Local Volunteer Honoured in Special Award Ceremony

Volunteers are the lifeblood of all community green spaces, and if you’ve ever strolled through Redcatch Park, chances are you’ve seen Karen Rich.

Usually armed with a litter picker, a rubbish bag, a pouch of dog treats, and her trademark beaming smile. For the past nine years, Karen has quietly and faithfully helped keep the park clean and welcoming for all who use it.
Now, her dedication has been formally recognised. At a special, intimate ceremony held in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour at City Hall on Thursday 31st July, Karen was awarded the prestigious Lord Mayor’s Medal by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Henry Michallat. Surrounded by close family and friends, Karen was warmly thanked for her volunteer work and her remarkable community spirit. In his speech, the Lord Mayor praised Karen’s “kindness, compassion and tireless work” for Redcatch Park, stating that her contribution deserved
recognition. He offered thanks “on behalf of the city and county of Bristol – for all you’ve done and all you continue to do.” Karen, ever modest, said she was “delighted” to receive the award — she’s definitely not one to chase the limelight. But her family were glad and proud to see her honoured in this way. After the formalities, the group enjoyed tea and cake as the Lord Mayor spent time chatting with Karen and her family. He even gave them a tour
of the Council Chamber, invited Karen to sit in the Lord Mayor’s chair, and — in a moment that raised a few smiles — let her try on his ceremonial tricorn hat for a photo. It was a heart warming reminder of the rarely seen human side of civic life. For those who know Karen, the recognition couldn’t be more timely — or more deserved. Her quiet presence in the park is a daily reminder of what makes local green spaces truly special: passionate people who care. Whether she’s picking up litter, being greeted by a stream of four-legged friends (who all know she never forgets treats), or exchanging a kind word with a passer-by, Karen has become part of the very fabric of Redcatch Park. She truly embodies its heart. We’re sure she’ll be back in the park soon — litter picker in one hand, dog treats in the other, and that same bright smile that’s brought joy to our community for nearly a decade.

Have your say! Action Greater Bedminster, (AGB), the local neighbourhood group, will be helping local people to have their say as Bristol City Council explores development of the South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood Project. AGB WILL BE ARRANGING drop-in sessions, where the Council will share proposals based on the findings of 2024's initial engagement, during September and October at various accessible community venues in BS3. AGB aims to make a positive impact in the BS3 postcode area by actively raising awareness of important local initiatives. Serving as the community partner in this project, AGB will not hold any influence on decision-making. However, AGB will support the engagement stage to be open, diverse, inclusive, and welcoming and encourage residents and local traders to have their say. Drop-in locations and times - Page 3
