Saint Valentine’s Day – 1,748 Years Later
by Rick Winterson Were you aware that Valentine’s Day is perhaps the most ancient holiday now celebrated in America – possibly going back more than 2,500 years? Valentine is an Ancient Roman name. It is derived from the Latin word “Valens”, which basically means “Strong”. It is still occasionally used as a name in English; more frequently, in French.

In addition, there is also an Ancient Roman feast day called Lupercalia, which in Rome was the beginning of spring and the onset of courtship. On the Ides of mid-February – the 14th to the 15th - young Roman girls would write their names on parchment and place the pieces of parchment in urns. Young, blindfolded Roman men would then draw names from the urn, and seek out the girl whose name they picked. Do you begin to get the connection? There was also a Catholic Bishop named Valentine, who was imprisoned by the Emperor Claudius II (a.k.a. “the Goth”). After being sentenced to death, this Valentine wrote extensively to his flock to express his holy love for each of them, concluding just before he was beheaded with, “I will always be your Continued on Page 2
