Campaign Launched to Save Bristol’s Last Blue Glass Site Over 7,000 people have signed a petition to help relocate a traditional glass blowing business in South Bristol.

The glassblowers are now looking for a new home as the lease expires in February 2026 and is not set to be renewed. The site of the glass workshop and store in Arnos Vale is set to be turned into flats after they are evicted.

Bristol Blue Glass was started in 1988 by James Adlington to re-establish the glassmaking tradition of Bristol that had been lost for over 60 years. The tradition can be traced as far back as the late 17th century and has been stayed in the area since then.

Bristol Blue Glass managing director, Suzanne Adlington, said: “I am deeply grateful for the overwhelming love and support we've received for our petition to save Bristol Blue Glass. With a special thank you to councillor Andrew Varney who started the

Relocated Club 3000 Bingo Hall Takes Shape A huge new proposed bingo hall for more than 1,000 card-dabbers in South Bristol has taken a leap forward according to new plans recently submitted.

We will be back with our Valentines/February feature where we will be bringing you the best places in South Bristol to eat out with your loved one as well as ideas for gifts, treats, experiences and much more.

We’ll also have more from the Witch of Knowle, some winter gardening tips to start getting your gardens ready for spring and a new recipe column starting!

A BINGO HALL that closed at Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Knowle in October has unveiled detailed plans for its move to Bedminster.

Club 3000 shut because of structural issues with the car park and ahead of the mall’s demolition to be replaced with a new area called Redcatch Quarter, which includes hundreds of homes.

It has now submitted a planning application to turn a vacant site, formerly used by Vanbase in Hartcliffe Way, into its grand new venue for up to 1,200 punters.

In planning documents, Club 3000’s agents said: “The redevelopment of the Broadwalk

Shopping Centre does not include provision for the existing bingo club, creating a pressing need for a new location that can sustain this important social and recreational amenity.

“The proposed site has been carefully selected to provide a state-of-the-art facility that meets modern standards while remaining accessible to the community it serves.”

The proposals include a large ground floor space below a mezzanine with VIP seating, and 144 car parking spaces would be provided.

The bingo hall would be open 10am to midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 2am on Friday and Saturday.

Club 3000 has 34,000 members in Bristol, with 3,000 actively playing bingo at Broadwalk before its closure.

They also have various handmade Christmas decorations for sale on their website; they are all unique and made by Bristol Blue Glass and a selection of local talented artisan makers.

Mrs Adlington said: “Over the years, we have built an international reputation for our

distinctive glassware, all while navigating economic downturns, pandemics, and various challenges.

“Our craft is unique, and we are passionate about preserving a traditional trade that is rapidly disappearing in today’s fastpaced, media-driven world.”

Mrs Adlington also said that they hope where they are located next is in central Bristol and highly visible in the community so they can continue to pass on the craft to future generations.

Bristol Blue Glass previously had a shop in the city centre that closed in January 2025. The workshop offers tours to see the glass being blown and crafted every day and even glass blowing experiences where you can try it for yourself.

General manager, David Barry, said: “To be able to come to work every day and love your job is very rare, and I hate to think that my career as a professional glass blower may be forced to come to an end.

The Big Picnic 2025 A Celebration of Community, Kindness and Collective Impact

Last year’s Big Picnic brought Knowle together in the most extraordinary way, proving once again that when a community shows up with heart, incredible things happen.

More than 2,000 people joined in for a sun-soaked day of music, activities and togetherness, an event built on love, goodwill and the belief that free, joyful community gatherings matter.

South Bristol Voice were a proud sponsor of the event.

The numbers speak for

themselves. With £50,000 generated for the local economy and good causes, The Big Picnic delivered meaningful financial impact alongside unforgettable memories. The Friends of Redcatch Park, who were responsible for delivering the event, raised £6,775 - critical funds that help them purchase tools and equipment, run the organisation, plan future events, and continue caring for the park we all love.

This year also showcased the incredible strength of Knowle’s voluntary sector. More than 20 local non-profit organisations were

invited to attend free of charge, giving them the opportunity to raise awareness, secure donations and connect with new supporters.

And behind the scenes, the day was powered by 1,000+ volunteer hours - a testament to the dedication and generosity of local people. The event itself cost £7,300 to stage, kept as low as possible thanks to the contribution of those volunteers and the support of partners.

The Big Picnic isn’t just an event - it’s proof of what happens when a community chooses compassion, creativity and connection. The Pet Chef opens it doors in Hengrove

We caught up with Liane and Rich, owners of "The Pet Chef", a new business in Hengrove offering high quality pet foods and accessories.

Going back 15 years ago we got our first German Shepherd Alfie and started feeding him raw food.

Seeing the benefits a raw diet was giving him, we decided we wanted to open up our own pet shop selling raw food so we were able to offer this to all the other wonderful pet dogs.

At that time we were not able to do this, we both had full time jobs, recently moved into our first house together and was planning for a family. Fast forward 15 years and we have been fortunate

to be able to finally open the pet shop of our dreams selling raw dog food and natural treats.

We currently stock 9 ranges of raw food and bones to suit all budgets as we want people to be able to feed the best they can to their pets. 6. Reward Yourself – go easy on yourself and enjoy the small wins!

Impact on Muslim community of the liveable neighbourhood plans Mosque leader says Muslims ‘disproportionately impacted’ by liveable neighbourhood A mosque leader has warned leading councillors that Muslims would be disproportionately impacted by plans for a liveable neighbourhood. Bristol City Council is pressing ahead with controversial plans to roll out the South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood, including in Totterdown.

The hilly neighbourhood south of Temple Meads, famous for its colourful houses, could soon get a one-way system.

Totterdown’s narrow streets are a pain for drivers to navigate and find a parking space, but the liveable neighbourhood aims to make this better with new restrictions.

The Bristol Jamia Mosque is located on Green Street in Totterdown. The mosque opened more than half a century ago and was the first one in Bristol, and is also the only mosque south of the river. Hundreds of worshippers arrive every week for Friday prayers, who could be impacted by the proposed one-way system around Totterdown and the new permitted resident parking zone.

Several locals warned councillors on the transport policy committee on Thursday, December 4, about the impacts of the liveable neighbourhood, which also covers Southville and Bedminster. Council staff are considering the responses to a recent public consultation, before revealing any changes to their designs. Any changes would start to be rolled towards the end of next year.

Umran Iqbal, representing the mosque’s management committee, said: “There’s huge usage of the mosque in Totterdown and the Muslim community will be disproportionately affected by the current plans. We think the whole process should be stopped.

We’re willing and happy to work with the council to try and find something that is a suitable solution for all of us.”

The committee also heard from other opponents of the

Bristol Jamia Mosque on the narrow streets of Totterdown, Green Street scheme, who were concerned about the use of cameras on potential bus gates. These cameras would be used to catch drivers going through bus gates, by hitting them with fines, while allowing taxis, mopeds and buses to pass. Critics also said that many people need to drive to get to work or drop children off at school.

Ken Fyfe, who lives in Southville, said: “I went to one of the consultation events. The officer I spoke to was not interested in what I had to say.

She didn’t take a single note. She kept insisting on the importance of children being able to walk safely up Stackpool Road — but they can walk safely up Stackpool Road as it is.”

Leading councillors have also faced questions about whether the strength of public opposition could scupper the whole scheme.

While some measures, such as resident parking permits, are more popular, other parts of the plans, like the bollards and planters blocking some roads, are more controversial.

Green Cllr Ed Plowden, chair of the transport committee, said: “We’re looking very carefully at

the feedback, we’ll have another round of work to design things, we’re actively considering changes, and I can’t predict the future as to whether or not it will go ahead. There’s a number of hoops still to go through.

“There are people who are very keen on this idea and there are people who are dead against it. So we’re trying to find a path through that which will attract sufficient support.”

One option suggested by opponents was splitting up the proposals. This would involve rolling out the resident parking permits, but scrapping the plans for “modal filters”, i.e. bollards, planters and bus gates which block cars from driving through sections of certain streets.

Pressed on whether this could be considered, the answer was unclear.

Cllr Plowden said: “That’s a really difficult question to answer. The simple answer would be ‘yes’, but if I say that then I may not be managing people’s expectations well.”

Also facing questions on the liveable neighbourhood was Green Cllr Tony Dyer, leader of the council, who on the same day

was grilled by John Darvall on BBC Radio Bristol. He said views on the plans were “more evenly spread than what’s in the public domain”, but admitted that the plans would be scrapped if it became clear that residents didn’t want them to go ahead.

Cllr Dyer said: “We are looking at the responses we’ve received. We’ve had nearly 5,000 responses with a range of being very supportive to very anti.

However, whether the South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood goes ahead is not predetermined. We will be listening to what residents have to say.

“And if we’re not satisfied with what we’re going to be providing and the South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood is not something that residents want, then we won’t go ahead with that. If the South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood elements do go ahead, they will be different from what’s currently proposed, because they’ll be based on feedback from local residents.”

The Park Bakery expands to North Street

You may have noticed that The Park Bakery has recently opened a second location on North Street, and as long-time fans of their St John’s Lane bakery, we couldn’t resist popping in to see how it compares.

The new North Street site opened their doors on October 30 following the success of the original bakery by Victoria Park.

Located at 49 North Street, the café also just happens to be next to the Ebenezer Gate Pocket Park, which is a fitting neighbour for the bakery’s name and charm.

Store Manager of the North Street site, Hannah Shackleton, shared how the opportunity came about: “We found the space on North Street by luck on the very day it came available.

Previously the space was used as a games shop, but we've converted it into a cafe. The space is beautiful and we couldn't give up the fantastic opportunity to make our vision a reality.”

The opening of The Park Bakery’s second location

continues a growing trend in the area. Earlier this year, Bedminster also welcomed new additions including another Southville Deli’s site and Pinkman’s Café + Bakery, both opening on East Street. Further building on the thriving food and drink businesses in the area.

Hannah also said: “Our independent small business is super passionate about locally sourced produce and baking.”

All of the cakes on sale at The Park Bakery are made in the St John’s branch by their expert cake maker. They have a range of bread, brownies, blondies, cakes, pastries, sandwiches, and pizzas on sale at both locations.

The majority of the bread at the bakery is home-made using flour from Shipton Mill and Marriages flour and brought in

fresh daily. There is a huge variety of loaves available including rustic French sticks, white, Malted, wholemeal, rye and seeded sourdoughs, and wholemeal sandwich loaves and more.

If you’re interested in breadmaking and want to try it yourself, you can purchase the same flour used by The Park Bakery in store.

We were also told that all of their coffee is ethically sourced Oddkin coffee which is brewed in Bedminster, and that if you’re a coffee enthusiast you can even buy a bag to take home.

Hannah also said that they are looking to expand and open other sites around Bristol in the new year.

A Royal Finale to a Remarkable 25th Anniversary Year at The Park Centre What an extraordinary year it's been at The Park Centre.

From community celebrations and pop ups to record levels of participation across their services, 2025 has been full of milestones.

BUT RIGHT UP THERE with the most exciting, was the honour of welcoming HRH The Duke of Gloucester, first cousin of the late Queen, who quite literally followed in her footsteps to help celebrate the centres 25th anniversary. Her Majesty visited The Park in 2005, and while much has changed since then, one thing certainly hasn’t: The Park are still there, proudly serving the community from the very place they began.

Children from Knowle Park Primary School and Oasis Academy Connaught set the tone with enthusiastic flag-waving, filling the air with colour and

smiles, a real heart-lifting sight in the current climate. The Duke’s tour included a stop at Square Food Foundation, where students were crafting chocolate yule logs, filling the kitchen with the divine aromas. At the animal centre, zoologist Dave saved HRH from an enthusiastic furry friend, while student Connor Jones calmly handled Penelope the royal python that didn’t perturb the royal visitor in the slightest.

In the Park College Common Room, more festive scents awaited as students baked

Christmas cookies. HRH joined in, creating his own biscuit, complete with big ears, much to the delight of students and tutors alike.

Back in reception, accompanied by both ITV and BBC news crews, The Duke met funders, trustees and longstanding tenants who’ve supported The Park’s mission for over two decades. Step And Stone gifted him a bag of their own deli treats, made at The Park, and five-year-old Daisy McCarthy from Little Big Steps Nursery, proudly presented a box of artisan chocolates from Zara’s Chocolates in Bedminster, because at The Park, they like to keep it local.

As The Duke and the Lord Lieutenant of Bristol, Peaches Golding bid farewell, The Park closed not just a visit, but an unforgettable year.

Building Connection in BS3 Happy New Year from all of us here at BS3 Community Development!

We’re dedicated to improving wellbeing, health, happiness, and connection for everyone living in the BS3 area.

A key part of that mission is addressing loneliness and social isolation, issues that affect people of all ages but can be especially challenging for older residents. That’s why community connection sits at the heart of everything we do.

One of our longest-running social groups is our Monday Club for Older People, held each week at the Southville Centre.

Led by facilitator Adele Lippiatt, the sessions are designed to spark conversation, creativity, and plenty of laughter.

“Sometimes people need a gentle nudge,” Adele says, “but by the end they’re joining in and leaving the centre with big

smiles on their faces.”

When asked what they enjoy most, members said it’s meeting friends for companionship and a good old chat. The group offers a sense of community, friendship and well-being. For many, it’s a weekly lifeline that brings structure, comfort, and

belonging.

Connection extends beyond Mondays. Our Morning Social in the Marksbury Road area offers a warm Wednesday welcome at Bedminster Quaker Meeting House. From 9.30– 11am, locals can drop in for a free hot drink, a breakfast

snack, and craft activities.

Some groups become so resilient that they eventually continue independently. The Art Club at Hollidge Gardens transitioned to being fully group-led in late 2024, after members grew confident enough to run it themselves.

Likewise, the Tuesday Club, launched last summer at Philip Street Chapel near Windmill Hill City Farm, has now been adopted by the church and continues to thrive with weekly chats, cuppas, and friendly support.

�THEATRE REVIEW

Gurt Haunted returning in festive form, and this time taking up residence at the Tobacco Factory Theatre, was always going to bring some supernatural comedy to North Street.

Fans of the cult show will know to expect a mix of mock-paranormal investigation, West Country humour and audience interaction, and Gurt Haunted: Miracle on North Street delivers all of that, with a seasonal twist.

The show opens with a new investigation, dropping the audience straight into the world of Gurt Haunted. The set-up will feel familiar to returning fans, but this festive edition quickly establishes its own identity, blending Christmas references

with spooky goings on.

The production plays with the idea that the audience is part of a live recording, blurring the line between spectators and participants. Audience involvement is a big part of the experience, and while this may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s handled with good humour and an awareness of differing comfort levels. On the night I attended, the crowd skewed fairly young, and they were definitely fully on board- laughing and clearly enjoying being part of the action.

The script feels partly improvised and moves at speed.

There are plenty of smart and silly moments, with clever references and visual gags , the candy cane dowsing rods being my particular favourite. While the show isn’t completely polished, it’s full of warmth, energy and clear comic commitment from the performers.

It is really funny, with a talented trio and a very different Christmas show I’m already excited to see where the next Gurt Haunted investigation takes us in 2026.

What Moths live in the Bedminster Area?

BS3 Wildlife Group has four moth traps. These are boxes with a light on top left overnight in back gardens.

Moth are attracted to the light, enter the box and can be identified and liberated the following morning.

But, not always identified as most of our moth trappers are beginners. Many are children.

There are around 2,500 UK moths species, compared to c60 butterflies. Both, along with bees and other insects, provide free labour to pollinate our food and decorative plants. In return we grub away the ‘weeds’ on which their caterpillars feed.

Help with identification can come from books, apps and other sources. Posting a picture on our facebook page usually gets a result.

We are starting to sort out the information from 2025 with a report early in 2026. One pleasing result is that several 2025 moth trappers say they want to do it again. We may need

to buy more traps!

My prediction for the total is around 200 Bedminster species, mostly night flyers, but also a few day moths. This sounds like a good result, but as well as the range of species the actual number of individuals, both moths and butterflies, is much reduced compared with, say, 25, 50 and 100 years ago largely because of increased use of chemical poisons (they kills ‘pests’, but lots of other things too) and destruction of habitats.

Of course, the reduction in moth populations impacts bats as moths are their main food.

2025 was also the second year of our bat survey. Again, we leave the detectors overnight in local gardens. 2024 suggested that about 8 to 10 species (out of 18) live in or visit Greater Bedminster. Will the 2025 results confirm this?

The mug is mightier than the spade in January Christmas is over, and I’m itching to swap sprouts for a spade. Before we launch ourselves into short days and dodgy weather, here’s some things that do need doing right now. Plus a fair few that don’t.

Do: plant bare-root trees and shrubs. They’re cheaper at this time of year, and planting now should mean they’re ready to grow strongly in spring. Do prune apples, pears, currants and roses, before they start growing again in early spring. Do stare at seed catalogues, buy too many packets, then wonder where you’ll put them all.

Don’t: Tidy up! I know it’s tempting, once the winter winds have battered the garden, to whip round with secateurs and a rake.

But this is a crucial time of year for over-wintering wildlife – no one wants to be homeless in January.

So hold off until you see the first signs of new growth before removing dead leaves, stems and

And finally, another do. Do sit back and take a good look at your garden. This is the best time of year to look at the bare bones, and plan changes to the underlying design of your space. Garden designers love this time of year, and you can too. Just make sure you put the kettle on.

In Witch Ignored Warnings has Consequences

Mum’s care home is about an hour’s drive away. I try to go every week.

Nurse Savage collared me as I opened the door. “Ahh, you are on my list,” she stated. “Your Mum has run out of all her toiletries. She has none. Maybe get her some for Christmas? But she needs them now. Anyway, can I leave that with you?” Before I could respond, she trotted off, ticking me off her list.

I sighed and went to look for Mum. I found her in Richard’s bed, just lying there, one eye open.

Goodness knows what’s wrong with the other eye. She didn’t acknowledge me. I picked up her hand and gave it a squeeze and we sat for a while - me looking around at Richard’s stuff, which was minimal, and Mum just staring at

me blankly with the one eye.

I wondered where Richard was.

He does have a thing for Mum. On one visit he asked me if Mum was a virgin. “Of course she is,” I told him firmly, “and she is staying that way, aren’t you Mum?” Which was a crazy statement, but I was in a crazy place.

I decided to go and get the toiletries. When I got back, laden with luxurious smellies, Mum was still in Richard’s room, curled up asleep, with thankfully still no sign of Romeo Rich.

My phone rang. It was Spanish Girl Child. “Hey. I have some news.”

Gawd. Is she pregnant? I held the phone a little tighter. “I’ve had a fall and broken my foot.” I must admit I was a tad relieved.

Turns out she’d snapped two bones in her ankle, resulting in her foot facing the wrong way. Ouch.

THE WICKED WITCH OF KNOWLE

But she had insurance and had been whizzed off to hospital. “Do you want Mummy to come and look after you, darling?” I soothed, thinking I’d quite like a trip to Spain. “Good God, no thanks Mum,” she responded a little too quickly, with a slight edge of panic in her voice. Rude.

Fast forward two weeks.

Spanish Girl Child had an operation fixing her bones with screws. Her doctor did not speak any English and my daughter currently speaks Spanglish, so it was hard work.

She’s back at her home now but can’t put any weight on her foot, and nobody has checked the wound for about five days, which surely can’t be right - but I’m not surprised. I reminded her about the Spanish Embassy incinerating her documents in error when she’d

applied to go to Spain. It was definitely a sign from the Universe telling her not to go, she ignored this and look what’s happened.

I know. I’m not helpful.

To be honest, 2025 was a rubbish year. Bring on 2026. What could possibly go wrong?

Newbie Knitter creates Crowdfunder to Care.

Ryan Baker- Kondrot is a stay at home dad who recently decided to put his minimal spare time to use to help others in the community.

Knitting is a very popular activity and we have a fantastic supply of wool and supplies on East Street in No Fills Knitting. Speaking to Ryan he shared with us how he got started.

"I started Knits by Ryan 7 weeks ago. This hobby/small business started when I attended a workshop in March this year where I learned how to arm knit and create a chunky knit blanket.

I enjoyed it so much that I bought some wool during the workshop and made another that night. Shortly after my son came to live with us (as we were going through the adoption journey) and whilst looking date him, I needed a hobby to help me relax and wind down after a busy day.

This led me onto looking at tutorials on how to hand crochet and thats how Knits by Ryan

Ryan Baker with his creations started. I mainly focus on the hand crochet now as I can control the stitches more and create much more items! I mainly knit in the evenings as I look after my son and this is just a hobby. A couple bits of advice for people wanting to do this is that I truly believe anyone can create a blanket like this. Time, patience and an open mind that you may not get it right every time. There are many times I have undone a blanket as I didn’t like the outcome but to remember that you are only human and it is handmade" "As this year comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the

warmth we create, not just with yarn, but with kindness. With that in mind, I wanted to give something meaningful back."

This Woman Runs - founded in Bristol in 2014 and previously known as This Mum Runs - is launching a new, more inclusive format of weekly walking and running sessions this January.

Designed for women with busy, real-life schedules, the sessions offer a simple way to move your body, find headspace and make new friends - with zero pressure or competition.

The new look sessions launch on Sunday 18 January at 8am and then continue weekly.

Today, TWR continues to build on those local roots by finding new ways to support women to be active - both in neighbourhood parks like Greville Smyth and through free, accessible programmes nationwide. By removing barriers such as cost, pressure and expectations, TWR creates welcoming spaces where women can chat, laugh, share challenges, celebrate achievements and build confidence together.

The new session structure is designed to be even more inclusive, giving women greater choice, flexibility and support so everyone can move at their own pace and feel confident taking part, whether they’re walking for

the first time or running regularly. It’s about community, movement and proving that when women feel they belong, amazing things happen.

Here are some of our priorities for the year ahead: We will respond to all feedback on the South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood; we’ve heard that changes are needed and that the community want to co-design Totterdown Square. We look forward to sharing the new, updated proposals with you in 2026.

We will continue to support the re-wilding project in Victoria Park, this is progressing fabulously, thanks to all those who have volunteered to date. We do believe that the new baby swings should be delivered in the first quarter of 2026, however, the landscaping and rotary swing are taking time, though we are hoping for this project we be implemented in the spring.

Also, in Victoria Park, we are working with the Parks Services to make sure that the bins get emptied regularly, this has gone slightly out of kilter due to some procurement issues, but we are on it, and a plan has been put in place.

We are equally as concerned about the development on Princess Street as we hear you are, with what would be South Bristol’s tallest building if given planning permission. Unfortunately, the Labour government’s reform of the planning system will make it harder for councils across the country to control this sort of unsympathetic and unwanted development.

Finally, we continue to knock on doors across Windmill Hill and Totterdown to hear directly from you all, however, if there is anything we can help you with please contact us by email.

I hope you have had a restful break. I’m starting 2026 with a list!

In the meantime, please do fill in this survey about East Street https://tinyurl.com/2stbmhde This has been developed in in response to concerns raised by residents about rising crime and anti-social behaviour. Ultimately, the hope is to create a resident-led Community Partnership, where local people take the lead, and agencies like the council and police work alongside them in support. Your responses will help shape priorities, strengthen funding bids, and ensure local voices lead the way.

As officers continue to analyse the 1000’s of responses to the South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood consultation, residents may have noticed that additional traffic monitoring is now underway across the area. Concerns have been raised about seasonal variations and temporary road closures or restrictions impacting on the data.

These interruptions and impacts on traffic flow are not new. Roads across the city experience diversions or partial closure year-round and will be part of the calculations, extensions to monitoring will consider where such closures have impacted data collection. It being the winter months is also taken into consideration, more traffic is seen during the darker, colder and wetter months – this is an annual cycle.

The new year will also see some air quality monitoring in key locations. These will include four sites on or close to Coronation Road and outside primary school locations. Air quality monitors are

measuring the levels of nitrogen dioxide in a total of 22 sites across the area.

Next steps for the SBLN process will involve a period of co-design in specific locations. There has been some misunderstanding regarding the recent consultation which has incorrectly been interpreted as that of the statutory consultation. The statutory consultation has yet to take place. It will be timetabled once the designs have been revised and discussed with local councillors following the recent engagement process.

The full business case will need to be approved by the Transport and Connectivity Committee but the final decision to approve the scheme will be that of the elected West of England Mayor not Bristol City Council and likely to be Autumn 2026. This is because the funds derive from the Department of Transport which has been allocated to the regional mayoral as part of the devolution settlement that are targeted at the region not specific local authority areas.

Christmas Theatre Round Up!! spontaneous standing ovations which makes everything worthwhile. I don’t do my job for the money. I’ve always done it for love and the love that we got in Bristol was fabulous particularly as it’s my local Theatre and I’ve never had a chance to work on that wonderful stage at The Hippodrome, so it was just a fantastic experience from every angle.

How did you spend your spare time while you were here?

Sooty and Sweep helping at a Food Bank What a busy season it’s been for the theatre!

WE ARE SO LUCKY in Bristol to have so many opportunities to watch a Christmas show to get us in the mood for festivities.

There was Treasure Island at The Bristol Old Vic which was fantastic, Rapunzel at The Brilliant Tobacco Factory Theatre which was as all their Christmas shows are - wonderful.

There’s also the Redgrave theatre showing Sleeping Beauty and of course the Bristol

Hippodrome with its star filled pantomime.

After a busy and fun-filled Christmas season the South Bristol Voice decided to have a catch up with Richard and his friends Sooty and Sweep, who performed at the hippodrome, before they head off home for some well deserved rest.

�NEWS FROM LOCAL COUNCILLORS Cam Hayward and Toby Wells Green councillors Knowle The new planning application for the Broadwalk redevelopment has now been submitted, and with a decision by the planning committee expected in February.

As a reminder, this is a variation of the existing planning permission that drastically reduces the proposed height and density on the Redcatch Park side of the development, although there would still be taller buildings by Wells Road. If the variation is granted then the developers will still need to submit a reserved matters application on the finer details, which will be another opportunity to have their say on what they want to see.

We know that many will be sad to see Broadwalk close. Many shops have already shut their doors whilst others are expected to close over the next few months.

Our priority as councillors is to

ensure continuity of service on vital services such as the pharmacy and library.

One such closure was the bingo hall in the Autumn. The owners have recently submitted a planning application to build a new bingo hall on Hartcliffe Way.

Bristol is our local theatre and as my career is very reliant on pantomime, I’m never normally at home for Christmas. Hence, we got to experience all the Christmas festivities and do our Christmas shopping in Cabot Circus and in the main town centre. We also also visited the Christmas market which was great fun, I loved it.

Sooty and Sweep went to the sliding rock and played on that for a while before they went for a wander in Ashton Court to see the deer!

Talking of Sooty and Sweep Do you and the boys get up to any mischief backstage?

Sweep is always playing pranks on us such as hiding my shoes, or putting Sooty’s wand in shaving foam!

I’ve always been a big fan of the Panto legend Andy Ford who has really struck a cord with Bristol Panto audiences and believe me he is as much fun off stage as he is on and we played lots of pranks on each other.

There is one moment in the show when I looked in the wings and he’d be doing something stupid different every day to try and make me laugh- most of the

time he did but it keeps the show fresh.

How did you celebrate Christmas this year?

I had an amazing Christmas this year. Even though I am 57 years old I managed against all the odds to start a family a couple years ago. As a result I have a 2 1/2-year-old boy who for the first time knows what Christmas is and understands it. I've also got a four month old baby son so it was wonderful to be at home for Christmas with all the family their tree and the trimmings.

If any of you people are lucky to be blessed with family, they know just how special it is. Even though I loved doing the pantomime nothing will ever eclipse the feeling of being with my family at Christmas time.

And Were sooty and Sweep with you at Christmas?

Not this year. Sooty, Sweep and Soo are now on a little holiday in the sun at the moment but I spoke with them and they are having a great time. Sweep apparently ate 8 plates of sausages on Christmas Day so was a little poorly but he is a very silly sausage so that made sense!

And finally - what will 2026 look like for you all?

Well it looks like it will be great fun! We have filmed a new TV series which we hope is finally going to get shown so that is exciting. Also I’m directing the new Sooty And Sweep theatre tour which is travelling all over the country that starts in February and then I’ll be planning for Panto. I don’t know where I’ll be. It would be wonderful to be back In Bristol again but I don’t get to make those decisions but fingers crossed!

�NEWS FROM BRISTOL SOUTH MP, KARIN SMYTH

A very Happy New year to everyone in Bristol South!

As regular readers will know, I have hosted an annual Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair in Hengrove throughout my time as a Member of Parliament and am delighted that the 2026 fair will be the tenth edition.

As Keir Starmer said in his speech to Labour Party Conference last year, too many people, like his father, feel disrespected and undervalued because they work with their hands. He talked about how being the “first in his family” to go to university meant he was put on a pedestal while the skilled and hugely valuable work, in care and in the trades, of other family members went under-appreciated.

I know that a lot of people in Bristol South feel the same. That is why I have always stood up for the value of apprenticeships. For many, an apprenticeship is the route to a skilled, rewarding and well-paid

career, yet despite warm words under the Conservatives, the number of people starting apprenticeships fell on their watch.

Most of my Jobs and Apprenticeship Fairs have been held while I was an opposition MP. Now we have a Labour government, and it is fantastic to reflect on the difference that this has made in so many areas but especially for apprenticeships and adult skills.

From the announcement at the Budget that the Government will fully fund apprenticeships for under 25s in small and medium sized businesses, to the £625 million invested into training for young engineers, electricians and carpenters, to the introduction of the South Bristol Youth Guarantee making sure that every young person is earning or learning, or the Government’s skills White Paper which will introduce new

V-Levels, vocational qualifications that will sit alongside A and T levels and give young people the tools to forge their own path and gain the skills that will help them get where they want to go.

I am also pleased that maintenance grants, abolished by the Tories, will return under this Government for selected courses, enabling people whose families’ can’t afford to foot the bill to get to university and on the path to a great career.

The South Bristol Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair will take place during National Apprenticeship Week on Thursday 12 February at the City of Bristol College South Bristol Skills Academy in Hengrove from 2:30pm-5:30pm.

Kids make the most of their freedom HAPPY New Year! I hope you are having a restful festive period.

Over the school holidays, Kids Go Free is back on the West’s buses.

This means under-16s can travel for nothing once again throughout Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire between December 20 and January 4.

No registration or bus pass is required - just hop on board.

This follows on from the success of our scheme over the summer, in partnership with local councils and bus operators.

More than 910,000 free journeys were taken by kids across our region, putting almost £1 million back into the pockets of families and opening up our region for more young people.

The summer scheme saw 32% more children travel by bus than did in summer 2024.

We saw more footfall at local visitor attractions and retail centres, and got new people onto

our brand-new green buses, inspiring the passengers of the future.

Almost half of the people in our sample survey said Kids Go Free had helped them visit new places they had not been to before, which would have otherwise been too costly.

December brought more good news on transport in the West. We secured over £40million for buses as we plan longer-term on how to invest in things like Kids Go Free in the future. This was another real vote of confidence in the West Country, as we continue working together on a bus network that works.

Since May, we’ve secured the best part of £1 billion for transport in our region – better buses, more trains, and mass transit plans – soon we will spell out our vision for how to get the West moving.

The end of the year also saw the West start to catch up with other regions.

Active Travel England now rates the West of England alongside

Greater Manchester and the West Midlands for better walking, wheeling, and cycling routes. We all know that active travel is good for our health and our planet, so it makes sense to make sustainable choices easier for people.

Our upgraded rating comes with £12 million for us to add to the green cycle lanes in South Gloucestershire, safe crossings like the one opened by Ralph Allen School in Bath in October and work progressing to improve Victoria Street in Bristol, linking town to Temple Meads.

December also saw the publication of the child poverty action plan for the region I mentioned in last month’s column, after a welcome national strategy and November’s Budget decision to scrap the two-child benefit cap.

The majority of children affected are in working households, and our area is expected to be more than £20 million better off as a result.

Lifting kids out of poverty is a key part of our new Growth

Metro Mayor Helen Godwin writes for the Voice Strategy, which aims to secure the investment needed to create 72,000 new jobs in the region.

Together, we’ve turned the page and are writing a new chapter for the West of England.

I’m optimistic for what 2026 can bring, and determined to make a difference local people can see and feel, including on child poverty, economic investment, and transport.

With your support, we have made a vital difference to the thousands of dogs who needed our help.

The pressure on the animal welfare sector continues, and this year, we received more than 40,000 enquiries from owners who felt they had no choice but to give up their dog. As a dog owner myself, I know how devastating a decision like that can be, which is why we do all we can to keep dogs and their owners together, including providing support to thousands of dog owners through our Behaviour Support Line.

Despite the challenges, we have also seen incredible kindness from our nation of dog lovers. With your help, almost 10,000 dogs of all ages and breeds found new homes, including 440 puppies born in our care. Throughout their stay, our dedicated staff ensured every dog was safe, comfortable and loved.

We are very grateful to our incredible volunteers, whose time and dedication make all the difference, whether through fostering, dog walking, administrative support, or inspiring fundraising efforts. And of course, our sincere thanks go to everyone who has donated to Dogs Trust. As an organisation funded entirely by the generosity of our supporters, we simply couldn’t do this work without you.

Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust Launches £40,000 Appeal to Restore Historic Victorian Entrance Gates Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust, a registered charity preserving Bristol’s historic cemetery, has launched a £40,000 appeal to restore the Grade II* listed Victorian gates on Bath Road, an entrance that has welcomed families, mourners, and visitors since 1839.

AFTER NEARLY TWO CENTURIES of daily use, allowing around 53,000 vehicles through annually, the gates’ sliding mechanism has failed.

One side has been removed for safety, and without urgent restoration, this historic entrance, and the security of the cemetery, is at risk.

Commissioned by architect Charles Underwood and manufactured by Messrs Room, Grazebrook and Co., the Bath Road gates are one of the cemetery’s defining historic features. As well as serving as the main vehicular entrance, they

play a crucial role in site security and access management.

Specialist restoration will include repairing the sliding mechanism, chain, relaying Victorian stone both sides of the runner, and carefully sanding down and repainting the ironwork by hand.

In the 1990s, when Arnos Vale Cemetery faced closure, the gates became the rallying point for local residents campaigning to save public access. Their successful efforts helped protect the cemetery’s future.

“These gates are beautiful examples of Victorian ironwork and a central part of Arnos Vale’s story,” said Ann Fiddler, CEO of Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust. “As an independent charity with no council or Government funding, we rely entirely on public support to conserve this beautiful, free, and peaceful green space full of nature and history. We’re asking our community to help protect this heritage asset so the gates - and the history they represent - can continue to welcome everyone.

They symbolise the power of local people coming together to safeguard something precious, and we hope that same community spirit will once again rally to save them.”

Friends of Arnos Vale have also pledged £4,000, giving us a total of £7,600 so far - but there is still a long way to go to reach the £40,000 needed. Every donation helps ensure that Arnos Vale Cemetery remains a free, accessible, and beautiful heritage site for all.

Why Early Theatre Experiences Matter The lights have come down on pantomime season, the decorations are packed away, and children are back in their classrooms after the excitement of Christmas. January can feel dull so it is perhaps one of the best times to think about drama and theatre, especially for young people.

FOR MANY CHILDREN, Christmas may have included being in a school show or going to see a pantomime. That excitement of watching or being part of a live performance often sparks a new curiosity about theatre. While drama is not currently part of the primary school curriculum opportunities to experience and take part in theatre are more important than ever.

One of the most immediate benefits of drama is confidence.

Theatre allows children to step into someone else’s shoes, speak aloud and be seen and heard in a supportive environment. This can be a thrilling opportunity for some or a gradual process of finding their own voice for

others. Either way, those moments of standing up, speaking out and being listened to can have a lasting impact far beyond the stage, influencing how children present themselves in school and in everyday life.

January is a particularly good time for drama because it offers an antidote to winter sluggishness. The darker months can leave children feeling low on energy, but drama brings movement, imagination, games, storytelling and physical play to get bodies moving and minds engaged.

There is also a strong social element. Drama is about working together. Drama games and exercises encourage

listening, turn-taking, empathy and teamwork - skills that are just as important in the playground and classroom as they are on stage. Creating something together, even something small, can be exciting and hugely empowering.

Beyond individual development, early theatre experiences play a crucial role in audience development.

Children who grow up watching and making theatre are far more likely to value it as adults. They learn how to be an audience, how to respond to live performance and how theatre feels different from a screen.

Today’s drama club attendee is tomorrow’s theatre-goer,

volunteer, supporter or artist.

Theatre does not have to begin in grand buildings. It often starts in school halls, classrooms and community spaces, shaped by local stories and familiar faces. These early experiences help keep theatre rooted in the community and ensure it remains accessible to everyone. As the year begins, January offers a valuable opportunity to plant those seeds and nurture confident individuals, connected communities and a lifelong relationship with live performance.

Since that meeting we have organised an Art Exhibition, a Film Afternoon aimed at the younger members of our community and taken part in the South Bristol Arts Trail. We have moved fast but there is still a lot to do and we have realised that we cannot do it alone.

Do you want to help people who have had a stroke?

We are in need of volunteers to help at our stroke support group in Bedminster every Thursday morning 10 – 1pm @ St Monica Wills House, Cromwell Road, Bedminster, BS3 3NH. Every year 950 people in Bristol and South Glos will experience a stroke: people of all ages…and from all backgrounds. Bristol After Stroke is the local charity that helps those people get their lives back on track – though our groups, activities, mentoring, counselling and so much more. Our volunteers do a variety of things each week from helping with the room set up, serving hot drinks and supporting the activities that are planned eg music, poetry or seated exercise sessions like Yoga or Zumba.

The most important part of the role of the volunteer though is to talk to group members, encourage them to get involved and generally help to promote a supportive, happy atmosphere that contributes to a sense of wellbeing.
