Recovery Month Observances This is the tenth article in South Boston Online’s series of articles on the drug crisis in South Boston, the City of Boston, and Massachusetts.

September is National Recovery Month.

The celebrations and observances here in South Boston emphasize that help is available to anyone who has a drug problem.

It’s worth repeating: Help is always available – it’s only a phone call away.

September is National Recovery Month in the U.S. In our last two drug articles (#8, September 03, “Drug Dealing in Boston”; #9, September 10, “Synthetic Marijuana Comes to Town”), South Boston Online focused on the darker aspects of the drug crisis in Boston – drug

dealers, law enforcement, and synthetic marijuana. We hope you read these articles carefully, because the local drug scene is bad. Very bad.

But there’s always Recovery.

Recovery is available to anyone who wants it – it’s literally just a phone call away. South Boston Online will say it once again: September is Recovery Month.

There are many celebrations and observances. The public is always welcome; please join us.

Tomorrow evening (Friday, September 18, at 6:30 p.m.), there’s a celebration of Recovery in the IBEW Hall at 250 Freeport Street in Dorchester.

It’s free, and it’s a great way to begin observing National Recovery Day. The South Boston Collaborative Center (usually called “the Collaborative”) has scheduled a “Hope & Recovery” Walk on Sunday evening, September 27. This is the fifth year the Walk has been held; it begins promptly at 6 p.m. in front of the Devine Recovery Center (70 Devine Way).

at Farragut Road, the Collaborative will hold an Overdose Vigil. You’ll hear stories of loss, followed by stories of Hope, and then Recovery. The point is that Recovery works. Join us on the 27th from 6 p.m. until 7:30 for an inspiring Vigil, as well as a beautiful fall sunset walk.

And not to worry. The Pats’ home game against the Jags at Gillette on the 27th will be long since over by the time the Hope & Recovery Walk begins at 6 p.m.

South Boston Online will be writing several future articles about substance abuse prevention and recovery services in

South Boston between now and year-end. We’ve mentioned the Collaborative and the Gavin Foundation, which by itself offers a dozen programs. The South Boston Health Center, Answer House, the Action Center, and Youth Ambassadors also deal with substance abuse issues. All over South Boston, there are Recovery Meetings morning, noon, and night – seven days a week (seriously!).

So we’ll close by assuring you that help is available. If you think your friends or your family members (or you yourself?) have problems with substance abuse and addiction, just pick up the phone and call.

Parking Meeting at EXCEL

Neighborhood parking in the paved area around South Boston’s EXCEL High School has generated significant problems.

The Dorchester Heights Association (the DHA) is a civic group that represents the residential areas immediately around Dorchester Heights.

Tuesday evening, September 15, DHA President Chris Hurld convened a meeting at EXCEL to open a discussion of the on-site parking situation.

Two announcements began the

meeting: John Allison, South Boston’s City Hall liaison, stated that the gates to the High School parking areas were not to be closed at night. Also, the idea of assigning spaces by lottery and then charging a monthly fee for them has been turned down flat by City Hall – no specific reason was given for this very emphatically stated decision.

EXCEL Headmaster Stephanie Sibley spoke about the school’s problems with parking. Among them is a lack of security equipment to cover the parking areas after hours; another is the misuse of

the parking slots and resulting congestion. Sibley used herself as an example – her reserved space is frequently taken by an outsider, which means she has to call a tow truck in order to free up her assigned slot.

Topics brought up by those in attendance included some history of parking in the school yard, working with the City in the past to upgrade the condition of the High School building, opening up other public areas to residential parking, raising money for modern security equipment, drinking and drugging in Mo Man’s Land behind the High

School, and constant abuse of the EXCEL lot by non-stickered cars, out-of-town vehicles, and even cars with out-of-state license plates.

No resolution of all these issues was attempted, because of their complexity, and because some issues that were raised actually had little to do with parking. The DHA’s Chris Hurld closed the meeting after an hour, saying that the DHA would now come up with proposals for improvement. These will be presented for discussion at a second public meeting, possibly during October.

The 14th anniversary of 9-11 passed us last Friday, September 11, 2015 - the worst disaster ever inflicted upon U.S. soil by a foreign enemy. Its death toll (2,977 and counting) exceeded the attack on Pearl Harbor. All over our city, state and nation, there were remembrances.

One of the most vivid memories to us here at South Boston Online will always be the actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard United Airlines Flight 93 on 9-11. They gave their lives to prevent terrorists from crashing into the Capitol Building in Washington. The UA 93 passengers, on their own, banded together, voted to fight, and then acted on Todd Beamer’s ringing battle cry, “Let’s roll!”

The basic command to act was shouted: “Go!” That’s all it took. The three Americans and the Englishman threw themselves at the heavily armed terrorist. U.S. Airman (1c) Spencer Stone led them, sustaining severe knife wounds in the fight. All four received the Legion d’honneur, France’s highest decoration; Stone is recovering nicely.

Does that bring back memories of 9-11, along with the innate heroism of American people?

A person can remember within him- or herself. A person can also

remember by taking part in observances. This is the weekend when Medal of Honor recipients gather in Boston a third time for their 2015 annual meeting. It’s also the weekend when the Vietnam Traveling Wall, “The Wall That Heals”, will once again visit M Street/Medal of Honor Park. The Opening Ceremony is this afternoon (Thursday, September 17, at 4 p.m.). Public viewings are on Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19, from 8 a.m. till 10 p.m.

On Sunday, September 20, a Memorial Mass will be said in St. Brigid Church at 10:30 a.m. A procession then will march to the Vietnam Memorial in Medal of Honor Park, where the Memorial will be rededicated as it approaches its 34th year. It is dedicated, of course, to the 25 South Boston military men who lost their lives in the Vietnam Conflict. It’s also the first Memorial in America dedicated to that Conflict, which cost 58,307 American lives.

The public is cordially invited to all of the events listed above. These are for our heroes. Please plan to attend.

Rep. Collins: “Veterans are High on the House Agenda” Recently, Representative Nick Collins announced a legislative agenda that focuses on supporting veterans and their families locally and throughout the Commonwealth.

“The South Boston community and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts have always been strong supporters of our veterans,” said Rep. Collins. “As we prepare to honor and thank our veterans and Medal of Honor recipients at this weekend’s rededication of the Vietnam War Memorial in South Boston, we must never forget that it is incumbent on us to ensure that our military personnel have the support they need when they return home from war.”

Rep. Collins is a cosponsor of House Bill 3140, An Act relative to housing for veterans, which would help veterans with living expenses by deducting costs for medical care from their income and rent calcu-

lations. The bill is scheduled for a public hearing at the end of the month before the Joint Committee on Veteran and Federal Affairs.

Earlier this session, Rep. Collins filed a bill which would authorize the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to issue distinctive license plates whose sales would fund programs for veterans and the families of fallen soldiers, including educational assistance and employment opportunities. The bill will be scheduled for a public hearing before the Joint Committee on Transportation.

During the budget debates for FY16, Rep. Collins also supported a measure filed by Senator Linda Dorcena Forry which allocated $150,000 to establish a memorial to honor members of the Massachusetts Armed Forces who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The memorial would be a first of its kind trib-

ute to all Massachusetts military personnel who have died in service to our country since September 11, 2001.

Equally important, Rep. Collins joined his colleagues in the legislature in allocating $4.35 million in this year’s budget to help provide counseling services for veterans returning from war.

“Honoring and supporting our

veterans is a priority of the House and these measures will help make the transition easier for our soldiers returning from the battlefield,” Rep. Collins said. “We must make resources available to assist in this process, as well as show our servicemen and women that we are thankful and that the Commonwealth is here for them when they need us.”

This is an unusual article for South Boston Online – for two reasons: First, it’s about topics that aren’t specifically located in South Boston; second, it compares the Patriots to Queen Elizabeth. Now, how unusual is that?

Coach Bill Belichick is normally a man of few words. But his favorite saying as a successful coach seems to be, “Just Do Your Job.” That was evident in the Thursday night game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 2015 opener. The Pats won by seven, which was the predicted spread.

The 5K Bay run/ walk begins at 9:00 am from DCR’s Day Boulevard Pavilion at 165 Day Boulevard and heads out toward Castle Island, before looping back to start/finish.

The event also includes an awards ceremony (scheduled for 10:30 a.m.) where $250 in cash prizes will be awarded to the top overall male and female runners and $50 prizes will be given to top male and female runner in each age group. Free goodie bags, free refreshments and fun activities rounds out the family-friendly events.

in support of various education, youth and the arts programs in the Boston communities that the Bank serves. “Last year’s road race drew approximately 500 participants and raised $70,000 for education. We hope to achieve the same level of success this year, but most of all we are looking forward to a day of fun with hundreds of community members,” said Ed Merritt, Executive Vice President of East Boston Savings Bank.

Meet Two Best Buds Youngsters attend the Timilty School and love going to the “New” Club

They’re both in the seventh grade and attend the James P. Timilty Middle School in Roxbury. They play various sports in and out of school and keep busy. They’ve done well in the classroom and are focusing on doing even better this school year. They enjoy each other’s company and you can tell by their mutual smiles that they’re two best buds. Our two youngsters featured in SBOL this week are Andrea Sierra and Kevin Soto.

Andrea Sierra, 12, is the daughter of Luz and Yanco. She has three sisters, Johanna, Jennifer, and Jocelyn, and one older brother named Aneudi. She also has a pet Chihuahua named Cocoa and a cat named Poppet. Andrea loves going to her social studies class and someday hopes to

be a hoop star in the WNBA. Her favorite color is green, she loves eating tacos, and her favorite entertainer is Beyonce Knowles, the famous American singer, songwriter and actress.

In her leisure time at home, Andrea does her homework, hangs out with friends, and helps her mother cook and clean the house. In the world of sports, she’s

an avid softball and basketball player. She plays softball in the Roberto Clemente Softball League in the South End. She’s catches and likes tagging opponents out.

She’s been playing hoop for four years.

She’s on the school team and plays at the Club. Her sister Johanna was on the Club team. Andrea watched her play. She gave Andrea some valuable tips and now Andrea loves playing herself.

Kevin Soto, 13, is the son of Deibis and Barbara. He has two brothers, Deivi and Denyel. And a Chihuahua named Rubio. He loves going to math class and someday hopes to be a star in the NFL. His favorite color is blue, he loves eating at Burger King, and his favorite pro is NBA superstar, Stephen Curry, of the Golden State Warriors, the reigning NBA champions.

In his spare time, Kevin enjoys playing Call of Duty and Madden 2K on Play-

Station 4. In sports, he’s played in the Roberto Clemento Baseball League since he was seven years old. He pitches and sometimes is behind the plate. He enjoys hitting home runs. He also plays hoop at the Club and in the BNBL during the summer. And lastly, he loves playing football and tackling opponents.

After school, both youngsters spend their afternoons at the South Boston Boys and Girls Club. They have both been members for at least five years. The Club opened its doors for the school season on Monday September 14. The “new look” Club is impressive. Bright and friendly colors in the rooms and corridors give the Club an inviting feeling. The rooms and pool area have been reconfigured and the open space look is putting smiles on the faces of Club members.

And the staff is taking care of the members.

“The Club’s very organized,” Kevin said.

“I like the grip of new gym floor (just refinished) and the pool (area) is now different.

“I like the staff,” he added. They’re very helpful….personable…they’re cool… actually awesome.”

Andrea concurs with Kevin’s assessment of the Club staff.

“They are helpful,” she said. “When I’m in a bad mood or mad at someone I can talk to them and they listen. They care.

They help me feel better after I talk with them.”

Religious Education News Saint Brigid and Gate of Heaven Parishes Kindergarten – Sixth Grade Welcome!

Whiffs of Wingate NFL reportedly poised to blast Patriots into outer space.

The Spygate, Deflategate, and the most recent Headsetgate investigations will pale in comparison to the next round of scrutiny the New England Patriots may face. The central premise by the NFL is that after decades of losing, the New England Patriots organization was reportedly determined to turn the franchise around; to win by any means necessary. Desperate, the organization reportedly looked outside the box for a solution to its woes.

Sometime last year, the NFL reportedly hired investigators to dig deep for the truth and to derail the Patriots once and for all. The NFL is reportedly hell bent on revealing why and how the Patriots win so much. Allegations reportedly started pouring which would prove the Patriots’ chicanery.

Investigative reporter, Robert “BobbyLove” Murphy, who leaked this story to SBOL from a leak leaked by an unknown NFL front-office source, has labeled this latest chapter as “Wingate.”

However, Bobby Love doesn’t love the fact that the NFL is going out of its way,

again, to discredit this beloved franchise.

He said that it was as simple as, “They hate us because they ain’t us.”

The unknown NFL source alleges that certain individuals provided detailed information which should finally satisfy the NFL, and their frustrated fan base, that the Patriots ‘win’ only because many of the players are literally out-ofthis world and some also not entirely human.

The report allegedly includes the following: 1) Key players from the last four Super Bowl championship teams weren’t human, but allegedly from the planet Lucror, which in Latin means win. These ‘other-worldly’ players reportedly include, but are not limited to: Willie McGinest, Adam Vinitieri, Kevin Faulk, Steve Grogan, Troy Brown, Vince Wilfork, Tedy Bruschi, Logan Mankins, Dan Koppen, Wes Welker, Drew Bledsoe, Mike Vrabel, Rob Gronkowski, Julien Edelman, and Ty Law. 2) Tom Brady is human but reportedly equipped with first generation “Kraft” cloning chips. 3) Bill Belichick is human but also reportedly equipped with second generation “Kraft” cloning chips, which allegedly coincided with the Brady experiment.

SB Community Health Center’s Youth Ambassadors Meetings Begin!

The South Boston Community Health Center’s Youth Ambassadors Program is pleased to announce that Youth Ambassadors meetings for the fall semester will begin on Tuesday September 22, 2015. !

Interested youth ages 12 – 15 are encouraged to attend the meetings to learn more about participating in community service projects, health related trainings and art based activities that engage youth in the life of the South Boston community. Current Youth Ambassadors already enrolled in the program will be welcomed back to begin another fun, productive year.

Applications to become a Youth Ambassador are being accepted for two weeks, at the September 22 and 29th meetings.

The meetings begin at 5:30 p.m.

and end at 7:00 p.m.

The location of the meeting is the South Boston Community Health Center, 409 West Broadway 3rd Floor – Community Room.

The Youth Ambassador meetings will be held every Tuesday September 22 – June 7, 2016. This year Youth Ambassadors will be involved in a wide variety of activities and trainings including substance abuse prevention, teen health and community service projects, all designed to promote a healthier and more fulfilling life.
