Celebrating the Season Boston Common Tree Lighting by Rick Winterson
Christmas Eve and Day is finally at hand. Over the past three weeks, there have been numerous religious and seasonal observances. This is a holy season, after all. It is also a time to celebrate – to celebrate the New Year, Kwanzaa, the Solstice (Monday, December 21), Hanukkah, and of course, the 2015th Christmas itself on Friday, December 25. Already, there have been a great many celebratory events; space limits South Boston Online to describing only some of them. The 25th Laboure House Tours on the first weekend of December was a memorable social event and a very successful fundraiser - a joyful time, which always seems to open the Christmas Season every year in South Boston. Music and singing are everywhere caroling predominates in our musical events, of course. On Wednesday evening, December 16, the Andrew Square Civic Association (ASCA) presented Santa Claus and a tuneful, costumed
quartet of singers at Dorchester Street and Old Colony. The HUB Church serenaded the Powers Apartments and the Fourth Street stationhouse (BFD Engine 2 and Ladder 19). Last Saturday, The Fourth Presbyterian Church’s singers – always a treat to hear – presented “An American Christmas”, based upon folk music of the season from all over the nation. The Fourth did not disappoint the many, many fans of that church’s choral group, led by Pastor Burns Stanfield. The virtuosos at the Fourth are truly joyful and professional talents. And there were balls, and banquets, and parties, all celebrating the Holiday Spirit in South Boston. The Notre Dame Education Center (NDEC) held an Open House at its headquarters and school on Old Colony Avenue. Their buffet table was sumptuous, reflecting their highly successful educational mission. Many civic associations had membership parties. Local kids took part in lots of “times” for them – they delighted in the tree lightings, spoke to continued on page 4
Mayor Walsh greets the crowd to launch the 74th Annual Official Tree Lighting on Boston Common. Mayor Walsh and Santa Claus lead the onstage celebration moments after Boston’s official Christmas tree was lit. The holiday decorations throughout Boston Common and the Public Garden include a 49-foot spruce donated by Andrea and William MacEachern of Lorne in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. This is the 44th year that Nova Scotia has given a Christmas tree to the people of Boston as thanks for relief efforts following the December 6, 1917, explosion of a munitions ship in Halifax Harbor.
