I knew from the minute I signed his nomination paper, that Martin “Marty� Walsh would be the next mayor of Boston. To me, the outcome was never in doubt. I’m also overjoyed that Boston District City Councilor, William “Billy’ Linehan, retained his seat, and that Michael Flaherty is back on the city council where he belongs.

All three will bring hands-on experience and political wisdom to the Hall to move this city forward.

Mayor-elect Walsh’s sincerity, his downto-earth persona convinced voters throughout Boston that he was the best candidate to succeed Mayor Thomas Menino.

They were right. Boston District City Councilor Linehan retained his seat by defeating his opponent by roughly six percentage points.

Elections, 2013: Walsh, Flaherty, Linehan Win

For an off-off-year, Boston’s 2013 elections were surprisingly active and interesting example of democracy in action. In a turnout that was considerably higher than expected, the voice of the public was heard - loud and clear. Campaigns of note included those for Mayor of Boston, for at-large City Councilors, and for the District Two City Councilor.

The casino proposal for Suffolk Downs was defeated.

As of late Tuesday evening, Martin J. Walsh became Boston’s new Mayor-elect. Even though South Boston Online endorsed City Councilor John Connolly before the Primary Election, we congratulate Marty Walsh, and we will support his efforts in any way we can to make Boston an even better city than it is now.

Walsh ran an aggressive campaign; it was a notable example of an effective, on-theground, political organization.

Early Tuesday evening at 8:30, the first results showed Connolly in the lead ay 53%, but only a small fraction of the precincts had reported. Connolly supporters at his rally in the Westin Copley were both tense and intense.

Just before 9 p.m., the tide suddenly turned. With about 20% of the precincts reporting, Walsh and Connolly were suddenly even in the count. A few minutes later, at 9 p.m. on the dot, Walsh pulled out front – 52% for him, 48% for Connolly. The count varied slightly for the next half hour, with Walsh maintaining a lead between 2% and 4%.

Around 9:30, a rumor spread that Connolly had conceded.

That turned out to be true.

John entered the rally hall soon afterwards and conceded. He warmly thanked all his supporters, especially his wife, Meg, and

his family – “Campaigning was tough on my family, but Meg, the love of my life, held us together.”

He then praised Marty Walsh, saying, “Marty’s a good man, and he’ll do good things for Boston.”

John went on to mention Mayor Menino’s successful terms as Boston’s Mayor; he closed by expressing his devotion to the people of Boston.

South Boston Online was delighted to see that Michael Flaherty was elected as one of the four City Councilors at-Large. At 17% of the vote, Michael came in a strong third after Ayanna Pressley and Michelle Wu, who essentially tied for first, with each of them receiving around 18%. City Council President Steve Murphy, at 14%, was re-elected to his atLarge seat.

Newcomer Michelle Wu has become a political phenom – from virtual unknown to one of the top vote-getters. This writer surveyed some 20 people about this. Every one of them said that Wu discussed the key issues and her own positions “very clearly”.

Other officials, both new and re-elected, might well follow her example.

Here in District 2 (most of South Boston, the South End, Chinatown), Bill Linehan won out handily over Suzanne Lee – 53% to 47%, or roughly 1,000 votes. He ran a very active campaign from his headquarters just up Broadway from us. We congratulate Bill on his re-election.

Thankfully, the residents of East Boston soundly rejected the casino proposal. The original proposal from Caesar’s was badly flawed, in our opinion, and would

have provided little (if any) benefit to the City. Allowing a casino in either Revere or Everett is their call, but it will still cause us many problems, even though it’s outside our borders. “Casinos ain’t what they’re cracked up to be.”

There were a few cases of negative campaigning, which we won’t dignify by discussing.

Mayor-elect Marty Walsh was frequently challenged concerning his union affiliations, but that made little difference in the vote. And he’ll face his first big

union-related test in handling the arbitrators’ excessive award to the Boston Police Department.

Boston’s key issues are still the same: Mediocre schools, drug-related problems, and uncontrolled development. We wish Mayor-elect Marty Walsh and all of Boston’s elected officials the best as they govern our City and grapple with these issues. And we’d like to suggest to Marty that John Connolly be appointed to replace Dr. Carol Johnson as Boston School Superintendent.

Menino Appoints Evans as Interim Police Commissioner

Mayor Thomas M. Menino appointed Superintendent William B. Evans to Interim Police Commissioner of the Boston Police Department on Friday Novemeber 1st.

Commissioner Evans will serve as the City’s Interim Commissioner until the appointment of a permanent Police Commissioner by the newly elected Mayor of Boston in 2014.

“The Boston Police Department will be in great hands under the leadership of Bill Evans,” Mayor Menino said. “He knows how to manage his team of talented officers, has the respect of the rank and file and has proven his ability to diffuse even the most difficult of public safety situations.”

Commissioner Evans is a 31year veteran of the BPD and has held a leadership role within the Department for the past several years. Superintendent Evans has had notable roles in both the peaceful handling of the 70 day occupation of Dewey Square by Occupy Boston and the capture of suspected Boston Marathon bombing terrorist Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

“I am honored and humbled that Mayor Menino has entrusted me to lead the Boston Police Department,”

Evans said. “I have spent my entire career with the [BPD] and have a deep respect for all its members. I strongly believe in partnerships and am committed to community policing. The Department has made great strides in reducing crime and forging relationships with the community.”

UMass Boston’s graduate programs are growing in recognition and funding: Recently, we received a five-year, $3.1 million Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) grant from the National Science Foundation. This funding will allow eight doctoral candidates studying in a range of disciplines to collaborate on a transnational approach to solving global environmental issues. And early next year, UMass Boston will begin welcoming its inaugural class of students into the School for Global Inclusion and Social Development, the first graduate school in the world to focus on wellness and economic development from an international perspective. Graduates of this school will be qualified to lead nonprofits and work to create public policy for traditionally excluded populations, such as people with disabilities.

UMass Boston has a lot to offer prospective graduate students: 19 doctoral programs, with nine more forthcoming; 44 master’s degree programs; and more than 40 graduate certificate programs. Our graduate students attend small seminars and lectures, conduct research with real-world applications, and work closely with some of the most recognizable names in their fields as advisors and instructors.

On Friday, November 1, legendary Celtics center Bill Russell was in town for the unveiling of his statue on City Hall Plaza. Russell played for the Celtics from 1956 through 1969 and was also a player-coach for three seasons. His team won eleven (11) NBA titles in that era, a feat that will never be duplicated by any team in any sport. He was a tremendous rebounder and shot-blocker, and has the heart of a champion.

Where to Park?

That’s a question on the minds of South Bostonians every single day.

With the election finally behind us, I’d invite our elected officials to help us out and tell us what their plans are to alleviate the parking woes in South Boston.

Of course, that’s based on the premise that there is indeed a solution to at least ease the pain. It’s an open invitation and I hope we receive some responses in the upcoming weeks.

Talking to residents in Southie, the general feeling is that the parking problem has been on the back burner far too long, and our elected officials aren’t doing much to address it. It seems our elected officials think we should just continue on as usual and deal with it.

We get ticketed by the Boston Police, the state police, and the by the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) and residents are fed up. It’s overkill. Residents sense, and rightly so, that those ticketing us, think it’s a big joke, a game, a way to

raise departmental revenues. But those being ticketed aren’t laughing.

Residents think it’s impacting the quality of life, and again, they’re right. People can’t go out at night (and forget about weekends entirely) to go shopping or visit a friend because they know when they return home, the hunt’s on to find a parking space.

If one does go out, God forbid you use your car, because you better be prepared for a hearty walk or to drive around for a long time, hoping to snatch those last remaining precious legit parking spots.

So, many choose not to go out at all.

It affects every resident but more so the elderly who can’t afford to take cabs back and forth from their destinations, or hitch a ride from a friend. It’s tougher for an old timer to walk a lengthy distance, especially at night. And, with the winter fast approaching, we all know what that entails.

It’s a “Southie” nightmare.

So, is there a solution? Some feel bus stops could be opened up for use during off hours. Many think the bus stop in back of the Perry School is a bit too lengthy. Others feel there’s just too many bus stops in Southie and some should be removed. Many

feel our elected leaders reneged on their promise to reach out to the Department of Conservation (DCR) and demand they cut down on parking bans on the boulevard when outside events are being held during the weekends.

District Councilor Billy Linehan, in conjunction with Public Works and the BTD, has initiated public safety parking measures on East Fourth, across from Emerson Cleaners, and near the local post office. But more needs to be done. We need our elected officials to think outside the box.

Southie’s a great place to live, but invariably the second part of that phrase uttered by residents to friends is, “Yeah…but the parking stinks (too put it mildly).” This response is used so often it’s become a cliché.

People want answers. They want results. Holding a public meeting to update us on any plans our elected officials may have, would be a good start in which to our renew faith in those who are supposed to find solutions to such perplexing problems.

Dan McCole’s Mural Is Complete

Dan McCole and his loyal band of painting companions, all members of the South Boston Arts Asociation, have adorned the beach at the Curley Community Center (M Street side) with a striking mural. It is complete, except that it needs a urethane protective coating before the harsh North Atlantic weather descends upon us.

The seascape in the mural is based upon a painting by Ireland’s John Skelton. The other artists included Bill Frew, Deb Putnam, Paul Conley, and Suzanne Lee.

Now that South Boston has demonstrated its mural painting talents here in the old hometown, it’s time to go citywide. The south face of that infamous ventilator shaft in Dewey Square by South Station could really use a Southie-style facelift, which can be easily accomplished by giving the commission to – you guessed it - South Boston’s homegrown artists and the South Boston Arts Association.

Many of these creative talents are (not so incidentally) award-winning local artists themselves.

Meet Club Kid Rianna

Young girl likes to swim and go to the Education Center and Games Room at her second home.

She has a beautiful smile, is a shy girl, but not bashful about saying that she enjoys going to the South Boston Boys and Girls Club after school every day.

Her parents, Rin and Savana, hail from Cambodia. She also has a younger sister named Alexia. Her name is Rianna So.

Rianna, 10, is in the fifth grade at the Condon Elementary School located in Southie.

She enjoys her reading and math classes; and someday would like to be either an artist or an Olym-

pian diver. Her favorite colors are pink, green, and purple, and her favorite food is spaghetti and meatballs.

At the Club, Rianna enjoys spending time in the pool with her friends. She likes to go to the Education Center and Games Room. She feels that that there is a lot of activity going on at the Club which keeps her busy and happy. At home, she watching television, does her homework, draws pictures of flowers, and does household chores such as cleaning her room and washing the dishes. If she does a good job with cleaning up, she’s treated to a night at Boston Bowling with her family.

Rianna also loves reading and is currently enjoying “Bridge to Terabithia.” This novel, written

by Katherine Paterson, is about two ten year-old neighbors who created a fantasy world named Terabithia and spend their time in an abandoned tree house.

He Knew They’d Be Champions

Longtime Red Sox fan thrilled they finally won again at Fenway Park.

South Boston’s number one Boston Red Sox fan, John “Moose� Healey, knew the Red Sox would be World Series Champions.

After the debacle that was the 2012 season, Moose said people laughed when he said they were going to win it all. He never doubted the Red Sox and knew he’d be there to watch them bring home the coveted World Series trophy. He was right and we’re glad he was.

Last July, Moose was honored for his fifty years of service to the youth of this community. Mayor Thomas Menino cited July 7 as John Healey Day in Boston. Moose felt this would be good luck for the Sox.

“I knew when I received this recognition that the Red Sox were gonna win it all,� said Moose. “I was thrilled they won it at home. Now, I can say I was at Fenway Park in 2013 and also at the Garden in 1970 when the Bruins won it.�

Moose has been a Sox fan and attending games for the past forty-six years. He attended all three World Series games at home.

On Halloween, the 4th graders at South Boston Catholic Academy came marching into school dressed as saints! After choosing a saint they admired, researching about their life, and writing a speech about their saint, they were excited to share their knowledge with the nation! They were honored to be part of a TV Mass said by Father Casey which was filmed at the Catholic TV Network in Watertown. The Mass aired live on the Catholic TV Network on Thursday, October 31st. On Nov. 1st, All Saints Day, the 4th graders also took part in the Mass at St. Brigid Church along with the 5th graders and all the students, families, teachers and staff of SBCA who came to honor all the saints. We all joined

the Children’s Choir in singing the entrance song “When the Saints Go Marching In. Father Greg ory Vozzo, Parochial Vicar, was the celebrant at this Mass and Deacon Matt Janeczko, OFM said the homily. The 5th graders did a wonderful job with the readings, Prayers of the Faithful; bring the gifts up to the altar and Altar Serving. The 4th graders did a wonderful job at telling us about the saint they were dressed up as. We had St. Francis of Assisi, St. Katherine Drexel, St. Matilda, St. Nick, St. Agatha, St. Therese the Little Flower, St. Joshua, St. Patrick, St. Kateri Tekakwitha, St. Bridget, St. Anthony, St. Michael the Archangel, St. Stephen, St. Peter Claver, Joan of Arc, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Catherine of Sienna, Mother Teresa and St. Clare.
