Now that spring is here, it’s time to put on your walking shoes. If you would like to have a goal for your walk – a demanding goal, we might add – visit all of the new establishments that have set up shop in South Boston. They generally are clustered, with few exceptions, along Broadway from L Street to Broadway Station.

South Boston Online will apologize in advance if we omit one of your new favorites, which couldn’t include your own shop as well.

We said “demanding”, but the distance from L to Broadway Station is just over a mile. Even with short detours down L Street, Dorchester Street, and Dorchester Avenue, you can traverse that distance in less than an hour. Stop in at your favorite

places of refreshment along the way – new or old. You won’t be disappointed.

And please remember, we are talking about new places to go only in the more residential areas of South Boston. Space in this issue prevents us from including new openings along the booming South Boston Waterfront. And we’ll write up the scene in South Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood in a future issue. ETR’s Blanket Approach Won’t Fix Southie Traffic Boston is notorious for its traffic flow problems. In fact, it’s purported that many of the streets in downtown Boston evolved from hundreds year old cow paths that led to Boston Common. And despite the Big Dig and other efforts by past administrations, traffic has only gotten worse as the years have passed.

So when Mayor Walsh announced the South Boston Emergency Transportation Reconfiguration (ETR) in February, it was understandably met with quite a few raised eyebrows. South Boston had seen a record amount of snow (around 80 inches at that time) in just a few short weeks – causing the neighborhood to go into almost complete gridlock.

Something had to be done to alleviate the congestion. And making two way streets into one ways turned out to be a quick and easy fix – a simple

yet effective way to get traffic flowing again.

Now that the snow has largely melted, cars are no longer forced to park halfway out into travel lanes and there are no more nine foot tall snow mounds creating visibility issues around every corner. Things have started to get back to normal on South Boston’s roadways. Residents were expecting their side streets to go back to they way they had been before the storms – until last week’s announcement that the ETR will be extended until June with an eye towards possibly making the changes permanent.

As anyone who has driven through South Boston can attest, navigating its side streets can be a daunting and at times frustrating task on the best of days. But the ETR has not been a universal remedy for these traffic

woes. Conversely, the argument can be made that for every issue that the ETR has solved, it seems to have created a new one. Try driving around the Telegraph Hill area these days if you disagree.

This is not meant to be a full-on condemnation of the ETR as some of the changes have had a positive effect on traffic flow. Mayor Walsh and his administration should be commended for taking decisive action to fix traffic flow issues that, at the time, caused serious delays for drivers and created a public safety issue.

They should also be commended for the extension as they are working to help fix the long festering issues that South Boston residents have had with traffic and parking. But switching the way traffic runs on side streets is not the only answer. It is time for Southie’s streets to go back to the way

the way they were – at least for now.

Of all of Boston’s neighborhoods, South Boston is perhaps the best candidate for thorough transportation reform. Most of Southie’s streets are laid out on a grid – unlike the paved cow paths of downtown Boston. And through a long term and thorough transportation study, it would be possible to alleviate traffic and parking issues.

It’s time to move on from the ETR. It did what it was meant to do. It helped South Boston residents through the snowiest winter on record. But if we want to fix traffic in Southie, let’s do it the right way. The ETR is a shotgun approach where a scalpel is needed. Let’s put Boston’s resources to work and come up with an innovative, comprehensive and community oriented approach to fix traffic issues in Southie once and for all.

We have become a nation wherein accountability in many instances has been thrown out the window. Those on the Left blame the Right. Those on the Right blame the Left. The remaining Americans, the majority who sit in the Middle, wonder whose right, who is wrong, and if so, who should be held accountable.

As a result, committees are formed, meetings are held, blame is tossed from corner to corner, and in the end, nothing is accomplished, and again, nobody held accountable. As days

pass issues fade like the setting sun.

For instance, Lois Lerner was in contempt of Congress for her failure her to reveal her part in the IRS targeting of conservative groups. She pleaded the Fifth and retired from her job and the public spotlight. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton destroyed her Emails on her personal server and declared she was right in doing so. She said she didn’t do anything wrong.

Will she ever be brought to task and have to answer why she conceivably could have compromised national security for not having a secure Email

Server? In both matters the Left would have you believe that nothing is amiss while the Right is in a dither.

In our public schools across the nation, students are allowed to act out against fellow students, teachers and administrators, without any repercussions.

Those in the know say students need hugs instead of detention or suspension. Forget about discipline, that’s an antiquated idea that doesn’t deserve a seat in today’s classrooms. Is that the ticket to promote better behavior?

I always thought that for every action there is a reaction, and the person

causing the action is responsible for the reaction; and needs to be held accountable? I always thought that looking the other way when someone does something wrong only promotes more bad behavior? But I guess not in today’s America.

So, let me get this straight. People can do what they want whenever they want and walk away laughing at those who deserve to be laughed at for their complacent, narrow-minded views of what is right and what is wrong.

Is that the ticket to a stronger America?

Pier 4 Owner and BRA Solicit Ideas for SB Waterfront Proposals should enhance access to harbor by creating a vibrant public destination The Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) and Colorado-based real estate investment trust firm UDR are working together to flesh out plans for 20,000 square feet of new civic and cultural space at UDR’s almost complete 100 Pier 4 development. The 21-story apartment building in the South Boston Waterfront, whose 388 units are now being leased, includes two levels of interior space as well as ground-level outdoor space that will help activate the building on the water’s edge by serving as a public destination. UDR and the BRA have released a Request for Interest to solicit programming ideas and a potential operator for the space. An informational meeting will be held at 100 Pier 4 next Tuesday, April 14, to share more details about the opportunity with interested parties.

“We have an opportunity on the harbor to transform Pier 4 into a destination that will bring tourism and fuel our local economy,” said Mayor Martin J. Walsh. “Arts, culture and innovation are how we will create a thriving 21st century city, and this project gives us the opportunity to meet those goals and liven up a public space.”

Qualified uses could include museum, library, exhibition, gallery, theater, performance, or aquarium space. The exterior and first floor civic and cultural areas are intended to be interconnected with similar space on the building’s mezzanine level, in terms of both design and programming.

“The South Boston Waterfront continues to be one of the city’s most attractive places to live, work, and play, and we want

to ensure that public space and access to the harbor remains a top priority,” said BRA Director Brian Golden. “We have a unique opportunity with the space at Pier 4, and we’re encouraging applicants to think creatively and present us with a wide range of ideas for what this could become.”

Responses to the Request for Interest are due on Monday, May 4. The BRA and UDR will review submissions in consultation with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, which oversees the state’s waterways regulations, with the goal of selecting a successful proposal

by June 1.

The 20,000 square feet of civic and cultural space at Pier 4 is part of a larger plan to activate 127,000 square feet of dedicated public space along the waterfront, as envisioned by the municipal harbor planning process that the BRA has led with the community. The neighborhood is already home to such destinations as the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston Children’s Museum, Boston Tea Party Museum, Artists for Humanity, Midway Studios, the Fort Point Arts Community, and the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

100 Pier 4, which includes retail and restaurant space in addition to the civic and cultural space, is the first of three projects planned to redevelop the entire pier.

Phase two calls for a 15-story office tower, and nearly 200 condominium units are planned for a 9-story building in the final phase. The master plan for the area also includes a waterfront park, extension of the Harborwalk, and a water commons for water taxi service and touch and go public docking.

Getting to Know Amanda Young girl keeps busy on and off the playing fields

She’s a pleasant young girl.

She’s polite, well-mannered, and happy. She is Amanda Talbot.

Amanda is the daughter of Nicole Talbot. She has a brother named Andrew and a sister named Sara. She’s thirteen years old and is in the seventh grade at the Boston Collegiate Charter School. Her favorite subject is history and someday she’d like to be either a professional athlete or a musician.

Amanda’s favorite color is blue.

Her favorite food is chicken and her favorite entertainers are the One Direction Band.

Amanda has been active in the South Boston Youth Soccer

League since she was knee high to a grasshopper. But her favorite sport is hockey. She’s been playing in the South Boston Youth Hockey League for the past six seasons. “I’m really good on defense,” she said. “I also like to score and last month I scored a goal on a slap shot from the blue line.”

This past season she was on the Pee Wee “C” team that won the bronze medal at Lake Placid. She had a great time in New York, an amazing experience she’ll never forget.

“It was really cool,” she said.

“We got to skate at the Oval and on the ice that the Olympic ‘Miracle on Ice’ team skated on years ago. Like I said, it was really, really cool.

“It was different up there,” she added. “There was a great res-

taurant right next to the hotel and there were a lot of dairy and candy stores. My teammates and I enjoyed the entire trip.”

In her leisure time, Amanda hangs out with her friends and skates at the Murphy Rink. And, she’s a Club girl. “I love the Boys Club,” she said. “It is fun and a place I can go to hang out with my friends. I do my homework first, then I either draw, or play pool or play ping pong.”

At the Club, Amanda is also a member of the “Harmaniacs”a six piece band-that plays at Club related events, such as the recent Saint Patrick’s Day road race. She’s the band’s drummer and also sings. She’s been in this band for the past five years and loves it.

“We are more than just a band,” she said with a smile. “We are like a family…very close…and we love each other and have a great time playing and singing together in front of people.”

Mayor Walsh Announces April JROTC Ready, Willing and Able!

Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced “One Boston Day,” a new tradition to honor the resiliency, generosity and strength of the City of Boston on April 15. The day will be an opportunity to recognize the good in our community and reflect on the spirit of grace and resilience of the people of Boston that was exemplified in the response to the loss and the tragedies of April 15, 2013.

The new tradition will put a mark on a day honoring the strength of our city, its people and their acts of goodness toward one another.

The Mayor made the announcement with John Hancock at the unveiling of the 2015 Boston Marathon street banners at Marathon Sports on Boylston Street.

“One Boston Day will inspire all of us to come together as the community we are and share the spirit of Boston by giving

back,” said Mayor Walsh. “April 15 is a date that has come to stand for our city’s deepest values. I hope everyone can mark this day in a way that is appropriate and inclusive for each of our experiences.”

“One Boston Day” will encourage random acts of kindness and spreading goodwill, and activities across the City will encourage individuals to give back to their community. The new tradition came together in compilation with the desire expressed by many survivors to pass on the kindness, generosity and support they received following the 2013 Boston Marathon.

On the morning of April 15, the Mayor will assist in raising honorary banners on Boylston Street to honor the victims and survivors of April 15, 2013. The Mayor will then visit multiple community sites throughout Boston’s neighborhoods marking “One Boston Day.”

The South Boston JROTC Cadets helped out during the Easter Egg Hunt this past weekend, honored the history of South Boston on Evacuation Day, and have helped the Dorchester Heights Association in the past with neighborhood activities. Christian Badgett, on the left, wanted to make sure people know South Boston JROTC are ready, willing, and able to help with community events. Please contact me anytime for further details.

I know there are other groups of young people in the neighborhood always willing to help. What a richness for a neighborhood to have--multiple groups of teens ready to lend a hand!!

Somehow, Easter always seems to retain its religious meaning. Possibly that’s because the Easter we just celebrated in 2015 last weekend was essentially the same time of year as the original Easter almost 2,000 years ago. Not even the December 25 date for Christmas can accurately make that claim. In addition, Easter always occurs in the Spring. Whatever you believe, it’s certainly time to be grateful for milder weather after the winter we suffered – mild enough that many of us willingly got up before sunrise this year to

And the sun did indeed rise, promptly at 6:20, after casting a brick-red, before-dawn glow. It then broke through a slight bank of fog, and shone brilliantly under a thin layer of stratus clouds near the horizon. By the time the services were underway, the sunshine was

South Boston Online couldn’t cover every service, but there were plenty to choose from. We covered the St. Brigid Mass on Castle Island, while the Fourth Presbyterian Church held their Sunrise Service on Carson Beach. The weather was bright and very, very crisp, especially for April 5. Perhaps as many as 1,500 worshipers thronged Castle Island for the Mass said by Fr. Robert Casey, the Pastor of St. Brigid Parish.

The first reading was from the Acts of the Apostles – the conversation between Peter and Cornelius. The Gospel was the John’s account of the Resurrection, when Mary Magdalene went to the tomb donated by Joseph of Arimathea before sunrise

and found it empty. She alerted the Apostles and returned with Peter and John. Christ had risen. The central part of the Easter Sunrise Mass then began with the spoken Credo – renouncing Satan and affirming beliefs in the Resurrection.

The HUB Church is comparatively new to South Boston. Pastor Charlie Dunn held the Hub’s own Easter service at 10 a.m. on Easter Sunday in the District 9 Collaborative – 555 East Second Street, second floor. The Hub’s service intentionally has the feel of a neighborhood gathering. Storytelling is one means of HUB Church’s worship; it has as its aim the creation of “missional” disciples and families.

There were at least a dozen other Easter services of various kinds on Easter Sunday, in all of the active churches in South Boston. And that wasn’t all – The Fourth Presbyterian performed “Jesus Christ, Superstar” Holy Saturday afternoon, and provided a breakfast after its Sunrise Service. The Castle Island Association opened the Fort and had a continental breakfast for all. The sun shone brilliantly most of the day long. Easter brunches were to be had at many, many places in and around Southie.

The clouds and rain of Good Friday were completely dispelled. Easter Sunday was a fine, fine day.

They are happy, funny young girls with a zest for life. They enjoy going to the Joseph Tierney Learning Center every day after school. They love going to computer class, the homework room, and art class. They enjoy playing in the playground located at the rear of the Center and also love going over to the Old Colony Youth Center, and play various games, such as touch football, soccer, and hoop.

They agreed that if either one of them was the President of the United States, they would provide food and shelter for the homeless and also provide

TYNAN HAPPENINGS GETTING GIRLS IN THE GAME Getting Girls in the Game or G3 is a basketball program through Shooting Touch, Inc. for girls ages 7-12. It is a free 4 week sport and social development programming at the Tynan Community Center that will offer basic fundamentals, shooting drills, ball handling, game preparation and defensive techniques. The primary goal of G3 is to provide a safe, supportive, sport-based response to barriers in girl’s health, self-esteem, and access to regularly scheduled physical activity. Also we would like to increase female participation in sports and opportunities for personal growth and success.

ROOCKIE RUGBY PLAY AND READ PROGRAM

Massachusetts Youth Rugby Organization and BCYF are partnering to provide a combination of athletic and academic fitness. For six weeks, participants will read 20 minutes each night while learning the safe, non-contact flag version of rugby. The two goals of the program are to provide students the opportunity to enjoy new books and for participants to learn a safe fun sport.

Introducing Owen and Colin Rogers Close-knit brothers enjoying life to the fullest

They keep busy in school and on the playing fields. Their love for each other is as apparent as the smiles on their faces. They like the color blue and enjoy eating pizza together while watching TV. They enjoy reading and hanging out with their friends. At the Joseph Tierney Learning Center, they do their homework, attend art classes, and go to the computer room.

Someday, they’d love to be architects, design tall buildings and make a ton of money. These two close-knit brothers are the beloved sons of Kacie and Timothy Rogers.

They are Owen and Colin Rogers.

Owen, 10, is in the fifth grade at the Perry Elementary School which is located in South Boston.

His favorite subject is reading.

In the world of sports, Owen plays

baseball for the Savin Hill Little League. He plays various positions and has a lot of fun at practice and during games. “I like getting good hits,” he said. “I feel good and it gives me confidence to work harder and stay with the game.”

Owen has been on the South Boston Boys and Girls Club swim team for two seasons and his favorite stroke is the breaststroke.

Girl’s U15, U13, U11 - $100.00, U9 Instructional - $50.00. The fee will pay for uniforms, insurance and the cost of the officials for the season.

You will need to make the full payment at the time of registration to hold a spot on the roster. Each team’s roster will have a maximum of 22 players per team, after the 22nd player you will be put on a waiting list. If you are paying by check make the check payable to South Boston Lacrosse. Last fall, Colin played in the flag football league at Garvey Park in Dorchester. In his leisure time, he plays around with his iPad or goes outside his house and plays with his friends.

The Good Friday Gospels are all the more vivid when they are contrasted with the triumphal procession into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday just six days before. That Sunday, the crowds who had come to Jerusalem that year for the Passover laid their cloaks on the streets and spread palm fronds over them as Christ rode into the Old City.

They shouted “Hosanna” to Him, an ancient expression of praise.

Bill Brett, a star in the famous Brett family of Dorchester, and longtime Boston Globe Director of Photography, will be the featured speaker at the April 11th (Saturday) monthly meeting of the South Boston Arts Association, 9:30 a.m., at the Curley Center on Day Boulevard.

Bill, who started his association with the Globe at the tender age of 10 as a paperboy, began working as a part-time photographer on the staff at age 18. During 50 years with the Globe (he retired in 2001 but continues with his daily Current Events photographs), he has photographed thousands of events and fundraisers while capturing the soul of a major city.

Since retiring, Brett has published five books of photography, the most recent is

“Boston Irish”, which he will discuss and sign copies. His first book, “Boston, All One Family,” received the 2006 President’s Award from the Urban League of Boston.

Bill received an honorary degree from the Franklin Institute of Technology in 2009. It was at the Institute that he took his only class in photography (and the rest is history).

Bill is brother to Harry Brett, photographer for the University of Massachusetts at Boston and a board member of the South Boston Arts Association, and Jim Brett, former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Candidate for Mayor of Boston in 1993.
