For years, Carl assisted Frank Kelley, his father-in-law, in putting on the Holiday dinners at the St. Augustine/St. Monica Halls. He has always been there for the ol’ hometown.

Safety Comes First

State enhancements on Day Boulevard a welcome sight

The state’s safety improvements along Day Boulevard to protect pedestrians from harm by alerting motorists, is a welcome sight.

Re-painting the double yellow lines in the middle of the roadway and the pedestrian crosswalks was needed after this nasty winter. Banning parking on both ends of the pedestrian crosswalks by painting the curbs yellow and installing “no parking” signs was also necessary. I

know some people would initially think (including me) that this takes away needed parking space in an already drastic environment, but in this instance, safety takes precedence. This gives pedestrians as well as motorists a better line-of-sight while walking or driving, thereby enhancing the safety of everyone.

And lastly, finally, someone in the state bureaucracy realized-I think a lightbulb inexplicably flashed one day-revealing that the pedestrian “yield” signage in in the middle of the roadways near the pedestrian crosswalks, needed to be “bolted” down.

Yellow lines banning parking near both ends of the crosswalk, give pedestrians and drivers alike more visibility, thus enhancing safety for all.

Yield for pedestrian signage in the middle of the roadway along the entire boulevard is a welcome sight for all. And the signage has finally been bolted down.

Collins Partners with State Treasury to Return Unclaimed Property and Assets Rep. Nick Collins is working with State Treasurer Deb Goldberg to notify South Boston residents who have unclaimed property and assets.

“We are excited to work with the legislature to reunite constituents with their unclaimed property,” said Treasurer Goldberg. “This partnership is part of our continued efforts to raise awareness about unclaimed property in local com-

munities all across Massachusetts.”

“There are over 2,000 residents and businesses in South Boston with unclaimed money, property and assets” said Rep. Collins. “I am happy to work with Treasurer Goldberg and her staff to get this money back to its rightful owners.”

Unclaimed property can take the form of uncashed checks, forgotten checking and savings accounts, stocks, dividends,

insurance policy proceeds, and contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes.

Any citizen who is currently owed more than $250 worth of unclaimed property will receive a letter with specific instructions on how to reclaim their property. Most accounts are considered abandoned and are turned over to the Commonwealth after three years of inactivity.

One element of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits any law that infringes on the freedom of the press. Freedom of the press is a key factor in maintaining a democratic society. Without it, governmental or special interest-group censorship would rare its ugly head and we would end up living in Big Brother’s world.

But by being free, the press also has to be wary from corrupting itself from its main mission, its true purpose.

In 1947, after four years of deliberation, the Hutchins Commission produced a report,”… Urging newspapers to commit to social responsibility with balance and fairness…”

But is that a reality today? No, unfortunately it is not the case.

The press can’t just present one side and ignore the other.

That’s not their role. Those on the Left shouldn’t think they are completely right and those on the other end are completely wrong. And that goes for the Right also.

The media should present all information on all issues and let us decide. They should not slant nor omit pertinent information. That is not their role.

Their job is to inform and

not indoctrinate. When they do present only one side of an issue, they insult us, try to dissuade us, and want their agenda to become our agenda. It’s unethical and smacks of intolerance when they berate those who disagree with their point of view.

It’s our right to decide what we believe and don’t believe in, be it pro-abortion, prolife, pro-choice, or stricter guidelines regarding immigration violations, border security, the Iranian nuke deal, or other important issues we face today. I want to know all points of view on current issues that affect all Americans, at home and abroad. I want to be able to make up my own mind and not be brow-beaten by advocates on the Right or the Left side of the spectrum. Let us make up our own minds by presenting us with all viewpoints so that we may arrive at our own informed decisions.

And so, that’s what the press has to do for us, to report on all matters in a fair, unprejudiced, and all-encompassing manner.

So that we, the people, can make up our own minds as to what kind of society we want to live in, and what kind of nation we want to be moving forward in this crazy world.

“The Calico Buffalo”: The Musical

It was written

by South Boston author EJ (Ed) Stapleton, who grew up on P and East Fifth and graduated from South Boston High School in 1971.

Well, Ed’s book has been made into a musical, which has made

it into the top ten submissions to the 2015 New York Musicals Festival (the NYMF). It is the story of a young buffalo, the son of the buffalo herd’s chief, who is born with calico markings instead of the usual dun brown furry coats that buffaloes ordinarily sport. Huge adventures, which we won’t reveal, follow almost at once.

Ed and Grammy Awardwinning Composer Peter Stopschinski took five years to develop this musical. Their care and craftsmanship show. “The Calico Buffalo” was extended after garnering standing ovations at the Festival; please remember, the NYMF is considered to be the “Sundance” of musical festivals.

Syndicated columnist Liz Smith, in her review of Ed’s musical, stated, “We can always use a brand new legend in this old world, and now we have one – ‘The Calico Buffalo’”.

That’s high praise, but with all due respect to Ms. Smith, “The Calico Buffalo” has actually become a legend in the New World – buffaloes are native to America.

2015 Boys & Girls Club Cruise Rocked

As one of the final events in South Boston till the fall, the summertime Boys & Girls Club Cruise is always highly anticipated. This year of 2015 was no exception. The Wednesday evening Cruise was sold out, needless to say. Three decks of entertainment kept everyone, well, entertained.

singing; topside dancers kicked it to DJ Doug Lane’s music. Everyone was celebrating – deservedly so – because the Boys & Girls Club had reopened on Monday, July 6, after a solid year of renovations.

The weather was mixed, but dry and cool overall. Those who came aboard the Provincetown II for the nautical scenery were not disappointed. Cloud forms led to an unusual sunset; nightfall created some beautiful views of the City’s skylines; darkness brought sight-

ings of lighted ships passing in the gloaming.

Music is the “event du jour” on the Boys & Girls Club Cruises. A constant line of singers for the whole three hours of the Cruise kept the Karaoke DJ hopping. Some were actually pretty good. The dancing topside on the upper deck got more and more “active” as the evening progressed. The rock-rap group played their eardrums out.

For those who were quieter sorts of folk, the Cruise was a stunning eve-

ning of sightseeing. The first loop of the tour took the Provincetown II passengers to the inner harbor and the Mystic River/Tobin Bridge, past the USS Constitution’s drydock.

Boston’s skyline and rebuilt harbor shores are truly impressive. The sunset silhouetted the outer harbor along the Presidential Roads. The Conley Terminal was brightly lit, as it unloaded a colossal ocean-going Maersk freighter after dark. It was a beautiful tour, and all in all, quite an event.

The market will run as usual from 12 - 6 pm, with regular vendors Freitas Farm, Wenger’s Farm, and Red’s Best Seafood.

In addition, we will be hosting students from the UMass Extension program conducting cooking demonstrations from 12 - 4.

The Kids Day celebration will go from 2 - 5 pm. There will be live music, balloon twisting, face painting, and more!

We invite South Boston non-profits who serve children or families to set up a table with an activity or craft.

Goings-On in July

It has been a hot but glorious summer so far in July, in our ol’ hometown of South Boston. It seemed the entire American nation, and much of the world as well, dropped in to say “hello” to us.

Moakley Field went to the dogs.

The event that caused this was entitled “The Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge”. It was sponsored by the Purina Company, who specialize in animal feeds, especially for household pets. The canine contestants were all smart, athletic, and thankfully peaceable.

The dogs were a treat to watch.

On the Agility Course, with their owners alongside them giving the dogs their cues, they leaped over barriers, ran through corrugated tunnels, and navigated step ramps and a seesaw. The Diving Dog Competition pitted the dogs against a large pool of water, into which the

dogs dived to retrieve a small float – the longest dive won the contest.

Frisbee catch and fetching thrown objects were also key competitions.

Hugely intelligent Jack Russell fox terriers, first bred by a parson named John Russell in England in the 1800s, had a hurdle race to themselves.

Next stop was the Lawn at D, where white rabbits worthy of Lewis Carroll and his “Alice in Wonderland” were positioned. Those that are standing on their hind legs tower as much as 20 feet – more than two storeys high. Artists Amanda Parer calls her inflatable creations “Intrude”. And intrude they do, but harmlessly so. The children who came were a lesson in wonder.

NRP Sagres III, the Tall Ship from the Portuguese Navy, visited the South Boston Waterfront last weekend, docking at Fan Pier. She is a graceful, steel-hulled sailing ship that sports three tall masts and

is well over 200 feet long. Other famous ships docked in Boston Harbor, too. The Queen Mary 2, the Cunard Line’s famous passenger ship, berthed at Black Falcon Terminal. L’Hermione, a historically exact recreation of Lafayette’s Tall Ship from our War of Independence, docked at a berth on Rowes Wharf. She is a beautiful vessel that attracted crowds of Bostonians over the weekend before its departure.

and Leonardo Ugolinin at the edge of Moakley Field last week. This sculpture was a kind of monument that invited anyone who wants to see something unusual to go to Revere Beach this weekend – FRI/ SAT/SUN; July 24-26 - for the International Sand Sculpture Festival. The Festival is really an awesome sight, which is free and open to the public. Bring a lunch and take the “T’s” Blue Line to the last stop at the Wonderland Station.

BNBL is Back Curley/Tynan Crew engulfed in summer hoop action

Its summertime in Boston so that means the referees involved in the oldest youth recreational hoop league in the nation, the Boston Neighborhood Basketball League (BNBL), have already tossed the ball up at midcourt, starting another summer league season. Girls and boys throughout the city, from ages eleven to nineteen, are eligible to compete in this league. The South Boston sites are the Tynan, Condon, and Walsh Center gyms.

The players on the Curley/Tynan Crew Club have been playing since they first learned the fundamentals of the game; either at the Gate of Heaven CYO program or at the South Boston Boys and Girls Club.

The 2015 South Boston Little League Champions were recently crowned, and the winner was the Metro Energy Club. This special part of this celebration was that this club has won three consecutive Little League Championships.

REVIEW: Cocktail Hour Music Returns

Sometimes our hectic age catches up with itself – with a sort of “Back to the Future” feel. Do you remember the custom of a drink (or two, not more) after work, most definitely with music – at the Eliot Lounge, the Merry Go Round in the Copley Plaza, or even the Quincy Marketplace in its early days?

Well, that custom is back, and it’s as enjoyable as ever. Nick Thorkelson plays the keyboard Tuesday evenings from 5:30 till 7:30 at Internal Matters – a new lounge-cum-bistro at 35 Channel Center in South Boston’s Fort Point District. Nick is something of a “cultural polymath”, if South Boston Online can be permitted to coin a phrase. He plays and sings; he’s a song writer, an artist, and a superb cartoonist – the list goes on.

He started solo last Tuesday, play-

ing a blend of night club, cabaret, and pop hit songs, ranging from “When a Man Loves a Woman” to “The Third Man Theme” (shades of Orson Welles). Guitarist Larry Plitt joined Nick at half-time. Together, they featured some bluesy numbers that arrived here from Chicago by way of Memphis before mid-20th Century.

At times, they branched out into C&W, with “Jambalaya” (shades of Hank Williams, Jo Stafford, and The Carpenters), “San Antonio Rose”, and “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” (even more shades of Hank Williams).

Nick will play again at Internal Matters on Tuesday evening, July 28, 5:30 till 7:30, and then presumably again on the four Tuesday evenings during August in the same time slot. Patriot Homes Demolition Begins The South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation (SBNDC) is proud to announce that demolition of the eastern side of the former police station on D Street began last week.

When completed, the 24-unit development will provide veterans and their families with affordable studio, one-bedroom, and twobedroom apartments. The police station building will be adapted into 12 units, and a new building will be constructed behind it on Athens Street, also containing 12 units. Construction began in March, and is expected to be completed next summer.

Mayor’s Cup Action Tournament a great success at Moakley Park and will conclude this weekend in West Roxbury

During the last two weekends, enthusiastic youngsters from throughout the city gathered at

Moakley Park to compete in the Mayor’s Cup Baseball Tournament. Nine and ten-year olds from Charlestown, South Boston, East Boston, Savin Hill, South End, Cedar Grove, Allston-Brighton, and West Roxbury (the Parkway) competed for city baseball bragging rights.

Last weekend, the eleven and twelve-year olds competed in the Mayor’s Cup Tournament at the

Parkway Little League Field in West Roxbury; and will conclude their age-division tournament play this upcoming weekend.

Mayor Martin Walsh, a former Little League coach, was present on opening day at Moakley Park to shake hands with the players, and wish them good luck in the tournament.
