Gerry Dooley Inspired Loyalty News Item: Dunford to JCS Chair By Ray Flynn Former Mayor of Boston and U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican

Gerry Dooley passed away several weeks ago and those of us who knew him felt very loyal to him. Gerry made friends all his life, including many so called “newcomers” to South Boston who were very kind to him. A continued Southie neighborhood tradition of loyalty which he inspired. Most of the young men growing up in South Boston in those early days, joined the military right after high school which could be helpful to them in getting a job when returning home. Whether it was becoming a cop, fireman, getting

into the union or working for one of the utility companies. But because of Gerry’s serious sickness as a boy, he couldn’t go into the military. I remember meeting him after work one Friday afternoon at The Pub. He could hardly breathe with all the dirty contaminated air he had been breathing in his body where he worked. He never had health care or a pension plan till he went to work for the Boston Water and Sewer Department. I had seen my own father and neighbors hospitalized with TB working under the same hazardous unhealthy conditions. This had a big impact on me when I served in elective

General Joseph Dunford, Jr. (USMC) is President Obama’s nominee to become the Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, taking over from General Martin Dempsey, who is stepping down after five years. Dunford and his family were South Boston residents from 1955 until 1967, when they moved to Quincy. In recent years, he has served in combat both in Afghanistan and Iraq.
