Cunniff Scholarship Nominees Recognized âSouth Boston Youth Hockey is committed to building future leaders of the City by providing high quality ice-hockey programsâŚâ BY KEVIN DEVLIN
On Friday evening, January 16, the South Boston Youth Hockey League held their first Teddy Cunniff Scholarship Award dinner. The event was generously hosted by the Boston Beer Garden on East Broadway. The first annual Teddy Cunniff Scholarship Award winner, Eddie Smith, was previously recognized at the leagueâs fundraiser at Carson Place on November 29. But on this night, all of the scholarship-nominees were honored. League board member, Kathy Lafferty, organized this event on behalf of the players. âThe kids deserved this night,â she said.
Nominees with league representatives had a good time at this inaugural awards ceremony.
âThey work hard on the ice and want to be winners. But itâs not just about winning itâs about building character and integrity. âAnd Teddy deserves such an honor,â she added. âHeâs taught kids for years, now heâs teaching their children. Heâs the Pied Piper of hockey in South

mendous job. Kathy did a terrific job organizing this event. Weâre thankful for the Boston Beer Gardenâs generosity and also for the local menâs hockey league (which is also sponsored by the Beer Garden) that gave us the money for this scholarship.â Here are brief bios of the nominees: Brian Cloherty, 14, is a forward on the Bantam âAâ Team. He is constantly encouraging his teammates, is always at practices and games and gives hundred percent on the ice. Brianâs easy to coach, a great kid, and is a big part of the team. Tommy Greeley, 14, also plays forward for the Bantam âAâ team. He is one of the best players on the team, and even though he can score goals, he passes the puck and encourages his teammates. He never misses a practice or game, he listens and learns. Heâs a great kid and also an instrumental part continued on page 9
