Butler Memorial Scholarship South Boston Graduates Eligible for $5,000 Award The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today announced that applications are being accepted for the 2015 Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship honoring the memory of Tommy Butler, the long-time Massport Director of Government and Community Affairs and son of South Boston. The $5,000 Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to a student who resides in South Boston, is graduating from high school, is engaged in community service, and has been accepted to an accredited college or univer-

sity by the submission deadline.

Students interested in applying for the Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship must submit an essay of 1,000 words describing their interest in pursuing one of the fields of study described above or how their community service has affected their outlook on life. Autism is a complex neurological disorder characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties and additional patterns of behavior. Like many neurological diseases, there is presently no cure for Autism, but that has not stopped many courageous parents and caring citizens in coming together to fight for a new day for millions of affected young people throughout the world. I have personally witnessed the work of Autism Speaks, an organization committed in helping families with needy and beautiful children who suffer from various illnesses.

As I have often said, “with God and research, all things are possible.” I am convinced that we will

eventually be able to help these special children.”

Attending the first International Conference on Adult Stem Cell Research at the Vatican, I heard numerous medical experts and scientists talk about the hope of stem cell nutrition and medicine.

Even the Pope himself spoke with us about the Catholic Church’s continued commitment to adult stem cell research. My journey in helping children with various brain diseases has taken me to various leading medical research centers in the world, including the National Institute of Health in Maryland. But I have to admit, that while I admire the effort that is being made in finding medical solutions to help these children, I found a total lack of commitment by our national political leaders in providing the necessary research dollars to enhance a medical breakthrough. Not sur-

prisingly, if your cause, as worthy as it is, if you are not well organizes, your voice gets crowded out in the Washington corridors of power.

Fortunately, there is at least one group who continues the fight for research and hope for these concerned families and needy children. It’s our own Local 25 of the Teamsters Union. Under the leadership of President Sean O’Brien, this union has been in the forefront of the national movement to help these kids. Their compassionate efforts will be evident on Saturday night at the Teamsters Autism Gala at the Inter Continental Boston Hotel in Boston.

David O. Russell, acclaimed Hollywood writer and director will be honored for his years of dedicated support in the fight to find a cure for Autism. The other honoree will be Malden Police Detective Steve Mulcahy in helping a young

boy in Malden with Autism.

The Teamsters Union has been a major advocate on behalf of needy children in the area and parents are deeply appreciative of their efforts. Their Challenge baseball League, which they sponsor, brings great fun and pride to so many handicapped and special needs children during the Spring and Summer. They also just started a soccer league in the area. As one of its coaches, I can personally see the importance of competition and sportsmanship which sports brings to these needy children. But this worthy effort would not be possible, without the leadership of Sean O’Brien. What a night it will be Saturday in Boston. America’s leading film maker and most caring union leader in bringing us together to help find medical solutions for God’s children and our friends.

Mayor Walsh Urges Boston Families to Plan for Summer Now BCYF’s FREE Summer WarmUp Resource Fair April 11th Highlights Programs Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF), the City of Boston’s largest youth and human service agency, invite Boston youth and families to “BCYF Summer Warm-Up”, a free resource fair to help jump-start summer planning. It will be held on Saturday, April 11th, at the BCYF Tobin

Community Center, 1481 Tremont Street, Mission Hill, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“The summer is an important time for young people to be learning, engaged, making new friends and connecting to caring mentors,” said Mayor Walsh.

“The Summer Warm Up is an opportunity for Boston families to learn about all that BCYF has to offer this summer and make plans now.”

The goal of the event is to con-

nect Boston children, teens and families with information about BCYF’s summer camps and programs, youth employment opportunities, teen nights and activities, and community events during the summer. The Summer Warm-Up will have a carnivallike atmosphere with balloons, music, activities and mostimportantly--resource tables.

There will also be raffle prizes including $100 scholarships to a BCYF summer program. Most

programs are enrolling and this event provides all kinds of information about what’s available.

not go up the old locks and into the upper portion of the river. Tours will still run 75 to 80-minutes in length.

Due to this adjustment in the water portion of the tour, Boston Duck Tours will be offering an unbelievable deal of 50% off all their ticket prices. These prices have not been seen since 1996, two years after Boston Duck Tours opened. The tour will still be the amazingly entertaining and fun experience that the public has been able to enjoy in the past but with a shorter water portion and an amazing discount.

McDevitt Honored at Paraclete Reception

It was an outstanding event – simply outstanding. In each of recent years, Paraclete has held its Annual Reception at Boston College High School. The precise place was the B.C. High rotunda, which is sited in front of a stage that serves both the rotunda and the student cafeteria in the back. The rotunda is adorned with nearly 200 national flags.

The crowd appeared to number 500 or so – perhaps more than that.

The hors d’oeuvres were a symphony to dining that was both elegant and extremely nourishing. Wild mushrooms, anyone? Music, great company, many auction items, and a right-on-point program topped off

the evening.

Paraclete is an after-school educational enrichment program for South Boston’s urban youth. At Paraclete, education not only supports individual success, it also contributes to a just, peaceful society.

It is located in the historic old St. Augustine Convent on E Street.

The evening’s program began with touching video, which featured a young photograph of the evening’s Honoree – Paul McDevitt. Eileen DeMichele, Paraclete’s Executive Director, served as the program’s emcee. Founders Barry Hynes (with a bushy gray beard) and Sr. Ann Fox spoke briefly, specifically mentioning Paul’s generosity.

Three young Paraclete students – Tianna Lutan, Evan Markos, and

Asiatouy Diallo – gave short meaningful talks, guided by the Paraclete Principal Jackie Parker. Those kids were good – well-spoken, and all three demonstrated they had nice senses of humor.

Mayor Marty Walsh showed up toward the end of the evening.

His remarks were centered on the removal of parking space savers after our record-breaking storm. He redeemed himself by auctioning off “A Breakfast with the Mayor”, and was successful enough to sell two of them, raising a welcome $5,000 for Paraclete.

In accepting his award, which is formally entitled the Paraclete 2015 Founders’ Award, Paul McDevitt made it a point to read a “disclaimer” from Suzanne Bump, Paul’s wife

and the Commonwealth’s Auditor.

That brought several bouts of laughter. The audience loved it.

But Paul is seriously dedicated to his life’s work. He’s a graduate of B.C. High, Boston College, and UMass Boston (an M.A. in Education). His company, Modern Assistance Programs (MAP) helps countless individuals struggling with substance abuse and mental health problems. Paul made several poignant references to his work in recovery and to his own recovery.

Board member Pat Bradley and the Paraclete students closed out the evening with a “pointed” but humorous invitation to bid on the auction items. “Give so ya don’t get hurt!” – spoken like true South Bostonians.

REVIEW: “Hidden Faces of Courage”; “A Lot on Our Minds”

In addition to their well-known studio arts, our neighbors in South Boston’s Fort Point District continue to develop forward-looking performing arts. A prime example is the ongoing production run by O.W.L.L. (On With Living and Learning, Inc.) of the staged reading, “A Lot on Our Minds”, followed by the dramatized documentary, “Hidden Faces of Courage”.

This reviewer saw O.W.L.L.’s production last weekend and strongly recommends going to see it for yourself. A few details: The remain-

ing four performances are in the excellent small theater space at the Cambridge “Y”, across Mass Avenue from Cambridge City Hall - tonight at 7:30, Thursday, March 26; tomorrow at 7:30, Friday, March 27; and Saturday, March 28, at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. (two performances).

Goings On – March, 2015 Many, many events went on in South Boston during March that had little or nothing to do with St. Patrick’s Day or Evacuation Day (no kidding!). Here are a few that South Boston Online covered before, during, and after our St. Patrick’s Day and Evacuation Day “Season”.

Several signs of spring are unique to South Boston. One of these is the disappearance of “Space Savers” for that precious parking slot. Some space savers are so original that they are really outdoor sculptures – commonly called “installations” in this day and age. But orange cones, followed closely by old lawn furniture, are still the most popular.

Another actual, accurate, and defi-

nite sign of spring is the opening of Sullivan’s (with two shamrocks on either side of their sign) on Castle Island. Their 2015 opening took place on Saturday morning, February 28, at 9:30 a.m. Both humans and seagulls lined up for coffee and breakfast.

Tom Flaherty’s B and K place, The Cornerstone, on the lower end of West Broadway got a final workout during March, before it closes sometime in the Spring.

You are all aware that Michael Flaherty is one of Boston’s four City Councilors-at-Large. He is running again and held a rally/fundraiser Thursday evening, March 5, at The Cornerstone. It was jam-packed and a good time was had by all. Of course, Michael’s “time” had an Irish theme, including a performance

To switch venues rapidly and completely, Susan Nalband opened the most recent exhibition at her 555 Gallery (555 East Second Street, Fine Art Contemporary Photography). She entitled this exhibition “I Love Your Space”. The photographs themselves and the way in which Susan curated and hung this exhibition merit descriptive words such as “Striking” and “Stunning”. Put it on your schedule – 555 Gallery is a real addition to the South Boston scene.

You have likely heard the name of South Boston newest new business – “Lifted Fitness”. Lifted Fitness has been informally open since the first of the year; its formal opening took place on Saturday evening, March 7, in an artfully designed location at 803 Summer Street. Also on March 7, it was back to The Cornerstone again. The occasion was the fundraising party for South Boston’s “Special Shamrocks”. This is an organization that brings joy to the lives of special children – so special that they need extra care and attention. And to think that The Cornerstone opened South Boston’s 2015 “Season” with the Jimmy Fla-

herty Kickoff Breakfast on February 28. It has truly been a great run there – this Spring of 2015 is The Cornerstone’s “Last Hurrah”.

Dan McCole, South Boston’s Watercolorist Laureate, spent his time during the record snowfall painting the heroes of the Patriots’ Super Bowl win. He captured Butler’s game-ending interception, an iconic touchdown spike by The Gronk, and a piercing glance (yes, we mean PIERCING!) from Coach Bill Belichick. Will the Brady/ Belichick duo bring home a record fifth Lombardi Trophy next year?

Clearly, the snowfall in Boston set records. The record was broken the Sunday night after the St. Patrick’s/ Evacuation Day Parade, when a few additional inches raised the total this winter to 108.6! The old record from the winter of 1995-1996 was 107.6.

Back to the Future: Spring in 2015 arrived in South Boston on Friday, March 20, at 6:45 p.m. – just 11 minutes before sunset that evening.

Did you watch for it? Or did Friday evening’s Spring snow get in your way? That snow dropped one or two more inches on us, making this winter’s total a clearly new record of around 110 inches – nine feet, two inches, that is. That’s about the height (nine feet, plus a few inches) of Goliath, David’s gigantic opponent in the Old Testament.

South Boston Catholic Academy News Highlights of our Celebrating 100 Days of School and Dr. Seuss’ Birthday The children in K2A celebrated a big milestone in kindergarten.

They celebrated the 100th day of school. The children made 100th day crowns, created pictures of what they would look like at 100 years old, used 100 Legos to create a structure, made a 100 unifix cube train and built a pyramid using 100 cups. Each child brought in a collection of 100 things, some including 100 M&Ms, 100 ladybugs, 100 gumballs, and many more. 100 is a big number and the one hundredth day of school is a big deal in kindergarten.

The children also celebrated Dr. Seuss and his wonderful books on March 2, 2015. The children really enjoy reading his books. They cre-

ated their own “Cat in the Hat” hat.

K2B students celebrated 100 days of school on Feb. 26. We have been anxiously counting the days since September and learned many Math skills in the process. We made 100 day books, crowns and worked with our classmates to count out 100 items. We had a special 100 piece snack, taking 10 pieces from 10 different snacks.

March 2 we observed Dr. Seuss’s birthday. We read many of his wonderful books and watched videos of other Dr. Seuss stories on our Apple TV. The children graphed their favorite Seuss books and we found that “Cat in the Hat” is the most favorite. Rhyming with Dr. Seuss has had a huge influence on promoting early reading skills over the years. Thank you Dr. Seuss!

their 100th day of school. We began counting on September 3. We tallied 100 days of school, charted 100 days of weather, discovered different ways to make 100 cents, as well as, other activities. We read “The Lost Lamb” which is based on the Bible passage, “The Good Shepherd”.

Since the shepherd had 100 sheep, it tied in perfectly with our Religion program. The two highlights to our big day; our pancakes and sausage breakfast (arranged on each child’s plate to look like the number 100) and each child decorated a tee shirt or a hat with 100 items. Our 100th day of school was a wonderful celebration!

March 2 is Dr. Seuss’ birthday. 1A did an author study on Dr. Seuss and had a reading marathon with so many of his books. The highlight of our day was making a “Cat in the Hat” hat and doing a special project

with our fourth grade book buddies.

A fun and enriching day was had by all!

The children in Grade 1B kept track of the number of days of school. On the 100th Day, the children showed HOW they are smart. They worked in small groups with 100 M&Ms to answer questions and had to tell HOW they did their project. This included some sorting, skip counting and listening to each other’s ideas. They also enjoyed playing 100 Word Bingo! They wore their 100th Day hats proudly.

We have been adding to our list of biographies that we have read. The children listened to the story of Dr. Seuss on the Smartboard and wrote down facts on their Dr. Seuss Hats and then wore them to test each other on their spelling words while they played Green Eggs and Ham Tic Tac Toe.

On Sunday, March 8, at the Walsh Center gym, the Sister Pat All-Star squad defeated the Father White All-Star team, 22-18. It was a closely-contested game and only the game clock was Father White’s nemesis, as their bid for a comeback fell short as time expired.

For the Sister Pat Club, Allison McGough netted 10 points and was SBOL’S MVP of the all-star tilt. Allison McGough also played on the freshman hoop team at Boston Latin. She’s a longtime soccer and softball player. Allison is considered by her house league coach as, “An all-around player and person on and off the court…and one of the best players she has ever coached.”

Emily Harris attends Archbishop Williams in Braintree and is a member of their first seventh grade. She was the only seventh grader to make the freshman

hoop team. Emily played a role in her Christmas school play and has a dancing and singing role in an upcoming school play. Emily also plans to play softball again in the spring. Her softball team in the South Boston Girls Youth Softball League (SBGYSL) won the title five years in a row.

Rebecca Donovan attends Boston Latin School. She also plays travel hoop for Gatey and in the SBGYSL. During the Christmas vacation she attended the Dana Barros basketball camp and had a great time.

Tari Pecevich also attends Boston Latin and ran indoor track this winter while

playing on Gatey house and travel squads.

Tari plans on playing softball in the spring and is an active member of Regan’s Fitness Boot Camp.

Grace Tinlin is an Honor Roll student at the Boston Collegiate Charter School and is on their Leadership Board. Grace is an altar server as the Gate of Heaven Church.

She also plays softball in the SBGYSL and attends the Ellis School of Gymnastics.

Katherine Smyth is a straight “A” student at Boston Latin Academy (BLA) and plays saxophone in the seventh grade school band. She’s run indoor track and plans to join the crew team in the spring. Katherine is also active in the South Boston Ambassador Program and is saving for a school trip to Ireland and Scotland.

Rachel Rans also attends BLA. At school, she runs cross country, as well as indoor track and spring track and field.

“Watching these seven girls play has been an absolute pleasure,” said Coach Jimmy Geisel. “They are great kids who truly love the game and are always willing to do what it takes to benefit their teams.”

Gatey Midget All-Star Game CYO hoop program concludes fifty-first season

On Sunday, March 8, in the Gate of Heaven CYO boy’s Midget League All-Star game, held at the Walsh Center gym, the Father Paul White All-Stars, coached by James and Sean Schallmo, defeated the Sister Pat All-Stars, who were coached

by Conor Harrington.

In the first half, the teams traded baskets, with the Father White Club concentrating on keeping center Max “Shaq” Hogan, from the Sister Pat Club, from posting up, and dominating the boards. Max still managed to score four points and led all players in rebounds. This opened up scoring chances for guards Steve Flynn and Fionn Hamilton to contribute to Sister Pat’s offense. Defensively, the Sister Pat Club did a great job keeping tricky lefty, James Buzzell, from penetrating the paint.

He had just one point until he iced the game at the buzzer with a three-pointer from downtown.

And although the Sister Pat Club kept Buzzell in check for most of the game, they couldn’t contain crafty guard Owen Donovan, who led all scorers with nine points. Feisty Alex

“The season which started back in October, was year fifty-one for this famed basketball program,” said Gatey midget league commissioner, Sean Monahan.

“And we celebrated the end of the house league season in fine fashion with entertaining All-

Star games for both the boy’s and girl’s programs, and a thrilling final playoff game for the boys’ midget league. Year fiftyone certainly goes in the books as another success for Gatey.

“Our program relies on volunteers,” Monahan added. “Har-

rington, a senior at Boston College High School will be attending college next year, coached in the boys’ cadet program for four seasons. The Schallmo twins, James and Sean, have pledged to return to coaching next year to join the many high school students and former players who have volunteered to coach the younger players in the Gatey program. Greg Lally, young Sean Monahan and young George Hogan will be back too.

It’s great to see young kids, like Allison Baker, Maggie and Kathleen Hart, Allison McGough, and Charlene Evans, volunteer.

Of course, I also want to thank everyone who gives their time, energy, and heart to the program.”

PeeWee A’s:

The Pee Wee As played a couple of nail biters over the weekend, starting against Agawam on Saturday afternoon. Down 4-0 to start the 3rd, Nolan Callow, Michael Walsh, and Paddy Craddock picked up a goal apiece, Craddock scoring with just two minutes left in the game. They dropped the hard fought battle 4-3. On Sunday they played Melrose, and despite scoreless first and second periods for both teams, Southie gave up two goals early in the third. Jack Matthews was able to get the Shamrocks on the board with just a minute left in the game, but it wasn’t enough and they took a 2-1 loss. Goaltender Jack Feeney made some phenomenal saves in both games.

Squirt B’s:

The Squirt B’s had a double header this weekend and took home the W in both!

They’re currently tied for 3rd in the Valley League Central Division and gearing up for playoff positioning. On Saturday, they faced off in an 8-4 win over Medford, the current holder of 3rd place in the league. Dylan Picard wore the hat, followed by Jerry O’Neil with 2 goals and a goal a piece by Alex Fucile, Brennah Hynes and James Curry. Mae Lafferty, Michael Noonan, Sean Feetham and Eddie Tirabassi were solid on defense.

On Sunday, they faced off against Agawam and had another explosion in goals. They breezed to a 9-2 final. Terry (Tuukka) Markos was solid once again in net. Southie netted 2 goals apiece by Dylan Picard, Toby Halloran, Alex Fucile and Brennah Hynes. Jerry O’Neil finished out the scoring with one.

Tynan Community Center youngsters capture top prizes in violence prevention poster contest

The National Youth Violence Prevention Week is a weeklong national education initiative to raise awareness on effective ways to prevent or reduce youth violence. In conjunction with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Department, Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) and the Boston Police Department, violence prevention themed contests (poster for elementary students, poetry for middle school students, hip-hop video for high school students) were developed to engage Boston youths to express how they felt they could promote peace in their neighborhoods.

On Friday, March 20, at the Tynan Community Center school cafeteria, the winners of the poster contest were presented their awards along with gift cards from Target.

The first, second, and third place poster winners all came from the Tynan Community Center. Neha Kumar came in first place, Nina Kumar came in second place, and Jamali Price-Wade walked away as

the third place finisher. Tony Maiullari and Katie O’Connell helped the winning youngsters prepare their posters and did a fine job mentoring them.

On hand to present the awards were William Evans, Boston Police

Commissioner, Chris Byner BCYF Director, Ann Siegel, BCYF Chief of Staff, Sergeant Tim Gaughan, BPD C-6 Community Service Officer, as well as Kerry Ryan, Director, Community Engagement & Collaboration.

Commissioner Evans congratulated the youngsters who participated in the program and called them all winners. He told them it was important to respect each other, resolve problems peacefully, stay in school and be active.

“It’s important for you to do well in school and read a lot,” said Evans.

“Keep busy with sports and stay off the corners and out of trouble. Keep up the good work.”

Gatey’s State Champions Sixteen and under boys’ squad led by Forde, Moccio, and O’Toole capture CYO state title

The Gate of Heaven CYO basketball program will be adding another banner to their championship collection, hanging from the rafters in the Walsh gym, as the sixteen and under boys’ high school team ran the table in the CYO State Tournament.

In their first game played on Saturday, March 7, Gatey cruised to an easy victory against Saint Catherine’s of Norwood, 91-53.

Guard Emmett Forde was sensational as he netted 29 points.

James Moccio also had a tremendous game scoring 25 points.

Aidan O’Toole contributed 13 points and grabbed a handful of rebounds. Cam Downey had 8 points. Owen Cuddahy and Thomas Bohan had six points apiece, while Mike Litto and Eric Lopes each had a deuce.

Their second game was played on Sunday, March 8. Gatey faced crosstown rival Saint Ann’s of Dorchester and came through with a hard-fought 71-58 win.

Super guard Emmett Forde was in the zone again, as he scored 32 points. Aidan O’Toole came to play and netted 20 points.

James Moccio contributed nine points and Eric Lopes had four. Mike Litto, Cam Downey,

and Chris Knight had a basket apiece and played great defense.

The championship tilt was held on Sunday, March 22, at Catholic Memorial High School, against Saint Margaret-Mary’s of Westwood. The local squad won by twenty, 86-66. Again, the star guard tandem of Forde (34 pts.) and Moccio (26 pts/5 treys) proved too much for their foe. O’Toole had nine points and continued hitting the boards. Cuddahy contributed six points. Downey scored five points while Knight and Litto had three points each.

“Every player had the same goal of winning the state tournament,” said Coach John Knight. “…And they worked hard all

season long to realize their goal.

These guys have been playing together for five years now,” Coach Knight added. “And, it’s awesome to see how well they play together. Emmett Forde is an amazing point guard and playmaker, and Aidan O’Toole, Mike Litto and Eric Lopes are fantastic rebounders and great defensive players. James Moccio and Owen Cuddahy are great scorers. Chris Knight, Thomas Bohan, and Cam Downey are great shooters. Everyone contributed to the success of the team this year, and that it what makes it so special.”

Dennis Donovan Club defeats Ryan Club

BY KEVIN DEVLIN On Sunday, March 9, at the Walsh gym, the Dennis Donovan Club defeated the two-time defending champions, the Ryan Club, to capture the 2014 Gate of Heaven CYO Midget League Championship. SBOL’s Co-MVP’s was Jake Harrison, who netted 13 points, and Evan Markos, who had eight points and five assists.

The Donovan Club took an early lead and never looked back. For the Ryan Club, Ryan Hogan was terrific scoring eight points and hauling down five rebounds, while Max Mercer contributed four points in the season finale. To round out scoring for the Donovan Club, Shea Flaherty had a great game, scoring six points, while Alex Polena had four points.

“At the beginning of the season I thought we’d have a good year,” said Coach Greg Lally. “I told them this could be this year. They worked hard, won the regular season title and never looked back. They were a great bunch of kids and I had a lot of fun coaching them.”
