Next Tuesday, November 11, Americans will honor all Veterans who have served in our Armed Forces. It’s a day to thank them for keeping us safe and preserving our freedom. If you know a veteran, make it a point to contact him or her and thank them for everything they’ve done for us. They deserve it.

Elections 2014: A Repudiation

This is being written early – very early (6 a.m.) – Wednesday morning, November 5. It’s the day after the General Election, but it’s not quite over yet (although it should be). Martha Coakley, Democratic candidate for Governor, hasn’t conceded, although she trails Republican candidate Charlie Baker by more than 1% and there are less than 1% of the votes left to be counted. Go figure.

But it has actually been over since yesterday evening: Congratulations, Governor Baker, and Lieutenant Governor Polito.

South Boston Online is using the word “repudiation” advisedly, especially in a blue state like Massachusetts. But take a quick look nationwide. Predictions of Republicans capturing the U.S. Senate were more than fulfilled – they easily took seven seats yesterday, exceeding all expectations (even their own!). And they added an estimated 14 seats in the House. Washington got thumped. To quote a headline from the Eisenhower era – “It was time for a change.”

But we, the voters, should not take much consolation in this, if any at all.

Because we are the individuals who put our present crop of incumbents into office. Please don’t ever forget that. Since 2000, we, the voters – aided and abetted

by those who didn’t bother to vote – have elected far too many inexperienced or outright incompetent office seekers.

If you are looking for a local reason for the 2014 election results, consider this: Independent voters in Massachusetts, usually called “unenrolled” voters, are a larger group than either Democrats or Republicans – almost a majority. The party system, meaning both parties, has lost much of its mojo. Even in the “bluest state”.

The political analysts will talk the 2014 General Election to death, in part because the Presidential Election is two long years from now (in the meantime, you have

to talk about something if you want to get published). It’s also because all of our political pundits, especially the local news people, completely failed to predict what a tsunami the 2014 Election would turn out to be.

South Boston Online will share a few random thoughts of our own: - The “repudiation” we mentioned was mostly centered on economic issues, especially issues relating to jobs. Did you know that true unemployment is not 5.9%, it’s actually just over 11 %?

- “Repudiation” was also triggered by the disastrous rollout of the Affordable Care Act, here in Massachusetts as well as in

Washington.

- The votes on the four ballot issues were also revealing – The votes on Questions One and Two (gas tax, bottle bill) politely told the state’s lawmakers to leave us alone. Question Three (casinos) essentially said the same thing, “Leave us alone. We voted for casinos years ago; get moving on them.” Question Four (sick pay) passed because of an intense grass-roots effort, coupled with its being yet another jobrelated economic issue.

South Boston Online believes there is one, central message in the 2014 off-year General Election.

We’ll state it as briefly as we can: “To our newly-elected and incumbent officials: Congratulations on the 2014 General Election. Please stay in your offices here in Massachusetts or in Washington; spend your time managing our Commonwealth’s affairs as skillfully as you can. Please fly off on no junkets, institute no sweeping plans, and especially, dream up no new ‘visions’.

We want you to forget ‘the vision thing’.

Stay home and ‘mind the store’. Please.”

“Let’s Talk!”: The Second Dialogue on Substance Abuse

“Let’s Talk!” is program sponsored by the Youth Ambassadors from the South Boston Community Health Center. “Let’s Talk!” consists of a series of conversations – a dialogue between youth and adults about substance abuse in the South Boston community. The first such event took place in the Boys & Girls Club. The second community dialogue was last Tuesday night at the Tierney Learning Center in the Old Colony Housing Development.

This event was an opportunity to share information, develop communications, get answers to questions about substance abuse, and (for a few) to seek help with difficulties caused by substance abuse. The “medium” was conversations between young people and adults with experience in substance abuse problems. This was the second dialogue. It was intentionally set in a smaller setting in the Tierney, and broken up into small groups, who sat in a tight circle and just talked. Everyone agreed this was a good format.

Much of the program was devoted to seeking information – “What really are drugs?”, “What can they do to me,

my family, and my friends?”, “What can I do for a friend or relative who is addicted?”, “Where can I myself go for help?” Some of these conversations must be considered confidential, since they might have involved individuals who are having problems with substance abuse, either on their own or among their families and friends.

These dialogues will continue, but in the meantime, please remember that help with substance abuse problems is readily available in South Boston.

These community dialogues are sponsored by the South Boston Community Health Center’s Youth Ambassadors Program, in collaboration with the Hope & Recovery Coalition, the Gavin Foundation, the South Boston Boys & Girls Club, the South Boston Neighborhood House, the Laboure Center, the South Boston CAN Youth Council, the South Boston Collaborative Center, and South Boston en Accion.

REMINDER: The 10th Annual Community Day is on Saturday, November 15, at the Ironworkers Local #7 Hall (9:30 a.m. till 2 p.m., 195 Old Colony Avenue). All are welcome, especially young people; please plan to attend.

UMass Boston at Fifty

In 1964, the Massachusetts legislature approved the opening of a Boston branch of the University of Massachusetts. The branch was located on Arlington Street in the South End, near Park Plaza and the border of the Downtown Theater District.

Fifty years later, UMass Boston - as it is commonly called – has a vibrant, thriving college campus complex on Boston’s Columbia Point, also known as Harbor Point.

Columbia Point (just to make a point) is also the home of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, the Edward M. Kennedy Senate Institute, Boston College High School, and the Massachusetts Archives. The Point has become a true intellectual resource center that rivals any other such location in Boston and the surrounding area. To mince no words, it has become world class. And UMass Boston sports unmatched views of Boston Harbor to the east and the City of Boston skyline to the west.

In this year of 2014 A.D., UMass Boston celebrates its 50th Anniversary. Perhaps fittingly, the first formal observance of this Anniversary took place October 7 on Boston Common. Not only is the

Common proximate to UMass Boston’s original location, it’s also the nation’s first public gathering space – used for grazing cows, militia musters, public protests, and simply getting out of doors to enjoy the fickle Boston weather from the earliest colonial times till the present. That day, there was a lunch, a concert, various tent talks, and an address by Dr. Victoria Kennedy.

This article concerns the 50th Anniversary reception held in the Campus Center Thursday evening, October 16. About a hundred people gathered – faculty, students, administrators, and invited guests, many of them prominent boosters of UMass Boston. The momentous nature

of UMass Boston turning 50 was the main topic. Snatches of conversation referred to 100 years ago (World War I), 150 years ago (the Civil War), and 200 years back (the end of the War of 1812 and the writing of “The Star Spangled Banner”). It was a joyful gathering, with a background of elegant music by pianist Paul Kenneally (pauljkenneally65@gmail.com) and sumptuous refreshments, including (what else?) New England clam chowder.

Chancellor Keith Motley spoke after a short video of UMass Boston’s progress on Columbia Point. He talked of how young people come to UMass Boston and then stay in Boston, making a huge difference in the community. “As we grow, our students are caught up here as I was. Thank you for that, and welcome.”

Motley mentioned that the student body has grown from 1,200 at first to 17,000 this anniversary year of 2014. Four new buildings are under construction and will be completed within a year (even Chancellors aren’t immune to puns – Motley said, “My favorite bird is a crane.”). He mentioned the large number of students who transfer into UMass Boston, and then closed by wishing that “every one of us will want learn something new every day.”

Well spoken.

As UMass Boston finishes its 50th year, remember that a degree from UMass Boston is still one of the best bargains in Boston, which is now one of the most expensive cities in the nation.

Deb will be exhibiting her latest paintings and discussing her recent experimentation with style.

Recently, she has begun painting portraits and other subjects as well.

Deb has exhibited as far away as South Carolina for a featured art exhibit titled “CARscapes—Three Artists Drawn to Style and Speed.”

She has been a consistent award winner at the annual Marina Bay annual exhibit, and last winter her depiction of Copley Square in winter was runnerup in a Boston Mayoral contest to choose a painting representative of Boston.

The Boston Transportation Bandits Department sorely lacks common sense and compassion in the issuance of parking tickets

Recently I was the recipient of a $40 parking ticket from the Boston Transportation Department (aka the Bandits) for parking within twenty feet of a crosswalk. I’ve parked at that exact same location many times before and never received a ticket. Are the Bandits serious? The crosswalk in question, easily thirty-five yards in length, is the one begins at the intersection of Marine and Columbia Roads and ends near N Street.

SOUTHIE TO THE BANDITS: We don’t know if you’re aware of it, but we have a DEFCON 1 parking crisis in Southie, which is affecting our quality of life and making our wallets lighter. Can you do us

SOUTHIE TO BTD COMMISSIONER JAMES GILLOOLY: At the last parking meeting held at the Tynan school cafeteria a few months

ago, you said, upon inquiry, that vehicles wouldn’t be ticketed if they were near crosswalks at intersections, unless they were parked right on the crosswalks. My car was parked at least six feet away from the end of the crosswalk. Let me repeat, I wasn’t parked on the crosswalk and more importantly, wasn’t blocking any access to pedestrians, nor was an impediment to fire, police or ambulances at this intersection. So, again, why the ticket?

Inconsistent and arbitrary ticketing by the BTD needs to stop.

If you agree with me, please call Commissioner Gillooly’s office and lodge a complaint.

Maybe if he gets enough phone calls, he’ll understand, and instruct his staff that our parking woes don’t need to be exacerbated by unnecessary fines.

Grassroots Movement To Rename Waterfront Park For Mayor Thomas M. Menino Hits Milestone Over 1,000 signatures gathered in two days Tributes to Mayor Thomas M. Menino are pouring in and one local resident has begun a movement to rename one of Boston’s great parks after the Mayor. The petition entitled “Rename Christopher Columbus Park as Tom Menino Park” which is found online at www.TomMeninoPark.org has reached over 1,000 signatures by word of mouth. The petition went up on Friday October 31.

The petition reads, in part: “The residents of City Of Boston resident and so many others mourn the passing of Tom Menino who did so much for the city and will surely be remembered as one of our very best mayors. Much will be said and written about how he should be honored and we, the signers of this petition, believe that that Christopher Columbus Park on the waterfront adjacent to the North End should be renamed Tom Menino Park in his

honor.

“It seems that there could be no more fitting tribute than the renaming of this prominent park that anchors the Greenway that is such a symbol of the city he worked tirelessly to reshape.

“Please Mayor Walsh, grant the petitioners request and make 2015 the year of Tom Menino Park.”

What better place in the city to honor its longest serving Mayor? Mayor Menino loved being outside, with the people, in the neighborhoods. A park seems like such a fitting place to honor his legacy.”

The park is located on Boston’s waterfront in the North End and is bordered by the Boston Marriott Long Wharf, Atlantic Avenue and Commercial Wharf.

Meet the Dynamic Donovan Duo Young brother and sister are busy in school, sports, and with family

At home they both enjoy drawing and painting. They like to read and help each other with their respective homework assignments. They’re both doing well in school because their parents stress school first and then leisurely pursuits, such as sports, second. They’ve played in the South Boston Youth Soccer League (SBYSL) before they could tie their sneakers. In the world of softball, baseball, and basketball, they began playing at the instructional level.

So, they’re busy in school. Busy in sports. Busy having fun with their mom and dad at home and when they vacation in Maine, New Hampshire, and Cape Cod. They are the beloved children of Mark and Carol

Anne (Canavan) Donovan. Their grandparents are Mary and Tom Canavan, and Jimmy and the late Carol Anne (Russo) Donovan. They are Owen and Rebecca Donovan.

Owen, 10, is in the fifth grade at the South Boston Catholic Academy.

His favorite subject is science and someday he hopes on being a zoologist and travel around the world.

favorite food is bacon, especially when it’s in a BLT made by either his mom or dad. And, his favorite professional athlete is Red Sox slugger, David Ortiz.

Owen’s favorite sport is hoop. He started playing hoop in the Gate of Heaven CYO basketball program He’s currently being coached

by Greg Lally in the midget house league, and will again be playing on a travel team when those games begin in December. He also plays on his school team and is a member of the AAU Southie Stars, coached by Marc Iannaco. He’ll never forget hitting his first three-pointer from the top of the key last season for Gatey.

“I enjoy pitching,” he said. “I feel good when I’m on the mound.” Last summer, he was on the Red Sox and was managed by Paul Breen.

Lastly, our young lad is active in the SBYSL. “I like running around the field after the ball,” he said. “I really like scoring goals.”

If Owen was the President of the United States, he said that he would, “…Build better schools, have better education, help injured and sick animals, and find cures for (human) diseases.”

Rebecca, 12, is in the seventh grade at Boston Latin. “I like school,” she said. “It’s different, bigger than my other school. I like finding my way to class.” Her favorite subject is reading and someday she’d like to be a Boston Police Officer.

Rebecca’s favorite color is purple.

Her favorite food is also bacon.

She loves listening to 5 Seconds of Summer, which is an Australian pop rock/pop punk group. She must have a good ear for music because she’s been taking piano lessons once a week for five years and is a pretty good pianist. And finally, her favorite pro is Red Sox star, Dustin Pedroia.

Gate Hoop Begins Fifty-First Season Time for the games to begin

It’s time to dust off those basketball sneakers and head up to the Walsh Center Gym to participate in the Gate of Heaven CYO basketball program. Boys and girls from the instructional level all the way up to high school are welcome to play on house and travel league teams. The instructional and house leagues have just begun and travel league games begin on the first Saturday in December.

The boy’s midget house league for grades three through five is overseen by boy’s commissioner, Sean Monahan. The games are at 1 and 2 pm.

“We’re about to start our fiftyfirst season of Gatey CYO basketball,” said Monahan. “It’s always fun at the beginning of the season. There are always a few kids who grew quite a bit since the last time we saw them. The players moving up to the older leagues are a little nervous while the veterans are looking forward to meet up with their teammates for another great season.”

Every year there are more than six million motor vehicle accidents in the United States. The unwise habit of tailgating is one cause of far too many preventable accidents on our roadways.

Stated simply, tailgating is dangerous.

Tailgating occurs when an impatient driver travels too closely behind the car in front of him or her. Tailgaters are often unable to react in time if the vehicle in front of them suddenly brakes.

The practice of tapping one’s brake’s in an attempt to get a tailgater to back off is dangerous and results in many traffic accidents.

Recently, I was driving on the Mass. Pike to Brighton when I had a front-actually a side row seat, to a textbook, tailgatingrelated accident. It was raining and traffic was heavy. Suddenly, I heard the screeching of brakes and a small truck plowed right into vehicle in front of it. Seconds later, another bang as the vehicle behind the small truck plowed into it.

Fearful the accident would expand into my lane I slowed down momentarily and looked in my rear view mirror, hoping I wouldn’t be rear-ended. As I drove another ten feet I realized

that there was a minor threecar mishap in the same passing lane. The second mishap could have been averted if the driver involved in this second accident wasn’t tailgating.

Too many people are in a hurry, stressed, and believe that tailgating will speed up their journey. But this is faulty thinking.

These drivers just prove that they’re immature, impatient or just careless. One way to get a handle on this is to follow these simple rules.

Drive at a speed which will allow you to stop safely behind the car in front of you. Always travel at a lower speed than the legal speed limit during poor road conditions. This will give you more time to react under less than optimum conditions.

Leave enough space between your car and the vehicle in front of you in case it suddenly slows down or stops. The rule of thumb is to allow ten feet of distance for every increase of ten mph that you are driving. So, if you are driving at fifty miles an hours, you should leave fifty feet of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. In inclement weather such as rain, fog, or snow, you should double that formula.

Inconsiderate drivers need to smarten up and realize they are responsible, not only for themselves, but also for others.

It could mean the difference between life and death.
