$400,000 in Grant Money to Go to Local Nonprofits Southie Community Organizations Set to Reap Benefits of MCCA D St Hotel Deal The Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) announced last week that they are making $400,000 in grants available to South Boston community organizations as part of a new community benefits process.

The grants are part of the community benefits (or mitigation) package negotiated by the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) and CV Properties - the developers of two new Starwood hotels which will be located on D St directly across from the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC).

Originally announced by MCCA executive director James E. Rooney in September 2013, the D St hotel mitigation package states that CV proper-

ties will contribute a total of $630,000 to the BRA to be used for community benefits. CV properties also agreed to give more than $2 million to the City of Boston to fund affordable housing and job training programs and to sponsor an innovative three year internship program for Boston high school and college students interested in real estate development and hotel operations.

best uses for that funding,” said Rooney. “All of the work we are doing on D St is driven by community impact and engagement at every level – from the D St hotel project to the Lawn on D to our plans to further enliven D St with the BCEC Expansion plan’s significant urban design components.”

Local non-profits will have until April 21, 2015 to apply for up to $100,000 in grants through a new process for distributing discretionary funds associated with community benefits being piloted by the BRA. Per a recent BRA press release, programs must demonstrate long-term benefit to the South Boston community and should address urgent needs in the community without duplicating already existing programs. Interested applicants can download an “Application for Community Benefits” form from the BRA’s website.

“This new application process will give the South Boston community equal access and opportunity to grant money resulting from new development in and around their neighborhood,” said Mayor Marty Walsh. “I

am proud that this process continues our commitment to transparency, accessibility and streamlining city government by modernizing the application process. I would also like to commend the MCCA for advocating for this funding from the D St hotel project and for continuing to keep the South Boston community top of mind throughout the BCEC expansion process.”

The D St hotel project is currently under development on a large parcel of land owned by the MCCA at 371-401 D St. Once finished – a tentative completion date of late 2015 has been set - D St will feature two state of the art, mid-price Starwood Hotels. “The Aloft

Hotel” will feature 330 rooms for business travelers and convention attendees while “The Element Hotel” will have 180 suite-type rooms available for those interested in longer term stays. Both hotels will have retail space available for lease on D St. According to information provided by the MCCA, the $150 million project has already created 500 construction jobs and will create 150 permanent jobs while the development is expected to generate $3 million annually for the City of Boston in occupancy and property taxes.

State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry, State Representative Nick Collins and Boston City Councilor Bill Linehan - as well as CV Properties President and Founder Richard Galvin and South Boston’s many active community organizations and members - as being instrumental in getting the D St hotel deal done while also maximizing the potential benefits to the South Boston community. “We owe a special debt of gratitude to Father Joe White who chaired the Design Advisory Committee (DAC) process that focused on the hotel development over a year-long series of meetings,” said Rooney.

And while South Boston residents may have to wait a bit more time to reap the rewards of the community benefit grants, those who have visited the hugely popular and recent “BostInno 50 on Fire 2014” award winner “The Lawn on D” have already seen the D St Hotel mitigation deal in action. The Lawn on D was born from a stipulation made by the MCCA in the mitigation deal in which they agreed to develop a vacant parcel of land adjacent to the BCEC to experiment with innovative public and private use of outdoor event space.

Jim Rooney, Named to Massachusetts Lodging Association Hall of Fame

Rooney honored for demonstrated history of excellence in hospitality industry Boston, MA – Yesterday, the Massachusetts Lodging Association (MLA) recognized James E. Rooney, executive director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA), for his demonstrated history of excellence in the hospitality industry by naming him to the MLA Hall of Fame. At the awards reception, Rooney was specifically being honored for his dedicated work in promoting the Commonwealth’s travel and tourism efforts.

The MLA is a trade association representing the lodging industry, tasked with creating and implementing a program to develop the business and leisure travel industry in Massachusetts. In addition, the association strives to provide professional development of its members and create a better business environment through legislative efforts. Members include 400 active properties, such as hotels, resorts, and inns, 200 companies that provide services to the lodging industry, and 15 colleges and universities that have hospitality programs.

Rooney has led the MCCA since 2003 – he was named the executive director while also overseeing the construction of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Since then, MCCA bookings

have exceeded projections, with conventions at Boston facilities now generating more than $500 million in economic impact for the Commonwealth each year.

Currently, Rooney is leading the 1.3 million-square-foot BCEC expansion plan as well as facilitating the development of three new hotels and two new parking garages in the South Boston Waterfront.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by an organization that is doing extremely important work for the hospitality industry in Massachusetts,” said Rooney. “The MLA understands the value of the meetings and conventions industry and has always been a strong champion of the work we do at the MCCA. I’m grateful for their continued partnership and for this incredible recognition.”

Mt. Washington Bank Assumes New Name Bank President Ed Merritt announces a decision recently (and carefully) made. In 2010, Mt. Washington Bank merged with East Boston Savings Bank. The Mt. Washington name was retained.

Due to extremely healthy growth and a desire to maintain the same high level of service at all branches, it now makes business sense to combine the names under “East Boston Savings Bank”.

South Boston Online interviewed Bank President Ed Merritt this week about changing the name of Mt. Washington Bank to that of its parent institution, “East Boston Savings Bank”.

He mentioned a lot of reasons. First, all of the Mt. Washington customers that he spoke with supported the change.

“It’s about time.” was the comment he heard most frequently. That includes Ed himself, who said, “I 110% agree that it’s time to do this.”

As you know, businesses typically plan several years ahead – often as long as five years. Well, the merger of Mt. Washington Bank into East Boston Savings Bank took place five years back. It’s time to update the combined

bank’s business plan.

One reason for a new business plan is the tremendous growth of the Mt. Washington Bank Division: from $380 million ($380,000,000) in deposits to a very healthy $950 million ($950,000,000) over the last five years.

And along with Mt. Washington Bank being successful, so has East Boston Savings Bank.

That has led to an unexpectedly large number of new branch banks. Ed mentioned that the combined bank now has 27 branches, and expects to have 30 by year-end. A new branch is already set for Morrissey Boulevard. The City of Boston will – now

Despite the name change, Ed takes pride in saying, “Hey, we’re growing fast, but we don’t act like a big bank.”

All of the Bank’s external functions and activities will continue – the 5K Road Race in the fall, various youth activities, the Bank’s Foundation, and the Bank’s many other community activities.

An informational letter about the name change will be sent to all the Bank’s customers soon; the existing signage will be changed over to “East Boston Saving Bank” early in May. Ed compared this change to a book that gets a new cover – what’s inside the book remains the same. At the end of this interview, he joked that the only other things that will change are those popular green Mt. Washington pens.

So hang onto them; they could become collector’s items.

Rita McCarthy to Receive John W. McCormack Award The South Boston Citizens Association is pleased to announce that the John W. McCormack Award will be presented to Rita F. McCarthy at the SBCA’s 135th Annual Banquet on Friday, March 13, at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.

Ms. McCarthy, a South Boston resident, was a public servant for more than 40 years, 36 in the probation department. Rita was raised on G Street with four brothers and credits her parents for encouraging service in the public sector.

While in high school, Ms. McCarthy began her journey in public service as a secretary in the probation department at South Boston’s District Court. Upon graduating college, Ms. McCarthy became a probation officer in Dedham District Court. In 1982, she was promoted to Assistant Chief Probation Officer at Dedham and was promoted to Chief Probation Officer in 1987. At the time, Ms. McCarthy became the state’s first female Chief Probation Officer in Norfolk County, the third in the state, and held that position for twenty-five years until her retirement in 2012.

Throughout her career in the

Court System as a probation officer, Assistant Chief and Chief, Ms. McCarthy was praised by her colleagues for mentoring and training probation officers. As a result of her guidance and tutelage, five of her protégés went on to become chief probation officers.

Tom McGrath, President of the SBCA, said, “Her education, management and leadership skills are a blue print for others to follow.

It is an honor for the Association to recognize Rita for her outstanding service to the Public for over 40 years.”

In addition to her daily responsibilities, Ms. McCarthy was also a leader amongst her peers, having served as the President of the Massachusetts Chief Probation Officers Association. She also served as a board member for the American Probation and Parole Association, the New England Council on Crime and Delinquency and the National Association of Probation Executives.

In 2012, Ms. McCarthy assisted in the implementation of the First Veterans Court in Massachusetts.

She also continues to serve on the Board of Directors for the Boston Alcohol Safety Action Program.

Rep. Collins Lauds Mayor Walsh for Choice of BPS Superintendent Earlier this month, Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the Boston School Committee received the final four recommendations for the next Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools (BPS).

After an 18-month search including eight community forums and over 40 hours of interviews, Dr. Tommy Chang of Los Angeles was chosen and affirmed by the Mayor and the Boston School Committee as the next BPS Superintendent on Tuesday night.

State Representative Nick Collins, Chairman of the Boston Delegation had the opportunity to meet each candidate. “Each candidate for Superintendent was impressive in their own right and would have served

Boston’s schools well. But Mayor Walsh and the School Committee made the right choice in Dr. Tommy Chang. Having graduated from a public high school, I value a quality public education and I support the decision of Mayor Walsh on his selection”, said Rep. Collins.

In July, Chang will take over for outgoing Interim Superintendent John McDonough.

“It is a new day for Boston’s public schools and I would like to welcome Dr. Chang to Boston. I also want to thank current Superintendent John McDonough for his many years of wisdom, leadership and dedicated service to the children and families of Boston,” concluded Rep. Collins.

They are Leo J. Fahey of Pipefitters LU 537 and Noreen Rosher, President of City- Side Association The first of the 2015 Shamrock Awards will be presented to Leo Fahey, for his selfless efforts in aiding those in need, and pitching in at the drop of a hat, for any benefit or worthy cause in South Boston.

Leo is the Business Manager/ Financial Secretary Treasurer of Pipefitters Association Local Union 537. The highest elected office held within Local 537. Leo is currently serving his second, three year term.

Leo has been elected and serves as Trustee, overseeing the three Union Trust Funds since 2007; as a trustee, Leo oversees all of the trust investments and negotiates contract improvements. In addition to overseeing the trust itself, for the Educational Trust, Leo oversees the curriculum, interviews teachers, and interviews and selects candidates for the apprenticeship program.

Noreen was born, raised and still resides in South Boston. She attended Gate of Heaven School and graduated from Cardinal Cushing High School. Her community service began 28 years ago at both St. Augustine School and Church when her son Kevin began attending the school.

Noreen began working at St.Augustines as a teacher’s assistant for 7 years, and then moved on to become the schools secretary.

She spent many hours working on fundraisers for school organizing adult and children dances, variety shows, and the annual turkey shoot.

She worked closely with the late Father Lane to help the junior high students fundraise and attend ski trips, Six Flags and New York City trips. She also worked with Fr. Lane on Family Masses especially during Christmas and Easter.

Some of the causes and events that Noreen has been involved with: Committee for the SB Fire Fund, Helped

with Breast Cancer fundraisers, involved with the committee for the Collaboration of both SB Catholic Schools and Churches. “I have known Noreen for well over 30 years and she is most deserving of this award. She never hesitates to get involved in something she believes in, especially if it involves the quality of life in South Boston.” McGrath stated.

With her deep roots with the St.Augustine Parish, she got deeply involved with trying to save St. Augustine School and Church.

When the neighborhood lost both the school and church, Cityside Neighborhood Association was formed. The group was founded by Tom Miller, Christine Mullen and Noreen in April of 2005.

They are celebrating their10th Anniversary this coming April. The group started out as Tom Miller – President, Christine Mullen – Vice President and Noreen was Secretary/Treasurer. After 2 years Tom resigned as president due to work conflicts and she was elected as president and has been ever since.

Throughout the years, Cityside has been very active in the community. They have helped with Katrina victims, ran block parties to bring neighbors together andhelp promote quality of life issues important to them in South Boston. She has attended countless meetings in the neighborhood for public safety, abutters meetings and development meetings over the past 10 years.

Nearly 12 years ago after St. Augustine School closed she was hired at St. Brigid School, now known as South Boston Catholic Academy.

It gives me great pleasure to announce these awards,” said McGrath. “These are truly dedicated and committed individuals who have contributed so much in their own unique ways. It is fitting for the Citizens’ Association, and the South Boston community, to honor these individuals.”

The awards will be presented at the Association’s 135th Annual Evacuation Day Banquet, to be held on Friday evening, March 13th, at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Nicole Bollerman to Receive John “Joe” Moakley Award The SBCA President Tom McGrath is pleased to announce that the John “Joe” Moakley Award for Outstanding Citizenship will be presented at the South Boston Citizens’ Association 135th Annual Banquet on Friday, March 13th at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.

This year’s honoree is Nicole Bollerman, a South Boston resident and an elementary school teacher at UP Academy in Dorchester. Ms. Bollerman is a graduate of Stonehill College in Easton, MA and was awarded the Walter A. Devine Excellence in Education Award for distinction in teaching.

Upon graduation, Ms. Bollerman taught second at third grade at the Imagine Hope Charter School in Washington, D.C. and was recognized as their Teacher of the Year.

After joining the faculty of UP Academy, Ms. Bollerman worked tirelessly to design and implement a curriculum that caused tremendous gains in areas of mathematics and English among her students.

This year, Ms. Bollerman won the Capitol One WishForOthers Campaign, which invited people across the country to submit a wish that that a sponsor could grant. Ms. Bollerman’s wish was for students, which read: “I’m a third-grade teacher in a low-income, high-risk elementary school in Boston, MA. My wish for others is that my voracious, adorable, hardworking, loving scholars all leave for their December break

with a book in their hand.”

Ms. Bollerman’s wish was granted by Capital One which donated books for her students at UP Academy. Ms. Bollerman also received a grand prize of $150,000 for her submission which she immediately donated to her school.

Ms. Bollerman’s selfless act received national recognition when she was invited to be a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres Show which highlighted Ms. Bollerman’s dedication to her school and her students. Ms. Bollerman was also surprised with donations for UP Academy from the Ellen Show, which included a $25,000 donation to the school, backpacks and supplies for every student and gift cards for every student and faculty member.

Religious Education News The students in the Gate of Heaven, St. Brigid, St. Monica and St. Augustine Religious Education Program have been learning about Jesus’s Life and His example for us. During Lent God gives us an opportunity to Grow and Change as we strive to put into practice the lessons we have learned.

This past Sunday being the Second Sunday of Lent, the students in the Kindergarten and First Grade classes listened to the story about the mysterious transformation of a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly. We talked about the ways people Grow and Change and the things the children are doing during Lent as they strive to be better people and to grow closer to God. We, also, planted marigold seeds which we will watch Grow and Change and by taking good care of our plants during the remainder of Lent, we are hoping to have beautiful flowers for Easter.

All are welcome to come to the 10:30AM Family Mass at St. Brigid Church, on East Broadway, this coming Sunday, March 8, 2015 and to join our Third Grade Religious Education students after Mass, in Cushing Hall, under St. Brigid Church, for their Hot Cocoa Fundraiser. South Boston Squirt B’s Capture the Bronze The South Boston Squirt B’s competed in the CHE tournament in Lake Placid, where they took home the Bronze medal!

The team kicked off their tournament early Friday morning in the USA rink at the Olympic Center against the Delaware Ducks, where they captured their first win 5-4. These boys and girls were pumped and ready to continue onto the next team.

Their next game was scheduled later that evening at the Saranac Rink where they were looking to try and win the next one against Messena, NY. Southie went out scoring numerous goals, standing strong on defense and helping their goalie to give them the 8-5 win over Messena. Leading into Saturday they were 2-0 and scheduled for a double header.

With some downtime in the morning until their first game, most of the families went out and

enjoyed some site seeing including bob-sledding, dog-sledding and public skating on the oval circle. What an experience for these kids, so what if it was -17 degrees outside, they wanted to see it all! After a coldm fun filled morning, back to the bus they went and off to the USA rink for the big game against Cranston. If they win this game they could clinch a spot in the GOLD

medal game, ohhh the thought of playing in the 1980 rink they thought. After what was a tight game through 2 periods with a score of 2-2, Cranston pulled through in the 3rd with a game winner beating Southie 6-4. This puts them at 2-1 getting ready to play Milton who was undefeated with a 3-0 record and only letting up 2 goals against their prior opponents. They were ready, they had to go out and give it their all. Milton pulled out another upset, beating the SB Squirt B’s and knocking them to the Bronze Medal game. Saturday night was the 35thAnniversary show for the 1980 Miracle on Ice team. All the players from SBYHL were invited to watch

the raising of Bob Suter’s jersey and listen to the 1980 Olympic Team speak about their journey, their coach and what it was like to play with each other. What a great night! After a long day and having lost both games, the team headed back to the hotel for some much needed rest. Sunday morning was the Bronze medal game and they wanted it. They packed up, headed for the bus and to the USA rink they went.

They were playing Messena, NY for the bronze. As the team got ready, they watched the SB Bantam team take a strong lead in their gold medal game, which gave them some fire to go out and do the same. Southie went out and scored 2 quick goals but Messena answered right back scoring 3 but at the end of 3 Southie pulls out the 5-3 win to the Bronze! What a game, what a weekend, what a team and what a great experience they had! Congratulations to these boys and girls who not only made their parents and families proud but also SBYH. They represented with respect, great sportsmanship and most importantly went out and enjoyed every minute of every game!

Pee Wee A’s Take Home the Bronze!

The Pee Wee As had a great time playing in the American Cup Tournament in Lake Placid, going 2-1-1 for the weekend, and bringing home the bronze. They played some of the best hockey they have played all season long, and should be very proud of themselves for representing South Boston Youth Hockey so well. Moreover, they

had an awesome time bonding both as a team, and with the other SBYH PeeWee, Bantam, and Squirt teams that also played in the tournament. It was a memorable weekend for the entire league.

The Pee Wee A’s got to spend time bobsledding at the Olympic Sports Complex, tubing at Mount Van Hoevenberg, skating around

Enjoying Lake Placid Bantam A team captures the gold medal while the other Southie teams all win bronze medals

Recently, five teams from the South Boston Youth Hockey League competed in the American Cup Tournament held at Lake Placid. The Bantam A team won the gold medal. And, the Squirt B, the Pee Wee A, B, and C teams won bronze medals. It was a tremendous tournament, a trip these kids, coaches and families will treasure for a lifetime.

This tournament coincided with the 35th anniversary of the USA “Miracle on Ice” game when the American team won Olympic Gold against the Russian juggernaut. Local legends Jack O’Callahan and Mike Eruzione were on hand to reminiscence about this glorious chapter in American Olympic hockey history. They drew great applause from all those in attendance.

The Bantam A team was inspired by head coach Timmy Murphy, who was assisted by Brendan Flynn and Bobby McGarrell.

They won all four games to win their divisional tournament title. They defeated a team from Cranford, New Jersey and beat the Pittsburgh Predators twice.

Then, they faced off against a team from Cornwall, Ontario, the Seaway Valley Rapids squad, in the championship finals.

“The team faced a formidable opponent from the hockey mad country of Canada,” Coach Tim-

othy Murphy said. “Cheered on by the other four Southie teams, the Bantam A’s would not be denied their gold medal. Using our team speed and creativity, the Southie team simply wore down the Canadians and captured the Gold with a 4-1 win.”

The Pee Wee B team was overseen by head coach Bobby McGarrell, assisted by Mike Murray and Chris Crowley. The team had a great time during tournament games and while enjoying resort activities.

“The boys played their hearts out,” said Coach McGarrell. “But more importantly they acted in a sportsmanlike manner on the ice and as gentlemen during their entire stay. It wasn’t all about hockey. Enjoying themselves with resort activities, getting a break from the city and playing against teams from others states, was a great experience for them.”

The Squirt B team’s head coach was Joe Burke, assisted by Bob Picard. Their first foe was the Delaware Ducks and our kids won 5-4. Later that day, they

defeated Messena, New York, 8-5. The next day before their games, the kids had some fun.

team manager. “But they played like gold with teamwork and sportsmanship. It was a great time. In addition to an amazing hockey experience, these teammates and their families had the opportunity to enjoy the true Olympic spirit.”

The Pee Wee A team was led by head coach Mark Medico, assisted by Mike Walsh and Frank Murray.

Kaitlin Miller, the Pee Wee A manager, was proud of her ice warriors.

“The team had a great time playing in the American Cup tournament,” said Miller. “They played some of the best hockey they have played all season long, and should be very proud for representing South Boston Youth Hockey so well. Moreover, they had an awesome time bonding both as a team and with the other SBYHL teams that played in the tournament.”

Taking Home the Gold Tim Murphy

After a long trip from Southie on a snowy Thursday afternoon, the Bantam A’s opened the tournament that night with a hard fought 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Predators.

Led by the goal scoring of the player of the game Brian Cloherty, Jack Flaherty and Peter Welch and the timely saves by Bobby McGarrell, the team started the tournament on the right foot. The defense, led by the late addition of Patrick Cunniff, stood tall in front of McGarrell and repelled rush after rush by the Pittsburgh team.

With no rest for the weary, the team was back at it the next afternoon versus Cranston, NJ and the game was a chess match between the two goalies. The Cranston goalie flinched first as Brian Cloherty collected a rebound from a blistering Peter Welch shot and McGarrell made sure that was all the team needed. After an all-out shift concluding by drawing a penalty, player of the game Peter Welch provided an insurance goal on the power play to erase any doubt about the outcome. Cam O’Connell was instrumental in ensuring the game stayed in Southie’s favor with a constant fore-check and ferocious back-checking. On the back-end, Mike Kenneally made sure any Cranston scor-

ing opportunity was one and done by clearing numerous pucks out and creating break outs using his skating ability to transition from the defensive zone to the neutral zone.

After two solid wins, the Southie Bantam A’s met up with a familiar opponent in the semi-finals in the Pittsburgh Predators.

Southie wasted no time in dictating the pace of the game and the relentless onslaught resulted in a quick 4-1 lead after two periods led by the goal scoring of the player of the game Linden Cox, a beautiful individual goal by Jon Giannone, and goals by Peter Welch and Brian Cloherty. Pittsburgh would not be denied the chance to make it interesting at the end and scored two goals in the third period to make it a game.

Mac Casper, playing a defensive minded center and John Orton, playing a shut-down, physical defense, made sure Southie would not be denied a spot in the championship by using their speed and puck possession skills to clear the defensive zone time after time to hold on for the 4-3 win.

In a battle against sore legs, the Southie Bantam A’s played their fourth game in as many days and faced a very formidable opponent from the hockey mad country of Canada. Playing on the 1980 Miracle on Ice rink and cheered on by

the other four Southie teams, the Bantam A’s would not be denied their gold medal. Using their team speed and creativity, the Southie team simply wore down the Canadians and captured the gold medal with a 4-1 win. Peter Welch and Brian Cloherty continued their scoring streaks with goals and Jonathan Kelley was finally rewarded for a weekend of hard work and determination with a tough, in front of the net rebound goal for the gamewinner. James McDonnell played the game of the tournament on defense by never allowing any opponents to get past him and creating numerous scoring opportunities with his Bobby Orr like rushes. After one of his highlight rushes in the third, McDonnell iced the game with an ice-length empty

netter. Jack Flaherty consistently cleared the lanes for all his teammates all game with his physical play. Bobby McGarrell made sure that the four goals was more than enough and his play at the 1980 rink would have made Jim Craig proud.

For their efforts, peter Welch was awarded the player of the game for the second time and Brian Cloherty solidified his reputation as the best player in the tournament with the tournament MVP. The coaches Tim Murphy, Brendan Flynn and Bobby McGarrell would like to thank everyone from the neighborhood, the parents and the other Southie teams for the support the team received, but would especially like to thank Tim Buckley and the Quiet Man fund.
