March 17, 2015, Well and Truly Observed The South Boston Citizens’ Association (SBCA), the Allied War Veterans Council, The High School’s JROTC Color Guard, the South Boston Historical Society, the Park Rangers, St. Peter’s School, several of Boston’s elected officials, and a number of South Boston residents came together to celebrate this March 17 in St. Augustine Chapel and on Dorchester Heights – the 239th Evacuation Day, and St. Patrick’s Day.

The rain was fairly heavy on Tuesday morning, March 17; it was cool weather to say the least.

Nevertheless, anyone

from Boston who had braved our record snowfall of 9+ feet was able to shrug it off without a single shiver. South Boston had its key holiday to observe and celebrate – the combined Evacuation Day and St. Patrick’s Day. The Evacuation Day Mass at the charming and historic St. Augustine Chapel was said by Fr. Joe White. The Gospel was from John – the parable story of the generous grower and the laborers he employed in his vineyard. Fr. Joe led the singing of “Christ Be Beside Me”, which is an inspiring combination of the tune from ”Morning Has Broken” and the words from the continued on pg 2

Should space savers be banned?

The Boston Globe recently reported that neighborhood leaders around downtown Boston are in favor of eliminating space savers completely in various downtown neighborhoods.

The idea is to impose a complete ban on all space savers and have the city trash collectors pick up cones, chairs, toilets, etc., designating the shoveledout spots. They want to eliminate the 48-hour rule that has been in place for decades. The North End has already banned space savers and now other groups are falling in line.

We suffered through a historic wintry session, and although temperatures

were frigid, people’s temperatures rose as feuds and acts of vandalism reportedly occurred. Although this downtown coalition professes to speak on behalf of certain neighborhoods only, the leaders “…Want to replicate that program elsewhere” because “We don’t think they (meaning space savers) should happen at all.”

Bottom line, they’d like-want-to eventually impose their views on this issue on the entire city. They must be liberals. They always know what’s best for the masses.

These neighborhood leaders think that by banning space savers, these problems will go away. Everything

will be solved. But I don’t think so. It will only exacerbate matters.

Let’s look at just one scenario.

When a severe storm hits, Citizen A shovels out her spot and the first time she moves her car and then returns home, the space that took her two back-breaking hours, or cost sixty bucks to have shoveled out, is gone.

Citizen B is parked there. But Citizen B was slick. He parked his car in a garage and when the coast is clear, returns to Dodge and parks in Citizen A’s spot.

Now, tell me that won’t spark controversy and completely unnerve many residents. You think egging cars, shoveling snow on other peo-

ple’s vehicles, or vitriolic exchanges have been bad in the past, if this ban was imposed in all Boston neighborhoods; it wouldn’t be a pretty sight.

This was a winter to remember and gladly forgotten, but the banning of spaces savers is likened to that cliché, “You can’t live with them and you can’t live without them.”

Somewhere in between, there has to be a solution to this problem.

And, I hope our political leaders can come up with a remedy based on pragmatic reasoning so that every citizen gets a fair shake.

Can’t live with them…can’t live without them.

3rd Youth/Adult Community Dialogue About Substance Abuse Youth and adults from South Boston will have another opportunity to share their views about the problem of substance abuse in the community and discuss ways by which, together, they can work towards a healthier South Boston. This event will take place on Thursday March 26, 2015 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Tierney Learning Center, Mercer St., South Boston.

The South Boston Community Health Center Youth Ambassadors Program is hosting this event in collaboration with the Hope & Recovery Coalition, the Gavin Foundation, the South Boston Boys & Girls Club, South Boston Neighborhood House, Laboure Center, South Boston CAN, the South Boston Action for Substance Abuse Prevention, the South Boston Collaborative Center and South Boston en Accion.

The Youth Ambassadors program is a youth development program for South Boston

youth ages 12-18. They receive leadership trainings and work on projects in the areas of community service, the arts and health, including substance abuse prevention.

Young people from the community have expressed interest in joining the conversation about substance abuse in South Boston and in finding ways to address this problem. Prior dialogues have proven very successful in offering attendees a forum to talk and learn about resources available for families affected by substance abuse.

2015 SBCA Banquet Honors Many The South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA) has memorialized Evacuation Day and its heroes for 239 years.

On Friday, March 13, the SBCA held its 135th Annual Evacuation Day Banquet, which honored achievers in the local community.

It was an elegant event. It included honored guests, such as many officers and crew members from the USS Arlington (LPD-24), an amphibious transport dock that was visiting South Boston as part of the Parade Day festivities. Gov. Charlie Baker and Mayor Marty Walsh were on hand, along with many other local elected officials.

It was the 135th Annual Evacuation Day/St. Patrick’s Day Banquet, held this year in the Convention Center. It is arranged and sponsored each year by the South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA)

City Councilor-at-Large Michael Flaherty ably served as the event’s emcee. Curragh’s Fancy provided hours of Irish music; good fellowship and corned-beef-and-cabbage ruled the roost for the evening.

Most notable were the Awards.

We can do little more than list them for you, because the accomplishments of everyone who was honored are so significant. Each one of these Awards signifies years or even a lifetime of service.

Commander Gregory Baker, USN, who commands the USS Arlington that is visiting South Boston for the Parade, received several gifts, including an American flag that had been flown over the Capitol building (despite all the scaffolding). Cmdr. Baker thanked the banquet guests for the overwhelmingly cordial welcome he, his officers, and his crew on the Arlington had so far received.

Marty Walsh brought Nicole Bollerman to the head table’s podium.

She lives in South Boston and teaches at UP Academy in Dorchester. She had not only obtained funding for a student reading program, but also won a major prize for this proposal. She donated this prize in the amount of $150,000 to her school. For this, she was awarded the 2015 John Joseph Moakley Award.

Leo Fahey is the Business Manager of Pipefitters Local # 537.

His accomplishments on behalf of working men and women, returning veterans, and indeed the entire middle class are too numerous to list here. Leo received an SBCA 2015 Jimmy Kelly Shamrock Awards from Congressman Steve Lynch.

Noreen Rosher also received a Jimmy Kelly Shamrock Award this year. She is a co-founder and charter member of the Cityside Neighborhood Association. Under her

guidance, the Association attained its tenth year of service in 2015 . Noreen also is an experienced, caring teacher, currently working at the South Boston Catholic Academy, as well as a participant in countless other community activities.

The 2015 John W. McCormack Award went to Rita McCarthy. She was the first female Chief Probation in Norfolk County, where she served 25 years until her retirement two years ago. Rita worked her way up over a 40-year period as a probation professional, and has also occupied many leadership positions in her professional organizations.

Both Parade Chief Marshal Kevin Conroy and BPD detective Rich DeVoe had Special Awards from the SBCA conferred upon them for their long years of public service.

Finally, the ladies who worked so quietly and diligently on the SBCA Banquet behind the scenes received bouquets of flowers.

Rep Nick Collins Receives 2015 Legislator of the Year Award from Children’s League of Massachusetts

Celebrated as ‘Superhero 4 Kids’ at Advocacy Day Event Last week, State Representative Nick Collins (D-Boston) accepted the 2015 Legislator of the Year award from the Children’s League of Massachusetts (CLM), a statewide non-profit association of over 80 private and public organizations and individuals that collectively advocate for public policies and quality services that are in the best interest of the Commonwealth’s children, youth and families. The ceremony was held at Nurses Hall at the Massachusetts

State House during CLM’s annual Advocacy Day event.

‘Twas a Grand, Grand Parade Day

The weather glowered and it was cold. Sunday evening, a new yearly snow record was set in Boston – 108.6 inches at Logan versus the old record of 107.6 in ’95-’96. But the precip mostly held off till the Parade was over. After that, the rain came

down, followed by nearly three inches of snow, which was enough to set the new record – numbers only a weatherman could love.

The shortened St. Patrick’s Day/ Evacuation Day Parade finished around 3:30; it marched a shorter route from Broadway Station to the Farragut statue. The crowd

then scattered to seek warmth, both external and internal, judging by the lines outside of South Boston’s busy, busy watering holes. At this time, only educated guesses can be made about the size of the crowds; they certainly numbered more than 500,000, but likely fell short of the usual million or so spectators in

prior years.

The St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day’s festivities began with the Annual Boys & Girls Club 5K Road Race, which kicked off at 11 a.m. at F and Sixth Streets by the Clubhouse.

Over a thousand (1,000) runners took part, which was less than usual because of the crowded streets.

TYNAN GYM SPRING PROGRAMS

INDOOR GOLF CLINIC YOUTH & ADULTS The Tynan gym will be offering a (6) week Indoor Golf Clinic on Wednesday evenings, beginning March 25, 2015. The clinic is sponsored by the Boston Parks & Recreation. Youth class ages 7-17 will be 6-7 p.m. and the adult class 7-8 p.m. Registration is first come, first served with a maximum of 25 participants per class. You may stop by the Tynan gym any day between 3-9pm to register. Equipment is provided, but you may bring your own clubs. INSTRUCTIONAL BASKETBALL The Instructional Basketball Program for 5-7 year olds will begin on Tuesday, March 24th from 3-4:15 pm. The program will teach children basic fundamentals of the game: dribbling, passing and shooting and be equipped with lower rims.

SAT Prep Concludes, ISEE Prep on the Way at Curley Center

This past Thursday, we concluded the first 10 session SAT Prep Course at the BCYF Curley “L Street” Teen Center. It was a great success. The group consisting of South Boston and Dorchester High School students, worked on refining their skills in vocabulary, reading, math, writing and time management skills leading to a comfort and better understanding of the SAT test.

We will be following these teens from their results of the test, to assisting in college applications, college essays and scholarship searches.

This was a very special group and who put 100% effort in. They came to the Teen Center each night prepared to work hard and participate in all facets of the class. We are sure they did their best on the SAT Test on Saturday. If they are a good example of South Boston Young Adults we are looking at a bright future, and their parents should be proud.

The BCYF Curley “L Street” Youth & Teen Center will continue to be available as a resource for teens as they move towards the college process; providing late Spring and early Fall SAT Prep classes, scholarship information, and other college and career resources.

Also, we will be announcing dates for an ISEE Prep Course beginning in September and leading to the November test.
