Chocolate Refrigerator Cake Method:

1. Place the butter/margarine, sugar, syrup and milk in a pan and heat gently until the butter has melted.

2. Add the drinking chocolate, cocoa and half the biscuits and mix well.

3. Add the remaining ingredients and stir until thoroughly mixed, then press into a 20cm sandwich tin or 18 x 18cm square tin. Chill in the refrigerator until set and then remove from the tin.

4. With the help of an adult, melt the chocolate and butter in a small bowl over a pan of hot water. Mix well.

Five Top Tips for Starting a School Garden School gardens are a wonderful way for children to interact with and learn from nature in an educational and relaxed setting.

We spoke to Matt McGlashan who set up a school garden at Walmsley C.E. Primary School and has worked with the RHS on the Green Plan It Challenge and school gardens competition. Whether your school already has a beautifully crafted garden teeming with nature, or you’re looking for ideas to get started, Matt has five top tips for you.

Keep it small.

As with all good gardens, you can’t do it all at once. Consider how much time, both curricular and extra-curricular, you can realistically devote to a garden each week and then begin with a project that is manageable within those time constraints.

Beg, steal and borrow. It is amazing just how

much gardening stuff people are willing to donate.

Parents, grandparents and local companies will often be a great source of most things you need, from bulbs to compost to old tools – you could have a ‘wear your own clothes’ day in return for the pupils bringing in bulbs.

Speak nicely to your PTA and don’t forget to look into the various grants available.

Who is going to be involved? In an ideal world

every child in the school would spend part of their week gardening. In reality you need to decide which children you want to involve and when, so that as many get the chance to garden during their time at your school as possible. Do you want to target specific year groups in curriculum time each year or will this be a gardening club available to different children at different times?

What can we grow? Everything and anything! We

wish, but in truth there’s no fighting what we hear time and again which is to work with the conditions you have. Make a wish list with the children and then look at what will be possible given the conditions at school and the time you have available.What type of soil do you have, have you got sunny and shady areas, is there room for raised beds?

Think plants to inspire the children. When does it flower?

Avoid plants that only look great in July and August. What can they grow and eat? Focus on simple to grow veg that don’t require too much space (most fruit and veg will grow in a pot) or attention. Peas, carrots, strawberries, raspberries, onions and garlic are all good examples.

Grow what is reliable and you know does well. It is sometimes a good lesson to fail but generally you want the children to see the fruits of their labour.You want plants that are tough and reliable, look after themselves and don’t need too much attention. Native wildflowers and bulbs are great, just watch for the bullies that want to take over your garden.

Get the bones right.

Getting the structure right early on will save you time and money and allow you to teach everything you want in your outside space.

Think about the different elements that you would like to include, such as type of planting beds or planters, composting areas, water butts, an inside space such as a poly tunnel, wildlife friendly areas, orchards, seating, supports for climbers, paths and storage space for tools and pots. Even if you can’t do all of this at once, try to have a plan of how you want the garden to evolve over time.

The Big Cat Sanctuary

The Big Cat Sanctuary provides a future for some of the most beautiful and endangered cats in the world. Home to over 50 cats including African Lions, Sumatran Tigers, Jaguars, Amur Leopards and Snow Leopards to name just a few, it’s located in Smarden, in the heart of the Kent countryside. The site has become a sanctuary and breeding centre that takes a personal approach to their wildlife residents.

The Big Cat Sanctuary operates by offering personal big cat experiences. These include tours, ranger days, a selection of different photographic workshops, overnight stays in their luxury lodges and adoptions. The Sanctuary holds Annual Open Days where they open the doors to the public, not just for people to see the incredible cats, but also to give an opportunity to get an insight into the global conservation work being done there. These are family fun days with arena displays of falconry and anti-poaching dogs as well as a variety of entertainment.

Visitors learn about the work being done to save what are some of the most iconic yet endangered species on planet. The Big Cat Sanctuary also contribute to in-situ conservation projects around the globe and also hosts a number of events throughout the year to raise funds and awareness of the in-situ conservation projects they support. The Big Cat Sanctuary is a leading conservation organisation of wild cats in the UK and are proud to have recently piloted an education programme within schools.

Festival of Steam and Transport

The Festival of Steam and Transport is back by popular demand and bigger than ever as part of The Historic Dockyard’s 400th birthday celebrations! Steampunks, funfair attractions and running trains will be amongst your favourites showing the delights of steam throughout the years.

Upon entry you’ll have all the fun at the fair with a free traditional funfair included in your entry.

Fly high with the sites of The Dockyard’s historic ships in view this Easter weekend on the ChairO-Planes or the Ferris Wheel and many more. New for this year too are dodgems and swing boats.

Take a ‘Kid for a Quid’ on the Bus

Bus operator Stagecoach has announced it will expand its popular ‘kid for a quid’ offer which allows children to travel for just £1 when accompanied by an adult ticket or pass holder. The £1 add-on ticket will now be available to use with any adult single or return ticket, or concessionary bus pass.

The bargain priced £1 ticket was introduced last summer, allowing kids unlimited travel for one day when accompanied by an adult day or weekly ticket holder. Stagecoach says the ‘kid for a quid’ offer was immediately popular with over 6,000 add-on tickets sold in the first week. Now customers with an adult single, return or a concession pass will be able to benefit too.

Stagecoach understands how difficult it can be to keep your kids entertained during the school holidays. They want to make your family adventures even easier by easing the burden of your travel costs.

Travel with one child, for one day, for £1. Don’t forget kids under 5 travel free.

If you’re travelling with more than one child you can buy up to a maximum of four ‘kid for a quid’ tickets. That’s just £4 for four kids.

Children must be accompanied by the adult ticket holder at all times when travelling.

Merton Vintage Show

If you’re not sure what to do on the May Day Bank Holiday, why not visit the Merton Vintage Show, the biggest vintage show in Kent.

This spectacular three day annual event is at Faversham Showground, ME13 9HY (just off the M2/A299). There is something for everyone.

You can spend the whole day/weekend wandering round and, if you fancy letting your hair down in the evening, enjoy live music and a licensed bar in the heated beer tent.

There will be various trade, craft, auto jumble and boot stalls for you to explore, as well as plenty of food bars and a licensed beer tent for refreshments open all day. There will be in the region of 500+ exhibits covering tractors, small steam engines, stationary engines, commercial, cars, motor bikes, military, living vans, displays (collections) and last but not least, a full size steam engine.

See some of these exhibits in their full working glory in the range of arena events.

There will also be plenty of other displays around the show site, which include men recreating Old Time British Wrestling, ferret racing, 4 x 4 club (with a difference), terrier racing (any dog can have a go, so don’t leave yours at home), Magic/Punch & Judy (daily), Magic Al (Juggleitall) and Magic & Fire Show, as well as stilt walking, juggling and a fully working vintage cider press where you can watch apples become cider (you can have a taste if you’re over 18) and much, much more.

We are also hoping for the following, we are just waiting for confirmation, Steel drum band from YMS, Hersden Majorette Troupe (Arena Display) and also a Birds of Prey display.

Easter ‘Eggs-travaganza’ at Whitefriars There’ll be a whole host of ‘eggs-traordinary’ children’s activities at the Whitefriars shopping centre in Canterbury this Easter!

The Easter ‘Eggs-travaganza’ event runs from Friday 30 March to Sunday 8 April (excluding Easter Sunday), from 11am to 4pm, in Whitefriars Square, Canterbury. Admission is free. There’ll be an Easter egg trail, cupcake decorating, face-painting, arts and crafts, stories, bunny boogie music/dance sessions and more, plus regular appearances from the Easter Bunny himself!

Pick up an entry form from the marquee to join in the Easter treasure trail. Find the missing words in shop windows around the centre and unscramble them to create an Easter message.

Everyone who enters Merton will receive Vintage Show an Easter treat and there’s a lovely chocolate bunny for the winner.

Awful Auntie was published in September 2014 and went to number one in the children’s book chart for seven weeks. The paperback was published in February 2016 and sold 212,000 copies, making it the best-selling children’s paperback of the year. This is the biggest show we’ve ever staged in our twentyfive-year history. It’s an enormous set to recreate Saxby Hall, a Rolls Royce car, a giant owl, and special effects, all wrapped up in the most thrilling story, which unfolds in real time – something I’m not sure has ever been done before. The Easter Programme at the Marlowe There’s an exciting programme of shows across the Easter period and beyond with something to suit all ages.

On 24 March, there’s Where’s my Igloo Gone? Oolik is an ordinary girl who goes on an extraordinary adventure to save her igloo home. On her way she meets some exciting friends to help her – including you. Suitable for ages 5+.

Then on 5 April, there are two pairs of shows from a poetic storyteller. In the morning for little ones it’s Grannylocks and The Monstrous Duckling and then in the afternoon, school age children will enjoy Zombie-rella and Blood-red Hood.

On 12 April, you can join the three delightful clowns who make waiting at a bus stop a tragically complicated affair in Better Together. They don’t know it yet, but Tropizo, Doa and Squiggle are on a journey to become best friends! But how do you make real friends in a modern world?

The Backpack Project is particularly well supported by young people as part of school recycling projects which invite them to bring in their old schoolbags at the end of the final term each year. Backpacks are filled with educational items, toiletries and clothes to ensure that every child has the resources necessary for their education. Alongside the school meals provided, Mary’s Meals is supporting children’s learning across the world.

Mary’s Meals is Primary Times’ charity of the year. They currently provide life-changing meals to 1,230,171 children in 15 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. The Kent 11+ tests the child’s proficiency in a range of English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, Non-verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning topics.

The administration of the Kent 11+ is unusual. The two Kent 11+ test papers (Maths/English questions in Test 1 and Reasoning questions in Test 2 are divided into several stand-alone sections and each section is individually timed. Timing is a challenge for many students.

The tests are multiplechoice and the candidate is instructed to record their answers on a separate multiple-choice answer sheet which is marked electronically using a special scanner known as an Optical Mark Reader (OMR).

The OMR will detect the child’s pencil marks on the answer sheet and the software will then award the child a mark for each question he or she has answered correctly.

Susan Daughtrey Education’s Kent 11+ Mock Exams have been designed to replicate, as far as possible, your child’s most likely experience on the day of the real Kent 11+ tests. This includes the type and standard of difficulty of the questions, the timing of the individual sections, the layout of the test papers and the test administration.

Following an SDE 11+ mock exam session your child’s multiplechoice answer sheet is marked electronically and you will receive detailed feedback, including a letter to parents, record table and an anonymised list of scores. Armed with this information you can finalise your child’s 11+ preparation and send him/her into the real 11+ ready to do his/her very best.

Easter Holiday Cricket Coaching at Wellesley House

Based in Broadstairs on the stunning Kent coast, Wellesley House has an outstanding reputation as a successful ‘family run’ boarding and day prep school. Wellesley gives children the best start in life and prepares them for the world beyond in many different ways. With small class sizes, pupils are genuinely able to fulfil their potential.

This Easter holiday, cricket coaching workshops are being held at Wellesley House on Wednesday 11, Thursday 12 and Friday 13 April. Aimed at girls and boys between 6 and 13 years of age, the coaching will cover all aspects of the game – batting, bowling and fielding – and will be adapted according to age and ability.

Cricketers will have use of Wellesley House’s excellent artificial nets, outfield and square for match play and middle practice (and in the event of bad weather, inside space for drill work and activity). Lead coaches are Gavin Franklin (ECB Level 4 coach, ex Warwickshire CCC and Headmaster of Wellesley House) and Tim Burleigh (ECB Level 3 coach, Sandwich Town CC).

RSPCA Educational games

The RSPCA is educating children in how to spot dangers to wildlife, how to create the perfect habitat for an animal and where to find animals, with its new online games. The games provide a fun and interactive way for primary school children to understand how their actions can affect the wildlife around them.

One of the games, ‘A day out with the Careless family’, follows the story of a family day out and encourages children to spot all the potential dangers to wildlife, such as litter, released balloons, fly tipping, traffic and construction work.

In another game, ‘Who lives where’, children create an advert for a perfect habitat for either a bird, mouse or frog.

They drag and drop different elements to make sure their chosen animals’ needs are met.

‘Animals in our school grounds’ provides a floorplan of a typical school and its grounds and encourage the children to explore where animals might make their home. It gives 22
