They have tips on how to keep children safe, who should use sparklers, where to buy fireworks, which ones to buy, how to set them off and what you will need on the night.

Film Preview Guide LEGO Ninjago Movie

A new animated adventure in Warner Bros. Pictures’ LEGO franchise is in cinemas on 13 October.The LEGO Ninjago Movie, starring Jackie Chan, depicts the battle for Ninjago City as it calls to action young Master Builder Lloyd, aka the Green Ninja. RSPCA Junior Animal Magazine

New Youth Opera at Glyndebourne

A topical new youth opera exploring the experiences of young people forced by war to flee their homes has its world premiere at Glyndebourne on 11 November. Belongings has been composed by Lewis Murphy, Glyndebourne’s Young Composer-in-Residence, with a libretto by Laura Attridge.

It juxtaposes the story of a group of WWII evacuees, travelling from London to Lewes to escape the Blitz, with a present day tale of a group of refugee children who have fled various war-torn locations.

Composer Lewis Murphy said, “Belongings explores the themes of displacement and connection, both of which feel particularly current today. The development of the opera has been, and I’m sure will continue to be, a thoroughly eye-opening experience for myself and the rest of the creative team.”

Halloween Fun at Blackberry Farm Park

The leaves are falling from the trees, the nights are drawing in and preparations are well underway for Halloween week at Blackberry Farm Park. There is lots going on during the Half Term week for little monsters to enjoy including creepy crafts, story time and a spooky egg hunt as well as our usual activities; tractor rides, barrel bug rides, pony rides and animal handling.

Clucky’s Pumpkin Barn will be seasonally decorated throughout making it the perfect setting for your Halloween fun - nothing scary, just a large selection of pumpkins that you can purchase in all shapes and sizes from 14 October. As the days shorten and temperatures drop, our woodlands show signs of the new season. Walk along wooded paths, crunch on fallen leaves and smell fruits ripening in hedgerows. Use the Woodland Trust website to find a wood near you and experience the amazing autumn colour.

Autumn is an enchanting time to be out in the woods and get muddy together with your family.

Visit the Nature Detectives online for lots of exciting ideas to tempt kids – and grown-ups – from bat spotting to twilight treks. Head off on an autumn scavenger hunt to see how many autumnal signs you can discover while you’re out and about, or try collecting fallen leaves and conkers and make a wonderful woodland collage.

Why not celebrate the season at one of the Woodland Trust’s events? Light up at a lantern-making workshop, discover magical mushrooms on a fungal foray, pull on your wellies for a woodland wander or get crafty with crispy leaves.

Spooky Halloween Fun at Hever Castle Prepare to be spooked this Halloween at Hever Castle and Gardens from 21-29 October.

Meet Viscious Vampire and his Goblin friend in the Creepy Crypt and hear terrifying tales of goblins, trolls, witches and vampires.

Follow the eerie Halloween trail, help ward off vampires with a spooky activity and sink your teeth into a sweet treat at the cupcake decorating workshop.

Brighton Horrorfest Returns

Following a successful festival last year, Brighton Horrorfest is returning to Sweet Venues for 2017 with even more frights for the nights leading up to Halloween. Most events are for adults or older children but there are two events suitable for primary ages.

On 23 October there will be a Spooky Tales Puppetry Workshop.

Bring the family for some Half Term fun, make your own ghoulish puppet and then use it to tell a scary story. The workshop will start at 1.30pm, lasting two hours. Tickets cost £12 per child or £20 for two children (suitable for ages 3-9). Later on that afternoon there will be Stories from the Woods and Wild Places where you can hear scary stories for all the family from renowned storyteller Jason Buck. The session starts at 4pm and lasts 90 minutes. Advance tickets cost £8 (£6.50 concessions), or tickets on the door cost £10 (£7 concessions). Suitable for ages 9+.

Win a Maths Lesson at Hastings Adventure Golf

Kate Richards is a former maths teacher and also the manager at Hastings Adventure Golf. She’s bringing her two passions together with a competition aimed at Sussex schools offering them the chance to win a practical maths lesson for an entire class at the famous crazy golf attraction. Kate told Primary Times, “We’ve developed a range of maths lessons for primary and secondary curriculums complete with worksheets and key learning points that turn the game of crazy golf into a practical maths learning experience.”

The prize includes a ready-made, planned lesson so teachers won’t have any prep work. Areas of the curriculum covered include, geometry, basic operations, fractions and percentages, measurement and distance. Lesson plans and worksheets can be customised to suit the winning class teacher’s request.

An Interview with Cerrie Burnell Cerrie Burnell - writer, actor and children’s TV presenter, is releasing the fourth title in her Harper series, Harper and the Fire Star. The Harper books are a magical series set in the City of Clouds, an ethereal world filled with music. The stories follow Harper as she uses her musical gifts (and a little bit of magic!) to help protect her loved ones and the world they live in. Cerrie, a popular CBeebies presenter who has long been a pioneer for diversity, left the channel earlier this year to focus on her writing career. Primary Times was able to catch up with Cerrie on the eve of her latest publication.

What inspired you to write the Harper series?

It came out of a project that I did for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. They wanted a writer and presenter to write something that they could put classical music to. What I find startling about orchestras is the musicians’ talent - it’s like a magic display! Lots of musicians can play multiple instruments so the character of Harper became someone who could play anything.

Her instrument is a harp, hence her name. She doesn’t know this at the beginning and it’s a journey for her about discovering which instrument is for her.

Which character do you most relate to?

Probably the kids. I think all of the four children have some element of me in them. Liesel is that one kid who doesn’t want to do what everyone else is doing. She’s independent and does her own thing. I relate to Ferdie’s

poetic-ness, his wanting to be a writer and carrying a pencil because he thinks that then he is a poet. Nate is wise beyond his years. He has a relationship and reliance on a wolf.

Yeah I’d love to have a wolf! I think I probably know all the children best. Everyone’s very creative and slightly bonkers.

You’ve spoken before about having dyslexia, how has this affected you?

I think we have this really negative connotation which goes with dyslexia and that’s put upon us by schools who don’t have the funding to manage dyslexic children, but it doesn’t mean it’s an excuse. I was really lucky that I had an amazing headmistress at the primary school I went to, Crofton Junior School, who realised that I wasn’t stupid. This was in the 1980s when no one knew what dyslexia was. Eventually my mum got me privately assessed and following that I had four years of extra tuition. That’s the only way I learnt how to read, and I was reading within three months. I was 8 and a half and I couldn’t read anything and by the time I was 9 I was reading Enid Blyton. It’s a completely different way of teaching and what really saddens and disheartens me is that parents still have to pay to get their children recognised as dyslexic and that shouldn’t be the case.

Parents aren’t being given the support. Self-esteem is so fragile in children and it can go right down and it’s really unnecessary. Somehow I’ve got to try and do more about that, now I’ve got a bit more time. It’s something that really, really irks me.

Looking forward, what would you say is your dream?

Definitely to write more and to tell stories that perhaps haven’t been told. By that I mean looking at dyslexia and children that are on the spectrum. Writing not necessarily for children but trying to write in a way that can evoke empathy in people. I want to keep creating work really and see where that goes. I’d still like to do a bit of acting but it’d very much need to be the right thing.

If you could give one bit of advice on achieving dreams and being inspired, what would you say?

Everyone’s dream is unique to them and no one can question you on your dream because it’s yours, and if someone doesn’t agree with you, you don’t have to convince them, you don’t have to take that to heart.Your dream is specific to you, no one can tell you that you can’t do it. If you really want it then you’ll find a way.
