Funding for South Boston Programs and Services Sen. Forry & Rep. Collins Secure Funds for South Boston in State FY16 Budget. Secure over $1.3 million in Funding for South Boston programs and services Senator Linda Dorcena Forry and Representative Nick Collins joined their colleagues in the Massachusetts Legislature to pass a $38.1 billion state budget for Fiscal Year 2016 (FY16). The spending plan reaffirms a commitment to public health and safety, education, and family and youth services, especially in the areas of substance abuse treatment and prevention.

“I am proud of the results that Representative Collins and I were able to achieve on behalf of the South Boston community,” said Senator Linda Dorcena Forry. “These state funds will allow neighborhood programs to thrive and continue to

serve residents of South Boston and provide an opportunity for a better future.”

“Many dedicated groups and advocates worked very hard to secure support in this year’s budget. Nothing is ever guaranteed and it takes strong advocacy in the House and Senate to deliver for our community, especially when there is a budget deficit,” said Rep. Nick Collins. “Senator Forry and I are pleased to have obtained funding to ensure our community will have the services necessary to maintain a high quality of life in our neighborhoods for all citizens.”

Total Eclipse of the “Super Moon”

In the recent lunar eclipse, the moon was as close to the Earth as it ever gets – a so-called “Super Moon”. It entered the Earth’s shadow at 9:07 p.m. Sunday night, September 27, and was completely eclipsed at 10:11, except for a dull red disc from the refracted sunlight passing through our atmosphere. To address important family service needs, Sen. Forry and Rep. Collins secured funding in the FY16 budget for agencies that have demonstrated measurable impact on the South Boston community. The budget includes funding for Julie’s Family Learning Center which provides services to families and single moth-

WWW.SOUTHBOSTONONLINE.COM ers, helping them break the cycle of poverty. The FY16 budget also allocates funding for the Labouré Center’s Recovery Connections Program which supports children and families affected by substance abuse.

With substance abuse at crisis levels across the Commonwealth, particularly relative to the opiate epidemic, Sen. Forry and Rep. Collins were able to secure state funding for the Gavin Foundation, the South Boston Collaborative Center and the Answer House to provide critical substance abuse prevention and

treatment services to those in need.

Always considering public safety a priority, Sen. Forry and Rep. Collins also restored funding for dedicated police patrols along Day Boulevard.

With South Boston’s legacy as a community that honors its veterans, Sen. Forry and Rep. Collins worked to secure authorization and funding to build the Massachusetts Iraq & Afghanistan Fallen Heroes Memorial on the South Boston Waterfront. The Memorial will honor all post-9/11 military service members of the Commonwealth who died while serving in Iraq, Afghanistan

and other operations across the globe.

Additionally, in order to support services and programs for the City of Boston, Sen. Forry and Rep. Collins helped secure roughly $174 million in unrestricted general government state aid for the City of Boston and an additional $212 million in Chapter 70 funding for the Boston Public Schools.

The budget passed with overwhelming support in both the House of Representatives and the Senate has been signed into law by the Governor.

Brooke Spaulding – Baker, Architect, Entrepreneur

Brooke Spaulding dropped in at the South Boston Online office last month. She comes from Bath, Maine, but she has become a transplanted Bostonian; she even possesses street creds as a South Bostonian. Brooke graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology, majoring in Architecture. She lived in an apartment in South Boston for two years. And last but certainly not least, Brooke currently works at P&G Gillette on A Street.

These are not her only connections to South Boston. Brooke is a baker and an inventor of cooking tools (more about those later), who decided to take part in the Annual Gingerbread House Contest at the South Boston Branch Library. This is a two-year-old event sponsored by the South Boston Arts Association (the SBAA); it takes place during the Christmas Season.

Using her dual skills in and combined passions for baking and architectural design, Brooke designed a gingerbread scene in Year One based on the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer story (and the song by Gene Autry). Her entry won the very first SBAA First Prize. Last December in 2014, Brooke submitted another

entry - an A-framed ski chalet in a balsam evergreen grove that blew the judges away. That garnered Brooke her second SBAA First Prize.

Brooke is pursuing her academic background in Architecture as well.

She is the Facilities Operations Manager at the P&G Gillette complex here in South Boston. This is a demanding position covering services, maintenance, and effective utilization of the structures on that plant site. As befits a marketing organization like P&G Gillette, they employ a professional facility management firm named SODEXO. SODEXO is the firm to whom Brooke actually reports, even though she’s assigned full time (and more) to the P&G Gillette site.

There is a third facet to Brooke’s talents: She has an entrepreneurial mindset. She designs and invents, from concept through actual prototype, a unique line of baking tools.

Her enterprise, which is presently being launched, is called “Morsel Baking Tools”.

We mentioned those words “prototype” and “launched”. Well, Brooke has actually developed her first finished product. It’s a set of three cookie cutters designed to create beautiful and modern patterns with your baked goods. She is marketing this under the header “Modern Morsel: Cookie Cutters for the Modern Baker”. We won’t waste words describing something that is better seen for itself.

Please just take a look at the accompanying photo to visualize what you might do with a “Modern Morsel” set of your own.

How does an entrepreneur start a business? That’s a good question. The answer usually includes the statement, “Get some seed money.” Brooke has created what is known as a “Crowd Funding” campaign on Kickstarter.

Crowd Funding is a modern way to obtain rapid support via the Internet, by seeking small amounts of capital from a (very) large number of individual participants. As you can imagine, it’s a highly effective way for a small business to get itself off the ground.

Boys & Girls Clubhouse Formally Reopens

It took a year – a long year – but the South Boston Boys & Girls Clubhouse held its formal reopening on Saturday morning, September 26, 2015, after a multi-million dollar renovation and reconstruction was completed this summer. The renewed signage on the front façade reads “Edgerley Family South Boston Club”, in recognition of the remarkably generous support of Sandra Edgerley, Paul Edgerley, and the entire Edgerley family. The entrance now quite fittingly includes handicapped accessibility and lets into a spacious, colorful,

and well-lit lobby.

Josh Kraft, the CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB) emceed the opening ceremonies. Kraft made specific mention of Steve Reis, who was fatally injured when a platform of construction materials fell on him in January of this year. Reis’s family and friends were present; his wife Jaclyn and his daughter Audrey were presented with a memorial citation. In the tributes to Reis, he was described as someone who would always help another out, and that he considered his work on the new Clubhouse to be “a labor of love”. Stirring, indeed.

reminisced about the Club and his time there. When Steve thanked everyone who helped the project, he made particular mention of the part the sorelymissed Myra Kraft had played in support of the BGCB and the local South Boston Clubhouse over the years. BPD Commissioner William Evans spoke of how the Club was a special place to all. Past Clubhouse Directors Bob Monahan and Ed Hoell (both present) were recognized.

An award to the Edgerley Family was accepted by Sandra Edgerley. In her acceptance remarks, she talked about what she experienced at the Club still influences her, even 30 years later.

The South Boston Club’s current Executive Director Harry Duvall spoke about the Club’s efforts to instill leadership. He specifically thanked other organizations in South Boston who shared their own spaces during the year-long construction, such as the Laboure Center and the BHA’s Tierney Center.

Three Club members – Tara Murphy, Paige Spence, and Gabriel Orailes – gave short talks about their involvement on the Boys & Girls Club. The program closed with a performance by five Club members known as “The Harmaniacs”, who have obviously benefited from the Club’s new music room.

UMass Boston has come a long way since we first opened our doors in September 1965. Fifty years ago, we welcomed 1,200 students, many of whom were underprivileged and undervalued, to the renovated Boston Gas building in Park Square in Boston.

Today, on Boston Harbor, nearly 17,000 students from more than 150 countries—including 4,000 graduate students and 550 Honors College students—have made UMass Boston their first choice. They’ve found a new, state-of-theart Integrated Sciences Complex, and they are looking forward to the opening of University Hall, which will feature premier performing arts spaces and cutting-edge labs, in the coming months.

But our transformation at UMass Boston is not solely physical. We are enhancing our university from the inside out by recruiting expert faculty, expanding our research capacity, developing new academic programs, and increasing the number of internships and experiential learning opportunities we offer.

Super Patriots…Super Fun Patriot’s off to a tremendous start

The New England Patriots are 3-0 and while everyone in New England is ecstatic, NFL fans across the nation are gnashing their teeth in fits of despair. How can the Patriots be so good, they wonder? After all, aren’t they cheaters?

Well the answer is easy. They aren’t cheaters. They’re just got a lot of talent. They have Tom Brady at the helm, and Bill Belichick in the engine room. They have a good running game and a primo-passing game, best in the entire league. The defense is looking solid and the offensive line is holding its own, protecting the QB.

In the season opener, the Patriots defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers, 28-21. Brady threw for 288 yards.

It really wasn’t that close because the Patriots foolishly thought the game was over before it was actually over. They didn’t make the same mental mistake the follow-

ing week, as they demolished the Jacksonville Jaguars, 51-17. They scored on every single possession.

Brady threw for 358 yards. Like a skilled surgeon, the Patriots cut up the Jags and precise fashion.

The Patriots season record since 2001 has been outstanding. They were 11-5 in 2001, 9-7 in 2002, 14-2 in 2003, 14-2 in 2004, 10-6 in 2005, 12-4 in 2006, 16-0 in 2007, 11-5 in 2008, 10-6 in 2009, 14-2 in 2010, 13-3 in 2011, 12-4 in 2012, 12-4 in 2013, and 12-4 in 2014.

This upcoming weekend they have a bye. Like everyone else, I can’t get enough of the Pats and can’t wait for the next game.

The Patriots are loaded and it wouldn’t surprise many fans if they ran the table.

It’s going to be fun to watch.

South Boston: A Maritime Community

We sometimes forget that South Boston is really a maritime community. Most of us patronize our squeaky clean and sun-drenched beaches; many walk Castle Island or the Harborwalk. Increasingly, we go

to South Boston’s enchanting Waterfront – enchanting any time of day or night. Google up a map – you’ll see that the borders of the peninsula we call South Boston (and home) are more than 80% ocean shore-

Two Happy Cheerleaders Two Happy Cheerleaders Love cheering on the players in the South Boston Pop Warner Football League

They’re two wonderful little girls who are having fun every single day. They both go to the Roger Clap Innovation School which is located on Harvest Street in Dorchester. The school’s place-based curriculum “…is the process of using the local community and environment as a starting point to teach concepts in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and other subjects across the curriculum.”

Both young girls keep busy in school and while out of the classroom. Their parents make sure of that. If either one was the President of the United States, they said they’d outlaw cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol. The two happy cheerleaders featured this week in SBOL are Karen Allen and Anna Marek.

Karen Allen, 7, is the daughter of Kim and Matt Allen. She has two older siblings, Brian and Taylor, and a brown, black, and white colored cat named

Murphy. Her favorite color is sky blue and she loves tuna fish. Her favorite entertainer is Sabrina Carpenter, an American singer and actress. Karen’s favorite subject in school is art and someday she hopes to be artist.

“I like to draw sunsets, she said. “I just like to draw and keep busy.”

Karen does keep busy after school. She runs up and down her driveway for

energy and fun. She competes against her friends to see who’s the fastest. She also has fun with her neighbors and friends at the Ryan Playground which is located on Dorchester Avenue. Karen likes to go hiking up the Blue Hills with her parents. In the world of sports, she’s played soccer, taken gymnastic classes for three years, and plans on taking boxing lessons at Peter Welch’s Gym.

Anna Marek, 5, is the daughter of Anna and Artur Marek. She has two brothers named Robert and Kajatan, a sister named Karolina, and an Australian Shepherd named Tex. Her favorite color is green and she loves eating candy. Her favorite subject in school is when the class goes out and plays in the schoolyard. Some she’d like to be a scientist.

In her leisure time, Anna loves going on vacation with her family to either Cape Cod or New Hampshire. She also enjoys going to her friend’s homes and playing games. Anna takes piano and ballet lessons at the Fourth Presbyterian Church on Dorchester Street.

And, she’s learning the Polish language at classes she attends at Saint Mary’s.

Her family is from Poland so her parents want to keep their Polish heritage alive and well in their household.

In the world of sports, Anna is taking swimming lessons and loves cheerleading with Karen and the other cheerleaders.

“I really like cheerleading,” she said. “It is fun...and I get to play with the other girls (on the cheerleading squad) after the game is over.”

Dolley Carlson is living proof that “You can take the girl; out of Southie, but you can’t take Southie out of the girl”. Dolley is now a West Coast resident, a well-known speaker on Christian principles, and a successful author. And, yes, she was born and brought up here in South Boston.

She returns at least once every year to attend the Laboure Christmas House Tours, and more recently, to conduct book-signings for her fulllength novel, “The Red Coat”, which has included signings at Boston’s better known book stores. Dolley is shown above while speaking at the South Boston Branch Library. “The Red Coat” tells the story of a young girl born and raised in South Boston; it gives vivid, authentic, and contrasting pictures of life here and on Beacon Hill.

FriendshipWorks is a nonprofit organization that creates friendships for isolated elders by matching them with volunteers who visit them on a regular basis.

“The purpose of our volunteers is to provide friendship to our elders by doing exactly what friends and family would do for each other,” said Janet Seckel-Cerrotti, Executive Director of FriendshipWorks. “As a volunteer you’re their friend, you’re their support, you’re their champion.”

FriendshipWorks’ goal is to reduce isolation and provide friendly support and assistance to the elders they serve. There are a number of other ways to be involved with FriendshipWorks. Friendly Visiting involves visiting elders in their homes to provide

companionship and assist with simple household tasks or errands; Medical Escort Volunteers accompany elders to medical appointments; Friendly Helpers provide short-term assistance to community elders when they need a little help such as clothes shopping, picking up prescriptions, or running errands; and PetPals provides pet visits to local nursing homes.

All of FriendshipWorks programs are provided to elders in Boston and Brookline for free. Recently, FriendshipWorks began a pilot music program in Jamaica Plain to bring the joy of music into the lives of the elders they serve.

“Music can create joy, bring people together, as well as having the ability to bring back memories,” said Seckel-Cerrotti. “Through this pilot program, we aim to make a difference in the quality of life for many of the elders we serve.”

South Boston Catholic Academy News Students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 had a chance to visit the Vietnam Traveling Wall a replica of the Washington D.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, at Medal of Honor Park on Friday, September 18.

Our students and teachers had a chance to see this impressive, historical wall and to meet with the veterans who volunteered to speak with the students and introduce the Traveling Wall.

Among them was, Mr. Caputo, who did a great job in telling us what it was like to be a soldier during the Vietnam War. Mr. Caputo also told us about the “South Boston Vietnam Veterans Memorial”. The memorial was built with funds raised from the community and $30,000 donated by the City of

Boston. It was designed by, his dear friend, Harry Carrol and dedicated on September 13, 1981. It was a proud moment when he turned to one of our students, Dylan, Harry Carrol’s grandson, and told us of his Papa’s involvement in creating the permanent memorial in remembrance of their 25 fallen friends from the Vietnam War. Our students also met and spoke with two wonderful Marines, Sargent Wright and Sargent Hartman. We want to thank Lorraine Linehan and the South Boston Vietnam Memorial Committee and all who helped to make this amazing and historical event possible for our students at South Boston Catholic Academy.
