A
huge fire broke out explosively at 333 Summer Street in Fort Point at approximately 5 a.m. Tuesday. It went very quickly to eight alarms. Units from all over Boston responded, as remaining units moved into key positions to cover the City, in case other emergencies occurred simultaneously. Overall, about 200 first responders ended up at the blaze. Despite its intensity, the quick response succeeded in rapidly containing the fire, which was prevented from spreading to the buildings on either side. By sun-up, the blaze was under control, even though water to snuff out the remaining hot spots was poured into 333 Summer for several more hours. Summer Street remained closed off until late Tuesday afternoon, when an engineer determined that the building was in no danger of collapsing. The building was undergoing renovations at the time of the fire. Several media stated the damage was estimated at $2 million (although that seems low, considering the intensity of the fire). No injuries were reported; all of the firefighters were safe and sound when the fire ended. The firefighting efforts were absolutely superb. The Boston Fire Department deserves a great deal of praise for how they handled this major emergency.
