Veterans Day, 2014
Veterans Day grew out of World War I, first as Armistice Day on anniversaries of November 11, 1918, when that war ended. November 11 became Veterans Day in America in 1954, took a brief sidestep to the nearest Monday in the 1970s, and then returned to November 11 (no matter what day of the week). by Rick Winterson
World War I was declared in August, 1914, so this year’s 2014 Veterans Day was observed in the centennial shadow of that bloody conflict. After 17 million deaths and the complete destruction of much of Europe, it was called “The war to end all wars.” Yeah, right. Perhaps it was traces of this memory that made the 2014 Veterans Day in South Boston so meaningful. The weather helped, with a perfect Indian Summer day. Need we say more? As usual, their Veterans Day opened with coffee and sinfully sweet baked goods at the Post itself, which were (also as usual) generously provided by South Boston’s Doughboy Donuts (220 Dorchester Avenue, just after the intersection with A Street). A special shout-out to some of the many, many, supporters of the Fitzy Post during their Veterans Day observances: The High School’s JROTC detachment, which includes a very sharp Color Guard, sported eye-catching new uniforms as they provided the marching contingent. Young women and men, you were a class act last Tuesday. Music was provided by Piper Kevin Conroy and Drummer Mike Casper. The skirl of Kevin’s pipes and the beat of Mike’s drum were the perfect accompaniment for the march to St. Brigid Church, which formed up at 9:30 and stepped off along Fourth Street from the Fitzgerald Post. continued on page 4
