Fr. Joe White Receives Jack McDonough Award The Jack McDonough Award is presented annually at the Gatey C.Y.O. Fundraiser, to a community member who exemplifies Christianity in today’s society and the goals of the Gate of Heaven C.Y.O. and its Alumni Association. This year’s recipient is formerly of Savin Hill and now the pastor at St. Vincent’s Church in South Boston, the Reverend Joseph M. White.

Father Joe over the past several years has been the driving force of St Vincent’s CYO program.

He is a strong supporter of the youth of our community and is always going the extra mile to get the necessary funds needed to support these programs at St. Vinnie’s. His commitment to

New Bridges to Hope in the Wake of Long Island

On October 8th of last year, I had to make a painful but necessary decision.

The Long Island Bridge, after years of neglect, had to be shut down. The decaying 63-year-old structure posed imminent danger to the clients and staff of the shelter, transition, detox, and treatment programs housed on Long Island in Boston Harbor.

That decision hit me hard, because I knew at a very personal level the impact it would have. You see, Long Island played an important role in my own recovery from alcoholism. For years I drove out there, every other week, to share a message of hope. For years in the State Legislature, I fought to protect those programs against wave after wave of budget cuts. The clients and providers are not just statistics to me. I know many of them, and I’ve shared some of their experiences. I have worked, in every way I know how, to help them.

I haven’t been alone. Dedicated public servants, nonprofit providers, and people of faith have been working day and night to keep homeless men and women safe, and find new homes for the Long Island programs. The hard work of this compassionate community is making a difference. I want to update you on our progress, and share with you why it is giving me hope that Boston can turn the tide against homelessness and addiction.

Throughout the fall and winter, City and private shelters stepped up to serve every person who sought help, every night. Outreach workers went the extra mile to make sure everyone had access to shelter. New overnight drop-ins and daytime warming centers opened. In a

winter that went down in history as the harshest on record, I’m deeply grateful that—unlike most years—we did not lose a single homeless person on our streets.

By January, we opened a new shelter on Southampton Street, in a City-owned building close to Boston Medical Center and various service providers.

Currently offering 250 beds, by July it will replace the more than 400 that were lost on Long Island. In addition, we are creating space in that facility for housing services, case management, healthcare, and mental health and addiction counseling. The support services at Southampton Street will be more abundant and better integrated than in our Long Island shelter.

In addition, the Boston Public Health Commission’s four transitional housing programs are being preserved at full capacity in new locations. The Wyman Community Reentry and Transitions stabilization programs are already up and running at our River Street campus in Mattapan. Safe Harbor and SOAR will move from their temporary site in the South End Fitness Center to the new Southampton Street facility once the renovations there are complete.

We are also providing relocation help and renovation funds to the four privately operated programs that were housed on Long Island. Volunteers of America’s two residential recovery programs, Hello House and Rebound, will be re-opening in newly renovated facilities very soon. Bay Cove Human Services is close to securing a new home for its Andrew House/Bridge to Recovery detox center. And we are working actively with Victory Programs to find a site for Joelyn’s Family Home.

In short, all the former Long Island programs are on the road to full restoration.

This work has been about more than overcoming a disruption. It has

afforded us a long-overdue new look at homelessness and addiction services.

It has allowed us, with our community and provider partners, to begin building better, more permanent solutions.

This isn’t just a city issue. It’s a worsening regional crisis. Boston has 10 percent of the state’s population, but our homeless census counts about onethird of the statewide total. Meanwhile, between 35 and 50 percent of our city’s shelter guests on a given night come from communities outside Boston.

Our shelter network, like our addiction programs, serves the entire region.

I’m proud to say that in the City of Boston, we are committed to sheltering everyone, every night: no matter where they arrive from, no matter what issues they bring, no matter what. But people in trouble need more than a safe bed. They need pathways to health and homes. That’s what we are focused on providing.

We may have lost the Long Island Bridge. But we are building many more bridges to new life for our most vulnerable neighbors. Some of those structures are nearly complete. But the work won’t be finished until we end homelessness and stem the addiction crisis for good.

Gatey Rev. Paul V. Donovan Catholic Youth Awards The Rev. Paul V. Donovan Award for the Parish Outstanding Catholic Youth is presented annually to a person exemplifies the best of what it means to live out the Catholic faith in today’s society.

The criteria used in selecting the recipient are based on participation in parish C.Y.O. activities, on church attendance, and on personal characteristics, which evidence a commitment to the Christian Faith. This award is presented as an expression of our pride in the youth of our community.

The 2015 Outstanding Catholic Youth Female Award will be presented to Molly Cox. Molly is a junior at Boston Latin Academy

and is the daughter of James and Jill Cox of East Seventh Street.

The 2015 Outstanding Catholic Youth Male Award will be presented to Matthew Flaherty. Matt is a senior and attends Boston College High School and is the son of Jim and Katie Flaherty of East Sixth Street.

Mother’s Day, 2015 Mother’s Day this year was unusual – unusually good and fine for two reasons.

Without doubt, the weather smiled, and although it’s only one indication, the Southeast Expressway was jam-packed on Sunday afternoon. It was filled with carloads of sons, daughters, and grandchildren going to and from the homes of Boston’s mothers, or taking those mothers out to special spots for a family celebration.

Last year (2014) was the 100th Anniversary of Mother’s Day. Back in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day an official American holiday, when a West Virginia woman (and mother) named Anna Jarvis convinced him to do so, after she put in six years of non-stop campaigning. President Wilson wisely declared Mother’s Day to be a so-called “movable

feast” with no specific date – it’s always celebrated on the second Sunday of the month of May. Thus, Mother’s Day is uniquely American.

Each individual American mother is honored. After a century of Mother’s Days in the U.S., some 150 other nations in the

world follow our lead. Most of them also observe their Mother’s Days on the second Sunday of May. It’s only a historical coincidence, of course, but there’s another unusual dimension to last Sunday, May 10. Two hundred and forty (240) years ago – May 10, 1775 – Ethan

Allen and his Green Mountain Boys from Vermont, along with Benedict Arnold from Connecticut, captured Fort Ticonderoga in upstate New York from a small squad of British soldiers. Yes, Benedict Arnold was still a hero back then.

This minor victory “liberated” 59 cannons that were brought to Boston nine months later by Henry Knox, the bookseller from Boston.

These cannons were emplaced on South Boston’s Dorchester Heights. The threat they posed to the British occupiers of Boston led to Evacuation Day on March 17, 1776 – George Washington’s first victory.

Erosion of our freedoms is a slippery slope most Americans don’t want to go down. But they are the silent majority who sit back and watch others, digging into the dam, and waiting for the water to burst forward and cause havoc.

The far Left and the far Right would like to create an Orwellian society where free speech is muted and their world view is considered the only world view worthy of acknowledgment. But either one would pose a danger to freedom of speech. Either one would be detrimental to democracy. People should be able to freely express their own ideas without being shouted down and run out of town; or worse, forever silenced one way or the other.

The government needs to keep a watchful eye towards those who advocate limiting freedom of speech.

Our government also needs to keep a watchful eye on itself and we on the government.

Our government was created to protect our rights and would betray

us if they succumbed to the wishes of the few over the many. Betray us if they succumbed to those who want to limit our freedom of speech because they can’t control contrary views or deal with debate. Betray us if they championed wrong over what is right.

On August 8, 1950 in a special message to Congress on the internal security of the United States, President Harry Truman said, “Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizen and creates a country where everyone lives in fear.”

The French philosopher Voltaire said, “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death, your right to say it. “ I agree.

And so shouldn’t every fair-minded American who wants to preserve freedom of speech in our great country.

Mayor Walsh Announces SB One Way Streets to End May 13th

City returns one way streets to two-way traffic flow Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced the South Boston Emergency Transportation Reconfiguration (ETR), which took effect February 14 and extended into mid-spring, will end on May 13. The Boston Transportation Department will begin removing one-way directional signage on Monday, May 11, and the twoway traffic operation will take fulleffect on Wednesday, May 13.

“After thoughtful consideration and hearing from the South Boston community, we have decided to end the emergency reconfiguration,” said Mayor Walsh. “This

plan relieved traffic congestion and increased public safety during our most challenging winter months, but now it is time to return to our normal traffic flow and welcome the spring season.”

The ETR configured several streets in South Boston to one-way only in an effort to improve public safety following the historic amount of snow Boston received over a 30 day period. The City hosted two community meetings, one at the Condon Elementary School, and one at the Tynan Elementary School, and received constructive feedback from the local community.

The City will continue with its plan to survey the residents of South Boston about their desire for any future transportation changes.

South Boston residents are encouraged to reach out to the Mayor’s office with questions about the termination of the reconfiguration by calling the Mayor’s hotline at 617635-4500.

St Peter Academy Has Global Appeal

A delegation of educators and dignitaries representing the Seoul Gangseo-gu Council, South Korea recently spent the morning at St Peter Academy. The 17 member South Korean panel was visiting schools in the United States to learn about US Early Childhood Education.

The delegation chose St Peter Academy for its Boston visit because of the school’s notable early childhood curriculum which infuses developmentally appropriate academic lessons in math, English language arts, literacy and STEM in a fun and engaging atmosphere that models positive social and emotional

responses in a safe and nurturing environment.

Principal Andy Dilba guided the delegates through a tour of four prekindergarten and kindergarten classrooms where they observed and interacted with teachers and students while the students were actively engaged in learning time. The delegates were impressed with the level of knowledge shown by each class and the children’s display of welcome and good manners.

A meeting followed the tour where delegates had the opportunity to engage members of the St Peter Academy Com-

munity in a discussion and Q&A about the Academy’s school wide approach to learning. The tour concluded with a presentation of a Korean memento gift for the school gallery by the Seoul Gangseo-gu Council’s President and a promise by all involved to continue the collaboration and new friendships made.

St Peter Academy, an independent community based private school, is celebrating 10 years of service to the community. It is South Boston’s only Pre-K through Grade 8 School. Class size is limited to 20 students which is ideal for

creating a nurturing environment filled with interactive learning opportunities. Meet Nashley and Anna Young girls love pizza, having fun, listening to music, and hanging out with their friends

They are happy, young girls who are enjoying life to the fullest. They both love eating pizza while watching TV. They are doing well in class.

They love hanging out with their friends at the Tierney Learning Center or at the Old Colony Youth Center (The “OC”) playing various games, or doing their homework.

They both love listening to Austin Mahone, Ne-Yo, Dove Cameron, Ariana Grande, Zendaya, and Beyonce; all well-known America singers. Our two young girls are Nashley Villar and Anna Laskowski.

Nashley, 9, is the daughter of Daney Bernabel and Moreno Villar. She

has two brothers named Michael and Raphael and a sister named Ashley. Nashley is in the fourth grade at the Perkins Elementary School which is located in South Boston. Her favorite subject is art and someday she hopes to be a veterinarian.

At the Tierney Learning Center,

Nashley plays basketball in the Doc Wayne Program. Like her friend Anna, she also goes over to the OC and plays ping pong, pool, or foosball. Or, she stays outside and plays in the nearby playground.

If Nashley was the President of the United States, she said that she would, “Help animals who are

almost extinct and protect them from people, have more security in America to protect people from bad people, and give food and clothing to people who need help.”

Anna Laskowski, 11, is the daughter of Robert and Clara Laskowski. She has an older sister named Raquel and a white, brown, and black cat named Softy. Anna is in the fifth grade at the Richard J. Murphy Elementary School which is located in Dorchester. She loves swimming in the pool at school and her favorite stroke is the backstroke. Her favorite subject is also art and someday she hopes to be a fashion designer.

If Anna was our chief executive in the nation’s capital, she said that she would, “Smash all the guns she could find so people won’t die, and punish people who abuse animals.”

Michael, 10, is the son of Sonia Caratenga and Omar Oviedo. He has a sister named Talia, and two brothers, Junior and Matthew.

Michael is in the fourth grade at the Perkins Elementary School which is located in South Boston.

His favorite time in school is recess and gym. Someday, he hopes to be a businessman and make a ton of money.

Franklin Onuoha has been the Director of Technology for the South Boston Boys and Girls Club/ Intel Computer Clubhouse for the past six years. He attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and received his Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Boston University. He loves helping young people experience the joy of learning by gaining knowledge in the ever-expanding field of technology.

He currently oversees the Tierney Tech Team and computer-related programs such as the Studio 52 Fellows and Hip-Hop Loves Boston.

“The Hip-Hop Love Foundation (htttp://www.hiphoploves.com /# home) co-producers workshops, seminars and events,” said Director Onuoha, “…that create a space for

Members create their projects based off their passions and interests. One of his pet projects is the Family Creative Learning Initiative. This initiative focuses on engaging parents and their children with technology. Onuoha just concluded a round of workshops last Thursday, May 7, and he can’t wait to begin another round in September, when he’ll be back working at the newly-renovated Club.

“Families come in and eat just like they would at the dinner table,” Onuoha said. “Then they make creative projects while learning how to code creatively. At the end of each workshop, families share their creations; fostering the spirit of celebration just like how a family celebrates
