to note your child’s initial reaction and how this changes over the course of the event. Ultimately if your child is happy then that’s the best outcome, and hopefully that will be reflected in their results as well. Above all remember not to worry – despite what the media may say, the standard of our secondary schools is still very high and in many cases getting higher. You are simply picking the best environment to unlock your child’s potential.

Colfe’s School Raises Money for Diabetes UK

Open morning: whole school

Colfe’s Junior School pupils and their families came out in force this summer to help raise money for Diabetes UK at their annual school fair. Children from Years 3-6 were tasked with creating entertaining and money-spinning stalls for the event and they did not disappoint. From photo booths to hairstyle fashioning, darts matches and penalty shoot-outs and a visit from a very special clown, the afternoon was awash with fun.

The combined efforts of the school resulted in £800 raised for charity which was then matched by the school’s governing body, the Leathersellers’ City Livery Company, bringing the grand total to over £1600.

Almost half of all A level grades at Bromley High were A*/A with 38% of girls achieving 3 or more A*/A grades. Top A* grades increased by a third this year, 77% of grades were A*-B and A*-C grades rose to 96%, particularly impressive given the predictions of volatility in results from the new Linear A levels.

Blackheath High School

Blackheath High are reaching a significant milestone in the school’s multi-million pound redevelopment which is due to be completed in 2018. Cheryl Giovannoni, CEO of the Girls’ Day School

Trust (GDST), will be speaking at the traditional ‘Topping Out’ ceremony to be held at the school on 3 October. ‘Topping Out’ is the contractors’ celebration of the installation of the final piece of structure or the completion of the roof on a large project and marks a significant point in the construction of any building.

The re-development of Blackheath High Senior School is a major investment by the GDST in order to create fabulous surroundings for students to reach their full potential.

Phase one of the project already transformed the historic Westcombe House into a new Sixth Form Centre designed to inspire a mature, pre-university atmosphere and a light, contemporary study environment. The next phase comprises the construction of a new Art/DT/Music wing, a new three storey main entrance building, a new exhibition space, a library that will be sunk into a new lower ground floor, a courtyard providing additional social space, additional sports storage, new changing facilities, a fitness suite and an enlarged dining area.

Contractors have provided many opportunities for students to engage with the project, not least through site tours and talks on careers in the construction industry. The school is remaining fully operational throughout the build which is being expertly managed to minimise disruption to students and local residents. General James Bashall CBE was guest of honour and Reviewing Officer at the annual Grand Day celebrations when students paraded in full ceremonial uniform for the Trooping of the Colour ceremony led by the school’s impressive military band.

Prior to Grand Day, 30 students played a central part at a special service honouring the roles of Sir Winston Churchill and General Charles de Gaulle in WWII. They provided a guard of honour and corps of drums for the unveiling of two statues in Park Richelieu, Calais, following a request to attend by British Embassy officials in Paris. The Rt Hon. Sir Nicholas Soames MP PC, Sir Winston’s grandson, inspected the school’s guard of honour. He also spoke with great warmth about the school, having visited in 2009 to act as Inspecting Officer for the drill competition parade and to present the Baroness Thatcher Sword of Honour.

Leigh Academy Blackheath, part of Leigh Academies Trust, is a new co-education secondary school for ages 11-18 opening in Blackheath in September 2018.

Although the academy is yet to write its own history they have the strength and experience of the highly-successful Leigh Trust behind them. The new school will work in close partnership with its sister academy Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy (SCWA) which received over 1,400 applications for 270 Year 7 places last year.

Sedgehill has state of the art facilities and provides an engaging and challenging curriculum which is designed to stretch and challenge all students to achieve their goals – to gain the grades required by top universities, to win places on high quality apprentice schemes or whatever other goals they may have. Students with additional needs receive specialist support from Sedgehill’s experienced inclusion team. The new Year 7 students are supported by a dedicated team as they begin their time at Sedgehill.

The school are committed to broadening the extracurricular experience of all students. Sports, music, dance, drama, art and Duke of Edinburgh clubs run regularly at lunch and after school. Sedgehill are particularly proud to be part of the Andrew Lloyd Webber programme under which all Year 7 students receive a violin and are taught how to play it.

Infant Outdoor Learning Environment

Bishop Challoner School recently completed a new infant playground. It has been created in a safe, fenced area and contains various play equipment and educational games, all specifically designed for the younger pupils at Bishop Challoner School to foster and enhance their learning.

The playground maximises opportunities for the children to interact, explore, enrich, build and to learn from their peers.

They learn to negotiate, compromise, work together and also to control themselves and tolerate and respect each other. The tractor and castle promote role play and social play, providing children with places to congregate and communicate.

The introduction of a canopy affords the opportunity to integrate the outdoors with the indoor classroom with one sense of place and identity. This enables children to move freely back and forth between the inside and outside encouraging them to experiment with autonomy and independence.

An Interview with Lauren Child Primary Times have been talking to Lauren Child, the new Waterstones’ Children’s Laureate. A writer and illustrator, she is best known for the Charlie and Lola, Clarice Bean and Ruby Redfort series. She has received numerous awards and was given an MBE in 2010 for her services to literature. Her latest book in the Charlie and Lola series, ‘A Dog With Nice Ears’, is due to be released on 28 September.

nine years old, and as soon as I finished it, I read it all over again. Another is Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking. I loved her because she was a child like no other. She was a girl and she was funny and there weren’t enough books about funny girls in those days. She’s very courageous and doesn’t really care what people think about her in the best possible way. She doesn’t worry about what she’s wearing and doing and she is able to be herself.

How does it feel to be the new Waterstones’ Children’s Laureate?

When you were growing up did you feel you could be yourself like Pippi Longstocking?

It is a great honour but it’s also a great responsibility. It feels slightly unreal too, partly because my career began almost 20 years ago, exactly the time Quentin Blake was the first Children’s Laureate.

Quentin was a huge influence on my becoming an illustrator. I loved his illustrations really before I knew who he was as a person.

There was the Grimble and the illustrations from Betsy Byers 18th Emergency, my favourite book as a child. And I remember watching him on television back in the days when the BBC had a programme called Jackanory. It was so wonderful to see live drawing as the story was told, and in fact Quentin Blake was the first illustrator I realised was an actual real person. It was so different in those days.You didn’t have the same chance to meet authors and illustrators as you do now.

What do you plan to do as Laureate?

I’m interested in championing children’s creativity and I want to encourage children to spend a little of their time looking, listening and making things because they’re driven to create. I’ll be starting a blog soon called ‘Staring Into Space’ where I’m going to hopefully help inspire that.

I also want to champion reading and drawing for pleasure and to elevate children’s book illustration to the level of other art forms. I think illustration is seen as something less than fine art, and writing for children as slightly less than writing for adults. I think we can be a little bit patronising about it. That’s a shame, because we know that literature is life-changing for children and the first art we really get up close to is in books. That’s where we begin with reading and storytelling. We do children a disservice if we can’t see and celebrate its power.

I also want to talk about diversity, as inclusivity is really important to me. There aren’t enough books written by and about people of all kinds of backgrounds and culture. It’s important because if as a child you don’t see yourself on the front cover of a book then how do you feel part of society?

Which books, authors and illustrators are your main inspirations?

I have so many. When I was a child I loved The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I remember reading it when I was about

No. I was terrible at being myself. I was very self conscious and worried about what people were thinking - am I wearing the right thing, am I saying the right thing? All of my characters in my books now are at least moving in the direction of being themselves.

How important do you think it is for children to daydream and stare out of the window?

I think it’s vital.You can’t come up with anything without a certain amount of boredom, because boredom is the beginning of invention. Solving problems and letting your mind wander and find the edges of something. It’s how you get to an inspired place and become creative. When I get really stuck in my own work now, I go out and look around at things. I go to the cinema, an art gallery, I put on the radio, I tune into people’s conversations.You hear these amazing things. And when I hear or see something interesting I write it down.You end up with notebooks full of interesting things.

What are you working on now?

I’m writing a chapter book for younger readers, for around six to nine-year-olds. It’s very, very illustrated because I missed drawing so much when I was writing my Ruby Redfort series. So - lots of drawings. My new Charlie and Lola book A Dog With Nice Ears is coming out in the Autumn. It was inspired by looking at all the dogs in the park near our home with my daughter and imagining what kind of dog we would like to have.

Do you have any advice for children that are starting to write?

My advice would be to write what you enjoy.You need to write about something that interests you. It might be something funny that you see out of the window or something that you’ve imagined or about your family.You’ve got to enjoy what you’re writing or you won’t be able to carry on.You’ve got to let things develop, listen, and watch how people talk and interact. Dig deep into your own memory and try and tap into how things feel.

Out of School Activities Swing Along with Monkey Music

Monkey Music will be opening in Eltham, Lee and Woolwich Riverside from 11 September. Monkey Music nurtures a child’s natural love of music so that it will last a lifetime. Lots of dancing and moving encourages the children to explore the space around them and express the music they hear. Jiggety-Jig (2 and 3 years) makes sure that the children develop their sense of rhythm whilst playing in time to Monkey Music songs and games. Hoops, parachute games and circle dances are always popular activities. DingDong (3 and 4 years) teaches children what music means when they see it written down.

Why should you choose ballroom and Latin American dance as a hobby? Dance is well documented to be a great form of exercise. It involves working closely with another person, promoting team work, communication and negotiation skills, often leading to strong friendships being built. In addition there are 10 different rhythms and dances to be mastered!

Blackheath School of Dance

The under 10s modern group at Blackheath School of Dance took part in their first round of competitions this year and made it all the way to the finals of All England’s Dance Festival.

When Blackheath School of Dance opened in September 2015, students and staff always dreamed of joining the amazing schools that already compete at an outstanding level at regional competitions.

With five groups in ballet, tap and modern, and two solo performers making it through to regionals in May, it was definitely a great year for the dance school. But with the under 10s modern group making it to the final, everyone at BSOD was euphoric.

Step Up Performing Arts

Step Up Performing Arts was set up nearly 20 years ago

by Nathalie Richardson. It is comprised of three different branches all of which are managed by Nathalie. She told Primary Times, “The key to Step Up success is ensuring that every child is encouraged to develop their own individual skills in a nurturing and positive atmosphere.

Many children have made potentially lifelong friends as a result of their time at Step Up.” Step Up successes include winners of Comic Relief Does Glee Club on BBC1 and children in West End shows including Lion King, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda. Step Up has also had many successes in the pop industry and has developed some fine singers over the years. The school’s group Soul Train recently appeared on Pitch Battle on BBC 1.

Hello Pet Patters! I’ve been sent some interesting questions - so here goes!!

And the first one asks, is it OK to have a dog and a cat in the same household? Fair enough, and certainly you would normally think that dogs chase cats - so no! But in fact, the chasing is triggered more by the dog’s natural instincts to chase its food - like rabbits or rats etc. And cats being more solitary (ask teacher!) creatures, will try to run away from any other larger animal they see, thus encouraging a dog to chase them! But, dogs learn things - they listen to, and then obey their “bosses” - you!

Ideally you would have a puppy and a kitten, babies, and they will both then look to you as their guide and ‘boss’.

Praising the puppy (or young dog) when it learns to sit, and let you present the kitten in your arms for it to sniff, and then giving a reward (small treat) will teach it very quickly that sniffing is OK. But ... any leaping forward, barking or trying to chase must be given a sharp “NO!”, and no treat to eat. Likewise with the kitten, staying calm (stroke it a lot) when the puppy or dog is sniffing, with no hissing or clawing also deserves an immediate treat.

After practising this routine several times a day, for a few weeks, it should then be possible for the two to meet without you holding them, but still giving rewards if they behave nicely. And subsequent ‘growing up’ together once their identities have been recognised by each other will ensure a lifelong acceptance, and quite likely a genuine friendship. Neither dogs nor cats know what they are - they are just pre-programmed to behave in certain doggy or pussy ways - BUT these can be modified by teaching, and then their own experiences. So ...

Primary Times Pets Ok - now here’s a thing! Which bird lays the largest egg?? Well, it’s likely to be the largest bird yes? But you might not think of it as a bird when I tell you it’s the ostrich!! You think of birds as flying creatures, but the ostrich is just too heavy to fly, so it’s ‘wings’ have become decorative, and are used more for display when it is looking for a girlfriend or boyfriend. The feathers are also rather ‘fluffy’, with gaps in between, so they wouldn’t be much use as ‘wings’ - but they can make an attractive flutter!

However, their eggs are certainly the largest - and are equivalent (teacher!) to about 180 chicken eggs! That would certainly make a HUGE breakfast, eh?!! But I don’t know where you would find a saucepan big enough if you like your eggs boiled!! Yum YUM!

Moving swiftly on ... Can you feed rabbits and guinea pigs the same food? Well, there’s a puzzle worth answering! And immediately I can say NO - don’t! This is because guinea pigs need extra Vitamin C in their diet, whilst rabbits don’t. Rabbits can live on grass and hay, and don’t really need other vegetables.

So, it’s OK to give rabbits some guinea pig food, as well as just their hay food, but never the other way around. Guinea pigs must always have their special diet (which includes extra Vitamin C), and not just the simple diet of hay you give rabbits.

Guinea pigs need the Vitamin C content of fresh vegetables, dandelion leaves etc, as well as some grass to chew and keep their teeth short. But giving them just rabbit food will quickly make them ill, and then you must take them to your vet! Oh dear!!

An hour’s drive inland from the port of Le Havre, Lieurey welcomes 10,000 visitors each year to its popular herring fair; this year on 11 November.
