SBCA Evacuation Banquet a Solid Sold-Out Success

The South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA) is the oldest, continuously functioning community group in the nation – 137 years to be exact. And the SBCA’s 137th Annual Evacuation Day Banquet was held on Evacuation Day itself – last Friday evening, March 17, in the Convention Center. Your SBCA hosts were President Tom McGrath, emcee Councilor Michael Flaherty, and the SBCA 2017 General Chair Ed Flynn. The entire evening was one of laughter, fitting sentiments, standing ovations, and well-deserved recognition of those who serve us.

Patty Cloherty, Dedham Clerk Magistrate Sal Paterna, and Maura Doyle, Clerk of the Supreme Judicial Court, received the SBCA’s Peg Flaherty/Jimmy Kelly Shamrock Award, the John W. McCormack Public Service Award , and the SBCA’s Presidents Award, respectively – all three of them very well-deserved. Curragh’s Fancy played Irish numbers (of course). The crowd jumped to their feet as the head table took their places to the strains of “Southie Is My Home Town”. The Banquet is also a kind of joke-telling night, in preparation for the St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast on the morning of Parade Day. As a raconteur, Maura Doyle is hard to beat. Her edgy wit was a huge hit with the Banquet crowd.

And perhaps the funniest (but true) anecdote was told by Gov. Charlie Baker. It was about a “bystander” who thought Baker was actually Roger Goodell – in Boston, yet. The evening concluded with a round of Irish songs rendered by Curragh’s Fancy, Michael Flaherty, and Tom McGrath.

Our Transportation Plan: Go Boston 2030

On any given day at any given time, I can look outside my window at City Hall and see our streets alive and bustling. From tourists crossing the street to Faneuil Hall to the cars waiting at the intersection, the Government Center T-stop in City Hall Plaza and the bicyclists taking advantage of nice weather, Boston is filled with residents and visitors traveling from Point A to Point B. We are a growing and thriving city -and that’s evident by the many that occupy our streets each day.

So after months of planning, thousands of residents’ input and ideas, and a long look at Boston’s future, I am proud that this month we released a transportation plan for our City: Go Boston 2030. This plan looks ahead to the Boston we will experience just a few short years from now, and begins to plan for decades in the future.

Go Boston 2030 is a plan made up of 58 different transportation projects and policies that focus on the expansion and connection of transportation options, the improvement of traffic-related safety

on our streets, and efforts to increase the reliability of our system as a whole for our residents, commuters and visitors.

This plan will touch the lives of all Bostonians, and I want to thank the many, many residents who attended community meetings, shared their questions and ideas, and guided the future of our City. 5,000 ideas were submitted to the City in just the first round of our public engagement process, and in the next round, we received an additional 3,500 policy and project ideas. All together, nearly 4,000 Boston residents and others helped to prioritize the planning process by voting on their key wishes for transportation in Boston.

Through this engagement process, three priorities rose to the top: access, reliability and safety. For access, that means our goal in 2030 is to have every home in Boston be within a ten minute walk of a rail station or key bus route, a Hubway station and a car share. For reliability, that means we’re working towards decreasing average work commute times by ten percent. For safety, that means eliminating traffic fatalities in Boston, and ensuring all house-

Go Boston 2030 also ties into our larger, broader strategy as a City, called Imagine Boston 2030, which is a Citywide plan to knit together diverse planning efforts, public engagement and feedback, and City priorities to guide Boston into 2030 and beyond.

The Go Boston 2030 Vision and Action plan is a blueprint for how the City will direct and coordinate funding between the local, state and federal levels.

We’re committing to a five-year investment plan to jumpstart our policies and projects, and plan to leverage City funding to attract state funding through the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization.

We know transportation doesn’t happen in a bubble.

Bringing transportation into the future doesn’t just mean making upgrades -- it means changing how we think about getting around in our City, like connecting residents from Mattapan and Southwest Dorchester to jobs and medical care in Roxbury, Mission Hill and the Longwood Medical and academic area.

Go Boston 2030 also reflects our traditions as a smart, innovative City: we’ve begun installing smart signal corridors and districts that have traffic lights

This plan wouldn’t have been possible without the residents that helped shape it -- and we’re still looking for your input. We want to hear from you. What’s working? What’s not? What do you want to see more of?

The public input process will continue through the implementation of individual projects, and in the development of more projects and policies to be planned at a local level. I invite you to join us in planning for our City’s future, and making it easier, safer and more equitable to travel around our great City.

A news item – this year, the two awards that are conferred annually by the South Boston Neighborhood House have been named, and well-named at that. The award that goes to “Champions” of the Neighborhood House has been formally named “The Joseph ‘Dodo’ Nee Champion Award”; the award to Neighborhood House “Angels” is now named “The Amy K. Murray Angel Award”. For all of their adult lives, both Amy and Joe were truly devoted supporters of the South Boston Neighborhood House and its ideals.

The recipients of the 2017 Champion Award are the four Nee family members themselves – Susan, Brian, Kelly, and Kristin (the Nees have always supported the Neighborhood House; Brian is serving on this year’s Event Committee). Perhaps most of all, the Nee family deserves recognition for “sharing” Joe “Dodo” Nee. Dodo and his non-stop community efforts were one of South Boston’s most well-known secrets.

His loving and supportive family backed these efforts completely.

The recipient of the 2017 Amy K. Murray Angel Award is – most fittingly - Arthur G. Murray, Amy’s

Dad. This is another heartwarming case of a family sharing one of their members, who is involved in important community work.

In Amy’s case, it was her daily work on the many Neighborhood House programs. After Amy sadly left us, Arthur continued to be a Neighborhood House booster, often bringing his own colleagues by, to acquaint them with the agency’s mission and accomplishments. Words like “generous” and “involved” typify Arthur Murray’s ongoing interest, as well as his dedication to “the Ollie”.

It’s fair to ask for specifics about how funds raised during a benefit are used. One example “the Ollie” can point to is setting up a kind of local emergency fund, which they are calling “Dodo’s Dollars”. Now and then, families can use a helping hand in hard times, when one of the wage earners gets laid off.

Sometimes, small, simple needs arise, such as getting students haircuts and a few school clothes when the summer is over. That’s the sort of thing the South Boston Neighborhood House – “the Ollie” – is all about.So, please reserve Friday evening, April 7. See you there.

by Rick Winterson On March 17, 1776, 241 years ago, the British left Boston and its Harbor forever, an event that came to be known as Evacuation Day. This was one of the most critical days in American history. It was Gen. George Washington’s first victory in the Revolutionary War and a major step toward American independence. Last Friday, March 17, the South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA), led by SBCA President Tom McGrath, once again made sure that day was observed as it should be.

The SBCA itself has quite a history. Not only has it had a hand in preserving several items and episodes from the colonial history of the United States, it is also the oldest, continuously functioning civic organization in America. It has generated a 137-year record of civic history of its own, going back all the way to 1880. At that time, there were only 38 states in the Union, and the elec-

From there, the SBCA’s ongoing ceremonies continued on Dorchester Heights, at a viewing area in front of the Heights monument, which was dedicated in 1902 – “ … and now, at last, the mayflower meets the shamrock …”. Part of those ceremonies included presenting stu-

All members of the latter group are directly and traceably descended from ancestors who fought in the American Revolution.

“Taps” was played by a lone bugler as the Stars and Stripes were slowly lowered to half mast. And then, the commemorating crowd quietly dispersed.

It was quite a start to a day that would see the arrival of the USS San Jacinto (CG-56) that afternoon and the 137th Annual SBCA Evacuation Day Banquet that evening.

South Boston: A Maritime Community

It is easy to forget that fundamentally, South Boston is a maritime community, or at least a community that looks eastward to the Old Harbor/Boston Harbor - Cape Cod Bay - Atlantic Ocean salt water complex, which nearly surrounds us.

Except for a narrow sand spit that ran along Boston Street in colonial days, the original South Boston was essentially an island. Even today, South Boston’s borders are 80% salt water, from the tip of the Fort Point Channel all the way around to Carson Beach and Mother’s Rest.

Each year, at the request of Congressman Stephen Lynch, a U.S. Navy ship visits us, and takes part in our Annual St. Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day Parade. This year, two ships visited South Boston, the USNS Comfort, a mercy/hospital ship commanded by Capt. Lanny Boswell

USN, and the USS San Jacinto (CG56), a guided missile cruiser with a long combat record commanded by Capt. Dennis Velez USN. Each of their crews took part in last weekend’s festivities, and provided contingents that marched in Sunday’s Parade.

Ollie Student Spotlight WinnerRecognizing Avah Fiasconaro

By Kevin Devlin On a monthly basis, the South Boston Neighborhood House, aka the Ollie, recognizes a youngster by announcing their “Student Spotlight” winner. These young members are recognized for their good behavior for being kind, caring, and considerate, as well as being a super kid overall. The Ollie student spotlight winner for the month of February is Avah Fiasconaro.

Avah, 7, is the daughter of Lindsy Medeiros and Stephen Fiasconaro. Her grandparents are Benny and Karen Fiasconaro, and her aunt is Jenna Fiasconaro. She has a gray and white cat named Maysie. Avah loves her cat.

She actually loves all cats and dogs as well as all animals.

Avah is in the first grade at the James Condon School which is located on D Street.

The school’s mission “is to help all students acquire the skills, knowledge and habits they need to reach proficiency” so they can succeed in high school, college and be productive citizens of this great country. Her favorite subject is math and someday she plans on being an artist.

Avah’s favorite color is blue and her favorite food is pizza, especially cheese pizzas from Sal’s Ristorante and Pizzeria on L Street. Her favorite movies are Goonies, Jaws, and The Secret Life of Pets. And, her favorite singer is Meghan Elizabeth Trainor, an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, and part-time rapper.

by Raina Telgemeier; a book about the relationship between sisters. At the Ollie, Avah loves playing with her stuffed animals, going to arts and crafts, playing on her IPad, coloring, as well as hanging out with Ollie STEM Coordinator, Katie Dwyer, who has developed a close bond with her.

“Avah’s a smart young girl,” Dwyer said. “She’s an avid

reader. Reads and writes at a high level…does great in school...and gets good grades.

“She’s been with the program for about four years now,” she added. “She also attends the summer program, loves going to various parks and beaches and really likes to swim. We’ve become attached at the hip. She’s my little buddy. The staff really loves her. She’s just awesome.”

If Avah was the President of the United States, she said that she’d “Give away free cats and dogs to everyone who wanted them” and would “find homes for any dogs and cats that didn’t have a place to sleep.”

Southie Men’s Hoop Champs QuietMan Club defeats Welch Club to capture SBBA title

By Kevin Devlin On Tuesday evening, February 28, at the Tynan Community Center gymnasium, the QuietMan Club eked out a hard fought victory against the Peter Welch Club, 56-45, to win the 2017 South Boston Basketball Association (SBBA) winter men’s league championship. QuietMan Club sharpshooter, Mo Collins, netted 28 points (two three-pointers) and was SBOL’S MVP. Both teams battled back and forth throughout the first half, and at intermission, the Peter Welch Club had a one-point lead. The teams evenly balanced, continued to exchange baskets in the second half.

Then, with five minutes left to play on the game clock, the QuietMan Club made some key

shots and key stops; and started to pull away from their foe.

For the Peter Welch Club, Chris Feeney scored 17 points, including 5 three-pointers. Jared Blandino had 12 points and Gil Ward finished with 10 points. The remaining players of the championship finalists are: Pat Pickup, Steve Losi, Dave Blandino, James Blandino, John Flaherty, and Charlie Conners.

For the QuietMan Club, Bob Bartlett scored 16 points, including 2 three-pointers.

Spencer Leftem had seven points (two treys) and Bob Bellotti contributed five points. The remaining players of the championship squad are: Matt Collins, Matt Gather, and Mike Kinahan.

Teddy Cunniff Scholarship Dinner On Tuesday evening, March 28, at the Seapoint Restaurant, the South Boston Youth Hockey League is holding its annual Teddy Cunniff Scholarship dinner.

The dinner celebrates the nominees and the winner of this award.
