The tradition continues: New Year’s Day Swim

On Friday, Jan. 1, at 8:15 a.m., one of Boston’s oldest traditions will continue with an estimated 600 swimmers plunging into Boston Harbor for the annual “L Street Brownies” New Year’s Day Swim.

Hosted by the BCYF Curley Community Center, 1663 Columbia Road in South Boston, the swim takes place at the “K” Street entrance of the center.

Due to the tide schedule, the swim starts at 8:15 a.m. this year. Doors open at 7 a.m. and close at 10 a.m. Swimmers should arrive dressed to swim as the

men’s and women’s locker and shower rooms will not be available until after the swim. Water shoes are suggested due to shells and rocks left by the tide.

This event has taken place for over 100 years. The Brownies are the oldest “polar bear” swimming club in America. The Brownies promote health, fun and friendship. Each year, the swim is dedicated to past and recently deceased Brownies.

Both swimmers and spectators are welcome and creative costumes are encouraged.

Spirit of giving

Marynel Sanchez, Boston Police Department Officer Bob Lucas, and Barbara Loftus are loading bags and bags of warm winter gloves and boots in front of South Boston’s courthouse. These were given out last Wednesday, Dec. 23, to the needy and to homeless individuals in Boston. They started at the intersection of Mass Avenue and Albany Street before visiting six shelters. The giveaways were courtesy of Marie and Trevor Madjin from the Joules Company.

Editorial: Boston? Caring?

O

ne of the minor (very minor) perqs at South Boston Online is all the emails we get. Among these are frequent surveys performed by an outfit that calls itself “WalletHub.” Last week, right at the peak of the Christmas season, we received a 2015 WalletHub survey that named our beloved city of Boston as “America’s 18th Most Caring” city, out of the 100 largest American cities, which WalletHub had surveyed across our fair land.

At first, we took little notice. With all of Boston and South Boston’s many advantages, we here at Online don’t feel as if Boston deserves No. 18 in anything. Eighteen out of a 100 is only a B minus, after all. And this survey covered the year 2015 – we were on the verge of finishing a year that had seen a record 110-inch snowfall, a marvelous summer, and a record warm non-white Christmas, during which many of our home teams finished first, last, or were so close to last that it didn’t matter very much.

But there’s always a positive side to such news by email: Out of the 20 American cities in this “Most Caring” survey, Boston was the only New England city selected (maybe the WalletHub survey team

In fact, no cities in the states of New York, New Jersey, or Delaware made the top 20 “Most Caring” list. Nor did any city in Maryland; nor did Washington, D.C. – no surprise there. The cities nearest to Boston that got into that top 20 “Most Caring” were Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and two cities in Virginia – Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.

This means that Boston is the only city anywhere in the densely populated Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic areas of the U.S. that really “cares.”

We decided to look further into what was actually measured in this “Most

It’s all too easy to become addicted to these surveys. As it turns out, Bostonians are No. 17 in how much they spend on Christmas gifts for their pets. So what? Maybe part of why we are reasonably high in the “Most Caring” ranks is the fact that we are located in Massachusetts.

Our state is the 9th happiest, and the 9th most financially stable. Mas-

sachusetts is also the safest state, and possesses the best school systems.

However, we are forced to admit that the last statement seems odd, since we are no better than average (No. 25) in SAT scores, which is a well-deserved indictment of our badly lagging high schools.

As limited as these surveys are, perhaps they can serve as a platform for your New Year’s resolutions. It’s always possible to do just a little better at anything you decide to undertake. Maybe these surveys will at least provide some kind of a rough guideline on where to improve.

Here’s one last survey result: In 2015, who had the best sports fans in our nation? By a wide margin, it was Boston, of course. South Boston Online was unable to find out if David Price’s contract with the Red Sox was included in that measurement.

And on the cultural aspects of life, Boston, as well as South Boston, is off the charts.

But at year-end, this sentiment is really all that matters: From South Boston Online, have a Happy New Year. Do well in January 2016; do even better in July!

Remembering Fr. Johnson on the Centennial of his death

As we celebrate New Years Day in 2016, we note the centennial of the death of Fr. Robert J. Johnson, pastor of Gate of Heaven Parish. He died at the rectory on the evening of Jan. 1, 1916, of heart failure.

He was 73. Thus ended a remarkable pastorate that began in March 1890. Fr. Johnson was no stranger to South Boston, as his first assignment was to Sts. Peter & Paul Parish (1870-1878).

In 1878, he was appointed the

third pastor of St. Mary Parish in Dedham. During his pastorate there, he made plans for the great stone gothic church that stands today on High Street. He returned for the dedication on Sept. 9, 1900.

St. Mary’s celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2016 and many events are planned.

Upon becoming pastor of Gatey, Fr. Johnson saw the need for a new church. A fire in the old church on March 4, 1895, hastened his plans get the project going on land across from the church.The cornerstone

was laid with appropriate ceremonies on October 4, 1896. The lower church was opened for Mass on Sunday, June 17, 1900. The upper church was opened for inspection for parishioners on Sunday, Nov. 7, 1909. An informal opening with an organ concert took place on Sunday evening, March 17, 1912. Cardinal O’Connell presided at the dedication of the French gothic church on Sunday, May 12, 1912. Other building projects in his pastorate were building St. Agnes Convent and a school. He was also very involved

with civic affairs affecting the quality of life in South Boston.

Born in Ireland in 1843, he came to the United States with his parents in his youth and settled in Lowell.

He prepared for the priesthood at St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore and was ordained there by Cardinal Gibbons in June 1870.

His funeral Mass on Jan. 4 brought together an impressive gathering of clergy and public officials that included Cardinal O’Connell and Governor Walsh. He was laid to rest at St. Patrick Cemetery in Lowell.

Christmas is a holy day, after all

On Friday, Dec. 25, churches all over South Boston opened their doors, lit up their warmly decorated interiors, and put on smiles of welcome for everyone who wished to attend Christmas services in this Year of Our Lord of 2015. After all, Christmas is one of the two holiest days in the Christian Year. In addition, it follows closely behind the American Holiday of Thanksgiving.

That’s not just a harvest feast day, but also the Pilgrims’ opportunity to offer thanks to God for seeing them through an extraordinarily difficult first year in the New World.

It was a day of joyful observances.

South Boston Online couldn’t cover every one of them, nor do we have space to write them all up. But there were common threads in the ones we attended.

The classic Chapel of St. Augustine was the site of a Vigil Christmas Mass on Christmas Eve (in the Ancient Roman empire, sunset was the time a new day began, which included Christmas Day and Dec. 25). The opening hymn was “O Come All Ye Faithful,” which was then sung again in Latin – “… Venite Adoremus….” We hadn’t heard that for many years. In his homily, the Celebrant spoke of his father, who had fallen ill – it was all about family.

The evening Christmas Vigil Mass begins in the historic St. Augustine Chapel.

That evening, the HUB Church held its Christmas service at 44 D St. Carols opened the service. Pastor Charlie Dunn delivered his sermon on the Apocalypse of St. John the Evangelist, relating its words to the Christmas message of “Enmmanuel” – “God-With-Us.” Afterward, as this writer passed by Our Lady of Good Voyage Chapel, the Celebrant was just offering the Consecration wine. The Chapel’s doors were open

to Christmas’s unseasonable, recordbreaking warm weather.

The next morning, Gate of Heaven’s doors were open to continued mild weather. This church is arguably South Boston’s most beautiful and striking edifice, both inside and out. The flaming Pentecostal scarlet of the poinsettias – flowering plants originally from Mexico – contrasted vividly with the white marble of the altar. The words of Isaiah and

of Luke echoed throughout: “For unto us a Child is born. . . . Do not be afraid, I bring you Good News … for in Bethlehem … a Savior is born.”

Family themes (including the Holy Family), Emmanuel/“God-withus,” and a celebration of the Good News – an inspiring combination.

We hope your Christmas was merry, and we hope for a Happy New Year for all of you as well.

Local police and youth unite in ‘Hand in Hand’ program

“Hand in Hand” is a recent, ongoing program at Medicine Wheel (110 K St.). Its aim is breaking down the barriers that exist between young people and the Boston Police Department.

Christmas Banquet at St. Monica’s

It’s a tradition that is 32 years old by now: The Msgr. Thomas McDonnell/Frank Kelley Banquet. It started in 1983 in the original St. Augustine Hall and moved to St. Monica Hall 10 years ago. The banquets are held on three days each year: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.

They are open to all. You don’t have to be a parishioner, you don‘t have to be Catholic, you don’t even have to be needy. Just show up and enjoy.

These banquets reflect the celebrations in St. Luke’s Gospel, which Msgr. Thomas McDonnell (“Father Tom”) always called “The Hospitality Gospel.” Would you believe that Frank Kelley got his banquet prep experience as a Mess Sergeant on the U.S. military?

A hard-working cadre of volunteers spent much of their Christmas Eve prepping a multicourse feast of ham, turkey and all the trimmings. On Christmas Day itself, many more volunteers gathered to serve and deliver hundreds of sumptuous

Introducing Thomas White A young lad enjoying life in South Boston

He’s a quiet youngster who is having a wonderful time growing up in South Boston. He’s doing well in school and having a blast in the world of sports.

His name is Thomas “Tommy” White.

Tommy, 13, is the son of Anna and Langdon White. He has a younger sister, Morgan, and a younger brother, Ian. Tommy was in the Advanced Work Class (AWC) at the Condon School. He then went to Up Academy for the sixth grade and currently is in the seventh grade at Boston Latin. His favorite subject is Humanities. And he’s on the Honor Roll. Someday, he’d like to be a sports announcer or journalist.

Tommy’s favorite color is orange. His favorite food is pizza. His favorite professuibak athletes are Stephen Curry of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, and Thomas Muller, a German professional footballer (soccer) who plays for Bayem Munich and the German National Team.

In his leisure time, Tommy goes to the South Boston Boys and Girls Club or the Walsh Center gym. He also likes practicing soccer and hoop moves outside his house with his friends.

Tommy likes to read. He’s currently reading the Shakespearian comedy, “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” for

school but prefers reading science fiction. He’s also an aspiring actor and performs in shows held at the Fourth Presbyterian Church on Dorchester Street. This January he will be appearing in “Urine Town,” a post-apocalyptic play based on the French play, “aLes Miserables.”

In the world of sports, Tommy has played in the Gate of Heaven CYO basketball program for the past few years. This season he’s on the PS Deli Club in the Gatey hoop house league coached by Mike Donovan and on the seventh/eighth grade travel team coached by Sean Monahan and Mike Alessandro.

“I like the challenges,” he said. “It’s good to see the hard work pays off.

I feel good every time I make a free throw or get an assist . . . It’s better

than scoring.”

Tommy loves playing soccer. He plays in the Dorchester Soccer League for Dorchester United and for the America FC United club team in Quincy.

Soccer is for three seasons - spring, winter, and fall - and with games and practices, he keeps busy. Two years ago, he scored nine goals, an impressive statistic for a defensive player.

“I like the team effort,” he said.

“It’s amazing to watch players work

together…and it looks so good when it all comes together on the field and we score a goal.”

For the past three seasons, Tommy’s has been active in the Youth Enrichment Program (YES) held in the summer and spring at Moakley Park and overseen by Bryan Van Dorpe.

Tommy runs the 800 meter and mile event in this track and field initiative.

He also has a Green Belt in Judo and a Brown Belt in Karate. He’s eight moves away from a Black Belt in Karate and plans to return soon to the Ultimate Defense Academy to accomplish this goal.

His parents have a done a great job guiding him in the right direction.

They also credit his development to the community itself.

“We are proud of Thomas,” said his mom, Anna. “He’s worked hard in school and in sports. We also love living in South Boston. It’s a great place to raise kids . . . Everyone watches out for them. We love this community.”

Thoughts of yesteryear: A reflection at the new year

I

’ll be turning the big 66 this January, and as I was sitting in my living room watching TV and enjoying retirement, I thought about years gone by the boards. I remember: •When I was a kid living on Maryland Street and then on Doris Street in Savin Hill. I loved cleaning the sidewalk and the gutters along the street in front of my house and my neighbor’s homes. It was called pride. Helping others.

•The “ragman” coming down Maryland Street in his little wagon driven by a horse. The ragman was dirtier than dirt but I assume he made money because he paid a small fee to customers for their old clothes. And he always came back.

•The door-to-door salesman who’d come by every week to collect two bucks from my mom. Most

of the time my mom would ask him to come back next week or we made believe we weren’t home and wouldn’t answer the door.

•That there weren’t that many vehicles on the streets. Lucky if there was one vehicle per street back in the ‘60s.

•My brother Pat and I had paper routes and delivered the Boston Herald. We delivered papers to homes on Sagamore, Auckland, Doris, Elton, Midland, Maryland and Sydney Street, as well as parts of Dorchester Avenue and Savin Hill Avenue. We usually had about 50 customers and the paper cost eight cents. We always bought a few extra papers so we could sell them on the corner of Dot and Savin Hill Avenue to people driving by the intersection or we would go into the local bars and sell them. We also shined shoes to make a buck.

•Watching Creature Double Feature on Saturdays.

•Going to the Strand Theatre in Upham’s Corner or the Park Street Theatre on Dot Avenue on Saturdays with my cousin, Tommy O’Toole. Loved watching the Three Stooges in between the double movie feature.

•As a freshman up at Southie High, a slick upperclassman tried to sell me tickets for the fourth floor swimming pool.

•The fight on the MBTA bus between the two biggest kids at Southie High. One kid was from Savin Hill, the other from Southie. Nobody won. Nobody lost.

•Working on Kneeland Street in the garment industry for an old Jewish couple for $1.25 an hour.

•Watching the Patriots lose all the time on the small black-and-

white TV that you needed to put Reynolds wrap on the antenna to get clear reception.

•Swimming at Savin Hill Beach.

•Hanging up Savin Hill woods.

•Playing hoop behind the former Motley School, near the woods, or up at the Bird Street gym.

•Playing CYO, high school and college hoop.

•Marching for Saint William’s Championship Band and winning every year.

•Watching my father decorate the Christmas tree.

•Asking my mom to make me a tuna fish sandwich.

•My four brothers, Pat, Jack, Buddy and Jimmy, and how close we were.

•When “everyone wished everyone” a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year without hesitation.

Gate of Heaven Hoop Haven Coach Danielle MacDonald’s squad gets in the win

The Gate of Heaven CYO third and fourth grade boys’ travel basketball team (1-3) won its first game of the season last Saturday, Dec. 26, at the Walsh Center gym, by defeating Saint Agatha’s of Milton, 31-13. The team played well defensively and passed the ball around on the offensive end, which produced positive results.
