Veterans Day, 2015, at the Fitzy Post

Despite a chilly rain (it’s November, after all), the veterans from, and members of, the Thomas F. Fitzgerald Post, VFW No. 561, gathered for Veterans Day observances. They met at the Post on Fourth Street, marched to St. Brigid Church, said a Memorial Mass, and enjoyed a brunch in the Church Hall. It was the 64th such obser vance.

This has been a busy time for militar y veterans. Recently, Boston and South Boston hosted the Medal of Honor Association – the third time we were chosen to host this event. Tuesday, November 10 was the 240th Anniversar y of the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1775, the Marine Corps was

established by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia, under Commandant Samuel Nicholas. Semper Fi! Wednesday, November 11, was the 96th Armistice/Veterans Day, of course. Thursday, November 12, the USS Constitution Society has a press preview of its ships model exhibition, all of the USS Constitution. One of her models is 100 years old.

The exhibition opens to the general public on Saturday, November 12. It was/is indeed a full week.

On South Boston’s Veterans Day, obser vances began with a coffee-and-doughnuts muster at the Fitzgerald Post.

Boston Community ESOL Center Their mission is “To address the communication gaps in diverse Boston communities by offering English courses and workshops.”

Since 2013, The Boston Community English Center has been holding intensive ESOL (English for Speaker of Other Languages) classes at the Joseph Tierney Learning Center in South Boston. The Boston Community English Center aims to empower students living in South Boston and beyond to become invested in both their English skills as well as their community. Between 2013 and 2014, their ESOL program has helped 113 students develop English skills to get

jobs, continue their education, and communicate better with children’s schools.

This Boston Community ESOL Center is a nonprofit endeavor of the AES World Languages and Cultures Institute. The program prepares students for employment, improves their communication skills on a daily and provides students with the necessary tools to become self-sufficient. The ten-week course is currently free and offers three levels of proficiency. Beginner and Intermediate classes are offered, along with an English-to-Computers course, and an English teaching certification (TEFL) course.

“We start at “Hello, my name is..” and progress to conversations concerning real-world topics such as healthcare,” wrote Charlotte

Aldrich, ESOL Program and Curriculum Development Manager for AES. “In six cycles we have seen dozens of students forge meaningful bonds inside the classroom, and apply their knowledge and confidence to their lives outside as well.

They have started businesses, navigated medical issues and created relationships within the diverse population that surrounds the Tierney Learning Center.

“Our two-hour evening classes focus on creating a trusting environment, where students feel comfortable using their language skills,” Aldrich further wrote. “Our teaching team carries out all assessments prior to class, so students can be confident they are placed in the best level for them. Teachers encourage communication through games, activities

and oral exercises. In each class, students practice what they learn immediately with their classmates and teacher. By enabling them to master the language in a welcoming environment, our students are more likely to successfully and confidently communicate in shops, at their children’s school, and with their neighbors. Many of our students have lived geographically close to each other for years, but have been unable to communicate. Our classes create a space to connect such people, and give them the resources to bond with others in their own community.”

South Boston Action Council Hires 6 “Healthy Community Champions”!

As part of a federal PICH (Partners Improving Community Health) grant, the BPHC (Boston Public Health Commission) and BACH (Boston Alliance for Community Health) have teamed up to hire 75 citywide Healthy Community Champions (HCC), of which six will be working right here in South Boston.

The SBAC is proud to welcome Southie residents Joe Kebartas, Esther Medina, MarenTober, Matt Preston, Julian Pereira, Caitlin Lynch and Brittney Burgess (as the HCC site coordinator) to their new roles.

The official graduation of our newly minted Healthy Community Champions was on Saturday, September 19th, at the Roxbury YMCA. Family, friends and the public were invited and public officials, such as congressman Michael Capuano and City-Councillor Tito Jackson attended the event to support the health initiatives and mission of #LetsGetHealthyBoston!

The South Boston HCC’s will be working on improving community health through a variety of initiatives, such as smoke free housing, active transporta-

tion and healthy food and beverages, with special focus on low-income and minority populations, as these are unproportionally affected by chronic diseases such as obesity, type-2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, depression etc.

Of course, there is no way around Social Media these days, and our hashtag is: #LetsGetHealthyBoston.

The South Boston Action Center, a community-based agency, has served South Boston since 1967. The Action Center is affiliated with Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) and develops opportunities, programs, and resources for families of low income. Direct service, advocacy, education, capacity building, and collaboration all play a direct role in working to ensure the needs of residents are meet in the most effective manner.

It is a beautiful and inspirational message to families struggling with addiction issues with a loved one. Thank you Erin for sharing your story.

It was an honor to be able to share my story with over 600 people tonight at the Gavin Foundation Anniversary Dinner. Thank you for all the love in the room and God bless those in recovery. A few people asked if I would share my speech so here it is. I hope I was able to give comfort to at least one person in the room.

Hello, my name is Erin Murphy and I have been a mother for 26 years.

It wasn’t until February of 2014, as I sat in the emergency room waiting to see if my son was going to live, did I finally realize that I was doing this whole mothering thing wrong. Most mothers nag, yell and just talk at their children and hope they will learn the important life lessons from it. That wasn’t working that well for us and it was at that point I realized that I had to start actually MOTHERING and stop just being a mother. I had to lead by example, I had to listen, I had to be around, be supportive and show that I loved but most importantly I had to FORGIVE. I had to

forgive myself, I had to forgive my family and I had to really forgive my son. Not just say that I did, but then bring up something he did in the past that hurt us and hold that over his head in hopes that it would motivate him to seek recovery. I needed to start mothering and help him realize his amazing worth and that his kind, charming personality was such a positive force in our family and that we wanted him back. Back to feeling that he was needed, not a burden or a secret to be kept. He was my son and I loved him with all my heart and I wanted him to love himself again.

But how? How do addicts get better?

How do they find treatment? How do they know where to go or who to call?

that day was that I couldn’t help my son if I continued to pretend there wasn’t a problem or if I continued to hide his pain. I had to name it and I had to be ok with saying it out loud.

My son is an addict and he needs help. It was hard at first, but like anything in life it got easier the more I did it. The more people I shared my story with the more I learned that so many families struggle with addiction in silence. They become isolated when what they need most is to be surrounded by people who care. We need to keep talking about it and we need to be more supportive and less judgmental.

Brian eventually got a bed at the Gavin House and graduated six months later. He had grown so much and had been taught many important life coping skills while he was there that I was optimistic. Unfortunately, he relapsed but the good thing was that he got himself right back into treatment. I called John McGahan and he helped Brian find his way to the Answer House.

That is how I ended up running the Boston Marathon this year and

raising money for the Gavin Foundation. I had never run a marathon before and I was scared but I knew I had to be strong. Training for a marathon in the bitter cold and snow was a good way to test my strength.

When a run seemed like it may never end and the pain made me want to stop, I would remind myself that I had it so much easier than those struggling with addiction.

Once I started to tell people that I was running they would always ask, “That’s great but what’s your cause?” I knew what my cause was but how would I get others to care about it with me? There are so many great charities that people will rally around you for and donate money to, but how was I going to get people to give me money for addiction? Maybe if I was just honest, and told people my story and explained how there are not enough beds for those ready for recovery and that the Gavin House does such amazing work then people would care and start donating. I talked about it all the time to anyone who was willing to listen. About how hard each day is for those trying to stay sober and that without the support and resources the Gavin Foundation offers that so many people wouldn’t have a chance at recovery. Well, people did care and were so generous. It was a bit overwhelming.

I had my marathon shirt printed with the words HEROIN SUCKS across the front and ran from Hopkinton to Boston with cheers from the crowd and even a few hugs from strangers. I am running the 2016 Boston Marathon to raise awareness and money for the Gavin Foundation. This time my shirt will say “HEROIN STILL

Rep. Collins Votes to Protect Veterans Programs Representative Nick Collins joined his colleagues in the House of Representatives to pass multiple bills to protect the identities and legacies of activeduty military personnel and veterans. These bills build upon existing legislation to expand opportunities and services for military personnel, veterans and their families.

The Stolen Valor Act criminalizes falsely representing oneself as military personnel, a veteran or a recipient of specific military honors in order to receive money, property or a tangible benefit. This crime would be punishable by a fine of $1,000 and imprisonment of not more than one year.

“This legislation is one more way to ensure our service men and women get the respect and honor they deserve,” said Rep. Collins. “Our dedicated veterans make immense sacrifices and

we all need to work together to ensure they are the sole beneficiaries of these important programs, and that no one is able to disgrace their names through fraud.”

“I am immensely proud and humbled that Massachusetts ranks first in the nation when it comes to military-benefit programs and services,” said Speaker Robert DeLeo. “This legislation sends a message to our heroes and their families that we appreciate their bravery, sacrifice and service.”

Under legislation passed, Purple Heart recipients would have free access to state parks, forests and reservations.

The House also passed bills related to stealing, damaging or desecrating veterans’ graves and inappropriately removing a commemorative American flag representing service the military, police or fire departments.

Elderly Apartments Celebrate 20

It was a festive day last Wednesday at 120 H Street. That’s the address of the South Boston Elderly Apartments. Time certainly passes quickly these days – that establishment has been there for 20 years, as of this year of 2015. It has been a community within our overall South Boston community of 30,000+ happy souls.

Community Manager Judy Reilly and the Elderly Apartments’ staff decided to celebrate the occasion.

Judy put together what she called a “Flag Ceremony Program”. She invited elected officials, arranged patriotic observances by the residents themselves, and provided a sumptuous luncheon for all concerned.

After the luncheon was concluded and while the residents relaxed over the sweets at the end of their meal, Judy opened the program (she’s a good emcee). Fr. Gerald Souza delivered the Invocation, asking for blessings on those present , including continued good health and joyful

spirits. Fr. Souza is one of the priests newly assigned ot St. Vincent de Paul Church. He and his colleagues are now facing the immense problem of the crumbling plaster on the Church’s ceiling, but he had time to spare for the Flag Ceremony.

Michael is on the Board of the Elderly Apartments. He spoke of being on hand, when the apartments were first opened 20 years ago in 1995. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Renea Duran; Mary Maddox led the singing of “The Star Spangled Banner”, our National Anthem. All joined in with both exercises It was real pleasure to see such a joyful and patriotic celebration in what has become a South Boston institution – the South Boston Elderly Apartments.

The willing patriotism of the residents was uplifting to see.

Comedy Night, 2015 – A Great Success

The 2015 Comedy Night, a key fundraiser for the South Boston Collaborative Center, was an absolutely marvelous, highly successful, sold-out Southie “Time”. It took place at Florian Hall, that iconic South Boston gathering place, last Friday evening, November 6. There was an audible, joyful buzz all around the Hall, which was filled to rafters with people celebrating South Boston’s recovery efforts. To be specific, 40+ tables were jam-packed to overflowing with more than 400 people (along with much good fellowship).

Last Friday evening’s Comedy Night was graphic proof of something South Boston Online has frequently written about our traditional Southie “Times”: Southie “Times” let you do well by doing good, and having a great “Time” doing it.

The South Boston Collaborative Center is 18 years old. It was founded by a group of South Boston’s citizens, who were (greatly) concerned over the

epidemic of drug-relate teen suicides that occurred back in 1996 and 1997.

Darlene Sheehan was the Collaborative’s first Director; the annually conferred “Beacon of Hope” Awards are named for her. Nowadays, the Collaborative’s doors are open to help anyone who is afflicted with the disease of substance addiction – addiction to alcohol, pills, drugs, whatever.

There were two special high points during the evening: The first was the program which began with remarks

by Andy Ward, the Collaborative’s current Director. He thanked everyone for their support and reminisced about Darlene – “she was a bundle of energy”. Caseworker Keith Lombard narrated a few poignant cases where the Collaborative succeeded in pulling clients back from addiction.

Darlene Sheehan “Beacon of Hope” Awards were then conferred upon Jack Baker and John Meaney. We featured both men in our October 22 issue (page six). Suffice to say that John completed 30 years in recovery this September, and Jack passed his

50th year in recovery last Thanksgiving. They have devoted themselves to the recovery of others all during their combined eight decades of sobriety.

As usual, the much-anticipated comedy team wowed the crowd.

That was the evening’s second high point. Comic Will Noonan opened, emceed, and conducted the auction

at the end. Sean Sullivan delighted everyone with his shtick about keeping chickens for eggs. Jimmy Dunn wowed the crowd with numerous one-liners describing his home life, as well as his interaction with the audience.

The Collaborative’s 2015 Comedy Night was indeed a great evening.

On Thursday evening, November 5, the Tynan School kindergarten team hosted the New England Aquarium Touch Tank Event. Tynan teach-

ers Deborah Arlauskas, Vina Beach, and Kimberely Gordan invited their kindergarten students, families and friends to the school to meet some of the New England Aquarium tide pool creatures.

“Children and their brave parents were able to hold and learn more about horseshoe crabs, hermit crabs,

oysters, periwinkles, moon snails, whelks, and the popular New England Blue crab,” said Deborah Arlauskas “There was even a giant spider crab available for handling.

“Preparing for the NEA visit,” Arlauskas further stated. “… Kindergarten students created a Tide pool mural labeling flora and fauna, cre-

ated characters from favorite ocean books, and continue to write informational stories about life in the sea. The Tynan Tigers will visit the New England Aquarium later this month.”

Time to Play Basketball Novice players need to learn the fundamentals.

Hoop, round ball, basketball, however it’s labeled, it’s almost time for our youngsters to take out the “Rock” and learn how to play this vigorous sport. For many it will be a time of discovery, learning, hard work and hopefully, fun. Fun, as in “Fundamentals” as they’re introduced to the basics of hoop.

Basketball house leagues at the Walsh, Tynan and Condon gyms, as well as the Boys and Girls Club, is where children learn the fundamentals of hoop. It will be a totally new experience for them, and those involved in teaching them, must embrace the same philosophy if they truly want the children to enjoy playing while learning basic rules.

The main purpose of these intro-

ductory programs is to give inexperienced youngsters a basic understanding and feel for the game. Players will only improve if they’re told what they’re doing wrong, how to avoid the same mistakes in the future, what’s expected of them, and what behavior, on and off the bench, is unacceptable.

also act as a teacher. This dual role would include: • Thoroughly explaining the three-second rule violation at the offensive end. Telling the players they must not stay in the “paint” longer than three seconds or the team loses possession of the ball, called a turnover. The player must move quickly in and out of the paint while on offense, and have “both feet” entirely out of the paint when posting up on either side of the lane.

• Showing players how to line up during a free throw. Instructing the players they can enter the paint when the free throw-shooter releases the ball, but that the shooter must stay behind the line until the ball hits the rim.

• Explaining to players that they must not enter the court during a substitution until they are “beckoned’ onto the court by the referee.

• Explaining the intentional foul rule. This is important because players can sustain serious injuries when they are pushed from behind or hit hard while driving to the hoop. Emphasize that hard fouls are in fact unsportsmanlike and will not be tolerated.

• Explaining the traveling and carrying (palming the ball) violations. Allowing these little tykes to take three, four, five, six steps, without dribbling the ball, or turning the ball over by resting the ball on top of the hand, not calling either violation, and subsequently not explaining the rule, will never help players understand what they did wrong or improve their game.

Momentarily stop the game/scrimmage, and explain the rule.

• Informing all players that “trashtalking” among players is strictly forbidden and takes away from the true spirit of the game, which is to just play hoop and enjoy. Tell the players to do their talking “On the court”- that is, by showing their opponent how the game is successfully played without the nonsense.

A zero-tolerance stance should be enforced at all times.

House league coaches should: • Concentrate on teaching players how to play basic zone as well as man-to-man defense. The concept of teamwork must be consistently instilled and drilled into the ever-receptive minds of these youngsters, with a strong emphasis on knowing when to pass the ball, when to shoot, how to set legal picks, and how to properly “Box-Out” an opponent under the boards. Players should work hard on defense, and if necessary, rest on the offensive end.

• Instruct their players to keep quiet on the court, concentrate on the game, and do not complain about the officiating. The bottom line is that players must play, coaches will coach, and officials will referee the game. If the coach has a question about a rule interpretation, he can talk to the official when the ball is dead and time is out. However, judgment calls, likes balls and strikes in baseball, are really not open for discussion.

• Explain that negative, unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated and will be nipped in the bud.

Let the players “Ride the Pine”that is, sit on the bench until they learn what is expected of them.

• Serve as role models and mentors to the players and maintain self-control while coaching the team.

Learning the fundamentals of hoop should be an enjoyable experience for our young athletes. All those involved in this endeavor, from players to coaches to officials, should be enriched by these experiences. And, it must not be forgotten, that these young athletes need to be taught to win with grace, and lose with dignity; worrying less about the final score while thinking more about how the game should be played.

Mayor Walsh Scholarship Recipients at Suffolk University Announced Erin Santhouse and Ryan Woods have been named the most recent Mayor Martin J. Walsh Scholarship recipients at Suffolk University.

The Martin J. Walsh Scholarship is awarded annually to academically qualified city employees who have demonstrated the potential for advancement and leadership in city government. The scholarship will cover tuition for Suffolk’s Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) program.

Santhouse is the newly-appointed manager of Mayor Walsh’s ONEin3 Initiative, whose mission is to connect Boston’s young adults with city resources and neighborhood networks.

She is currently attending Suffolk in the evening through the University’s MPA program.

Woods is director of external affairs at the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. He is presently taking courses at Suffolk in the evening through the University’s MPA program.

“Erin and Ryan both have exhibited a true commitment to public service,” said Mayor Walsh. “Their focus and dedication to our City has positively impacted people across Boston, and it is with great pleasure that I join Suffolk in awarding them this scholarship. I look forward to seeing their work in the months and years to come, and thank our partners at Suffolk for making quality education accessible for City employees.”

Gate of Heaven Basketball Clinics Hoopsters instructed in the fundamentals of the game

On Saturday, November 7, the Gate of Heaven CYO basketball program held a skill’s clinic at the Walsh Center gymnasium. Over forty youngsters participated in the clinic and had a great time.

The players participated in dribbling drills, shooting drills, were shown defensive stances, the art of free throw shooting, and how to play as a unit in a three-two defensive zone scheme. Afterwards the youngsters were treated to pizza and cold drinks.

and midget league commissioner, Sean Monahan, was in charge of this event, and was ably assisted by his son Sean, Sean McGahan, Greg Lally, Eddie Flynn, Michael Walsh, James Schallmo, and Sean Schallmo.

This skill’s clinic will be offered once again this upcoming Saturday, November 14, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Walsh Center gym. Coach Clark, a local volunteer and coach will be on hand to show the youngsters some fundamental hoop techniques.

The clinic is free and open to girls and boys from the fourth to eighth grades. Aspiring hoopsters should attend this clinic to gain some fundamental knowledge of this sport.

Although we were there under the premise of constructing a garage roof deck “see notice” that was not approved, the meeting turned into a meeting about an illegal set of stairs to be reconstructed that there wasn’t any issue.

We would like to thank those pro and those con, the mayor’s office of neighborhood services, representative John Allison, as well as Councilor Linehan’s office for sending a representative.

It was a wakeup call for all of us to dot our I’s and cross our t’s.

South Boston Open Studios: Fall, 2015

Twice each year, our local Open Studios conclusively demonstrate that among its other strong points, South Boston is also a center for the studio arts – painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media. Some

46 artists exhibited at The Distillery, the 555 Gallery, and the King Terminal on the Fall Open Studios weekend, November 5 and 6.

The various works were not just excellent in their execution, including their colors, subjects, and materials selected.
