“Hating people because of their color is wrong. and it doesn’t matter which color does the hating. It’s just plain wrong.” (Muhammad Ali)

Relighting Boston This holiday season, South Boston residents and visitors will notice an extra bright glow on Broadway – but it won’t be from Christmas lights. The Boston Public Work’s Street Lighting Division recently finished replacing the antiquated street lights on Broadway with new LED (Lightemitting Diode) lighting. Efficient and environmentally friendly, LED lighting uses less energy and lasts longer than other lighting technologies – leading to cost savings. According to information available on the City of Boston’s website, the City’s Street Lighting Division has been working since 2010 to retrofit Boston’s 64,000 streetlights to LED technology. As of late October, over 38,800 street lights had been retrofitted citywide – saving the city an estimated $4.25 million per year in energy costs. In addition, NSTAR has paid the City $7.1 million in rebates for the retrofits.

But Broadway’s new lights aren’t just pleasing to taxpayer’s wallets. The antique-style acorn lighting fixtures installed on Broadway are pleasing to the eye as well. They harken back to memories of Boston’s signature old-world style while the LED lights themselves emit a soft, white glow closer to natural light than the familiar yellowish light cast off by older style street lights – providing better visibility for both drivers and pedestrians Mayor Walsh accelerated the already successful street light retrofit program this past September and the City’s Street Lighting Division is on track to meet its goal of retrofitting 8,000 street lights in calendar year 2014. Here’s hoping that the State takes notice and does something about their street lights along the beach that create often treacherous conditions for pedestrians crossing Day Boulevard.

Last weekend’s Laboure Center Christmas House Tour #24 capped off the first week of South Boston’s Christmas Season. It was a glorious event, as always – an event that leaves its guests already looking forward to next year’s House Tour.
