Vietnam Memorial Autumn Casts Its Shadows Solemnly Rededicated

by Rick Winterson

Last weekend saw a “confluence” in Medal of Honor Park at M Street and East Broadway. Now, “confluence” is simply a fancy word for a coming together, and a coming together it most certainly was – in memory of the 25 South Boston military men who gave their lives in Vietnam. The spectacular display called ”The Traveling Wall” is a one-third sized scale model of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., which was designed by architect Maya Lin. This Memorial in the nation’s capital generated much controversy, as did the Vietnam War itself, but it is now among America’s favorite pieces of architecture. Last Thursday, “The Trav-

eling Wall” arrived in South Boston. It was erected in Medal of Honor Park (still called “M Street Park” by many Southie residents); it opened to the public that afternoon. Red carnations and votive candles were lovingly placed along “The Wall”, under the 25 names of the South Boston war dead, who are memorialized on our own Vietnam Memorial – the first in the nation. The Annual Meeting of the Medal of Honor Society was also held in Boston last week. Many of these heroic guests of our City made a minipilgrimage to “The Wall” in South Boston. Some of them came back here on Sunday for the Rededication of our own Vietnam Memorial to the 25 continued on page 8

The sun rises over East Broadway on the first morning of Fall, after a summer that was all too short. The 2015 Autumnal Equinox took place at 4:21 a.m., Wednesday morning, September 23. After clearing a fog bank, that day’s brilliant sun cast a number of those dark fall shadows pointing west along Broadway. The temperature was cool – pleasantly so, not cold at all. But who knows? The Old Farmer’s Almanac for one predicts a long, hard winter.
