Congrats, Pats !

Walsh Sums Up First Year; Speaks to Boston’s Future Mayor Walsh delivered his first SOTC (“State of the City”) speech Tuesday evening in historic Symphony Hall. The speech was commendably brief and to the point. Many people were thanked and remembered; many issues and challenges were touched upon, including education, the 2024 Olympics, “the power of data”, housing costs/shortages, and homelessness. by Rick Winterson

Mayor Martin J. Walsh, after just completing his first year on the job, delivered his initial “State of the City” (SOTC) address last Tuesday. It was a stem-winder of a speech, covering perhaps all of what Boston’s electorate sees as our city’s most critical problems. Fittingly, Mayor Walsh chose Sym-

phony Hall as his venue for SOTC No. 1. Boston’s Symphony Hall is a world cultural landmark – a 114-yearold center for performing and appreciating the finest music on Earth, set within first-class acoustics and more than a century of musical history. And the Mayor’s speech, although filled with details, took just 30 minutes, from 7:30 till 8 p.m. That allowed it to fit into a time slot for media broadcasting – it was carried on WBZ. The Mayor garnered several ovations as he spoke, as well as a prolonged standing ovation at the beginning and the close of his SOTC address. Clearly, we have a Mayor with a talent for eloquence. The evening’s program opened at 7 p.m. with music by the Kenny Elementary School Band. Another musical interlude was provided by the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s string continued on page 6

Melt Your Holiday Bills Away!

Congratulations, Patriots. Your 35 – 31 win over the Ravens, even though the football pundits’ scoring estimates went totally astray, was one of the most exciting playoff games ever played. It was in doubt right up until the last 14 seconds expired, as Joe Flacco attempted his one, final Hail Mary pass. It could well have been caught. This game will be talked about for years to come!
