Rep. Nick Collins Votes to Increase MA Vets’ Benefits

S

tate Representative Nick Collins joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives today to pass the 2013 VALOR Act which builds on existing legislation to expand opportunities and services for military personnel, veterans and their families. The legislation provides increased property tax relief and enhances employment, educational and healthcare support services. It also establishes a home modification program for veterans to help individuals stay in their homes and function independently.

“This legislation sends a message to our veterans that we appreciate their bravery, sacrifice and service,� Speaker DeLeo said. “Most importantly though, it aids those who have supported us during some of the

country’s most difficult times. I’m incredibly proud that Massachusetts leads the nation in aiding veterans and military personnel and I believe this bill furthers that commitment.�

“Thanks to the efforts of Speaker DeLeo, Chairman Dempsey, and my colleagues on the Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs, we as a Legislature have continued to show our commitment to Massachusetts Veterans,� Representative Nick Collins, Chairman of the Boston Delegation, said.“The VALOR Act II is our way to honor veterans, the bravest men and women of the Commonwealth, and offer them in some small manner, our sign of appreciation.�

This past weekend was the play down for State title. The best team in each of the four pools moved onto the semis. SB Midgets won all three games in their pool, won the semis and then played the Vipers in the finals.

It was a tie score at the end of regulation. The game went into a 10 minute overtime and with 23 seconds left they scored and will be heading to Virginia for the Nationals - U16 Tier II.

Your article was right on however I would like to point out to you that the Southie Shuttle was created to help address some of the issues which you raised.

Since the inception of the Shuttle last April thru October 31st we have transported 2200 South Boston senior citizen on a donation basis.

Donation means that we do not charge a fix rate for a ride rather we accept a donation for transportation to medical visits, shopping and social events.

Our night time restaurant shuttle service provides transportation to residents and visitors of our community.

Currently we have contracted

with 10 that value their patrons and offer a free transportation service. Since the inception of the restaurant service on June 1 up to October 31st, we have transported 3,400 residents of South Boston to South Boston business.

In addition the Southie Shuttle has provided transportation services to the Castle Island Association, Laboure Center South Boston Street Festival., Community Meeting and early morning safe transport. We as a community owned and operated service are always seeking way to improve our community. Currently we are working on the necessary permits to operate dedicated bus routes in along the east west first street corridor and to supplement overcrowding on several T bus routes during the commuter hours.

I welcome you to utilize our service, as well as to visit the Ollie on any Wednesday afternoon and speak to the many seniors who have come to rely on the Southie Shuttle as their designated driver.

Hidden Faces of Courage The Laboure Christmas Shoppe Opens

The cast members and the set of “Hidden Faces of Courage”, a gripping production about abusive treatment of convicted women by our penal, judicial, and reentry systems. “Hidden Faces of Courage” was conceived by Mary Driscoll and written with members of “OWLL” (On With Living and Learning).

The Laboure Center at 275 West Broadway threw open its doors last weekend and installed a Christmas Shoppe in its ground floor refectory/meeting room. The Quencher Packs It In

Hundreds flocked to the I Street block between Sixth and Seventh to bid The Quencher Tavern goodbye on Sunday. Food, entertainment, and lots of liquid refreshments made it a real celebration, a celebration of one of the last authentic South Boston “locals”. All of us will miss The “Q”.

It was a bittersweet event – a huge block party to mark the closing of The Quencher Tavern last Sunday, November 10. The I Street block stretching from Sixth to Seventh Streets was closed off; a large tent was erected in the middle of the street. Stray bits of foam floating in the curbs along I Street betrayed the infinite quantities of beer being poured - and spilled. The Sausage Guy, another Southie icon, was there, along with a bounteous table of sandwiches and finger food.

and Bill Linehan (recently re-elected as District Two City Councilor) played a few hours of music. The 103rd Postal Fire Pipe and Drum Brigade (does South Boston Online have that correctly?) led by Kevin Conroy showed up at three o’clock. Now wasn’t that an accurate cross-section of South Boston’s array of talents.

The Quencher Tavern is more commonly called The Quencher, or even more simply, The “Q”. It is one of the few true neighborhood bars left in South Boston; there are some of these that are still open, but not nearly as many as there used to be.

Perhaps the best way to describe The “Q” is to use the word “local”, in the English/Irish sense of that word. Or the word “pub”, which is short for “public consumption, on-premises”.

Anyhow, hundreds and hundreds of people showed up to swap memories of The Quencher. This writer was unable to establish an exact count, because people kept showing up, wandering around, and leaving. They first visited the jam-

packed interior of The “Q”, and then went into the tent outside on I Street.

New guests came to say goodbye, and kept on coming. And coming.

And coming. And, well, you know what we mean. It’s enough to say that everyone at the party was there.

Bobby Sances, a co-owner of The Quencher, said, “I appreciate this neighborhood. They gave us a lot of business, and were very tolerant of

our presence here. I’m kind of sad at the closing, but things move on.”

Joe “Dodo” Nee, another co-owner, simply said, “This is a great day. I want to thank everyone for coming.”

Bobby had given each of The “Q’s” employees zippered sweat jackets as keepsakes. When asked why, he just said, “Hey, that’s the kinda guy I am.”

Sunday on I Street was indeed a great day.

South Boston Does Not Forget

South Boston values its veterans. Each Veterans Day is solemnly observed in remembrance of those who have served, as well as those returned veterans who have passed on.

As you know, Veterans Day evolved from the celebration of the end of World War I – “The War to end all Wars.�

Originally, November 11 was called Armistice Day, which declared all hostilities in World War I over and done with. The Armistice began precisely at 11:11 a.m., on the 11th day of November - the 11th month of 1918. Now, instead of just the Armistice, we honor all veterans of the many, many years of war that America has endured since then.

It’s worth mentioning that all members of the U.S. Armed Forces are now volunteers. The mandatory draft was ended some 30 years ago.

Why is this worth mentioning? Because younger American veterans volunteered for their military service, willingly undergoing combat’s

privation and dangers. In addition, as far as this writer knows, in all of history no other major nation’s armed forces were ever made up entirely of volunteers.

On a cold, sunny morning last Sunday, November 11, veterans, elected officials, and JROTC detachments from South Boston High School gathered at the Thomas Fitz-

gerald VFW Post. The last Parade Chief Marshall, Ed Flynn, remarked, “It’s an honor to pay my respects to our veterans and their families. We have to treat these veterans with respect and dignity and to address their concerns – jobs, training, counseling, and access to VA medical facilities.�

Rep. Nick Collins mentioned that he was honored to be at the Fitzgerald

Post, stating, “This is a tradition that I hope never dies. As South Boston residents, we must make a commitment to honor all veterans 365 days a year.�

At 9:30, everyone formed up on Fourth Street and marched to the sound of a pipe-and-drum duo in formation to St. Brigid Church.

A Memorial Mass was said by Fr. Joe White, the Pastor of St. Vincent de Paul/Our Lady of Good Voyages. The reading from the Book of Wisdom spoke of “integrity of our hearts� and “all nations being called to duty�; Matthew’s Gospel foreshadowed the coming of Judgment Day, when “the sheep shall be separated from the goats.�

During a touching candlelight ceremony, the names of deceased veterans of the Fitzgerald Post were proclaimed, followed by “Taps� rendered by Tommy Florentino. A delicious, well-prepared breakfast collation followed in the St. Brigid Hall.

And once more, please remember that all of our current Armed Forces are made up of volunteers. This is truly remarkable. This also means that recently returned veterans – from Iraq, Afghanistan, and God only knows where else! – went to those combat areas voluntarily. Frequently, that meant four or five tours of duty, because we let these wars go on for so long. We owe these veterans a huge debt of gratitude.

Simple gratitude requires

immediate access for veterans to medical care, especially psychological treatment as PTSD or “battle fatigue” or “shell shock” develops.

That also means providing whatever aid is needed for what we call “reentry” these days: jobs, job training, counseling, and above all, treatment with dignity and respect. The expense for this is no object.

And if you think South Boston Online is guilty of making an editorial statement here, you are absolutely right. We are “Guilty As Charged” in support of our veterans.

Boston’s Christmas Tree Arrives November15th

The annual gift of an evergreen Christmas tree from the people of Nova Scotia will arrive by police escort at Boston Common at approximately 11 a.m. on the morning of Friday, November 15.

This year marks the 42nd anniversary of this traditional gift giving, a way to thank the people of Boston for providing emergency assistance when Halifax, Nova Scotia’s capital city, was devastated by an explosion in 1917. Boston’s official 2013 Christmas tree is a 47-foot white spruce donated by Mary Lou Milligan of Millcove, Lunenberg County, Nova Scotia. In addition, Nova Scotia is donating smaller trees to Boston charities to be announced.

On November 15, the official 2013 Christmas tree will be escorted by the Boston Police Department beginning around 10 a.m. from Billerica via Route 3 South to Route 128 North to Interstate 93 South to Sullivan Square to Rutherford Avenue over the Charlestown bridge and will weave through downtown Boston on North Wash-

ington, New Chardon, Cambridge, Tremont, Boylston and Charles Streets to enter Boston Common at the corner of Beacon and Charles Streets at approximately 11 a.m. The tree will be installed near the Boston Visitors Center at 139 Tremont Street where it will be met by Boston Parks Commissioner Antonia M. Pollak and local schoolchildren. The Nova Scotia tree will be lit at approximately 7:55 p.m. as the City of Boston’s Official Tree Lighting comes to Boston Common on Thursday, December 5, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The children in Ms. Byrne’s first grade class have been very busy.

They have listened to and read several books from different genres and learned some of the characteristics of each type of book. The Tall Tale about Johnny Appleseed explained how some parts may be exaggerated. In the non-fiction book, “Amazing Apples,” they learned about labeling. In the fiction story,

“I Am An Apple,” they realized that the main character was a talking apple. The children worked on labeling parts of an apple and the life cycle of an apple tree. They really enjoy working on the interactive smart board. After reading an article about apples on the smart board, the children worked on identifying the main idea and some supporting details. Of course, their favorite part

Giving back to the community she loves personifies the Southie spirit.

She lights up like a lighthouse when she mentions South Boston and her recent opportunities to give back to the community she proudly calls home.

Many may think this to be an outdated notion, but thankfully it’s still alive and well in this ever-changing world.

Keryn Connolly is the daughter of Steven and Michelle Connolly. She has a brother Ryan who is a rookie Boston Police Officer, and a sister named Kimberly. She just moved to Dorchester but her heart will always belong to Southie.

In 2012, Keryn decided to turn her life around in more ways than one. She amped up her work outs at Peter Welch’s gym and started running. Over the course of the past eighteen months, she lost over 70 pounds through a combination of a strict diet and a concerted workout regimen.

Keryn teamed up with Dawn Kenneally and Bela Salgado, and formed “Southie Strides.” They ran the Long Island half-marathon and raised forty-five hundred dollars. The generosity of South Boston residents for such a worthy endeavor didn’t disappoint them. The money was given to three special needs kids who were treated to trips and summer camp.

“It was great because we hear sad stories about Southie, but this was a good one,” she said. “It felt good to give back to the community. It was great to see the smiles on these kid’s faces. All we could say was “wow.’

It was just unbelievable and it

made us feel good inside.”

Keryn caught the bug.

Helping others rejuvenated her with a sense of purpose. So, she ran the Boston Marathon and raised five thousand dollars for the South Boston Neighborhood House as a member of Team Ollie. Unfortunately, her finish line celebration crossing was shortlived, as Bostonians witnessed the wrath of inhumanity.

The Connolly family was directly impacted by the Marathon bombings. Her mom Michelle suffered a facial injury, sustained from flying shrapnel, when the bombs exploded. The family was in dire need of a pickup. They were still reeling. In October, an opportunity arose, and Keryn decided to fight her first amateur fight at Welch’s gym. It was a means to alleviate the anxiety and anger building up within her family.

“I was so proud and happy when I won,” she said. “I’ll never forget my mom and dad, and my

brother and sister smiling at the end of this fight. We needed this to uplift our spirits and it did.”

Last September, Keryn participated in the Walk for Autism on “Team Riley” and raised two thousand dollars. Then, she raised another five hundred dollars for breast cancer. In January, she’ll begin training for her second Boston Marathon. She’s committed to raise one thousand dollars for the South Boston Boys and Girls Club. Additionally, she intends to revive Southie Strides next spring and raise money once again for special needs children.

“I love South Boston and feel it’s an honor to give back to a community that gave me so much when I was growing up,” Keryn said proudly. “I’m passionate about this and happy to represent my hometown.”

Meet Gerard Colby

Youngster comprehends the importance of taking care of our veterans.

He’s an intelligent young boy who understands that embracing compassion in our lives is as refreshing as feeling the warmth of the sun in the sky. His mom is Jill Kane and his grandma is Ronna Kane. Our young student-athlete in the Korner this week is Gerard Colby.

Gerard, 12, is in the seventh grade at the Up Academy Charter School. He’s consistently on the Honor Roll. He loves his science and math classes, and someday hopes to be either an engineer or a physicist.

In his leisure time, Gerard likes to read mythology books. He just finished reading, “The House of Hades” written by Rick Riordan, a book which chronicles the trials and tribulations of five demigods as they battle the forces of evil. Gerard also likes to read Marvel and D.C. comic books (what boy doesn’t) and his favorite superhero is Captain America. His favorite color is lava and his favorite food is hamburgers cooked on the grill at home. He likes the home-cooking touch.

Gerard likes to “Chill out” while playing video games, especially “Call to Duty.” He also loves watching television. His favorite movies feature James Bond, debonair super spy 007. His

favorite one is “Skyfall” starring Daniel Craig in his third performance in this role. Additionally, he enjoys playing street hockey in front of his house, a little archery in his back yard, and spending time with his pet cats, Percy and Ivy, as well as his two dogs, Scout and Shamrock.

In the world of sports, Gerard has been active in the South Boston Little League since his t-ball days. He plays third base and is an avid baseball fan.

“I like playing baseball,” he said. “When I get some wood on the ball it goes far. That’s a great feeling. I also get to meet new teammates and make new friends.

“Everyone loves baseball in Boston,” he added. “The Boston Red Sox have won three World Series titles, in 2004, 2007, and now in 2013. I love watching them. They’re the best!”

For the past five seasons, Gerard has been a fixture up at the Walsh gym in the Gate of Heaven CYO basketball program.

“I love the constant back and forth of basketball,” he said. “It’s fast-paced and exciting. It’s a great workout too.”

If Gerard was the President of the United States his first priority would be to make sure our veteran’s received all the help they needed to transition back into civilian life.

“My great grandfather was in in World War II, and my grandfather was in Vietnam,” he

said. “They both returned safely and my family is proud they served. Last week I saw a homeless veteran downtown and gave him a few dollars. I figured he needed it more than me.

“So, if I was the president,” he concluded.

“I’d make sure veterans were given money, had homes to live in… and their families were safe.”

Jill’s a proud mom and she should be.

“Gerard’s a respectful, well-mannered boy,” she said. “He has a good heart, a generous one. He’s creative, clever and very witty. He’s works hard in school, is an Honor Roll student and knows how important school is for his future. I’m proud of him.”

High Touch High Tech Science Visits St. Peter Academy Students in PreK-B through Grade 5 were treated to in-house hands on science presented by Radiant Rita and Kinetic Katie, the scientists from HTHT.

Radiant Rita presented “Reason for the Season to PreK-B and PreK-A. The children talked about the different seasons. They talked about the leaves changing color and made leaf rubbings.

They also talked about snow and made their own snowflakes with

q-tips. The K1 students enjoyed being paleontologists during “Jurassic Jr.”. They had fun examining different fossils and then making their own fossil to take home.

They also “dug” for shark’s teeth by scraping hard sand. The students in K2, 1 & 2 had a blast learning about chemistry and chemical reactions in “Chemfun”. Kinetic Katie was awesome and made it really hands on and fun. First, the students put droplets of water on

wax paper and “raced” the water droplets. Then they added vinegar to baking soda and watched it bubble up. They observed a chemical reaction to find out what colors made up a black magic marker and last, but certainly not least, they made glow in the dark silly putty! Radiant Rita presented “Matter Matters” to Grades 3,4, & 5. The students experimented with liquids and gases by exploring their properties. They ma-

nipulated water and other liquids to explore their characteristics and observed evaporation rates of three different liquids. The experimented with density& buoyancy by spooning salt into the water to make a hard boiled egg float!

The best experiment was combining vinegar and baking soda that created a chemical reaction that produced enough gas to inflate a balloon.

First Annual SBAA Gingerbread House Contest

HELP WANTED: A Nanny is needed to take care of a 5 year old boy. Main duties are dropping and getting him from school and assisting in few household chores.

The South Boston Arts Association is holding its First Annual Gingerbread House Contest and holiday celebration at the South Boston Public Library, 646 East Broadway, on Thursday, December 5th, 6 – 7:45 p.m.

There will be prizes awarded for building the best Gingerbread House in two categories: Individual for age 10 and up (prizes, $100, 50, and 25); and Business/Nonprofit, trophy and bragging rights!

Guest judges will be Ray Flynn, Sweet Tooth Owner Glenn Quirion, and the fabulous Wondertwins!

Each contest entry must be accompanied by an unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots.

In preparation for the big contest, organizer local artist Debby Putnam will have a one-day children’s gingerbread building event at the library on November 26 from 3-4:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help with the setup, cleanup and child help.

Music and food will add to the festivities. Kibbitzers are welcome to join the holiday party, but don’t forget to bring an unwrapped toy.
