AWVC’s Parade Plans Look Great – Really Great!

by Rick Winterson Last Tuesday evening, at the McDonough Post on West Broadway, sixteen (16) members of the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council (the AWVC) met to map out final plans for the 117th Annual St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade. Please remember that number “16” – it’s important.

A week ago (March 02, page 13), South Boston Online published an article about the Mummers from Philadelphia, who’ll be joining our Parade this year – one of the most prominent marching groups in the whole world. Rink Rededication Beautifully Undertaken

Tian Guo, a 200-piece Chinese Band, is also marching – their precision march techniques are unforgettable. The Centaurus High School Band from Colorado will join the Warriors Marching Band from Maryland in delighting the Parade’s spectators. And that just skims the surface – 12 other marching bands from around the country and 10 pipe bands will keep your toes tapping.

We mentioned the importance of the “16” AWVC members above. Do you believe that the entire St. Patrick’s/ Evacuation Day Parade is organized and presented by those AWVC members, along with the Parade volunteers whose help is so valuable. Well, it is.

They also came to witness the revealing of the new memorial plaque

and to pay tribute to a fallen hero. A fallen hero who served his country in the United States Marines in World War II, served his community as a Boston Firefighter, and then unselfishly paid the ultimate price when he died in a fire in the line of duty.

South Boston’s Fallen Heroes: Part Three South Boston Online has been publishing the names of soldiers from South Boston who were Killed in Action during World War I, which the U.S. entered on April 6, 1917 – almost exactly 100 years ago. OutVets Denied Participation in 2017 Parade

by Rick Winterson You have likely heard that some individuals have changed their minds, and have canceled their commitments to take part in the 2017 St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade on March 19.

Their reason for boycotting the 2017 Parade was the decision by the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council not to let the OutVets group join the Parade this year.

Members of the Allied War Veterans stated that the OutVets group submitted their Parade application late. The deadline is February 15; the OutVets themselves submitted their application on time last year and were admitted to the 2016 Parade.

This year, the OutVets Parade application arrived late in February; in addition, there had been some violations of Parade rules in the past two Parades. At the Allied War Veterans Council meeting Tuesday evening, the Council members voted not to make an exception to the rules, or to waive the February 15 deadline. As a result, the OutVets were denied permission to march in the Parade this year.

In any event, the 2017 Parade will go on as scheduled.

The veterans denied their right to march have sacrificed as much for our liberty as every other veteran on that council.

I already have spoken to Bryan Bishop, Founder and Executive Officer of OUTVETS, and several other members, including Alex Oneto, John Affuso and Dan Forrester, to thank them for their service and sacrifice to this country, and to express my full support.

With everything that is happening in this country right now, we need to focus on renewing unity and not legitimizing hate. To that end, I will always do everything I can to make sure that nothing less than full inclusiveness, equality and respect is the standard.”

is the third-largest Parade in America, and it gets larger each year. Right now, it’s the biggest Parade in New England, and the largest one-day event in all of Massachusetts.

This has been, and still is, accomplished by the AWVC and its many volunteers – no grants, all privately funded, and completely the result of the work and support of dedicated South Boston volunteers.

Which brings up the need for local funding.

Unions, businesses, individuals, and non-profit groups have all contributed to funding the 2017 Parade so far. To keep this South Boston tradition alive, the AWVC is holding a fundraising event they call “The Bring a Buck Program”.

During the Parade on Sunday, the 19th, veterans will walk by you. When you see them, please consider giving them a “Buck”, just a Buck – if every spectator gives $1.00, the funds will be all set for the next Parade in 2018. If you are watching the Parade inside somewhere, please make an online crowdfunding donation: Simply log onto southbostonparade.org, and then press the “DONATIONS” prompt.

has been altered in two keys ways. However, not to worry – the snows of 2015 won’t repeat themselves in 2017.

The 2017 Parade will proceed up West Broadway and East Broadway as always, stepping off across from Broadway Station promptly at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, March 19. Its total length of march will be a bit over three miles.

All 130+ units will pass any given viewing point in something over one hour, ending at Dorchester Street/Old Colony/ the Circle at 4 p.m. or so.

Ending the Parade at the Old Colony Circle makes sense.

Andrew Square, the single busiest intersection in South Boston and the Parade’s dispersal point in recent years, has become severely overcrowded.

Emergency vehicles can’t get through. Bus service comes to a standstill, which really isn’t fair to “T” passengers if there’s a viable alternate dispersal point.

The other Parade route change involves turning up Sixth Street to head for the Heights after the left turn by the Firehouse at K and Fourth. Then, the Parade will proceed along the north curve around Thomas Park and down to Dorchester Street.

Massachusetts Environmental Secretary, Matthew Beaton, Representative Nick Collins, Boston City Counselors Michael Flaherty and Billy Linehan, Boston Police Commissioner William “Billy” Evans, Boston Fire Commissioner, Joseph Finn, and former mayor of Boston, Raymond L. Flynn as well as former fire commissioner Paul Christian were present to honor the memory of a man who made serving others a priority in his life.

The Boston Honor Guard stood at attention and the BFD singing foursome sang an inspirational song.

Father Robert Casey was also present, said a prayer and briefly spoke warmly embracing the moment.

Congressman Lynch aptly quoted an unknown author by saying “Loyalty is the simple act of remembrance.” and we all know that South Boston is loyal to their sons and daughters who deserve to be recognized for their altruistic deeds in their lives. And Francis L. Murphy was such a man.

Representative Nick Collins and Senator Linda Dorcena Forry (who stated that Frank Murphy will be forever remembered) worked tirelessly to see that monies were appropriated to fund the needed renovations.

Governor Baker applauded the recent renovations which were completed at the rink last year and Mayor Walsh noted how important the rink is to the community.

“This rink is important to this neighborhood,” the mayor said. “Many kids have played here and there’s a great history here of kids going on to play in high school, college, and even the NHL. This is a great tribute to Francis L. Murphy…an important reminder for us by remembering

the life of a public servant who also served his country. It proves we never forget our heroes. Southie understands that and will never forget that.”

Bob Ferrara from the Department of Conservation (DCR) spearheaded the rededication endeavor with Teddy Cunniff and Tommy McGrath.

“Francis L. Murphy’s family should be extremely proud of the way in which he dedicated his life in service of the way in which he dedicated his life in the service of others,” wrote Bob Ferrara on Facebook. “…as a United States Marine…a Boston Firefighter…a hockey coach…and mentor for many kids in the South Boston community.

Hopefully his life will be an example for future generations to follow!!!”

Lifelong South Boston community activist Edward “Eddie” Flynn was also in attendance, and being a Navy veteran, appreciates the sacrifices Francis L. Murphy made for his country and to the community.

“The rededication of thee Francis Murphy hockey rink is an awesome tribute to someone who dedicated his life to others,” said Flynn. “Through

his service as a United States Marine in World War II and his service as a proud Boston Firefighter, Francis Murphy gave his life in service others. A member of the Greatest Generation, this hero will always be remembered for his bravery, compassion, love of country and our neighborhood. He is a true American hero and will never be forgotten.”

Local hockey guru, Teddy Cunniff, had nothing but praise for the man being honored on this occasion.

“I’m honored to be here to honor Frank Murphy,” said Teddy Cunniff, local hockey legend. “He was a true Southie guy who encouraged us to play hockey. He was like a fatherfigure to me and my (late) brother John. He was a grass-roots coach… an inspiration…and I will always be grateful to this wonderful man.”

During the ceremonies, the BFD’s hockey squad battled it out with their counterparts in the BPD, and then the Boston Latin girls’ varsity hockey team defeated Haverhill, 4-1, in an MIAA state tournament tilt.

by Rick Winterson The 2017 Parade Chief Marshal’s Banquet last Sunday was a sold-out feast and a tribute to American veterans and their heroism, as well as a wonderful party that is a big part of the South Boston “Season”. After all, what else could one call it? It’s a “Season” that simultaneously memorializes our veterans, St. Patrick’s

Parade Chief Marshal Dan Magoon, Ed “Butch” Shifflett and his wife Jean, and the entire band of South Boston’s Allied War Veterans Council commanded by Bill Desmond deserve much gratitude for the success of this year’s Banquet. The corned-beef-and-cabbage was lean and perfectly prepared. In addition to potatoes, other root veggies included beets, carrots, and turnips. The Irish soda bread was perfect – plenty of raisins but not a trace of caraway. So there! And as yet another symbol of America’s melting pot, the Banquet was prepared by an Italian caterer.

The Banquet is a traditional event sponsored by the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council (the AWVC).

In part, it is a fundraiser for the Parade, which the AWVC presents every year to South Boston and the world. It is well worth noting that the Parade,

even though it’s one of the largest and most well-attended in America, is the work of a small, 13-member group – the AWVC - aided by numerous local volunteers. There are no grants, bureaucracies, or other outside assistance; the preliminary work is all voluntary and takes place entirely within South Boston’s borders.

The Banquet began at 1 p.m. The head table’s guests were called to order

by Ed Shifflett and took their seats.

A blessing was asked by Fr. Steve Zukas, the Chaplain of the AWVC. Fr. Steve was recently the Pastor of St. Peter Parish. A festive corned-beefand-cabbage feast was then served.

The program began with Mayor Marty Walsh, who recognized the role of the armed forces and its veterans in the U.S., going back to the first Evacuation Day in 1776, Gen. George Washington’s first victory.

He presented Parade Chief Marshal Dan Magoon with a City of Boston citation. Congressman Steve Lynch recognized the contingent of sailors from the USS Constitution, pointing out that military service is often motivated by knowing or being related

to another veteran. Steve presented Dan Magoon with a flag flown over the Capitol building in Washington.

Rep. Nick Collins complimented Tim Duross’s efforts as Parade Organizer, and presented Chief Marshal Dan with a Massachusetts Certificate of Recognition. AWVC Commander Bill Desmond, Ed Flynn, Tom McGrath (Citizens’ Association President), and Tim Duross all saluted the veterans present and promised a really great 2017 Parade.

The featured speaker at the Banquet was M. Sgt. Greg Kelly. Sgt. Kelly gave a stirring account of his tour in Afghanistan, delivering his remarks in a matter-of-fact way that was very realistic. For a few minutes, all of those at the Banquet were with Kelly in Helmand, besieged by the Taliban. Kelly said that the hardest thing was being away from his family. The Sergeant talked of the bravery of one of his comrades – “He took a piece of shrapnel in his arm, but he didn’t care. He was OK; he was just _____ off!” Parade Chief Marshal Dan Magoon closed out the program by expressing his gratitude for being appointed Chief Marshal.

SB Catholic Academy Science Showcase Highlights

The students at South Boston Catholic Academy recently displayed their academic excellence through a Science Showcase presented in the gym. Students in grades K2-6 each presented a specific project to highlight what they have been learning in the classrooms. Grades K2 and 1 presented their coding skills both by coding one another as well as through the use of the iPad app Scratch Jr. (an app developed by MIT). Grade 2 created and coded Robots using Lego Robotics.

Grade 3 displayed their collaborative work with Museum of Science through a parachute project where students demonstrated understanding of measurement, drag, and the engineering design process. Grade 4 shared their work on habitats. In this project, students used the engineering and design process to create habitats using everyday items. They then designed a model to help protect their habitat.

Students in Grade 5 shared creative ways to solve everyday problems through their annual “Invention Convention.” Students learned the basic steps of the engineering/design process and used several simple machines to create their final product. Students in 6th grade shared their recent work at MIT as well as completed a NASA STEM chal-

lenge where they developed their own model space crafts. Students in Grade 6 were additionally excited to share their Utopia projects, which had both science and technology components. Additionally, the students shared some of their initial work using the school’s new 3D printer.

SBCA Shamrock Award to Patty Cloherty

South Boston Citizens’ Association president Tom McGrath has announced the Association’s 2017 recipients of the James M. “Jimmy” Kelly/Margaret“Peggy” Flaherty Shamrock Award for Community Service.

The 2017 Shamrock Award will be presented to Patty Cloherty, for her selfless efforts in aiding those in need, and pitching in at the drop of a hat, for any benefit or worthy cause in and around the town.

John Provenzano Exhibits at Medicine Wheel Gallery at Medicine Wheel, 110 K Street, second floor. An enthusiastic crowd showed up.

by Rick Winterson John Provenzano is a local artist. His studio is in the King Terminal between L and K Streets, along First Street.

He creates large, salon-sized paintings in a semi-abstract mode. His colors are bright, and he uses iconics from social media. His creations combine thoughts about his works of art along with the emotional reaction that accompany their viewing. He talks about “taking out everything that isn’t needed” as he composes his works.

Last weekend, John held a receptio0n for his latest show, which was held in the Spoke

Most of John’s works are quite large – salon sized is the term, reflecting on the market for such spacey paintings. In putting together his paintings, he refers to painting them to achieve a layered effect (see “One-Two” in particular). Sometimes, this involves literally pasting in layers of images that are on paper, so many of his works could be considered to be collages of a sort. If certain of John’s paintings seem to have a familiar ring to them, look closely and you’ll see President Obama’s face and large barcodes in the midst of colorful abstraction.

John attended Boston University’s School of Fine Arts, where he received his Master’s degree in Fine Arts. He has worked and studied with John Wilson, the sculptor of the famous Martin Luther King, Jr. statue.

He has taught Visual Arts at the Boston Renaissance Charter School for the last 20 years, also serving as a Mentor there.

He’s active in the South Boston arts scene, as a co-founder of the First Street Collaborative

Meet an Amazing Young Boy

competed in state championships, loves the rings and parallel bars, and can do seven back hand springs in a row.

He doesn’t have any down time. If he’s not reading or doing his homework, he’s busy with sports, outside activities, ballet, or music lessons. His name is Jared Frith.

Jared, 11, is the son of Amy Frith and Howard Fields. His two grandparents are Barbara and Charlie Frith. He has two rabbits, Matilda and Lilly.

Jared is in the fifth grade at the Oliver Hazard Perry School in South Boston. The school’s focus is to “provide opportunities for students to explain their thinking with evidence-based oral and written responses” allowing them to “develop critical thinking skills needed for high school and college.”

Jared’s on the Honor Roll and his favorite subject is math.

His favorite color is orange.

His favorite foods are Artichokes and Mexican food. His

Jared has been taking piano lessons since he was four years old and just began taking cello lessons. He has been active in local theatre plays produced by the Fourth Presbyterian Church located on Dorchester Street in Southie. He started when he was only five years old. He played the character Shrek and the character Jack Kelly in Newsies. He also appeared in the play Godspell as well as several other plays.

favorite books are the “Harry Potter” books written by British author, J.K. Rowling, and “Anne of Green Gables” written by Canadian author, Lucy Maud Montgomery. His favorite movie is Eragon, a mythical story about a boy who rides dragons to battle evil.

And, his favorite athlete is Michael Phelps, an American swimming Olympian and the most celebrated in the history of the Olympic Games.

Jared loves to swim and began taking swimming lessons at the Boston Athletic Club (BAC) when he was five years old. He currently swims for the Marlins swim team in the USA swimming circuit. He practices at the UMass pool on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays before school, and on Saturday mornings. His favorite events are the butterfly and the IM. “I like swimming,” he said. “Takes a lot of energy and helps me focus before school. I like to concentrate on technique because technique comes before speed.”

Jared has been active in the South Boston Youth Soccer League since before he could tie his own cleats and likes playing because it helps him with his coordination. He has played in the South Boston Little League beginning on the tee-ball circuit and enjoys throwing and hitting the ball. He has a yellow belt in Karate and took lessons at the Ultimate Self-Defense and Performance Center for four years. For the past three years, he has taken gymnastic lessons at the Ellis School of Gymnastics in Braintree. He

Jared has taken ballet lessons the last two years at City Dance and has just been awarded a full scholarship to attend the Boston Ballet’s prestigious summer dance program. His fellow ballet dancers nicknamed him “Hercules” because of his nimbleness and accomplishments. He feels that ballet helps him when playing sports.

“I think I can jump higher in basketball because of my ballet (training),” Jared said. “I can run faster in soccer and it makes me quicker and more agile.”

When he’s not busy with all of these activities, Jared enjoys playing outside of his house, riding his bike, rollerblading, skateboarding, stretching, and playing tag football with his pals.

His mom and dad keep him busy and are proud of his accomplishments in and out of school.

“He’s very driven,” his mom said. “He doesn’t have to be told to focus on sports or school. He’s decisive and funnels his energy well. He’s really a good person…well-mannered and helpful to others.

“He doesn’t know limits,” she added. “Jared pushes himself in sports and his academics. Once he decides to do something he doesn’t stop until he accomplishes it. He blows my mind. I hope he can do this…maintain this discipline for the rest of his life.”

Bantam “A” Hockey Team Wins State Championship Shock powerhouse Knights in finale

By Kevin Devlin On Sunday, March 5, in Springfield, the South Boston Bantam A hockey team defeated the Nonotuck Knights from Western Massachusetts, 6-4, to capture the 2017 Massachusetts Hockey state championship.

Joey Burke who scored a hat trick in the championship finale was SBOL’s MVP for the title game.

In the opening round on Friday, March 3, Southie looked lost in the opening minutes of the game against Greater Lowell and found themselves in a hole, 3-0.

The local squad woke up and scored five unanswered goals and won the game, 5-3. Joe Burke, Aidan Young, and Cole Askew had a goal apiece while Eddie Murray contributed two goals in the come-from-behind victory. In the second game on Saturday morning, March 4, Southie got trounced, 7-0, by the Nonotuck Knights.

The third game was played later on Saturday against Dedham, and as Coach Joe Burke stated, it was do or die for Southie if they wanted to remain in contention for the title. Southie came out gunning and scored three goals in the first three minutes of the game. Heading into the second period, Southie led 3-2 but held on to win the tilt, 5-3. Peter Gailunas, Askew, Will Ahern, Murray, and Cormac Lafferty all registered goals while Burke, Murray, and Young each had an assist, while Collin Farrell and Murray had two assists apiece.

The championship finale was played on Sunday. The local squad had to square off against the Knights again, a powerhouse team boast-

ing a 20-4 regular season league record, and a team that had already scored nineteen goals in the tournament, seven of them against Southie.

Southie drew first blood in the first period when Burke scored. Four minutes into the second period, the Knights responded with a score to tie it up, 1-1, but Burke stuck again about thirty seconds later to give Southie a 2-1 lead. He was assisted on that goal by Askew and Farrell. Approximately forty-five seconds later, Burke passed the puck to Farrell who sailed it past the goalie to take a 3-1 advantage. The Knights subsequently scored and it was 3-2 heading into the final frame.

Nineteen seconds into the third period, Murray scored, assisted by Young, giving Southie that much needed insurance goal, 4-2. Farrell, assisted by Murray, then beat the goalie and Southie led, 5-2.

With 3:04 on the game clock, the Knights fought back and scored, making it 5-3. The Knights subsequently pulled their goalie and scored again.

It was nail-biting time for sure.

The score was now 5-4, but Burke, with fifty-two seconds left in regulation play, and assisted by Lafferty and Nolan Zdanavge, struck pay dirt once again, giving Southie a 6-4 lead and the championship.

The Bantam A players are: William Ahern, Cole Askew, Aidan Young, Joe Burke, Declan Callahan, Lauren Cloherty, Collin Farrell, Peter Gailunas, Cormac Lafferty, Evan Markos, Eddie Murray, Kevin Watts, and Nolan Zdanavge. The head coach is Joe Burke, ably assisted by Mike Murray and Billy Ahern.

“We were able to get a second look at the Knights playing against Greater Lowell before the championship game,” Coach Burke said. “Greater

Lowell was fore-checking and dumping the puck. We felt we were able to identify some of the Knights weaknesses…or perhaps how to counter their size and speed by jamming the boards and shutting the middle down. We talked to the kids before the game and told them we needed to slow them down.

They listened. And it worked.

“Everyone came to play,” he added. “Kevin Watts, our goalie, was terrific. The Knights couldn’t believe what happened but their coach came over and told us we shut down his team and we came to play.”

By Kevin Devlin On Friday evening, March 3, at Saint Agatha’s gym in Milton, the Saint Ann’s of Dorchester CYO boys’ intermediate basketball team defeated Saint Thomas of Braintree, 65-41, to capture the 2017 CYO Vicariate Championship.

Midway through the first half, Saint Ann’s went on a 20-3 run and led by eighteen at the half, 34-16. Coach Mike Doyle, originally from Southie and an accomplished athlete, had his team firing on all cylinders. His team came out focused in the second half and went on an early 6-0 lead to increase their lead to twentyfour points. They play together and are fundamentally sound players.

Kings took on the Maple Leafs in the first game. The Kings came out strong and had a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period. The Leafs fought back but could not score due to the strong goaltending of the Kings. The Kings took the victory by the score of 5-0. Ryan Alexander played a strong game for the Kings scoring 4 goals.

In the following game the Minnesota Wild came out on top, taking the win against the Penguins. Greg Matthews and Andrew Missett played a strong game for the Penguins, scoring a goal apiece. Liam Long was superb for the Wild scoring 5 goals, leading his team to victory.

Instructional Basketball The 5-7 year old instructional basketball is going strong. With over 40 participants the boys and girls are improving every week on their skills. Last week we focused on passing and shooting fundamentals. Stars of the week were Matthew Stapleton, Grace Joyce, Aidan Hartman, Brian Goodman, Corey Radzik and Norah Mullen.

8-11 Boys and Girls Youth Basketball League We are in the process of planning our Spring Youth Basketball League. Registration will be held on Thursday for anyone interested. We will conduct a 2week scrimmage/clinic and pick teams to begin the league on March 23rd. Games will be played on Thursday afternoons.
