Have FAITH This is the 14th installment in South Boston Online’s series about substance abuse, especially opioids like the increasingly deadly blends of heroin and fentanyl. As we approach the Holiday Season and the New Year, we want you to know for sure that help for substance abuse is available to anyone who needs it. This article describes the recent FAITH event: FAITH = Fighting Addiction In The Hub. by Rick Winterson
FAITH (“Fighting Addiction In The Hub”) is an organization devoted to dealing with opioid abuse in the Boston community, as well as understanding that it will take a joint effort to combat this problem. It is spearheaded by the Boston Fire Department, the BFD, because their rescue mission puts them on the front lines when users in Boston overdose themselves. FAITH’s sponsors include
Boston’s Mayor Marty Walsh and Jennifer Tracey, Director of the Office of Recovery Services (in the Boston Public Health Commission). It uses Woburn District Court’s H.E.A.T. program (Heroin Education Awareness Task) as a model FAITH held a highly successful event on Friday, November 13, at the IBEW Hall – perhaps as many as 500 were in attendance, along with a number of agencies that provide prevention services for substance abuse and addiction.. The panel of 15 speakers and presenters was nothing short of outstanding; the displays by the various agencies were highly informative. South Boston Online is writing up this event, because we think it is (very) important that every single one of our readers realizes that help with addiction is available in many, many ways. After a continental breakfast at 8:45, BFD Lt. Pat Hayes convened the FAITH program. He gave a few forbidding statistics: Overdoses have continued on page 2
