Battle for Gatey Continues ZBA hearing postponed to June 23

The battle lines have been drawn and re-drawn concerning the future of the former Gate of Heaven Elementary School. Those against a proposed condodeal want to see the former Catholic school transformed into a charter school, so that students in South Boston can have affordable access to quality education.

On Wednesday evening, April 15, the Tynan School cafeteria was filled with over 250 people whose desire is to see charter school students fill the rooms and

walk the corridors in the former Gatey School.

“I am in support of a charter school at this location,” said Representative Nick Collins. And so are many others. Over 1200 signatures have been collected in favor of this idea and against condo-conversion.

Many people feel that if their children don’t get accepted to Boston’s three exam schools, they simply can’t afford to send their children to private schools, like Catholic Memorial or Boston College High School, which costs thousands of dollars; indeed similar to a second annual mortgage.

munity must be heard, we must step up.

The community must stand up for justice and fight for what we believe in. This is our fight. This is our day.

“Charter schools are doing very well. We have lost many good families already,” he concluded. “Children in South Boston need a good school to go to, they depend on us and we owe them that.”

People in Southie feel that the church and the city should give the charter school alternative a shot. If the school doesn’t work out, the church could subsequently sell it to a condo-developer. But once it’s transformed into condos, there’s no going back. If the former Gatey School is leased to a specific charter school, then monies

WWW.SOUTHBOSTONONLINE.COM could be realized over time to support the church. Selling it to a developer would be a one-shot deal and perhaps sold below actual real estate value.

Some predict that if the school is converted into condos, the Gate of Heaven Church would be the next to fall victim.

That it would be engulfed and disappear under the weight of condo development surrounding it. Ironically, the old Gatey gym and rectory are among those buildings already sold and converted into expensive condos.

“We already have enough condos,” said Michael Donovan, Clerk Magistrate of Suffolk Superior Court. “We need a school for the youth in this community.

We need this alternative quality education in a charter school. This is a quality

of life issue. Our youth will be the future leaders of this community. Like Ray Flynn said, we owe it to our children.”

Extensive development has definitively transformed the landscape in Southie, the concept of “neighborhood” is dying a swift death, and as a consequence, many residents believe that saving Gatey is a just cause worth defending. They understand it is a stand necessary to stop the bleeding from within, that enough is certainly enough.

“If we just keep on building condos, we will end up as a community with a bunch of houses,” added William ‘Touchie’ McDonough. “…A bunch of houses without any heart.”

On Tuesday morning, April 21, the Boston Zoning Board of Appeals, upon

the request from the developer, deferred the hearing concerning the controversy surrounding the future of the former Gate of Heaven School, to June 23. In the meantime, constructive and transparent dialogue-pro and con-should be undertaken in earnest, between the church, the city, and community leaders concerning this matter.

Community leaders in support of a charter school urge residents with similar convictions to let their voice be heard by contacting local political and church leaders. And, they urge these residents to save the date, Tuesday, June 23, and attend the ZBA meeting to be held in Room 801 on the eighth floor in City Hall. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.

One day last week I was driving up “N” Street when a saw a guy on a bicycle riding down the street the wrong way.

About ten seconds later, I saw another.

I thought bicyclists were supposed to follow the rules of the rode just like motorists?

That brings me to the bicyclist who recently complained about the state

trooper’s police vehicle blocking the bike lane on the Longfellow Bridge. When I see a state trooper on the roadway, the last thing I’m going to do is complain to him where his vehicle is parked. Troopers remind me of the “Soup Nazi” character on the Seinfeld comedy show. Once you came into contact with him, you better not say or do anything that will get you in the soup, as they say. Same with state troopers; keep your face front and don’t

have an attitude. That bicyclist had a lot of nerve. If it was a motorist lodging the complaint, I bet you that the state trooper’s superiors wouldn’t have worried about our concerns.

As motorists, we pay for car insurance, excise taxes, inspection stickers, and for registration renewals. What do bicyclists pay for? Nothing! Yet we pay taxes so that bike lanes are painted throughout the city and for bikes and bike racks.

Somehow, I don’t think we should be paying these taxes to support the few who ride bikes in the city. If they want the exercise, let them ride their bikes while on vacation on Cape Cod. Or ride their bikes on the sidewalks like they do anyway.

And don’t tell me they’re doing it to ease our carbon footprint. It isn’t going to matter one iota unless the Chinese do something about their smog-filled cities.

Rep. Nick Collins to Host Park and Beach Clean-Up on Saturday On Saturday April 25th, State Representative Nick Collins will host South Boston’s annual Park Serve Day in conjunction with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and McCourt Construction.

Volunteers will meet at 10:00 am at Murphy Rink to clean up the parks and beaches at Pleasure Bay and Marine Park.

Collins is asking community residents, local businesses and non-profit partners to lend a helping hand to kick off this year’s park and beach season.

“With the winter we all endured, Park Serve Day is

a great way for the community to kick off the spring and summer seasons,” said Rep. Collins. South Boston is home to what is considered some of the best urban parks and beaches in the nation and Collins says the volunteer effort is important to keeping it that way. “Our parks and beaches are only as good as the people who take care of them,” said Rep. Collins. “So let’s spring into action and keep the tradition going!”

A Formal(?) Goodbye Party at The Cornerstone

‘Twas perhaps inevitable that The Cornerstone would eventually follow many other establishments at the western terminus of Broadway, in the shadow of the Kelly Bridge and all those developments. Led

by Tom Flaherty, the Flaherty family has had a great run at The Cornerstone for the past 37 years – more than three full decades and way more than a generation.

Deciding to close The Cornerstone must not have been easy; it will be missed. But it is an institution that certainly would “not go gentle into that good night.”

So a party was most definitely called for. And what a swell party it was, last Saturday evening from late afternoon until … People kept coming in; no one seemed to leave; hundreds were there.

There are three areas in The Cornerstone – the main bar, the booths around the main bar, and the larger room off to the left side, where everything from christening parties to baked haddock dinners to the Flaherty Kick-off Breakfast took place.

The side room was filled with dancers, who only had space to sway a bit and take an occasional sip of brewski. The rest of The Cornerstone was that old cliché: “Jam-packed shoul-

der to shoulder.”

This writer stopped by early on last Saturday, and momentum was building, but then he had to leave to perform in a play. He returned around 11 p.m., and the party was still going full steam. Everyone

seemed to know everyone else – it was that kind of a Southie crowd.

And not to worry – withdrawal will be gradual. The Cornerstone will stay open a bit longer. Perhaps until the end of April.

One last goodbye – ‘twas a great, fine party, it was.

A Friendly Reminder: The Collaborative’s Derby Day Party

Almost without exception, the Kentucky Derby, first held in 1875, is the oldest continuous sporting event in America. The only two exceptions our extensive researches of 37 minutes could find were both collegiate events – the Harvard-Yale crew race (“The Race”, 1859), and the PrincetonRutgers football game in 1869.

The first Harvard-Yale football game was also held in 1875, but it took place six months later in November. The first Derby was run in May of 1875.

So much for that.

to view this year’s 141st Run for the Roses at Barlow’s Restaurant (241 A Street) on Saturday afternoon, May 2, from 4 till 7 p.m.

This viewing is a fundraiser for the South Boston Collaborative Center – a true “Southie Time”, in other words. That tradition continues.

Help the poor people here and in the poor countries by sending them technology that would help everyone live better lives. Help poor people against ISIS. “I would build robots that would help old people in wheelchairs get around better,” he further stated. “I would build robots to babysit kids for their parents. That would be awesome. I would build tech chips to help blind people see. I would tell bad guys they get one chance to stop being bad and after that, if they don’t stop, then…they go to jail.”

Boston Youth Invited to Learn to Swim with BCYF

The third and fourth grade boys’ lacrosse team is coached by Bob Ferrara.

munity? South Boston Catholic Academy’s 6th grade Social Studies students came up with some very creative answers and showcased their hard work at South Boston Catholic Academy’s Utopian Fair.
