Drug Series 05: Enforcement This is the fifth article in South Boston Online’s series on local drug abuse – especially the current heroin overdose epidemic. Now everyone knows that drugs are illegal around here, except for the narrowly-defined medical use of marijuana, which requires a specific license. It is therefore appropriate to discuss drug enforcement as part of this series. (PLEASE NOTE: We have used no photographs in this article, because pictures of drug enforcement personnel, who frequently work in plain clothes, might make their assignments more difficult or more dangerous.) by Rick Winterson
Just to state the obvious, South Boston Online is certain that all our readers realize there’s a serious drug epidemic in Massachusetts and all over Boston.
Why do we say “epidemic”? Simply because there were more than 1,000 deaths statewide from heroin overdoses last year. There were probably many more that were not reported. The tragedy continues in 2015. You see it happening wherever you go. Many of you have witnessed drug usage and drug busts on and around Moakley Field. Both Boston dailies have published numerous articles about the horrors of heroin and the opioid battle. Elected officials have spoken out loudly. Police in Gloucester now approach drug abuse and addiction with treatment instead of punishment. This writer took a weekend off in Provincetown last week, only to find front-page articles in the Provincetown Banner about a bad batch of heroin that caused at least one fatal overdose on June 6. The Banner called it a “tidal wave of opiates sweeping across Cape Cod.” continued on page 2
