Recovery Month: Full of Joy This is the 11th article in South Boston Online’s series on South Boston’s drug crisis. Last month (September) was Recovery Month. Recovery – the ultimate answer to the drug crisis - was celebrated in Southie in many joyful ways. In our remaining articles, we’ll talk more about getting people into recovery – it works!

At the end of August, South Boston Online wrote about police enforcement aimed at drug dealers.

This is serious, dedicated policing.

Early in September synthetic marijuana suddenly appeared in South Boston – until our City Council passed an ordinance forbidding its sale. Why? Because it really isn’t marijuana – that’s why. It’s poison!

Recovery Month – a really joyful time. So, we published a list that described the upcoming Recovery Month events around here. We’ll describe a few of them more fully in this article, so that you can see how upbeat recovery really is. People who are fortunate enough to get into recovery live a life of joy – filled with parties, observances, and celebrations.

On Saturday night, September 18, the Gavin Foundation threw its annual Recovery Month Celebration at the IBEW Hall on Freeport Street in Dorchester. A taco buffet, free photographs, and a closing concert were among the attractions. John McGahan, President of the Gavin Foundation, opened the program. The IBEW’s Chuck Monahan extended his welcome to the jam-packed hall full of people in recovery. Fr. Joe White offered continued on page 2

Recovery Month a Blessing by reciting the Serenity Prayer. A personal story of recovery then followed.

There were two awards: Massachusetts’ Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders presented an Impact Award to Joanne Peterson, the Founder/ Director of Learn to Cope. Peterson left her job to do this, meeting (as she worded it) “so many beautiful friends”. Congressman Stephen Lynch conferred the second Impact Award upon Quincy’s Mayor Thomas Koch. Koch started Quincy’s drug prevention campaign by insisting that the Police Depart-

WWW.SOUTHBOSTONONLINE.COM ment become proficient in administering NARCAN. The Recovery Month Celebration concluded with a concert by the rocking cover band, Doug Bell and the Bellevue Cadillac.

Sunday, September 27, is traditionally celebrated as Recovery Day. The Devine Recovery Center held a barbecue in the afternoon. An estimated 250 consumed uncounted hot dogs and hamburgers, while going back and forth into the Devine Center to watch the Patriots demolish the Jaguars. It was a family day, with kids of all ages playing and eating along with the adults.

Early that evening, the South Boston Collaborative Center and

the Hope & Recovery Coalition held its Annual Hope & Recovery Walk and Overdose Vigil. The walkers gathered in front of the Devine Center and proceeded along Day Boulevard a mile and a half to the bandstand in Marine Park.

Their way was lit by a huge “Super Moon” that rose just before sunset.

After the walkers arrived at 6:45, Collaborative Director Andy Ward began the Vigil. Several speakers – Paige L., Keith L., Scott P., Edie M., Nicole H., Jackie W., Theresa O., and Corey P. - shared their recovery experiences with those at the Vigil.

The names of South Boston people lost to drugs overdoses during the last five years were slowly recited – all 294 of them. Fr. Souza, the

Pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish complex, gave the closing prayer.

At the end of the Vigil, Robyn Phillips led the participants over to the beach. Hot air balloons with candles at their bases were lit, and they slowly lofted into the sky, like thoughts reaching up to those who have passed on. It was a gripping sight – a fitting reminder of life, as well as how fleeting and precious life is. Coincidentally, the total eclipse of the “Super Moon” followed two hours later.

Time to Fight Back Too many hearts being broken, too many are dying before their time.

I’ve attended many funerals in my lifetime. Church pews are filled. Tears are shed. Hearts are broken. All funerals are sad. Some are extremely sad, devastating, because loved ones are taken from us before their time.

Drug overdoses are rising at an alarming rate. Forty-four thousand people died from drug overdoses in 2013, twice the number that it was in 1999.

More than half of those deaths were related to the abuse of prescription drugs, specifically opioid painkillers like Vicodin and Oxycontin. In the city of Manchester, New Hampshire, hundreds of drug overdoses have occurred since last January. Last week in Chicago, within a seventy-two hour period, seventy-four people went to emergency rooms for heroin overdoses possibly laced with the painkiller, fentanyl.

It’s time that we as a nation redouble-triple our efforts to battle this epidemic. It’s time more local, state, and federal money is allocated to fight this enemy from within. The mil-

lions of federal dollars-foreign aid-should be rerouted and used to help our citizens. No sense in assisting others if our house is in need of repairs.

We need to concentrate on funding more drug-treatment and drug-education programs.

People must realize that abusing prescription painkilling drugs may eventually lead to heroin use, because for the price of a six pack of beer, you can buy a bag of dope. With supply and demand in play, heroin is cheap and available everywhere.

We need to concentrate on the street-dealers and shut them down. Send out the message that we are serious. Hit them hard and as often as possible.

Get them out of our communities and put them in prison.

Enforce our drug laws and don’t let them plea-bargain their way back into our neighborhoods so they can sell their poison to our kids. If we stop the streetdealers the drug kingpins won’t have the thugs to do their bidding. This approach may be over-simplistic but we need to do more than what we are doing now.

We need to rev up our drug war at home and muster the resolve to win at all costs.

We owe it to our children and our future.

Fifth Annual EBSB 5K Bay Run/Walk

Fall is definitely here, when the Annual East Boston Savings Bank (EBSB) holds its 5K Bay Run/Walk. The tenth such event took place last Sunday, October 5, in support of the

EBSB Charitable Foundation.

The fall weather was evident – a stiff and very cool wind blew in from the northeast; puffy gray clouds alternated with bands of sunshine.

There were a few splashes of fall color, laong with masses

of acorns (and squirrels) on the ground. Although cool, at least it wasn’t the Carolina rains.

A solid time of 16:19 was clocked by overall winner, John Stansel, despite the wind. The 5K Bay Run record is a light-

ning 14:51, set back in 2010.

It was another great race, and a nice warming walk as well. It was solemnly joyful to see so many MR-8 runners take part, in memory of young Martin Richard who died in the Marathon bombing.

Police at District Hall

The Boston Police Department, led by Commissioner William Evans, continues to work on developing greater community involvement. Last week, there was a community meeting in District Hall. Many from the South Boston’s Fort Point and Waterfront neighborhoods attended. Comm. Evans, Capt.

John Greland (who commands South Boston’s Station C-6 at B and West Broadway), and several police officers were on hand.

C-6 Community Services Officer Tim Gaughan and Kerry Ryan, BPD Director of Community Engagement, opened the meeting. Capt. Greland

was introduced; Commissioner Evans spoke emphatically about the need for more assistance from every member of the South Boston community. Numerous questions from those in attendance were answered.

Here are a few BPD community activities that you should know about: Be sure to attend the BPD’s Fraud Seminar if your business takes credit cards (NOV 10, 10 a.m., Dorothy Quincy Suite, John Hancock Building). The BPD Cadet Program is back for any young men or women interested in a law enforcement career. “311” is a new phone number to call for NON-EMERGENCY city services. The Neighborhood Watch Unit can be called at 617-343-4345.

With Muslim domination of the trade routes throughout the Middle East a dangerous hindrance for Europeans, Christopher Columbus (Cristoforo Colombo in Italian) was hoping to find a safer route to China and India. His quest would end in the discovery of the New World-the Americas.

In 1486, Columbus presented his plan to the Portuguese king, John II, and then to

those in power in Genoa and Venice. He was rejected. He subsequently appealed to the Spanish monarchy, Queen Isabella of Castille and Ferdinand of Aragon. Skeptical, they initially shied away, but in January of 1492, when the Spanish army captured the last Muslim stronghold in Granada, they agreed to finance his expedition.

Columbus and his crew on the now-famous ships, the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria, left Spain to seek out the Far East by a direct route from the west.

vessels, very fit for such an enterprise, and having provided myself with abundance of stores and seamen, I set sail from the port on Friday, the 3rd of August, half an hour before sunrise and steered for the Canary Islands.”

Unaware of the America’s standing in his oceanic path, his three ships landed in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Columbus from the Santa Maria, Martin Alonzo Pinzon of the Pinta, and Yincent Yanez Pinzon, the captain of the Nina, were the first to step on land. They had landed on an island in the Bahamas archipelago that Columbus named San Salvador. The Old World had indeed stumbled upon the New World and a new age of exploration was about to unfold on the world stage.

Columbus would ultimately be known as the explorer who changed the world. But it must be noted that although he wasn’t the first European explorer to reach the Americas (Leif Ericson did so in the 11th century), Columbus’ voyages led to the first lasting European contact with the New World, beginning a period which had an enormous impact in the development of the modern Western world.

The first Columbus Day celebration was held in 1792, the 300th anniversary of Columbus’ arrival in the New World.

The New York political organization, the Columbian Order, held the event. In 1892, President Benjamin Harrison proclaimed that Friday, October 12th would be set aside to celebrate the 400th anniversary.

In 1937, the Knights of Columbus lobbied President Franklin D. Roosevelt to establish Columbus Day as a federal holiday. Although FDR created the first federal observance, President Richard Nixon issued a subsequent presidential proclamation, designating Monday, October 9, 1972 as Columbus Day,

inviting “…The people of this nation to observe that day in schools, churches and other suitable places with appropriate ceremonies in honor of the great explorer.” The District of Columbia in Washington, D.C., was named after Christopher Columbus. Of Course, the name Washington was to honor our first President, George Washington.

South Boston’s “T” Improvement

It was called the “South Boston Bus Stop & Service Program”. It was presented on September 30 by Ralph De Nisco, a Principal of Nelson Nygaard, who are transportation consultants. This was the second such session – an identical presentation had been made at the Condon Community Center a week earlier.

The presentation was introduced by the “T’s” Chris Foley, who asked anyone wanting to ask a question to sign up in advance. About 50 responded. The Community Center at the Tynan was filled with an estimated 200-250 people.

The difficulties and poor service capabilities of South Boston’s MBTA operations were starkly demonstrated during this winter’s record-breaking snowstorms.

While it is true that operating difficulties are to be expected in severe weather, this last winter caused a nearly total “T” shutdown at many points. This led to a study of all “T” operations, including our five bus lines - #5, 7, 9, 10, 11. It was generally agreed (and recommended

by Nelson Nygaard Consultants) that bus stops have to be both reduced and improved.

You’ll recall that the severe storms in January-February resulted in inbound “T” routes being switched from Fourth Street to East Broadway. This was going to be changed back in the spring, until the City and the “T” changed their minds

and decided to do a study instead. There were many comments asking for one or the other, but a majority of the speakers seemed to favor keeping the inbound routes on East Broadway, which was also one of the consultants’ major recommendations.

The many comments from the crowd were presented emphatically; they were orderly and courteously stated. These were well thought out, and made at least as much sense as those from the consultants. It is interesting to note that each participant in the meeting’s wrap-up made their points quite clearly. Our elected officials, who are responsible for adequately funding the “T”, had better listen – there were some representatives from their offices at the Tynan meeting, but the only official there in person was City Councilor-at-Large Michael Flaherty.

We’ll conclude with a cross-section of comments made from the floor: One woman told the consultants, “You should ride buses you’re analyzing”.

There was silence at the consultants’ table.

Many (most?) of the comments dealt with the poor quality of the drivers and the unreliability of the buses (lack of maintenance?), including many bus runs that are canceled without notice.

Put a “How’s my driving” phone contact number on every bus and, “Why can’t you replace drivers who call in sick?”

One commentator made an excellent

point: “Why doesn’t the City of Boston refuse to grant any more new development permits until additional transportation to handle the development is in place.”

Several pointed comments accused the Nelson Nygaard recommendations of being “predetermined” before they ever began their consulting work.

Near to the end of the Tynan meeting, one commentator emphatically stated that the MBTA’s major problem and the key first step is, “Find the money!” It is a fact that the “T” has been chronically underfunded, so it’s time for government officials to listen up.

The meeting’s South Boston participants are to be complimented on their preparation, which included facts, photographs, and careful thought.

Coppersmith Hosts Food Bank

This was held at one of South Boston’s newest establishments – Coppersmith on West Third Street, who have already made a difference supporting various worthy causes in and around South Boston.

The Greater Boston Food Bank is located off Southampton Street, just outside of Andrew Square. Its aim is to provide any hungry person with at least one good meal a day; 92 cents of every dollar donated goes directly toward this aim. As the Food Bank’s slogan says, “Every $1 provides 3 healthy meals.”

It was a fantastic afternoon at the Devine Recovery Center on Recovery Day.

Each year, many members of the South Boston Art Association (the SBAA) enter exhibitions and shows in other areas.

They always do well in the judging, which is conducted by art professionals. The recent Quincy Art Fest was no exception: Deb Putnam got “Best of Show” (Juried Oil) for “A Matter of Time”.

Judith Sweeney got “Best of Show” (Photography) for “Thanksgiving Preview”.

Dan McCole received “Member First Place” for “Rigging the Sails”.

Deb Putnam scored Second Place ( Juried Oil & Acrylic) for “Mass. Ave. Beauty”.

Joe Kebartas, Harold Cunniff, and Judith Sweeney also sold their works at the Quincy Art Fest.

Join us in congratulating them at the next SBAA meeting – this Saturday, OCT 10, at 9:30 a.m. in the Curley Community Center (M Street entrance). It’s open to the public, free, and refreshments will be served.

TYNAN HAPPENINGS COMPLETE AFTER SCHOOL TIME (C.A.S.T.) The Tynan Community Center C.A.S.T. Program has begun for children Grades K-5 (child needs to be at least 5 years old). There are still slots available for anyone interested in registering. The program begins at 2:30 pm and ends at 6:00pm, Monday through Friday. It offers homework help, recreational activities, arts & crafts, and a nutritional snack on a daily basis at a cost of $20 a week. It is geared towards working parents looking for an affordable after school structured program. The Tynan Community Center was privileged to have two members of Boston’s Finest (BPD), Jacqui McHale Sellon and Rich Litto, come and facilitate a self-defense course call R.A.D. Rape Aggression Defense. We are lucky to have a strong relationship with our local neighborhood police. Youth Worker, Katie O’Connell, and a group of teen girls gained substantial tactics and techniques that they will carry with them for life. We would also like to thank City Councilor, Bill Linehan, for his generous contribution to our course completion celebration. The food was delicious!!

GYM NOTES TOTS GYM

There are still slots available for the Tots Gym Program held on Monday and Thursday afternoons, from 3-4 p.m.

The class is designed for boys and girls ages 4-6. They will enjoy some free play time followed by recreational group games that will keep them physically active and help in the development of their motor skills.

JUNIOR GYM

Junior Gym has slots still available for boys and girls 7-11. Program is on Monday and Thursdays from 4-5 p.m.

The children will enjoy meeting new friends while learning various recreational games that will keep them busy and active.

FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Flag Football will begin practice sessions on Tuesday afternoons for boys and girls ages 7-11. Anyone interested in participating should come by the gym to register. Practice sessions will continue through October, teams will be formed in November, and the league will begin at this time.

FLOOR HOCKEY LEAGUE

The Floor Hockey League will be held on Fridays from 3:30-5:00 p.m. We will conduct practice sessions and form teams by the end of the month. Any boy or girl 7-11 interested should stop by and see Robbie Walton or Sherike Morris to register.

ADULT COED VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE

It’s that time of year again to begin the Coed Volleyball League. We will have the net set up on Thursday October 15th and October 22nd for practice time and for anyone interested in joining a team form 7-9 p.m. There are teams that are looking for players. It is a recreational league that many enjoy. Player abilities and skill level vary on each team. If interested, please stop by the gym on the above nights to practice and register or contact the Community Center office for further details @ (617) 635-5110.
